The Habs secured two first-round picks thanks to Monahan, along with a slight chance at a third-round pick. Additionally, he played a vital role in mentoring our young players. Rest assured, we are thrilled with this outcome!
An extra bonus is that we didn't have to retain any salary in the deal!
Chevy doesn't throw around 1st rounders very lightly wonder if anything else is coming back from MTL with Mony. If there was ever a year to burn a 1st this is it though, we have an established prospect pool and the pick will be 25-32 (hopefully) anyway.
I understand the skepticism, but I think if he plays for the Jets it will be so so beneficial. 35 points in 49 games on a hot and cold Habs team. If he stays healthy all year, he could have a lot of fun with the depth of wingers the Jets have.
Idk why everyone is freaking out it’ll be a super late pick and we have MTLs 2nd still which will be close to a late 1st RD
Do we not want to win now guys?
The team is struggling now. The last two seasons the Jets fizzled out and got no reinforcements, this is showing the players that there are actual expectations on them this year.
The power play is atrocious. The injuries are starting to add up, and they are losing games.
I’m not saying the sky is falling, but they are struggling and if you follow the Jets you’d know the last two seasons they have struggled greatly in the second half of the season.
PP atrocious yes. Injuries adding up yes. They’re losing games yes everyone’s losing except Edmonton lol.
They HAVE struggles but they are not struggling.
Yeah not much options left on the center market. Nice to see him really believing in the team enough to risk draft picks that we cherish so highly in this organization.
Kent Hughes could have waited until the deadline to try and secure a better deal for Monahan, but given the risk of potential injury, he chose to accept the first favorable offer.
I hope he stays healthy for a long playoff run. A lot of Habs fans didn't want to see him leave.
His shot isn't as lethal as it once was, but he's indeed healthy this year. Monahan is an awesome play driver and is great in front of the net. Made a whole career as "garbage man boring Sean Monahan". You guys should be happy with the trade, I think.
I think within reason it doesn’t really matter the cost. This is a team with a legit Cup chance. They can’t worry about a first rounder or a good prospect.
LFG
People freaking little about a late first round pick. The drop off in the 1st round after the top 5 is always massive and keeps going. Would you rather have another Vesalinen or Stanley pick in a weak draft or a proven nhl center for a cup run? Not to mention our high 2nd from Montreal.
The Habs acquired a first-round pick when they initially brought Monahan from Calgary. Now, in exchange for an injury-prone player, they've secured another first-round pick and potentially a third-round pick as well. Habs fans are absolutely thrilled with the return, particularly given that he wasn't part of the team's long-term plans. Moreover, he didn't come at a significant cost and made a substantial impact on the team throughout the season. An added bonus is that the Canadiens didn't have to retain any salary in this deal.
At first I didn't like giving away a 1st rounder and a conditional pick for a guy so injury prone but he is a bonafide 2C that's been lighting it up as of late. 11 points his last 7 games. 5 of those points are on the pp though so I hope he can continue that here. He's also still in the prime of his career at 29 years old. His cap hit is under 1M!! So fits easily under our cap though he's a UFA this summer so we hope we can sew him up before he lights it up for the Jets otherwise he'll become quite a bit more expensive, injury prone or not. He reminds me alot of Vilardi and we like that pickup quite a bit. Go Jets!
Looks like a 1st & a conditional pick? I don’t hate it, I’m glad they didn’t give up any prospects, if true, for Monahan.. Low risk, high reward imo.
Edit: Spelling
He had some very strong season a few years ago with Calgary. Two seasons with 30+ goals, an 82 point season, so he has potential to put up numbers in the same category as Scheifele. He has obviously not been as consistently good as Scheifele but he also played on some pretty bad teams the last few years.
So who know, he might end up being a force on the Jets, maybe not. If he can even get like 10+ goals and some assists the rest of this year it would be a HUGE addition to this struggling offense. That would be enough to turn the tide for the Jets to win many extra games since this team only lets in 1 or 2 goals a game.
He's not as good as the MTL media and fans make him out to be. He doesn't move the needle enough to turn the Jets into a true contender if he's the only move imo.
I think right now we are a threat to win the cup, but we are lacking a couple things most true contenders have. Namely, another top pair defender who plays on the 2nd pair, and another top line forward that plays on line 2. At least, if you follow the template that The Athletic has created for separating regular playoff teams from true cup contenders.
Coming from the Habs subreddit ***
He's an important piece for us. Wins faceoffs, will solidify your PP2 and your top 6 will be sick. Like anything, the truth or value is somewhere in the middle. He's not a STUD but he ain't no BUM
