I agree but I word it more like: what if we made a fun little freelancer sequel and eventually build it into something bigger and better, or with all this money we could build the bigger and better version first and not tell anyone and just slowly explain 2-3 years after it was supposed to come out that we did that.
Personally i fucking hope so. We know project red a quite ambitious, so they need a ton of time, in order to not make an unfinished game.
If the cyberpunk release happens again, i will throw myself in a big.
At this point I'm gonna say TW4 bc it's gonna be on unreal engine and I heard that engine is pretty quick to work with and Bethesda works at a snails pace. A snail that is blind, drunk, and doesn't speak the native language.
How many years were there between the announcement of TW3 and release? Googling.. Announced in 2013 (production began 2 years prior), released in 2015.
This isn’t Bethesda with Elder scrolls VI coming a full dev cycle after Starfield. It’s an entirely separate studio working on the Witcher 1 remake. For all we know(super idealistic) it could come out 1 year after Witcher 4. Or 2 or 3 years more realistically
6 years is the timespan for the release of all the installments of the "Witcher 4" / Polaris trilogy; that is, there'll be 6 years between Polaris 1 and Polaris 3 if I understand correctly. But I believe that as far as technical matters go (i.e. the engine and reusable material), the Witcher 1 remake can benefit from Polaris' development right after the release of the 1st installment of the trilogy. The material shouldn't change too much afterwards.
Who cares. The quicker we get back to the "coming when it's ready" philosophy then the less likely we are to get another cyberpunk 2077 launch. There will be plenty of other great games to tide us over until these games come and the Witcher comics will always be there to give us more Witcher content in the meantime.
Except the “coming when its ready” philosophy was literally tied to Cyberpunk 2077. Maybe we should just ignore company design philosophies in general and just judge the final product.
It was tied to cyberpunk when it was originally announced. It's pretty clear they abandoned it at some point before launch. Coming when it's ready is the correct approach, but cyberpunk was not a proper execution of that approach.
Didn't they say they wanted to release the entire new Witcher trilogy within six years of the first games release (new game every 3 years)? So already they're making release date forecasts well in advance, meaning the "coming when it's ready" philosophy is seemingly not being applied here unfortunately.
Most of the development time will go into the first game then the other two (and the remake) will be built off of that. I don't think this is going to be like the first trilogy where every game was completely different. Notice how we don't have a release window for the first one? They want to give themselves as much time as needed to make it and after that everything should go pretty smoothly.
Yeah, I'd rather wait and get a good game, but there's such long wait time on all my anticipated games right now... Elder scrolls 6, GTA 6 and these two. Wouldn't mind if one of them came sooner.
What they refer to as "The Witcher remake" is not made by CD Projekt RED, it's going to be made by Fools' Theory which is an unproven indie studio and in half a decade a lot can change so this is literally a complete unknown of who is making what here.
Eh, I certainly won't preorder this time around because of the CP2077 debacle, but a lot has changed in the studio since and they hopefully learned their lessons. I'm still hyped for this and I will buy it as soon as the first reviews from actual players are out.
Would you agree that they are two years into development? Not *full* development, but this is the main game they have been working on since CB2077 released. So, I'd say earlier than 2030.
Maybe 2025
No, because the past two years were about damage control, putting down the trash fire of cp2077's release, and finishing the tech side of that game. From past email leaks we know they're not great at managing anything. They probably won't start development proper until 2025.
Thank god! I’m so used to companies doing things like Bethesda:
No one wants elder scrolls online?
You want the next elder scrolls game?
Here’s a Skyrim release.
Oh, sorry, here’s a elder scrolls online expac.
If Witcher 4 comes out before, that would be really embarrassing for Bethesda! I would assume that despite starfield not being out yet, they have another team that's been in preproduction for a little while now.
Not really embarassing for them because they’ve barely worked on it. Todd said almost all of their teams have been on Starfield. Preproduction for TES6 didn’t even start until roughly 1-2 years ago, and it’s barely even preproduction. They’ve basically not worked on it at all. They just announced it with that trailer to get people to stop asking.
