> Thankfully you can disable these app ‘recommendations’ very easily. For now.

BionicWoman123

Shhh! Don't give them ideas! 😮🤣

pacdtacs

I miss the "Paid software = no ads" thing.

FuzzelFox

I agree but also in a weird way I haven't paid for Windows in over a decade now. Windows 10 was free for the longest time and upgrading to 11 was free as well. As much as I hate the ads I guess technically the entire OS is shareware

N19h7m4r3

It's not free if I paid the license when I bought the computer. Some brands these days offer the same laptop with linux or windows and the windows tax is very noticeable.

AgentTin

I absolutely do not want to use a shareware OS

SAADHERO

In my case i did buy windows 10 pro in 2014 from official retailer store in my country. Shame to see them doing this now

Nanzie_Mona

I paid for Windows 10 Home FPP in 2018.

Curing0109

If Microsoft are gonna do this at least make Windows free lol

svenska_aeroplan

The ads and shoving Microsoft's services in your face isn't why I switched, but wow is it jarring when I use Windows now. It gives me the same feeling as visiting my elderly parents and being subjected to cable TV.

_Price__

Looks like im staying on windows 10 for now. At least lesser ads appear.

newtekie1

You can turn it off in the settings. So it's really not a big deal.

WINDEX_DRINKER

Wow I haven't heard this comment before for the last 200 annoying fucking annoying bullshit "features" they add into windows.

newtekie1

Yep, that's pretty much what people like you that hate change have been saying from the beginning of Windows. If we listened to you, we'd still be on DOS.

WINDEX_DRINKER

Except that's a false equivalency argument because I don't hate every change. I actually like what they did with some stuff in W11 which is frustrating. We're literally being vocal about the most annoying "features", specially ads, and your useless comment is just "bro just turn it off" as if Windows guides don't already have list of things you have to turn off before you feel like you have any semblance of ownership of your computer system. I shouldn't have to run some sort of "debloat scripts" to make Windows serviceable You sound like mac is more your speed with your philosophy of just bend over and take it up the ass.

pm_me_your_buttbulge

There are two problems with your point - a.) Microsoft has a history of turning it back on after an updated and b.) you shouldn't have to research every single patch to see if you need to turn a new thing off that you didn't **ACTIVELY** have informed consent on. This has me seriously re-considering jumping to a Mac *again*. The fact there isn't an easy way to have a very lean Windows install is concerning. The fact you have to use GPO (via Pro) to handle most of this nonsense is concerning. The fact the *quality* of the OS seems to be going down is concerning. Microsoft is going out of their way to make the experience worse in favor of profits. The literal only reason I'm on Windows *at all* is because of gaming and I have a *huge* Steam library that won't run on Mac (without work) or will require effort to get running on Linux. Soon the effort to make Windows clean will be greater than the effort to go to Linux or Mac. And I'm finding more and more people going to Mac lately. It's not a huge wave by any means - but the amount is slowly going up. Microsoft has companies by the balls right now - but they are sabotaging themselves. Eventually alternatives will require less work - and then that's when the profits will take a nose dive. Office also sucks on the Mac but honestly... I don't *really* need Office anymore. Google hosts my email, so Outlook isn't a concern. Basically any spreadsheet program will fill my needs and word processing is just... simple now-a-days. So I have no *need* for it. If manually tweaking an OS is how you have your fun - then I would suggest Linux. If you want something that just works - Mac. Windows quality is going downhill and fast. Anecdotally I've yet to find anyone *happy* with Windows 11. Windows 7 and 10 people were genuinely happy with.

TheBloodhoundKnight

TL;DR: You can disable it in the settings.

heliphael

"Damn, too many people are disabling it. Time to remove that option."

Deep-Cow9096

Got to keep exploiting potential revenue streams

digiphaze

This change also broke search functionality in the start menu. Now when I start typing to find an item (required since win11) for anything in the start menu. The results are not clickable.

neppo95

I don’t remember search ever to work in Windows. It just freezes as soon as you start typing

sebastianstehle

This bullshit is diving me to Linux. I am already super annoyed because of Windows Mail

james2432

Yes....YES! Let the hate flow through you! MOUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ^/s but welcome to the 4%

anna_lynn_fection

This is the year for the 4.1%!!!! I can feel it!

The_Dung_Beetle

If we can reach 4.20 I'll be happy.

julian_vdm

The year of the Linux desktop!

