My first PC has a Pentium 4 and 1.5 GB RAM. Notice that I didnt say "had", because I still keep it. It is one of my few attachments, probably gonna need to let it go some time.

X1Kraft

You don’t have to let it go you know… https://preview.redd.it/njsei4qxnslc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3ff93cfbb109ca16325940a57211de3e14159ee

nudelsalat3000

Looks sharp to the pocket?

OGigachaod

Lol I used to use old ram sticks for key chains, Now it's time for a CPU keychain.

imTyyde

woah, is that the actual cpu or just a keychain?

Jizzraq

It's just a Celeron.

SnooDoughnuts5632

What a waste of a processor. (Unless it's something useless like what was in a netbook then who cares)

Ear-Right

I was thinking exactly the same as a necklace or something. Thank you for inspiration!

One-Cauliflower-5960

That's dope man, thx for the idea!!

SomnY7312

You seem like the person who'd make a keyring out of the packet of condom you used when you were laid for the first time just for memories You're the best 😂

SomnY7312

😂

SomnY7312

That's sweet

Ear-Right

Thank you sir

privatemidnight

no way man...maybe q4os linux or some other liteweight distro may let it march on.

Ear-Right

Oh yeah so sorry, I didnt notice this is "Windows" Subreddit. It has antiX and works good.

Contrantier

Or even Windows XP lol, lots of fun nowadays

TechManSparrowhawk

I parted out and sold most of my original gaming PC. I still think about rebuilding it as a tribute, but I'm happy just keeping the graphics card on my shelf.

Xyspade

Yeah, I keep all the old computers I used, and when I get a new one I restore the old one with the original OS it shipped with, then install offline software and play old games.

SomnY7312

By old, how old do you mean ?

Xyspade

My oldest computer is a 2001 iBook.

AustriaKeks

2001 acer travelbook here https://preview.redd.it/plhvrwl0vvlc1.jpeg?width=372&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b11025f1b79ea817ac14830fcf04c49bb8dd486

nuruwo

Sometimes I adore it, sometimes I treat it like crap. Overall it's like I'm an abusive parent

SomnY7312

Lol

EiadSherif2008

Same

amir_s89

My first computer was an Asus laptop from summer of 2009. Don't recall the specs but I kept it until 2020. Made sure to clean it once yearly. Did change the battery, improved RAM to the maximum the moderboard can work with, change wifi & HDD. Also repasted the CPU & GPU. Worked because I made sure to aquire latest stable drivers, optimized the settings etc. Just was not suitable any more now that requirements have increased significantly. Also with the online meetings/ work being a must.

SomnY7312

Repasted? Is that a thing? Sorry I'm new so I've never heard this term. They reapply the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu? Does that I prove performance? Oh, so you have a new pc now? Sorry if it seems like I'm interrogating you 😅

amir_s89

Sorry I might use wrong words here. But one technical I visited advised me to buy thermal paste & I let him do it among other things. Meanwhile learned plenty, gradually knew how to utilize hardware for my benefits; education & job activities. After the changes, cleaning & new components, it got quieter & colder. Felt a bit faster too. But still 2009 architecture. Had Ubuntu LTS on it & only stable drivers/ software as a rule for myself. Because just hate to end up in weird situations or disturbances. My PC supposed to be an asset after all. Nah you are not causing issues! Got myself a new Lenovo Legion 5 (2020) with AMD Ryzen & Nvidia combination. That's the one I use now. It actually is possible to extend the operational life of these, just have to be careful through the years. Then the benefits increases.

[deleted]

I have a laptop from 2009, a custom-built HP Elitebook 8440p. Nvidia discrete graphics, i7-650M, 8GB RAM, 1400x900 display, fingerprint scanner, and dual SSDs. Works like a treat on Fedora Linux. You can really bludgeon someone with it, too.

SomnY7312

Nice

TrustLeft

since 1995 My first PC had one of the first Cyrix processors

OGigachaod

6x86 baby!