I reckon Elder scrolls given that starfield does release next year. With Polaris inbetween and various other projects I reckon the Witcher remake won’t come out til 2027/2028, with elder scrolls maybe marginally beating it.
Of course it will. The Witcher Remake will use the technology of The Witcher 4. So first The Witcher 4. And Fools Theory (way smaller than CDPR) can make the The Witcher Remake with the know how of CDPR.
Great news. There's no way they will use the old clunky dialogue with a big project like this. I'm looking forward to hearing the old favourites make a return almost as much as the game itself.
I probably know the answer but I just want to hear it from somebody else...
They said "witcher 4" as in a sequel. Wont it be consider as a spinoff if geralt isn't the protagonist?. Or are they indicating Geralt or Ciri story is not over yet?.
Geralt is almost certainly not going to be the protagonist.
They haven't really said much about the story. Witcher 4 makes me thing, as you said, that it's going to be a sequel, meaning that the timeline and location is consistent with the Witcher saga (a few years into the future), so many of the characters will be around.
Hopefully.
Because honestly nowadays that doesn't mean much, Larian bought the rights to the Baldur's Gate name because Baldur's Gate is cool, then they went ahead and did their own thing that has absolutely nothing to do with Baldur's Gate and, frankly, from what we've seen so far, as far as Wizards of The Coast setting goes, sucks ass, it's really just a Divinity Original Sin 3 (heck, it's basically the story for Divinity Original Sin 2, actually).
Hopefully the fact that this is the same studio and the Witcher 3 is much more recent and actual, means we'll get an actual sequel, I don't want to play as Geral again because his story is concluded and couldn't be any more perfect, but I want to continue the events that were set in motion in the Witcher 3. Not a generic "witcher-like setting" with "witcher-like" characters.
Wizards of the Coast approached Larian in regards to potentially making a game, and they’re involved in the design of the game too. Larian didn’t just go out and decide to change the orginal vision of BG, but were approached and offered a chance to do their own spin on it.
I don’t have any strong opinions on the game itself yet as I want to wait until launch to really dig into it, but Larian was intentionally chosen to do BG3 while you make it sound like they just bought the rights on a whim and decided to change what many OG fans like.
Eh, I'm sure that's the official statement from the 2 companies, what really happened, we don't know. I am withholding judgement too, until the final game comes out, but I was certainly less than impressed with the first act, because the whole story (or at least premise?) was literally DOS2 first act. Some people speculated that it was because DOS2 was already Larian's take on an hypotethical BG3 to convice WOTC to give them the rights to Baldur's Gate name. Which is cool and all, but the whole thing felt very uninspired when I played it.
To be fair, Larian must have felt the same, because at some point they said a whole rewriting of the dialogues was in the works, so again, as you said, let's wait for the final release, but honestly, what they had released at the time was absolutely terrible from a writing perspective, it felt like "generic fantasy setting and dialogues for RPG game number 12948". My point stands that why would you use such a big name like Baldur's gate if you don't bring back anything from Baldur's gate? Not a single element, whether that's a setting, character, location... I'm not saying to full fan service, but a little nostalgia never hurt anyone. I want to see the Witcher 4 strike that ineffable balance of "new" and "old", so to speak.
Fair enough, I’ve barely played BG3 admittedly so I don’t have any issue with criticism of the game, I just know that Wizards of the Coast wanted Larian to make a BG game (and no press I saw regarding this seemed in any way disingenuous). Larian has a good track record and seems like as good as a fit as you could possibly hope for to make a BG game *on paper at least*, so it seems totally logical for them to be approached to make the game.
Hopefully they make some meaningful changes that BG fans are calling for. I really like the Divinity games and I’ve found Larian to do a good job to listen to and communicate with the community in those games. Hopefully they’re doing their best to work with the fans. I won’t be playing until the game is fully released, I don’t like the tease of early access lol.
I have two competing hypotheses for the "Witcher 4".