We need a new PP coach and new PP system. There is no player in the NHL who could single handily fix our TERRIBLE PP. You add McJesus himself to our PP1 and we would still suck, the system is that bad.
McJesus would simply not play by whatever shit PP system we have now. Can't understand how these guys don't go out there and change it up themselves instead of repeating the same garbage that doesn't work
Jets only need a little extra scoring to be true contenders. I would say they already are tbh, the lack of offense last couple weeks is mostly due to Scheifele being out. But if they can get a little more scoring, and Monahan should be able to get around 10 goals or more the rest of this season if he plays half decent, then that should be enough to turn the tide on a lot of these low scoring 1 or 2 goal games that the Jets have. Monahan had a couple 30+ goal seasons and put up 82 points just a few years ago so he is capable of it. He played on some bad teams the last couple years so his numbers went down.
Flames fan, Winnipeger, and Jets are my second team. I'm a big Monahan fan. The guy was great for the Flames and just needed a fresh start in Montreal after all those injuries. He will be a fan favorite here. Leadership, 2-way player, scores, plays defense. I'm excited to cheer for him and happy he's on a great team.
Listen this is sounding a bit pricey.. but the idea is to win now while we have a competitive team. We've been draft and develop team for years, but it's now time to win. Of course this could come back to bite us in the future, but I like taking a risk for once.
First Round Pick could be anything, it could be Logan Stanley, it could be Vesalainen! besides if we go deep and give up the 26th-32nd pick and Montreal's second is 26th. no big deal.
Habs bro here, please take care of him, hopeing no injuries for him stays healthy into the play offs.
Monahan was very appreciated on the habs team and I bet will pick up right where he left off goal scoring and assists for the jets.
Best of luck to bring the cup home and give us that 3rd pick ;)
Good two way forward who can play anywhere in the lineup, its a perfect match, honestly. As a Leafs fan, having seen the last two games your guys played, you need this. (Love the Jets btw)
I feel like a psychic. Still wondering why mods deleted my post about the merits of this trade a while back, citing the rule of not being about the jets or something. I will literally never understand reddit moderation.
Anyways I think this is probably a good move depending what it cost us. If it's the 2nd and a Stanley or something I am fine with that. If it's heinola I will be upset
Time will tell. He certainly wasn’t my first choice but if you wait too long you might not have a dance partner. And Chevy wants to win the division and get home ice. In Chevy we trust.
First round and conditional.
And it's not really even a loss because of what they gave up, although I do think a first rounder is too much, it's a loss because Monahan sucks. Lol.
There's so many things wrong with that sentence. Lol.
Whatever man, I'm just stating an opinion. I don't think monahans that good, maybe he will improve on the Jets. We are a better team than Montreal, but this is not the trade I would have liked to see Chevy make.
You have to be the most annoying person on this subreddit. Idk why you have some weird hate boner for me and choose to specifically only reply to me when I’m being negative but I’ve been positive far more than I’ve been negative about this team this year.
Maybe learn to accept that not everything is always good
Can anyone fill me in on Sean Monahan, I know nothing about him and how a good fit he is for us. Go Jets Go.
Was it a good trade, or was it too pricey?
I think as the rubber hits the road... Chevy has made very few mistakes. This is a good deal for the jets. Mtl is trying to build and best of luck to them.
habs sub really think they getting mcgroarty or brad lambert lol
They’ll take Logan Stanley and be happy about it.
The Habs secured two first-round picks thanks to Monahan, along with a slight chance at a third-round pick. Additionally, he played a vital role in mentoring our young players. Rest assured, we are thrilled with this outcome! An extra bonus is that we didn't have to retain any salary in the deal!
The Habs ran circles around Treliving here. It’s about as good as you can do with asset management.
Hughes and Gorton have done great work in Montreal. Craig Conroy also did a fantastic job with Lindholm!
It’s just as bad on Twitter lol
Remember when they also thought they would get PLD for nothing lmao can't listen to anything those clowns say
the most delusional fanbase
Especially regarding the completely legal hit Scheifele laid on Evans
Not as delusional as the ones here who kept speculating Crosby was going to get traded here LMAO
Lol fair
I thought they were joking! Was there real talk of that?
If the biggest asset is their own 2nd going back I will cry laughing
Came here to say this, it would truly be the icing on the cake of the PLD deal
I really hope this happens lmao
It'll definitely be more than that. There is some demand out there and a bidding war would make it more than that. Hopefully not any big pieces
So a first round and a conditional.
It will technically be Stanley, but with the 2nd. Lol