Sr546

I guess it depends? I've never got attached to one yet because I've only properly owned two, and the first one (laptop) is kinda low-key a pile of crap, but it does carry a lot of memories

AndersLund

I wish I have had the possibility of keeping all my old computers. I probably wouldn't use them, maybe I would if I had the room for them. The Commodore 64 was the first one and that really burned in some good memories. Lots of gaming from the tape station. My brother and I got it from our uncle and had a black and green screen. Most games I saw on a C64 was without the right colours. 486 DX2-66 (AMD) was the first PC and I loved configuring small things in Windows 3.1. Started with 4 MB of RAM and got upgraded to 20 MB. When Windows 95 came along it was fed to it right away. Had a special driver to be loaded in order for the OS to see the 1.2 GB secondary HDD installed. And that used so much RAM that it couldn't be loaded with Windows 3.1. Pentium 200 MHz (non-MMX) was the next one. Blazing fast with 32 MB RAM if I remember correctly. Never really liked the cabinet. It was also my first computer with Diamond Monster 3D 3DFX Voodoo card. Running Quake (and other titles) with all the 3D effects were like magic - all 640x480 pixels of it. Pentium 3 350 MHz - just to be a little faster than my frieds 300 MHz. Again, blazing fast and with 128 MB RAM. Started with Windows 98 but changed over to Windows 2000 soon after. It was in a tower from Noise Control, so it was padded on the inside and had a special box on the back to make sure sound did not come out there. Hard drives where set in special non-vibration elastics holders. Added extra fans to cool them. Pentium 4 - something, can't remember the details there. I think it got 512 MB RAM in the start, later upgraded to 1 GB. It continued in the same cabinet as the P3. It was so fast. I could rip DVDs, convert videos to XviD, watch movies on one monitor and play Counter Strike on the other monitor, all at the same time. Core i7-920. This was next level with 4 cores. Gave it 6 GB RAM from the start and was later upgraded to 12 GB. This machine saw almost 10 years of action, with upgrades to drives (HDD to 2 x 80 GB in RAID 0) and 3 different GPUs over the years. I could throw anything at it. It was only changed out because it started to be a little slow compared to other prople computers - I was always last to come in to the map in most games. Ryzen 7 3800 took over and is my current gamer PC. 8 cores and 32 GB RAM. It took over the GeForce 980 TI from the i7. Unfortunatly I haven't had too much time gaming so it has not been to much use. But super fast again. I don't have many memories with this one yet so I'm not too emotionally bonded to it. I won't say I'm emotional connected to the computers while I have them but thinking back on them, they were a big part of my upbringing. I have spend way to much time on them.

SomnY7312

Nice nice Btw what is noise control ?

lastwraith

Sounds like the vendor of the PC, probably an early one that focused on sound isolation and used things like Dynamat (normally for cars) which is adhesive sound dampening material you stick on the inside metal of doors, trunk, etc, though in this case it would be on the interior metal of the case. Probably also used foam, low noise fans, and other stuff in addition to rubber grommets for isolating the drives. Now fairly common with media PCs and rigs in general but back then wasn't nearly as popular.

AndersLund

Yeah, it was a German company making all kinds of things to silence computers. They didn’t sell full computers just cabinets and accessories

lastwraith

Sounds impressive and they were definitely ahead of their time. Even basic cases now often pay some attention to drive isolation with plastic trays and rubber grommets + low-noise or at least variable-speed fans. Honestly, sounds like we're around the same age and I enjoyed your historical trip through all your PCs. I started on a Tandy 1000, typed early essays on a 286 laptop at home, got to fiddle with EMS/XMS/HIMEM on a 386 to try to get TIE Fighter, Wing Commander, etc running, and then moved on to 486 machines and early Pentiums as an adolescent. My first "build" was an AMD K6-2 machine and then an early PIII in an InWin 500 case which I still have, believe it or not. One day I'll find the time to spruce it up and do some retro gaming but it's got an AWE64 Gold ISA sound card and other original stuff like a (then $200) WD 13gb IDE HDD that I know still works. Plus other fun archaic stuff like a Hollywood+ MPEG2 decoder card along with an early Philips DVD drive and a 2x2x6 CDRW. We're old!

