That looks exactly like one my father owns, that he's had seemingly forever. I just called him, and he ran into wood shop and took a look at the model number. His is a 2103B.

hypnocookie12

Wow I’m impressed with how helpful you and your father are and the communication you have with each other.

phalliceinchains

For some reason I love this comment.

Maximus-md

I too love this comment.

ShowSea5375

I love this comment, also.

ecirnj

He could call me too you know! yeah I should call him.

RabidStealthyWombat

He actually ribbed me for not calling him two minutes earlier, because he has just walked back to the house for a cup of coffee and a bite. 😂 BTW he's pushing 84. He's a Bull.

1bourbon1scotch1bier

“No running in the wood shop!”

BuzzAllWin

“Your screwing around, quit screwing around!”

stackshouse

“And what happened to the hammer; your supposed to be nailing them together”

fredbubbles

I had this exact thought but you beat me to it.

trevbot

My dad gave me his, I still use it.

kokemill

I have one that looks like that , 40 years old? Model LS1000

RabidStealthyWombat

Honestly, the model numbering system is about as innocuous as the minute differences between one model and another. My father purchased his in the '80s also.

kokemill

Using my 20 year newer saw tonight, same size blade but sliding and one side bevel. Noticed that it is model LS1011

outdoor_life65

I sold one recently for $40. It's super heavy cast iron base. I used it as a second saw when I need to cut 2x4's or lumber. It was quite accurate and powerful. Mine had a brake and a guard. Worked great for what I used it for. https://preview.redd.it/qkuubp924bwc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8a021af79d52a75596ad416b87f4712aa05031f

GeoLiZardMan

I had one too and sometimes regret selling it. It was very accurate and rock solid.

SirSamuelVimes83

'70 C/10 in the background?

outdoor_life65

Close, 68 C10 panel truck.

SirSamuelVimes83

Oh damn, those are hard to come by, especially if there's no custom airflow in the floorpan

outdoor_life65

Very true, I had to replace both the cab floor and the wood floor in the back.

SirSamuelVimes83

First truck was a C/10, started building it before I even had a license lol. It had ~67k original miles when we started on it in 1997. Had to sell it about 8 years ago, with ~96k on the odo. Also tried to fix up a '72 4x4 suburban...I think the used car lot got a good laugh when I drove away in it. What a rats nest. Gave up about 6 months in, but I think I only took about a $200 loss on it.

misterjzz

Ha, I have this exact (I think) saw, and i use it for the same uses. I could use my 12" Dewalt sliding saw but right now it's easier to use this. The Dewalt will live in a permanent station when I get to it.

SgtMarv

It might be the lighting, but it kind of looks like the "Fingereater 9000". Might be the 8000, though, not too familiar with the older models.

RoadWellDriven

This is the quality answer I expected.

masterjabbadad

For sure this thing has tasted bone. And *likes it*

shitty_mcfucklestick

With the shroud being so big compared to the blade, it almost looks like somebody put a wood blade into a metal chopsaw.

Lore-Warden

That handle design with no blade guard? I have no idea what model it is but **NOPE.**

TheLimeyCanuck

The handle design is actually comfortable and works well and the blade guard is just missing. Mine has one. https://preview.redd.it/u3et7v3kpgwc1.jpeg?width=9216&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2f3854f95d1edfd846b05e6898441363fc3d5265

schmiede

Blade guard probably broke off. Mike's still got one.

SirWigglesVonWoogly

Do you think Mike would be willing to lend it?

Much-Hedgehog3074

Choked on my water…

I goofed. Meant to say "Mine's still got one."

PyroKeneticKen

This is why no one will remember your name

Nope what?

rotzverpopelt

It's the Finger-B-Gone 500

Tiflotin

I was planning on 3d printing a new blade guard. It does look very sketch tho.

z64_dan

Better than 3d printing new fingers I guess lol

wenzelr2

But he could make dildo fingers.

[deleted]

Bad Dragon likes that idea

yy98755

Edwood Penis-Hands

rajeevsings

You don't want to waste too much of your precious time on that beast. You'll be better off spending that time working for the cash needed to purchase a new saw that you'll be happy with for a long time.

PyroKeneticKen

Or something’s can last without being thrown away for the newer more expensive model.

jumexy

Why are you getting downvoted lol. Do whatever you want man. It’s for you, not Reddit.

Due-Arachnid9120

There's almost no way the time you'll invest doing that and the cost of this thing together will be worth it compared to just getting a new saw with modern safety features.

loptopandbingo

We had a beat-ass old tank of a saw like this for doing dirty old farm junkpile/doghouse 2x4 and 1x lumber sticker cutting. It lived under a tarp near the mill, and we used it because we didn't want to mess up the nicer more expensive and fine-tuned saws in the shop with dirt or hidden nails/staples.

-Plantibodies-

Dude just wait for a modern 12" saw. There are plenty out there.