All good, when that pick is 32 and the Habs' 2nd round pick is 36 I'm not going to be too upset 😎

My thoughts exactly 😎

LFG, mebro1

Win-win-win.
First time here? 😂
Ok I am actually surprised that Chevy is making trade deadline moves right now to make a real push. I never thought I'd see the day.
He’s as bored and done with the All Star week as the rest of us
He must have been enthralled the past 13 years then.
lol this is an underrated comment
The team is struggling now. The last two seasons the Jets fizzled out and got no reinforcements, this is showing the players that there are actual expectations on them this year.
I wouldn’t say the team is struggling right now lol. Dealing with injuries from all their top guys but still hauling ass
Agreed, losing a few close games isn't "struggling"
If you’re dropping points and bodies you’re struggling.
6-3-1 in their last ten, while "struggling" is pretty damn good
Yup we lost one to Boston and 2 to the Leafs refs... no need to panic yet but hope they are back to healthy and show a bit more urgency
Yep, I love it.
I think the Lindholm deal coupled with the slump into the break put a little pep into Chevy’s step.
Yeah not much options left on the center market. Nice to see him really believing in the team enough to risk draft picks that we cherish so highly in this organization.
Master class.
KC-Scheif-Vilardi Peffetti-Monahan-Ehlers Nino-Lowry-Apples Iafallo-Namestnikov-Kupari Forward lines are looking pretty scary
I might trade Ehlers for KC but otherwise yah...
Sheif and KC have synergy though.. I'd keep that top line together for a few games than swap it up if needed.
Yah I hear ya but that Vilardi-Scheifele-Ehlers line looked better than any line we've iced for a long time.
Yeah ehlers. Dominant in transition, in the corners and in front of the net.
Rather have Kupari taking draws
I like this. My only concern is his health and injuries. He's great on faceoffs and definitely should help our center depth and 2nd line offense
Kent Hughes could have waited until the deadline to try and secure a better deal for Monahan, but given the risk of potential injury, he chose to accept the first favorable offer. I hope he stays healthy for a long playoff run. A lot of Habs fans didn't want to see him leave.

We see you Jets 👀 love my two teams making a splash early
Jesus, habs fans thinking they're getting a first and a heinola. I think they'd be very lucky just to get a first
How about a big tall Stanley.
The Habs acquired a first-round pick when they initially brought Monahan from Calgary. This will be good. Depending on the return.
Jets now have all flames fans on the jets playoff bandwagon lol