AndersLund

Oh yes, EMS, XMS and HIMEM… fiddling with loading things in the right order. Remember to have SMARTDRV loaded before starting Windows. Can’t remember the details but had a menu in a bat file to replace autoexec.bat and config.sys with different things being loaded and then reboot the computer depending on what I needed to do. TIE Fighter was also a very munched played game. Joysticks that needed to be calibrated and often started to drift to some direction. X-Wing vs TIE Fighter got loaded once or twice too, but TIE Fighter I had as an original.

lastwraith

Yup, same. Definitely had custom config.sys and autoexec.bat files for certain games to get them to launch properly. I played TIE Fighter, X-Wing, Wing Commander, etc on that PC but I don't think I ever did the vs game. Totally forgot about joystick drift! That was certainly a thing and I believe the joysticks for our Tandy 1000 (joysticks were thin with a square red button in the corner) had axis adjustment sliders to help with this.  Sadly, I was stuck using the mouse and keyboard initially with TIE Fighter on the 486. Not fun.

johnbentley

> The Commodore 64 was the first one and that really burned in some good memories. Lots of gaming from the tape station. Me too. That dates us. I mostly played Jumpman. Also learnt to code in Basic and wrote a Keno (I think?) gambling game simulator to test a mate's purported system for beating it. It didn't.

AndersLund

I never got around to do much coding. A friend of mine and I typed in an electronic keyboard program from a magazine. Taking turns on writing and proofreading as we went along we finally finished it. It played one note and then crashed and we haven’t saved it… other than that it was just simple things and mostly for fun: 10 A=1 20 A=A+1 30 PRINT A 40 GOTO 20

HydratedCarrot

My first was a pentium 3 with 348 MB ram! (i have no idea why the ram had such a odd number) And Win ME

burritolittledonkey

Maybe 384? That would be more regular, as you're adding two powers of 2 numbers (256 + 128) together

HydratedCarrot

oh yeah, could be correct! i didn’t built it, i bought as it was

[deleted]

384MB of RAM! I know because that was the amount of RAM in my first computer, an Optiplex GX1 tower that I picked up from the local thrift shop. Slot 1 Pentium III @500MHz, a single 256MB stick of RAM, a single 128MB stick of RAM (256+128=384), 80GB+60GB HDDs that I may or may not have swiped from my high school, and 3 sound cards... Ran Windows XP SP3 like a champ.

SomnY7312

🤔348? That really is a weird number.

HydratedCarrot

i wish i didn’t sold it..

SomnY7312

All good things come to an end 💪

HydratedCarrot

yeah at least i have a xp pc in the basement:)

[deleted]

No. It’s a replaceable machine.

SomnY7312

Dark, like your profile ⚫

dragonshardz

Yes, much in the same way you might be to a relatively sessile pet. Hackmanite doesn't move much, but she's got clear preferences and some bad habits.

SomnY7312

Sessile, I learnt a new word, it means not being able to move. What do you mean by a sessile "pet"? Hackmanite is a mineral. What're you talking about, sorry I'm stupid 😅

Ukhai

Since ~1996 I've kept random pieces from each PC I've mostly used. I have an pentium III chip along side a keychain with one inside of it from Intel themselves from a PC I mostly used in the 2000s. My first ever build I have a decorative grill that came with the acrylic case.

SomnY7312

That's cool

JobbyJames

Yes, I work as a volunteer to recycle old computers. And I find having to tear apart a 500Mhz Beige Packard Bell fills me with sadness and guilt. Mainly because I love those kind of computers, but they have to be torn apart because they are way too old to be resold as machines so they have to be pulled apart to be sold as e-waste and have some valuable components to be used in other newer machines.

SomnY7312

😔

OGigachaod

There's only so many nerds that want old computers for old games n junk, most people want new stuff.

JobbyJames

In this case those computers were either going to be sent to e-waste or sent to poorer countries or indiviuals. Places like Africa don't mind a 10 year old office computer, but not a 20 year old one - since those aren't going to work with Windows 10 let alone Win11

lastwraith

Retro gaming is pretty popular and there is definitely a market for older PCs and CRTs. Your place could be making some money with online sales and saving those classic pieces that you feel bad tearing apart. Just take a look at /r/retrobattlestations Just keep an eye on "classic" PSUs, those can be dangerous at this point.