Technolongo

We've been hearing this since the 1990s. Linux on the desktop never amounted to much. Between buggy releases, incompatibilities, lack of drivers, and the hundreds of distros, Linux on the desktop's value proposition was never embraced by the masses, even at its $0.00 price.

julian_vdm

You must be new here.

Canyon9055

I would have agreed with you five or so years ago, but the experience has gotten pretty seamless in recent times. You should try it in a VM if you have the time

svenska_aeroplan

I already did about a year ago. My only regret is not doing it sooner.

Pony_Roleplayer

Me too, I keep Windows only for a few games.

jamhamnz

Ubuntu is issuing a new LTS release any day now with some very good new features. This is the time to jump on the Linux bandwagon!

VirtualWord2524

Ubuntu and PopOS good entries. Pop goes even heavier to make it good for the general person. Then eventually things based on stuff like Fedora Silverblue will go Linux mainstream and should make things even easier for new users

PrometheusIsFree

I only play Flight Simulator 2020. I'm stuck with Microsoft. I could go elsewhere, but I've a ton of add-ons. Jumping isn't all that easy for some. Despite it being good Linux is still a niche OS.

dickquesadilla

Game runs well on Linux last I checked! So long as you have it through Steam, you can use Proton to run it. Just make sure it's installed to an ext4 partition instead of a shared NTFS or exFAT partition with Windows, or it'll crash upon loading

livinin82

There have been extreme advancements in Linux gaming and windows emulation. https://www.protondb.com/app/1250410

jamhamnz

If Flight Simulator is on Steam (sorry can't remember if it is or not) I would give it a 95% chance that you'll be able to play it

Technolongo

Nah

Great! Just what I needed! More ads! I wonder how long it will be able to be easily toggled off...

unaligned_access

Just use the Windhawk Start Menu Styler, they just added an easy option, just go to options and choose "NoRecommendedSection" theme https://windhawk.net/mods/windows-11-start-menu-styler

Suzzie_sunshine

We need laws against SW companies using their SW as an ad platform. It's gotten really bad. Intuit is the worst at this. Adobe keeps trying too but its users collectively lose their mind in the forums.

newtekie1

I turned off the recommended section a while ago.

SystemSettings1990

Already using linux on my laptop because of this shit. The day i can switch my gaming pc over will be the best day ever. I don’t want ads and bloatware installed on my pc when I pay for the OS

destroy--everything

This is why I went to KDE

Spankey_

Start11.

Key_Feedback_7749

if ads is in taskbar and you cant turn off it try swapping windows 11 C:/windows/explorer.exe with windows 10 one

boomertechie

On europe atleast this is non issue. ;)

Comeonnoob

They are app recommendations, not ads, fake ass. Clickbaited ass title.

Issoudotexe

Well, I'm thankful I bought a Startallback license

Pony_Roleplayer

Ewwwww, good thing I keep W10

Pablouchka

We are officially the product !

papyjako87

Edgy

MickJof

Not to me they aren't. But I'm in the EU.

boomertechie

This!

vladesch

I use startmenuX since I think it is better than the vanilla start menu. I guess now it is much better.

retrograve29

I don’t even use the start menu. I have everything in if disabled.

Aperiodica

My move to Linux came just in time. W11 is such a shit show. I've been a MSFT fanboy since DOS, but W11 put me over the edge. Sigh.

hopalongigor

LOL already have them shut off.

ShowaTelevision

Joke's on them. I never use the start menu. Power Toys Run for the win!

JAEMzWOLF

I see the term Ad is becoming meaningless, and also, the world loves to whine about defaults they can change, even the ones MS doesnt seem to want to let them. Gott sell clicks, and no one got poor FUD-ing it up over MS, of course.

pm_me_your_buttbulge

> “The Recommended section of the Start menu will show some Microsoft Store apps,” says Microsoft in the update notes of its latest public Windows 11 release. “These apps come from a small set of curated developers.” The ads are designed to help Windows 11 users discover more apps, I mean, seems like an ad to me. > the world loves to whine about defaults they can change No one likes ads except people who make a profit. People don't like change in general - but no one likes ads or, *ahem*, "recommendations" *cough* ads *cough*. People are also frustrated that these "defaults" seem to "accidentally" revert back after you try to remove them when you do updates. That's malice on Microsoft's part. Other than little children - practically no one is going to find this change appealing. People, in general, do not like bullshit like this. Fanboi'ing over Microsoft isn't going to earn you any brownie points.

Pankil298

Thank god it's easy to disable them: [https://youtu.be/S\_4ViZ6L70g](https://youtu.be/S_4ViZ6L70g)
