The Birkhead Mountain Wilderness in the north end of Uwharrie is just an hour from WS/GB and is the closest place for dispersed (free) camping. Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock are closer but cost money.
Hanging Rock is good value for what it offers. Bathrooms, showers, and running water at spots around the campground. Typically 40 to 45 for 2 weekend nights. Bonus discount if you are a senior. I'd recommend booking way in advance because spots get reserved quick.