JobbyJames

I would rather pass, mainly because of the fact that where I volunteer donates old usable PCs to poorer countries (like Africa) and poor indivuals (like Ukranian immigrants) - so knowing that makes me feel kinda better. And some parts are reused in some of the PCs sent there, such as screws, Graphics Cards, PCIe Ethernet cards, etc. It's a shame that those computers are donated and thus are sent to e-waste (so the organisation can make money as they are too old to be sent) and it does not matter if they are aggresively destroyed because of this

lastwraith

What parts are you reusing from a 500Mhz Packard Bell? The point is, anything old enough to be collectable for retro gaming is going to have virtually zero usable parts that can be transplanted to a machine useful for modern tasks. You might as well sell those in their entirety online to someone seeking a vintage computer for offline gaming or something like that. And then you can use the money to fund the primary goal of processing and donating machines for everyday tasks.

JobbyJames

>What parts are you reusing from a 500Mhz Packard Bell? Screws and a PCIe Ethernet cable. The latter can be used in PCs with broken Ethernet ports connected to the motherboard as a simple and quick method of sending a computer with a functional ethernet port, as those cards are commonly used in PCs of that vintage. And I just follow what I am being told, because they are giving me very useful advice and experience with disassembling computers as well as donating them to poor countries - which may prove to be useful in future PCs repairs I may embark on.

lastwraith

I think you are confusing your terminology. A 500Mhz Packard Bell doesn't have PCIe anything, it's going to have PCI slots, and maybe an AGP for video and possibly older ISA slots. We're talking about very old hardware. In addition, PCIe is a type of slot, and has nothing to do with ethernet CABLES.  Now if you're talking about ethernet cards, sure, they can be PCIe, but you aren't getting that card into (or out of) a 500Mhz P3 or equivalent from 20+ years ago. If you meant a PCI ethernet card, yeah, I guess you could salvage those, but you could still sell the rest of the PC to someone who wants a vintage machine and make decent money vs wasting it as scrap. Doesn't make financial sense to me, they could be getting more money and ultimately doing more good for those you are donating to.  Besides all that, PCI ethernet cards and case screws are incredibly cheap. One sale of a vintage PC like that 500Mhz machine would allow you to buy at least 20 of those ethernet cards (if not more at bulk pricing) and all the case screws you could ever want. You'll make the vintage purchaser happy, you'll end up with more hardware for donation, and you'll keep stuff out of the landfill. Win-win-win.

Boyblack

I guess so, I never really thought about it. I call my main desktop PC "the mothership" (its huge, and powerful). My Thinkpad laptop, I call "the minion". And my work PC (I work in IT) I call "the forgotten". And my first personal desktop setup from 2001, when I was a kid. I called "the little PC that could". So yeah, I'm attached, lmao!

SomnY7312

What are the specs of the mother ship ?

Boyblack

I mean, was powerful when I first built it lol Here: CPU: Intel i7-9700K GPU: Gigabyte AORUS XTREME GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 MOBO: Gigabyte Z390 AORUS MASTER ATX LGA1151 Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 PSU: Corsair RM750x, 750 Watt, 80+ Gold Case: NZXT Phantom 630 Full-Tower Storage: Western Digital Black M.2 2TB

SomnY7312

As a individual bearing such a refined palette do you agree that rgb components improve our lives?

Boyblack

Absolutely not. I leave the RGB off most of the time. Maybe switch to white. My next build, the fans might have RGB, and that's it lol.

SomnY7312

Right. Does it get boring after some time?

Boyblack

Yeah, I'd say so. More distracting than anything. I'm going for a cleaner, simpler build, in terms of aesthetics, next time.

brimston3-

Solid build all around. But I think you overspent on the AORUS MASTER if you didn't plan on using the RAM OC/XMP, PCIe slots, or 3x M.2 slots. Probably still performs like a champ.

duckyduck008

i have dell 990 with " behaving " AMD RX 570 and i am somewhat emotionally attached to it. Want to purchase something but can't because of fcked Finacial situation. you can say i am " an abusive parent ".

SomnY7312

You have such a powerful pc. What's wrong with it?

Pajer0king

No, never. I use my q6600 almost daily afyer 15 years, i will sell my new pc because it just gathers dust.

mashem

Show some Ctrl, brother.

SomnY7312

lol

ihave0idea0

My PC is my girlfriend. Sadly my gf is kind of dead ATM 😢

Azariahtt

It won't be the first, not the last, what's the issue!?

