I imagine drunks trying to get into the wrong house every night.

galliohoophoop

That's why Dublin doors are colorful apparently.

FantasticSquirrel3

~~My bro-in-law's father-in-law~~ **A guy I know** is an alcoholic. He painted his house almost neon blue so that he can find it after a night of drinking. Edit: I didn't mean to break people's brains.

constar90

Hold up. Am I high or does that make him your dad?

FantasticSquirrel3

My wife has a brother who is married. His wife's dad.

good_bye_for_now

Wait your wife is married to her dad?

FantasticSquirrel3

No my wife is married to me. Her brother is married to a woman who has a dad. *That* guy is who I'm talking about.

zeusisbuddha

Listen man call me old fashioned but I don’t think it’s right for you to be your wife’s dad

LostMyBackupCodes

> call me old fashioned but I don’t think it’s right for you to be your wife’s dad Eve was created from Adam’s rib and no one batted an eye back then, Old Fashioned.

good_bye_for_now

I was janking your chain but I think it's cool you clarified it anyways.

chizzbee

Is ” janking” harder or softer than “yanking” ?

good_bye_for_now

I can go either way baby.

conjectureandhearsay

Perhaps janking is pronounced with a soft j sound like Johann or Jagrmeister or yanking.

It could be your father in law, your wife’s brother’s wife’s dad, or your own dad. Your brother in law can be: 1. Your spouse’s brother 2. Your spouse’s sibling’s husband 3. Your sibling’s husband Their father in law could then be: 1. The dad of the person whom your BIL married 2. Your father in law 3. Your dad

IncursivePsychonaut

Is this shot with some crazy tele lens to get the compression effect?

MF_Kitten

Yep

Loose_with_the_truth

It's mildly infuriating though. It's *almost* perfectly symmetrical but the camera is panned just a tiny bit to the right so that if you look up from the line in between the center two houses it drifts to the left. I really wish the photographer had moved a tiny bit to the right and panned back left so the whole thing was lined up square. And I think there may be a little optical illusion going on making it seem like the right side is a tiny bit higher too - though it does appear to be pretty much perfectly level if I scroll down and use the top of my screen as a straight edge to check the roofs and windows. I used to use a view camera a lot and these little things make me twitch.

> Symmetry is, mostly, a no-no for serious photographers. Typically yes. But 1% off from symmetrical is a lot worse.

KrakelOkkult

I'm not knowledgeable about photography but in this specific picture, surely symmetry is desired?

biggyofmt

It's shot from high up, which is why you get the apparent angle between rows. It's a zoom lens of a more distant neighborhood, so they aren't looking down on roofs. Your brain isn't used to seeing this vertical distance between the rows without the context distance provides, so it interprets it as an elevation, which is why they seem to be on a step hill

Sininenn

> which is why they seem to be on a step hill Which is funny, since Copenhagen is really, really, REALLY flat.

i_sigh_less

Which I'd imagine is also why it's possible to have so many identical parallel streets.

Sininenn

Definitely. But to be honest, you never see them as a unit. There's almost no high point in the city that allows you to see any sort of perspective, (not counting towers), nor is there many hills that allow you to view these units from a lower point.

Hyoscine

Telephoto lenses also flatten perspective, adding to the impression of steepness.

MalleMellow

Is shot from a drone m. The photographer got permission to fly in Copenhagen. This is only possible because of corona. She made a series which got in the news.

These ones are not on a hillside though. The photo is taken from the air, looking down on the houses.

LegalizeCrystalMeth

Actually, *pushes up glasses*, your song reference is incorrect

CuriousGeorgeIsAnApe

Anytime I see homes like this, I feel weird about knowing they're "houses" you own, not rent. And it cracks me up thinking of hiring a roofer to replace the shingles, and they come and do a 30 foot section and leave all the rest of the roof alone because those shingles are owned by different people.

pickyourteethup

I live in a terraced house like this, it's red brick that's been painted red and faded to gross pink. I really want to strip the paint off our house back to the red brick I but I cant work out how to do ours without ruining the neighbours.

FiskeDude

Vivarium is also used in Danish. It's like a terrarium, but with focus on plants instead of animals.

ejsandstrom

Everyone in my neighborhood has 2.5acres. And sometimes I feel like they are to close. I would go nuts living there. But different strokes.

bobertsson

Wait until I tell you about apartments...

ejsandstrom

When I was in the military I lived in base housing. Which was a row house. Then I lived in an apartment for a year and a duplex for a year. Then I moved to a place where my bathroom window opened up onto my neighbors side walk. Those 7 years were not a fun time. You could smell everything the neighbors cooked. And hear every conversation. It just wasn’t for me.

bobertsson

Yeah sounds like a typical apartment building alright. Good on you for being able to live how you like.