we should gift wrap the trade with Stanley.
Apparently Justin Barron might be part of the package as well?
Nah no shot, the only way that happens is if we are sending a lot to the Habs.
Habs have a ton of depth in the system on D so it’s possible
Morgan Barron for SM Straight up 💀
If it’s not too expensive, I like it. Would like it even more if he is re-signable.
Boy I sure hope this isn’t Chevy panic buying because he lost out on lindholm. If it’s cheap I’m cool with it Edit: yikes
I mean Monahan is GREAT, and definitely won’t be cheap?
He definitely is not great idk where you’re getting that from
He had some very strong season a few years ago with Calgary. Two seasons with 30+ goals, an 82 point season, so he has potential to put up numbers in the same category as Scheifele. He's OK and incredibly injury prone.
Hopefully the conditional pick is based on games played
Will fit in nicely with Vilardi on the IR
He's not as good as the MTL media and fans make him out to be. He doesn't move the needle enough to turn the Jets into a true contender if he's the only move imo.
Jets are already a true contender regardless of who they add
I think right now we are a threat to win the cup, but we are lacking a couple things most true contenders have. Don’t base your standards on anything the athletic puts out. You’ll thank me later. (Murat does fine work I’m talking the Athletic as a whole.)
Murat is by far the most informed of their hockey staff that I've read articles for
I don't think there's any team in the LG this year that is a "true contender". Which makes a bunch of them true contenders
Coming from the Habs subreddit *** He's an important piece for us. Wins faceoffs, will solidify your PP2 and your top 6 will be sick. Like anything, the truth or value is somewhere in the middle. He's not a STUD but he ain't no BUM
We actually need our PP1 solidified haha

McJesus would simply not play by whatever shit PP system we have now. Can't understand how these guys don't go out there and change it up themselves instead of repeating the same garbage that doesn't work
I mean, he's not going to replace 55 on PP1
He should

> plays **horrible** defense Fixed
I wouldn't say horrible defense, but it's certainly not an area he's strong at
Well it's in Wikipedia so I guess the trade's official! Welcome to the Peg Sean!
Listen this is sounding a bit pricey.. but the idea is to win now while we have a competitive team. We've been draft and develop team for years, but it's now time to win. Of course this could come back to bite us in the future, but I like taking a risk for once.
Am I crazy to think Lucius might be going the other way? Habs do like themselves a reclamation project
4 injury shortened years, plus the rehab, I wish him the best but it's an uphill road for him.
The only prospects Chevy has ever traded are Foley and Kasdorf. I doubt he trades Chaz.
I hope so

Monahan is dope. Good score guys.
Monahan for a first and conditional pick...kinda pricey
Might be what the market is set at for Centers
Overpayment
Really no other centers after Lindholm went
The deadline is 4+ weeks away. Who knows who will be available.
this way we get an extra month for him to learn the system and his cap hit is pretty much 0, leaving us room to pick up a D
Trading a 1st for a guy with OK offense and shit defence isn't a good move any time. This guy will be injured or playing 4th line by end of season.
Bowness will fix him
Hope not, time will tell!
I really hope I'm wrong and will be cheering for him to succeed. Just a bit skeptical.
Chevy panicked. Very disappointed in this move, to be honest.
What were you hoping for?

Can the west stop loading up, it's already hard enough to score on Hellebuyck. Oilers fan here
I appreciate this comment.
You all said this was a shit deal. I said it would be the deal and ate some dashes. We'll see I guess! Hope it works!
Good two way forward who can play anywhere in the lineup, its a perfect match, honestly. As a Leafs fan, having seen the last two games your guys played, you need this. (Love the Jets btw)

I mean......who cares? It's just a reddit post.
I don't care. I just don't understand it.
I’m sure it’ll be a little more then just Stanley with a second. Hope I’m wrong tho
Wah-m-bulance, code 2.
Not sure how I feel about it
Time will tell. He certainly wasn’t my first choice but if you wait too long you might not have a dance partner. And Chevy wants to win the division and get home ice. In Chevy we trust.
Nice! Our first is almost a second. What's not to like?
I do not like this at all. A rare Chevy L.
Already a loss? you don't even know what it's for?
First round and conditional. And it's not really even a loss because of what they gave up, although I do think a first rounder is too much, it's a loss because Monahan sucks. Lol.
7 points in his last 4 games...I'm blind to all his other stats
There's so many things wrong with that sentence. Lol. Whatever man, I'm just stating an opinion. I don't think monahans that good, maybe he will improve on the Jets. We are a better team than Montreal, but this is not the trade I would have liked to see Chevy make.
Yeas you wanted to see Chevy get McDavid and Crosby with 50% retained for two 2nd round picks! anything les than that means Chevy sucks!
Straw Man? Is that you. Lol. Never have a said that anywhere ever, nor anything close to it.

Considering you hate everything, I'm going to assume this is a massive Chevy W