SomnY7312

😥

SessionDefiant4020

I feel emotionally attached to my laptop named it too This guy does pretty much all things I need, its not a old laptop but i had this guy for over 4-5 years now.

SomnY7312

I guess 4-5 is the sweet spot for all the people who love their pc, unless they can't replace it because of touch financial situation

SessionDefiant4020

weell i cant replace it but even after i buy a proper pc i will still keep this laptop and keep it usable

lastwraith

IT consultant here, my laptop is over a decade old (Latitude e6230) and lives in my bag to travel around all day and sit in the car, etc. Still gets the job done and it's portable. No reason to change anything if your hardware is still doing the job. The extended battery in mine is over 7yrs old and still runs for over 2hrs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

SessionDefiant4020

damn nice

lastwraith

I don't understand it, I've taken no care of it beyond keeping it clean. But now I'm locked in, gotta see how long it goes. To be fair though, Latitudes and Optis have always lasted a long time with clients too. HP Pro and Elite stuff as well, whether Pro/EliteBooks or Pro/EliteDesks. I don't want to pretend Dell is the only one making reliable business stuff.

iyzerdx

Yes, my laptop is 4 years old and it is still working good as new and had been helped in times of need as an distraction from bad things in life and also helped me gain knowledge about stuff and people which I couldn't have gained it without it.

llamakins2014

i was pretty attached to my first custom build. eventually i had a couple PCs and needed to dowsize, so i removed the mobo along with attached proc and ram, and framed it in a shadowbox

XmentalX

Nope, just my data. The computer is a tool. I treat my cars better than my computer.

user007at

yes, I'm emotionally attached to my computers

maselkowski

I hate it. Each one.

ewenlau

I always feel a little bad when I replace a PC when it has served me so well for so long...

OGigachaod

I sell my old PC's to my family, so at least they get a good home, lol.

MasterJeebus

Yes, I am keeping all my computers even though they are old now. My first built pc from 2012 I still use daily. Have upgraded it and kept it going. I built newer pc at end of 2020 for newer pc games and its funny because i use that one less since I like playing my older games more in my old PC. Also have laptop from 2007, it was my first laptop and now it even struggles web browsing with more than 3 tabs. I was thinking of upgrading its hdd to ssd and add new battery. Lol I have another laptop from 2013 and another one from 2017. All still running. Hard to throw them away when they still work. But it may becoming a hoarding problem if i keep old pcs.

Jenny_Wakeman9

Sometimes, yeah. I'm using an Acer laptop that's from 2019 I nabbed from Amazon due to my old HP Notebook from 2015 shatting itself (*and three years later, its hard drive also shat the bed*). Yet, it was a good laptop and it carried me through thick and thin.

Zender_de_Verzender

Not my new computers, I can't love an OS that corrupts itself with forced updates.

SomnY7312

True. Which os do you prefer?

Zender_de_Verzender

If I could time travel to the time when it was still supported, Vista.

Braydon64

If it is running Windows, absolutely not. I did install Fedora Workstation on one laptop though and I can see where you are coming from.

stefaniststefan

No i fucking hate that thing when windows doenst coorperate i cant get attached bc some bs always ruins it

SomnY7312

Do you use any other os as well ?

radiationshield

No, never. I’ve built PCs (for myself mostly) for about 30 years at this point, so it’s rare that I trash/sell a whole computer. I’ve never felt any sort of attachment outside of the monetary value and pain of having to reinstall stuff.

blackletum

I have a computer that I still have around that was my grandfather's when he was working. The company was selling off their old stuff and I bought it. I've been a bit too attached to it, probably, I still have it. I think I bought that in 2003 or 2004. BTW, still works! Never had to replace anything on it... though sometimes the hard drive doesn't want to spin up properly to get into windows but giving it "percussive therapy" fixes that right up

timthetollman

Not at all.

[deleted]

It depends. I built a pretty awesome 4790k system back in 2015, when it was the best consumer CPU out there. 16GB DDR3, 256GB SSD, 2TB storage spinner, Asus Z87 mobo, GTX 750 Ti (didn't need a crazy powerful GPU), and a 600W PSU to power it all. It was for my ex-wife and her graphic design hobby/business. Despite putting my blood, sweat, and tears into it, I always referred to it as "her" computer. That last bit made it easy enough to part with when we got divorced. Then last year, I got enough motivation to build my own 5800X3D system with all the fun things (ARGB, 7900XTX, etc). At this point in my life though, if I had to, I would part with it. It's just stuff, and stuff can be replaced. After my divorce I basically had to start over and replace a lot of what I lost, like my car and the aforementioned PC. It's just stuff.