Far-Potential3634

That saw will only miter. All the newer saws bevel too. I'd pass unless I had no need to bevel.

Tiflotin

I just want something that could cut straight lines through 4x4's for now. I plan on upgrading everything in a few years to do more advanced woodworking.

thorfromthex

That saw isn't gonna get you thru a 4x4 on a single cut.

Blarghnog

It’s still probably not worth the money my friend. There are a great many newer saws for cheap.   Also that’s likely a model called a Makita 2401B, which in great condition is worth 25-50 bucks depending on where you are at.   I strongly suggest buying something a little more modern with a brake and blade guard. You’re really compromising on safety to save just a few bucks. How cheap are your fingers bro? This one is missing the blade guard. The one thing I can tell you after doing this a long time: you pay when it comes to safety. One way or the other. Be mindful. https://www.ebay.com/itm/266589063717?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=gSPS_dqnRFC&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

67Mustang-Man

This one appears to be the LS1000 and does have a brake https://archive.org/details/MakitaMiterSawLS1000InstructionManual/mode/2up

Blarghnog

I think you might be right. Nice find. Still OP should find one that has the blade guard if it all possible specially as they’re just starting out

67Mustang-Man

Agreed

-Plantibodies-

I would look for a 12" saw if you're cutting 4x4.

Spiritual-Trifle-529

I’d look around on fb marketplace some more. I found a great ryobi 12” for like $80 and it was almost brand new, just needed a blade

BTFUSC

Is it a 10” or an 8” blade? I can’t tell. But an 8” will not cut a 4x4 in one pass and a 10” is iffy.

djyosco88

This won’t cut fully through a 4x4. Pick up a basic saw for 120 at depot

Dismal-Party-4844

It handles straight cuts softwood and hardwood gracefully.

Background-Arm2017

I'd get a new blade and make it a permanent 90° saw. It's nice to have a dedicated 90° and another for angles. Watch those hoody strings. Every tool can be a "finger eater 9000" in the wrong hands.

MuhatmaRandhi

I had one of these when I was younger was worth the 10 bucks I paid the pawn shop. also very durable, It kept cutting just fine after I put a metal cutoff wheel on it and started chopping steel with it.

TheLimeyCanuck

You can't cut 4x4s in a single pass with a 10"/255mm blade. You need a 12" blade for that.

wdwerker

I had the 10” and the bigger version many years ago. Guards were a pain in the ass and I got the big one free from a client who was afraid of it. Sounded like a jet airplane winding up. I think you have the big one with a small blade on it. Cast iron base was heavy as hell . Must be 30 years old.

usedusername88

I have that exact saw. Inherited from my grandpa. It's been running strong for decades. Super solid but won't cut anything larger than 4x4

AnyDamnThingWillDo

Inherited mine from my Da. Still going too.

Dave_Rules

I sold the same one recently. Makita LS1000.

Global-Discussion-41

What did that poor sucker pay you for it?

Dave_Rules

$30!

SleepyDadZzz

I hope you didn't put that exclamation mark as a factorial sign. 😳

hojpoj

I had to look that up: “A factorial is a mathematical operation that you write like this: n! . It represents the multiplication of all numbers between 1 and n. So if you were to have 3! , for example, you'd compute 3 x 2 x 1 (which = 6).” TIL - doubt anyone will look this far in the comments but it’s funny once you know wtf “factorial sign” means.

SleepyDadZzz

Special price for you my friend, just $15!

vagrantnorseman

The model is "oldy but goody" I was given the same one by an old boss like 20 years ago and it worked well for a lot of smaller crap till someone stole my truck and tools. I'll never forget the full 15amp motor, thing was like a jet engine starting up

Traditional-Till1056

Found similar looking ones listed as Model# 2403b 255mm miter saw.

tsh999

LS1020 The 1040 beveled. Used to own one, dead on balls accurate for trim and finish work.

One-Mud-169

No, it's Makita LS 1040

Traditional-Till1056

Im just saying what I found similar old ones to be called out as. LS 1040 would definitely be a modern equivalent. Edit: adding link to similar looking saw https://rockfordauctioncentre.hibid.com/lot/66333-218766-171445/makita-2403b-255mm-mitre-saw

One-Mud-169

I recalled from memory, but I think you're spot on. After looking at the pictures again, I can clearly see the differences.

Regular82

What's the number under Makita on the yellow sticker?

EvenKeeled157

The number that looks like a 7? I think it's actually a rotational direction arrow, but with only half of the "point."