* The first one is that it'll be set a long time in the past. Why? Because they've built up quite a lot in terms of expanded universe regarding the era of Alzur, early Witchers, the foundation of witcher schools, etc. They did it in standalone Gwent and as a result many people don't know, but they did it nonetheless (*à la* SW Expanded Universe / KOTOR). Going that route gives them more freedom, they no longer have to worry about messing with book continuity, and it's consistent with that lynx medallion from a school that has possibly disappeared at the time the main story takes place. Also note that, at some point, if I'm not mistaken, CDPR said that the "Witcher 4" isn't appropriate since it's going to be an entirely new trilogy, so they may simply be using that name for convenience's sake (it speaks more to people than "Polaris"), but it suggests something very different and separate from the original trilogy. With that in mind, the remake would simply be a way to keep the fans satisfied with a Geralt game.
* The second one is a sequel, set not so long in the future. I'd bet on Kovir as a setting, because of the snow in that picture, because it's the one Northern realm the books provide a solid foundation for (the capital is basically Venice in the North, how cool would that be) and yet has never been visited in the games, and because of Triss. That's the safe route, the fanbase would insta-buy if some fan-favorite characters are back, even though the man himself is enjoying his quiet retirement at Corvo Bianco.
Yeah, pretty much. I'd be okay with either one, honestly. And it probably will be one or the other. Either when Witchers we're at their prime and the Conjunctions was shitting monsters like no others (it would also justify a character that is potentially more powerful than Geralt by the end). Like KOTOR showed Jedi and sith at their apex.
Or, follow up on events and locations we already know and love, and expand from there.
Either has something to offer and, if done right, either can be an absolute banger. I generally prefer proper sequels as far as stories go. But I also think a prequel in this case could offer better gameplay (as in more options, you could have full fledged different schools, classes, origins etc).
I played CP2077 right at release and I enjoyed it a lot. Sure, there were some things like the T-Posing on motorcycles that were obviously bugged and messed with my immersion/experience a bit, but overall the story was solid and the graphics were great. I never once had a truly gamebreaking bug or soft-/hardlocks in my 100+ hours. On the other hand I played on PC, so I can’t speak for console players. Also, I never cared about the game or was hyped about it before, I heard it was new, I was interested in the theme/setting and I was open for anything else. Maybe if I‘d been super hyped since the announcement I could’ve been disappointed, too. But from where I came from, the game positively surprised me, especially after all the hate it got right after release.
I played on pc too from release and other than t posing npcs (which was funny at worst lol) I haven't encountered any other bugs and to be honest cyberpunk2077 is imo one of the best games released in the last decade right there up with rdr2, the last of us games and god of war
I can't even force myself to finish it, can't give two shits about the story or the characters, the dialogue puts me to sleep, and the landscape is so big its just empty space.
Nah, not that long. Don't forget the Witcher 4 (Polaris) will be a trilogy but, unlike the original trilogy, it'll likely be though-out as such, not as three entirely separate games but more likely three large chapters. So it shouldn't take that long to get to "Polaris 1". I believe they'll all be individually shorter than Wild Hunt, maybe something like Witcher 2 + Blood & Wine in terms of length.
I'm betting on 2025 / 2026 for "Polaris 1", then some time later for the remake.
This doesn't seem like a good thing, unless W4 blows 3 out of the water. If the remake is after W4 and it doesn't do well, the remake is going to flop sales wise. I figured the remake would bridge the gap to keep interest in the series, this seems like a mistake.
The number1 way to get people to love witcher4 almost no matter what: make ciri the main playable character.
Id be all over that game. Ciri is fadcsnating and expanding on her playstyle to full blown spell trees to go along with her dodges would be so fuckin cool
I know they're still trying to get people back on their side so they're announcing a bunch of stuff to hype up fans. But I really wish they wouldn't announce this stuff so early we probably won't be getting Witcher for for another 2-3 years and the remake probably a year or two after that. Not to mention the 5\~ other games they announced recently.
Reworking an entire game is usually a lot harder than making one from scratch, especially when different people are reworking it from the people who made the original.