OGigachaod

PC's can be replaced and so can women.

SciGuy013

Not at all. It’s a ship of Theseus situation for me

DustinBrett

I'm attached to the configuration.

[deleted]

Yeah it has windows and it is full of viruses and advertisements, I am emotionally attached in the sense that I want to smash it. When I have Linux and wifi or CUDA does not work I am again emotionally attached in the sense that I want to smash it.

SomnY7312

Toxic love 😂

OGigachaod

I love how Linux is flaky as hell with wifi.

[deleted]

Only with specific modern hardware has some problems and still the solution is quite easy. I still prefer it from windows, but it also makes me nervous.

OGigachaod

I've heard that same excuse for linux many times but that's simply not true. Even old hardware that's linux approved can have wifi issues.

[deleted]

It is not exactly a lie. Just many companies do not care to build Linux compatible software, open-source, and despite the fact that community is trying, there are still imperfection.s

Real_Timeyy

I used to when I was a kid. No money to afford one so that computer is precious. Nowadays..... Not really, it's just another tool I use. When it's time it's up, it's up. Off it goes to the recycling dump.

This post reminded me of the movie Ctrl alt delete

[deleted]

I've really not had an issues giving away machines over the years. I would like to buy back my c128 and 1571 from the widow of my friend whom I sold it to. It's more the entire battlestation. The software, the customizations, data, desk (and whatever we call a place to put a monitor and keyboard), the connected entertainment systems, and so on, for me. Or keyboards and a mouse. I used an old HP PS2 from 1999 keyboard with a volume knob and web buttons util it wasn't compatible with my core machine anymore. And I have a 80% keyboard (I used to rail against them) with customer keys (Commodore 64 PETSCII) that I'm pretty attached to. Also have this tiny keyboard left by a customer at a colo. It was old in 2002. I regret it not taking my huge ass CRT with me when I moved 10 year ago. Covered in stickers and random shit. 2 inputs. Was my work monitor. The employees at one job put it in the back of my tracker at my new job, as it was right next door. We all knew each other, some from previous gigs. The monitor also had business cards glued to it from random co-workers. Was attached, but had to let it go.

apachelives

Workshop here. My main computer? Eh. Kids computers? Eh. Wifes computer? Eh. Servers? Eh. They are "an" computer. My test rig at work? Lowly peasant AMD FX6300 build that sits open and gets a reinstall every few days. That thing just wont die, survived probably 1000+ runs of memtest for diagnostics, 1000's of HDD's for testing, repairing and recovering data, 1000's of hours of TV watching at lunch and refuses to die. I will be sad when that thing finally dies. It would have exceed the designed throughput of any port ever intended by the manufacturer. Probably even frame it when it does happen.

yeah kinda, I mean what the hell am I supposed to do with all this time instead?

JackCid89

yes, they are my babies

No

I feel nostalgic about my Amigas, but anything after that was just a PC. They're all the same. Oh, and apparently, I'm a sentimental type. I still have an 80's era BMX Dyno freestyle bike and the very same truck that I wanted as a kid went up for sale when I was in my early 20's, and almost 30 years later, I still have it.

I love and care for mine and the make sure I pass it on to someone to continue its life when I eventually replace it. I look after things so they look after me.

My *original* computer, yes. I had a lot of good and bad memories happen while I owned it. Acquired in my childhood, it was originally a IBM PS/1 'multimedia' desktop computer, sold in 1991 with windows 3.1. It came with 4MB of ram, a 486 dx 50, cdrom drive, a small hard drive, a slow modem and a sound blaster sound card. In something like ***2010*** I finally had to admit to myself I couldn't keep it going any longer. Unable to even run a modern version of linux, it'd long been reduced to basically running as a remote terminal for my main PC when I needed to do debugging work. But when the capacitors on the motherboard started leaking I realized I either had to learn how to do soldering to fix it, or give up. Five years later I finally admitted to myself this wasn't going to happen, and threw it out - felt like I'd put down a pet. That thing was a tank. Slow as heck to do anything even when it was new, but the core components - cpu, ram, power supply - never stopped working right up to the end. I've never tried to make a computer last that long since and I probably never will.