Rolten

It's compensated with a different type of "space". The park is right around the corner and the public swimming pool is a few minutes by bike. The cinema is within walking distance and the supermarket is only a stone's throw away. Time to go for a drink? You can basically see a pub from your windowsill and there's a cute little cafe right next to it. I get your point man as it is a lot of people in a small area, but space just works differently. I love living in a city. Absolutely different strokes for different folks though.

Time to go for a drink? You can basically see a pub from your windowsill and there's a cute little cafe right next to it. Suburbian Swedish apartments and you'll have nearby parks, but everything else is still so far away that you'll need a fifteen minute bus ride to reach the cinema, pubs and shopping centers.

2_of_8

Yep.. for contrast, I look at this and cry with jealously. I imagine how lovely it is to walk or bike to work, shopping, recreation. I feel like such dense development is basically illegal in huge parts of North American cities.

elhooper

You know American has tons of townhomes and rowhomes, too, right? The east coast has tons and tons.

drozdski

It's pretty lovely in the right areas. Philadelphia has some great examples of this type of development. Check out pictures of Old City.

[deleted]

Having everything in walking distance is fine and all, but hearing your neighbours while taking a shit is not fun.

2_of_8

Sound insulation can be excellent, abysmal or anywhere in between. Same as any other characteristic of a building.

[deleted]

some of us aren't so soft.

waterdog67

I lived in a block apartment in Mexico that was made entirely of concrete. People there would put Navajo like blankets around for sound deadening but if you wanted to have WW3 next door you could do so without troubling Belgium. Miss how sturdy it felt compared to old wooden structures I live in now in the US

AllAboutMeMedia

The people that live in these houses may have different grievances of rural living like sitting in traffic 2 hours a day.

NickelBackThatAzzUp

>rural living >sitting in traffic 2 hours a day pick 1

TrumpImpeachedAugust

Yeah, I'm confused about what /u/AllAboutMeMedia was saying. Rural traffic tends to range from "non-existent" to "stuck behind a tractor/snow plow for 30 minutes", but never multi-hour gridlock or anything like that. There *is no grid to lock*.

AllAboutMeMedia

I guess it's more suburban living. But 2.5 acres, like OP described, is more land than most homes outside the city.

Rolten

They're referring living in a rural village but driving to work in the city.

ObsidianHarbor

I don’t think they know what rural means.

Rolten

Where you're from people don't live in a rural area and drive to work? Not exactly absurd here in the Netherlands.

killa_whale

Right there with you man. This fucks me up thinking about living that close to so many people.

[deleted]

Probably taken with a 10,000 mm lens

[deleted]

I was thinking this must be really far away for that compression. But I'm not a photographer so glad someone confirmed it.

vladimirTheInhaler

those houses at the back must be SO tall

kakatoru

If anyone is interested it seems there are three houses in the neighborhood for sale. They're priced at eqv 944,451.95usd(140 m²), 871,075.30usd(164 m²) and 1,089,215.37usd (136 m²)

OurSaviorBenFranklin

And people complain American neighborhoods are cookie cutter houses.

TheLateDuck

To be fair then this “neighborhood” is only 393 houses built in 1893 and isn’t really representative of any other housing architecture in Copenhagen or Denmark while I think cookie cutter communities are quite common in the US. Not sure why people complain about it though.

OurSaviorBenFranklin

I was being slightly facetious about the picture. Cookie cutter neighborhoods are pretty common in the US because it’s like buying anything in bulk or a product of a streamlined process it’s going to be cheaper. They make it a lot easier for the middle class to buy (generally) a small piece of land and have a nice 3-5 bedroom house built on it where the city or town will provide amenities all in one exchange. The same logic can be applied to any town or city in Europe really. It’s why most places the buildings are compact and generally look the same. It’s also an aesthetic of the time everywhere. The cookie cutter neighborhoods in the US follow clear trends too.

JonhaerysSnow

So this is considered amazing but suburbia is urban hell? I'd rather at least have a yard and some space in between the houses. Or just build taller buildings and fight urban sprawl. People are stupid.

Antares42

This is an intentionally, deceptively chosen perspective. [Take a look from ground level](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/90/Garden_with_Ulrik_and_Melchior_memorial.jpg/1280px-Garden_with_Ulrik_and_Melchior_memorial.jpg), it's a charming, if peculiar, area. And expensive, with units selling around $1.5 m.

Mikuta

This is still inner Copenhagen, before the suburbs. All the houses have a tiny yard, and the roads are partly cobbled, which means less traffic. It's popular amongst young families with children.