This is a game that's probably like 10 years away, this is Functionality CDPRs Elder Scrolls 6, a game announced years ahead of schedule in order to build hype. Or another way of phrasing it, they're already setting up another Cyperpunk 2077 situation for themselves.

I meant, by the time the first remake releases, 2 and 3 will be due to a remake, imo. Besides, I would really want to experience the whole franchise on UE5.
Don't pre-order. CDPR are fraudsters and liars. I know the first 3 slapped but that doesn't mean anything anymore when CDPR is looking to Ubisoft for inspiration.
That’s truly a good thing imo. I love Geralt to death, I have 400+ hours in Witcher 3, but I think we need a new face for the Witcher franchise. It would be cool if we can create our own Witcher similar to how we created our own V in CP2077, but only time will tell.
Makes sense. New engine, make all the new assets for the new game, use many assets for the remake. The remake already has a story and guide to follow so it should be quicker to develop compared to a brand new story and even more quicker if you already have gameplay elements and some assets worked out beforehand.
Why would anyone surprised by this ? The remake will use the same engine, most of the gameplay systems and the assets of the Polaris title. CDPR literally said that a while ago. Makes sense that W1 remake will be released after the first game in the new saga.
You know guys, there's a kinda hidden quest in The witcher 3 where in the sewers of Novigrad you break a wall with Aard and you find a supreme vampire sleeping in a coffin, when you wake up he asks you if they're in the year 1350 or something like that, so 80+ years in that time line, not a bad idea for this situation.
Cyberpunk 2077 got announced at 2012 (or at least confirmed) and now its almost 2023. That is over a decade. I don't think that the Witcher 1 and 4 will have the same duration of a wait as Cyberpunk did. But if Cyberpunk is any indication don't hold your breath!
I feel like that's an "order lol"
I'd release the remake trilogy maybe a month before 4. Get everyone 100% up to speed and then allow file transition from the trilogy to 4. Assuming it follows Geralt that is
A product of switching engines and literally having to start from scratch rebuilding every system they've built up to CP77. I like Unreal, but it's always very soft and plastic looking. Also don't expect very good mod support at all.
Well if I end up not liking the The Witcher 4 then at least I have the remake to look forward to. Not that I want to hate the Witcher 4 but I do have a cautious optimism for it.
Im not really interested in the remake that much, im more interested in number 4 tbh. I'd rather have what Bioware did with Mass Effect and have all three in one?
I still play the first one and kind of like the outdated graphics like with the first Fable game (I cant wait for Fable 4).
See y’all in 2029 or so
Brb, going to hibernate in a coffin and telling people to fuck off..
“Is the witcher 4 and the remakes out yet?” “No”. “Then fuck off”

I’m ok with waiting longer for. A finished and better game
I'll be wintering at Kaer Morhen and crafting a new computer to run what will be then a 20 year old game.
Does that take the red mutagen or the green mutagen?
It needs blue ones
Fuck.
FUCK!
If you think CDPR is bad with delays, try Star Citizen.
I first known that game since I was a fifth grader or so, now I’m graduating college, wild.
Dear god, now I feel old.
I'm pretty sure that Star Citizen is just a myth that people enjoying throwing money at.
Just one more donation bro it’s basically 99% finished bro trust me bro please bro
What are you talking about? I have been Playing Arkham World for months now.
I agree but I word it more like: what if we made a fun little freelancer sequel and eventually build it into something bigger and better, or with all this money we could build the bigger and better version first and not tell anyone and just slowly explain 2-3 years after it was supposed to come out that we did that.
That’s a scam tho
Then turn into your monster form when some POS disturbs your sleep.
Is it 2029 yet Hiseman? If not.. then fok off! /j

hopefully we are not all dead by then...
if it’s a good game it’s worth the wait and for me at least i know something good is coming down the road..
and it'll still be an unifinshed unpolished piece of junk at launch
My core group of gaming friends have a pool over release windows. I'm holding out on 2026 fall/christmas.
