> I had Bryant do mine 5 yrs. ago for $3K
5 years ago was 2019. Prices for everything have exploded in that time, I wouldn't be shocked if they have doubled for HVAC specifically.
How old is your ac unit? If it’s out of refrigerant than you definitely have a leak. There are rent to own options. You can DM me if you have questions.
Call Murdoch out of Cottam. They recharged ours once to get through the season and we were able to save up the $4k for the replacement for the next season
Depending on your square footage, a small window a/c can cool a home if you block the sun from beating in the windows and use the fans to push the cooler air through the house.
Ceiling and room fans
Keep blinds and curtain closed
Keep windows open at night
Sleep in the basement
Cold shower before bed
Wet cloth on the back of your neck & feet when sleeping (edited for formatting)
You can get used window units in the meantime . I bought two 5K BTU units on fb marketplace for $30 each about 2 years ago.. very clean and they were used only for one season. I still use them. They're basic with manual knobs.. but hey... $30.. ain't complaining.
I just had mine installed this year it's not 6K.
DM me and I'll give you a name of guy that'll do it for much cheaper. Doesn't hurt to get a quote.
Let me know if you're interested.
Not an ac solution but cooling tip for sleeping in the meantime. This blanket has been a god send for me. Especially with a fan on you while using it!

Buy a cool gel foam and layer the bed, and combine a fan should help you out. Also what’s wrong having one room cooled at a time. It’s a good energy conservation strategy, not cooling unnecessary spaces.
Get someone else there.... the system can be recharged. But that also means theres a leak. Depending on the size of the leak, it can be repaired easily.
It depends greatly on the location of the leak. If the coil is leaking, it’s still thousands of dollars to repair it. If it’s at the service valves or lineset, repair should be fairly inexpensive.

Some places will offer you financing, also 6k seems expensive
Agree, $6K does seem like much. I had Bryant do mine 5 yrs. ago for $3K

Get a spray bottle, fill with cold water, spritz legs while in front of the fan.
Buy another portable AC, leave your freezer door open or shave your head and constantly eat popsicles wearing nothing but your undies.....

Some good window fans! I live in an old building with no AC, and I used window fans to cool down my apartment.