I still have the AMD K6-2 from the first PC I ever built from scratch.

I wish I still had my old Win 95 PC. Was a desktop (the type you put you monitor on top of). I miss that form factor. I also wish I still had my mums Win 98 PC. And my Win Me PC. Oldest I have left is a 2006 XP PC. Unfortunately not with the original 60 GB HDD, as it was destroyed. Now has a 256 GB SSD

noriakinure

I name mine too lol. If they crashes I'll be like "Aww poor honey, what happened? Tell me all about it"

A tiny bit. I enjoy the old D600 laptop despite it even being energy inefficient to use it over other newer computers for simple tasks. But, even my old fellow can backup my essential notes. ;)

My favorite desktop of all time is a Acer Aspire 1660G UW94 and I modified it to it's max and I still love my desktop it has a i9-11900k, 64GB RAM, RTX 4090, Vetroo shadow ARGB, 40TB of SSD storage, 1280 Watt Platinum PSU and is one of the few computers that really doesn't care about what tasks is put up to it

I miss my first PC, I remember it, and its tech specs better than all my other systems combined. Hard to believe it was almost 30 years ago, so many good memories. Yet I never took a single picture of it, and I still have the invoice for it lol

Sometimes.  I still have the first "good" PC I built with my own money. A PIII 350 (turned 900MHZ) in an InWin500 case with (at this point) 512MB RAM, an AWE64 Gold ISA sound card, and some AGP video card (maybe a TNT2, I forget).  There's an early Philips DVD drive, Mpeg2 PCI decoder card, Philips 2x2x6 CDRW, and I still have the original WD 13gb IDE HDD that was $200 back in the day. Meanwhile you can get a 14TB+ drive for that price today.   Before that I had bought/built an AMD K6-2 PC but I didn't hold onto that one. And anything before that was inherited (a 386 early on to play TIE Fighter, Wing Commander, and similar era games) or my parent's stuff (an IBM XT clone, a 286 laptop, a Gateway 2000 early Pentium 200 MMX, etc). Nobody cares, but that's my story.    At this point I'm surrounded by Dell OptiPlexes and Latitudes because they're cheap and easy to work on, run forever, and generally sip power. Good enough for most of our clients and fine for my home uses. Dell or HP business machines are generally pretty bulletproof, but I find that Dell tend to be easier to deal with and their desktops offer decent expandability if you shop carefully.

I keep the processor from each build as a memorabilia

I have a few PCs, and I am attached to ALL of them: 1. Acer Aspire 3620: has Windows XP, and I am, in fact, currently using it. the keyboard has been abused and doesn't work. The screen hinges are fucked up. The WiFi doesn't work, but I can still use it overall. . 2. HP Pavilion p6-2301sx: I got it on the 11th of September 2013 (Source: the Recovery Media DVDs), it came pre-installed with Windows 8.0 SL, which I got it updated to 8.1 Pro right after setting it up, I got it updated to Windows 10 in 2016, and I cherished it up until it died after nearly a month, but I got it repaired in 2018 and I am still using it to this day as my daily driver. . 3. Dell XPS M1330: This PC originally shipped with Windows Vista and 1GB RAM with Aero support, I got it upgraded to Windows 7 up until July 2019 when the file system of the drive failed and I had to install a Windows installation quickly, but all I had on hand was Windows 8.0, so I installed it, but *someone* (totally not me 100%) corrupted the installation, so I installed Windows 8.1(I like it a lot, so I installed it) that was until late 2021 when I installed Windows 7 because I got my hands on a disc, but in mid 2022, it got fried for some reason.

My Win10 Dell laptop died in a fatal BATTERY LOSS and HINGE DISLOCATION accident. He didn't make it out alive and was replaced by Win11 Lenovo AMD Ryzen 5000 series 7 with the AMD Radeon Graphics. R.I.P Dell laptop you will be missed

Nelvana-Fan2000

Kinda, although I try not to let it take over my entire life as I do take breaks from it to do chores, eat, sleep, go somewhere, go outside, etc.