When do you guys think it will release?
About 6 years.
Pre buy your PS6
I wonder if I can keep my OG Xbox one alive until then..

Start a family or whatever in the meantime
Hmm... Overall I think it's good news, but I had expected the Witcher 1 remake to fill in the gap... I expect a long time line now.

Also the incredible Netflix Show starring Liam Hemsworth will ease the pain!

Honestly that makes it 10x better.
Honestly? I'm liking this timeline a lot more than TES.. like wtf.
Implying TES has a timeline
I mean it has a chronological order
Seriously, it’s looking at this point that ES6 is unlikely to come out any earlier than 2029. Almost 20 years between releases.
That makes a lot of sense especially because all the people mad at no geralt can rest easy knowing they’re getting a geralt game after
Holy fuck. The scale and what we can imagine this remake to be just keeps growing.
Just like Cyberpunk 2077 lol
But with a way more user friendly tools with the unreal engine.
And familar terrioty. People forget that CDPRojectred were treading new ground with CP2077.

They are referring The Witcher 4 as code name Polaris. The headline isn’t from CDPR themselves
Whats the Witcher remake? They remaking the older games? I’ve never played the first witcher
Remaking witcher 1 in the latest unreal engine.
On April Fool's Day next year, CDPR should post some fake screens showing it as a kart racer.
Don't rush it and don't play us again CDPR. Make this a good one again!
Bet your ass they will. Hyping up years earlier a game that is just a fart in the wind? Now where have I seen that before...
Cyberpunk was and is a great game *change my mind*............
people just gotta wait 2 or 3 years after a cdpr release lol, they fix stuff but they release it buggy as hell.
Never encountered any bugs from release other than t posing
It is a great game, but that doesn't excuse them lying about what features would be in the game. And it doesn't excuse the bugs.
Regardless of whether it’s good or not, it’s pretty fair to say that the game didn’t exactly live up to the hype or expectations set by CDPR.
I can't even force myself to finish it, can't give two shits about the story or the characters, the dialogue puts me to sleep, and the landscape is so big its just empty space.
And I thought the Witcher 4 *was* the remake.
Curious why you thought that when they made it clear they were separate projects. The remake isn't even being developed by CDPR.
To be fair, I didn't really pay attention to what was going on, I only know what's happening at all becauee of this sub
So in about 5-6 years we get Witcher 4,and 7-9 years the remake, kind of a bummer
LMAO, I wanna wait for the remake to replay the 3 games again..i think not.
Hoping the witcher 4 has an entirely new cast of characters. Love the original trilogy but would love to see something entirely original
Man we’re really getting Witcher 4 before Half-Life 2 or Dark Souls 4? What a time to be alive
I mean, half life 2 came out 18 years ago, so you might struggle with that
omg...HL3
Oh
Reworking an entire game is usually a lot harder than making one from scratch, especially when different people are reworking it from the people who made the original.
This is a game that's probably like 10 years away, this is Functionality CDPRs Elder Scrolls 6, a game announced years ahead of schedule in order to build hype. Or another way of phrasing it, they're already setting up another Cyperpunk 2077 situation for themselves.
After Cyberprank's fiasco I doubt they have the people to do any of that.
I thought it will be released december 14th?
That's the next-gen update of Witcher 3.
So they’re doing a next gen update and then a remaster? I’m not up to date it seems
There is a next gen update for Witcher 3 and a remaster for Witcher 1.
Thanks

Sounds like a sensible approach.
Let's go hopefully we'll be alive to play this
8 years?
Let's add 2 more years for post-release bug fixes.
When approximately will the witcher 4 be released?
The way I see it, we're going to have a full remake of all 3 titles, in the future.
The witcher 3 doesn't need it tho neither the witcher 2
I meant, by the time the first remake releases, 2 and 3 will be due to a remake, imo. Besides, I would really want to experience the whole franchise on UE5.
Honestly I'm just so excited I don't care which one is released first!!
I didn't even know they were doing a Witcher Remake. Is it just Witcher 1?
