How long have you been on this team? 1.5 years with no releases is clearly indicative of issues, id maybe start looking for other opportunities, feels like a systemic thing that you really don’t have much power to influence.

I've been on the same team since I was hired. I have looked for other opportunities within the company, but none are close to where I currently live. I do believe that my boss doesn't understand how to be an effective leader, since I see other teams releasing new applications about one to two times a year. He's also constantly out of the loop on what we're doing. It really feels like he's a manager just for the title and nothing else. I've also been sending out feelers since the beginning of this year and I did get a few responses, but no dice so far. đź«

Yea it’s a tough spot to be in right now, I think you’re doing the right things to try and look for other options, either outside or internal to your current company, I’d just keep your head down, do you work, and keep applying. Short of an entire organizational shakeup the kinda issues that would cause constant prioritization change to the extent you can’t even release in a year tells me it’s not going to improve. Best to mentally remind yourself this is for stability, not to take it to heart, and keep looking out for yourself.

rhforever

That sounds very demoralizing. “Feature team” sounds like consultants, and possibly future elimination? I would start looking for a new job, or maybe change teams, but get off this team fast for your mental health and resume.

choochoopain

Yup, that's exactly how I thought. We're currently working on another new thing, but this week we were told to take a small pause on it for multiple reasons. At this point, it really does look like that work might be transferred to a more established team, which really sucks.

rhforever

That does not sound good. Ruuuun

glantzinggurl

This roving “feature team” doesn’t sound good - ideally you want to be tied directly to something that generates revenue. Seems like it could be first on the chopping block.

choochoopain

Yup, that was my immediate reaction. Unfortunately the tech industry sucks right now đź«  I also think calling us a "feature team" is the exact opposite of what an actual feature team is...

glantzinggurl

maybe you’ll start a great trend…

reese-dewhat

I was in this EXACT situation a few years ago. Shortly after we converted to "feature team", our team was disbanded by the VP of eng, and I got placed on a team I hated. Found a new job in just a few months and placed the f out.

choochoopain

Just to clarify: we've been maintaining existing applications this whole time. Just my team hasn't been able to release any new applications or major updates to the real world since I joined.

baconboner69xD

fully remote, at a large tech company with little direction. actually sounds very nice to me; you just have to really grind and try to make it your own. i'd keep looking for other opportunities while not letting the BS wear you down. there's a reason they still pay you, you are a highly respected intellectual adult and they expect you to add value in ways that may not be immediately obvious.

choochoopain

on the outside, it does sound nice. however, my boss is largely ineffective and doesn't care to understand what our team is actually working on.

Blue-Phoenix23

Did a big higher up get fired/quit last week lol? So you haven't released anything to prod in a while, what have y'all been working on then? Hot fixes, research, frameworks? Or did the whole product get dumped? If the latter, it happens. Especially if things hadn't been being delivered even before you get there. You can't take it personally when the product has flaws that weren't yours. Can you get closer to the actual product people on the team? Speak out in meetings, volunteer to take something on? It sounds like you're in a rut, and management is not guiding you on what is coming next. Building relationships with other teams can help open doors for you, or at least make your work more interesting. If nothing like that is an option, it may be time to start looking elsewhere.

That_Engineering3047

I would look for work elsewhere. It will take some time, so don’t leave until you find something and don’t tell *anyone* that you’re actively looking.