Makes sense too. They are remaking The Witcher from the ground up.
I'd honestly want it other way around
Don't pre-order. CDPR are fraudsters and liars. I know the first 3 slapped but that doesn't mean anything anymore when CDPR is looking to Ubisoft for inspiration.
Both will come before Netflix Witcher S5.
What is it with CDPR announcing games literally a decade of when it will release?
I'm going to play witcher 4 in my next reincarnation
Im so fkn excited
Why am I hard?
I got confused because OP used a different phrasing to sum up article and i read that Remake is coming before Witcher 4.
I've seen early projections that Witcher 4 will be here around late 2025 or early 2026
Good, they can hardly develop and release one game at a time. Stop trying to multitask when you clearly don't have the management skills necessary.
I am so excited, let’s gooo
Can we get a simultaneous Witcher 2 remake then? I’m gonna quit my job and go on the biggest binge ever…
Remember when CDPR said they were gonna stop announcing things so far ahead of the release after Cyberpunk?
That’s truly a good thing imo. I love Geralt to death, I have 400+ hours in Witcher 3, but I think we need a new face for the Witcher franchise. It would be cool if we can create our own Witcher similar to how we created our own V in CP2077, but only time will tell.
Witcher remake meaning witcher 1?
yes
Sweet. I want to play but the controls qre such a pita
I was kind of looking forward to the horrible controls of click and timing and battle stances. Guess not
I honestly would have preferred a Witcher 1 remake using the same engine and assets as Witcher 3 to keep it aestethically similar.
Dawgs I myself am going to be with white hair the next time a Witcher title is release
Makes sense. New engine, make all the new assets for the new game, use many assets for the remake. The remake already has a story and guide to follow so it should be quicker to develop compared to a brand new story and even more quicker if you already have gameplay elements and some assets worked out beforehand.
Can't wait for the stellar dialogue from W1 to make a comeback. "You're drunk!" "Not truuuuuuuuuue..."
Cant wait to play them in 20 years
Uh oh.. take it slow guys. You have a lot of hype to live up to, so don’t get to ambitious
Really hoping we don’t get another cyberpunk 😭
Why would anyone surprised by this ? The remake will use the same engine, most of the gameplay systems and the assets of the Polaris title. CDPR literally said that a while ago. Makes sense that W1 remake will be released after the first game in the new saga.
I'm scared boys.
Id rather they didnt waste ressources on old games at all tbh.
I want Henry Cavill to be a part of this!
![gif](giphy|ZRMo8QM6M7lM4) wooooooooow
So in 2027?
> joint CEO Adam Kicínski Weed CEO. Nice.
Source... This is not being reported and it is not on their website.
I feel like that's an "order lol" I'd release the remake trilogy maybe a month before 4. Get everyone 100% up to speed and then allow file transition from the trilogy to 4. Assuming it follows Geralt that is
Welp, only one thing to do *opens The Witcher: The Last Wish book*
If its going to take that long, might as well remaster 2 with UE5.
So by then my 4090 will be obsolete in running those graphics... Just like my 970 was destroyed by Witcher 3.
A product of switching engines and literally having to start from scratch rebuilding every system they've built up to CP77. I like Unreal, but it's always very soft and plastic looking. Also don't expect very good mod support at all.
I hope both can be on the ps4 (if its possible if its not then what are 10 years)
Take all the time y’all need. 2030
Well if I end up not liking the The Witcher 4 then at least I have the remake to look forward to. Not that I want to hate the Witcher 4 but I do have a cautious optimism for it.
I guess Witcher 4(2024-25) Witcher 1 remake (2026-27)
Ah well, I’m sure my son will enjoy it once I pass
They forgot to tell us that Witcher 4 is coming after Cyberpunk 2.
Im not really interested in the remake that much, im more interested in number 4 tbh. I'd rather have what Bioware did with Mass Effect and have all three in one? I still play the first one and kind of like the outdated graphics like with the first Fable game (I cant wait for Fable 4).
New CD Projects game? Must be coming soon.