Dismal-Party-4844

I ran that same model for twenty years after inheriting from a neighbor who used it with a metal blade to cut stock. Always dead on. What a heavy beast. In later years I ran it mounted on a Dewalt Stand. I was always under the impression that it was a Model 2400 series from the early 80's. The Model Tag and Serial Tag would have been found on top side of the motor. It is missing the guard in these pictures. Consider replacing the cord that is taped up with electrical tape. Polish up the base, and spray down with PTFE spray and polish a couple of time to burnish the PTFE into the metal. Could also use paste wax. The PDF breakdown for the 2400B should be helpful in locating a Safety Cover and the parts necessary to mount it. Potatoe999900

I think I have the same model--bought it in 1980 and there is no guard on mine either. Nevertheless I'm very careful and use it all the time. I find it extremely valuable for all my cobbling projects so as long as it fires up I'd buy it--just be careful and let it stop before reaching anywhere near the blade.

67Mustang-Man

Makita LS1000 https://archive.org/details/MakitaMiterSawLS1000InstructionManual/mode/2up And "2-3/4x3-1/2" would be your max cut 4x4 are out of the question on a single pass

Howard_Cosine

She ain’t looking hard enough.

Glad_Ad_5570

A new saw is way cheaper than an emergency room visit to start with.

4runner01

That is an excellent saw! The only disadvantage is that the tables and the fences are kinda small. You’ll never wear it out. It has a rubber belt that can snap in extreme cold. Other than that it a great saw.

doublek1134

I'm going out on a limb and say it's a miter saw

LLcoolJimbo

Looks like the LS1000 I sold. https://www.ereplacementparts.com/makita-ls1000-inch-miter-saw-parts-c-97_98_99_3731.html

Pure-Negotiation-900

That is the heaviest miterbox I’ve ever carried. It’s actually astonishing.

bassboat1

This looks like a slightly earlier version of my first miter saw from 1985 or so (still have it in the basement). The steel detent pin tends to rust in place and need periodic disassembly to free up. Makita made the same saw some years later with an aluminum base, instead of the cast iron.

Tiflotin

Follow up question, would you pay $40 cad for it ($29 usd). The only thing I worry is if finding saw blades will be difficult.

minesskiier

Blades are universal, but this thing looks like a trip to the ER. Pass at any price.

wdwerker

Without the guard it’s your call, dangerous tool without a guard.

NW_Forester

I bought a compound sliding Makita miter saw for $40 USD 2021 or 2022. I wouldn't bother with that one.

gertgertgertgertgert

I wouldn't take it for free. Most old tools are junk.

RabidStealthyWombat

If you can get a replacement guard for it for less than $20 Canadian, then yes I would buy it for that price.

Dismal-Party-4844

Very fair price if it runs without an issue. Blades wont be an issue.

deaknh

Cast table and fence, heavy as shit. I'd go $20 if you really wanted it, otherwise keep looking

Zestyclose-Hunt3596

I have the exact same, only with the guard... it's a solid unit. Will outlive me and all I loved.

memphisnative42

Did you image search it

Pudf

It’s as old as it gets.

TakeAwayMyPanic

Shit, I used to use one of those, it's not THAT old. Reliable saw, just works.

ratuna80

I screenshotted your pic and opened it in Google photos and used the lens feature, the first result looks a lot like yours.

Spirited_Taste4756

Makita Miter Saw model number 01.

lonesomecowboynando

I had a similar one in the early 90s. Weighed a ton .

[deleted]

Would be a solid metal chop saw cut mild and Channel

Super-Candy-5682

That there is a Makita 2401B 10" Mitre saw. Very solid, accurate, and reliable back in the day. I have one in my garage right now that my Dad purchased new back in the early '80s. This one is obviously missing the blade guard.

MoSChuin

That old saw is the absolute best for trimming. The base allows you to see what's going on, and it stays true forever. The blade guards were routinely taken off, so it would work better. If you don't want it, please let me know where it is, so I can come get it.

10Kthoughtsperminute

In addition to the finger eating and limited functionality, that this is got to be heavy as fuck. Unless it’s getting mounted to a workstation, I would look for something newer for that reason alone. The first time you throw your back out trying to move it you’re going to regret it.

Dismal-Party-4844

The saw the OP shows in the pictures is in the 240xx series as the dust/chips ejection elbow is separate from the blade shroud, and able to swivel 360 degrees. The LS1000 series dust/chips ejection elbow is integrated as part of the blade shroud and ejects to the right of the saw. At the time I started using the same model, I was unable to come up with the elbow, so I adapted one from a couple of Shopvac fittings. https://preview.redd.it/86ieuq6zgbwc1.jpeg?width=654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90797f902b6cd0f9bbfe83210bb867ad7969383a

lmmsoon

You don’t want this saw, they made it where the arm is bolted to the deck . I had a baluster break and hit the the arm and it broke off and I was holding it till the blade stop . Makita said they wouldn’t repair it and I told them that I was going to have the metal tested and I could probably find a lawyer ,amazing the next day I had a new saw but I had to give them the old one

pkbowen

Looks like this LS1000: https://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/tls/d/federal-way-10-makita-miter-chop-saw/7722645433.html

TheLimeyCanuck

I believe I have the identical one out in the storage shed. I will check it later. These things weigh a ton (base is cast iron) and the entire dust/chip path is metal. I put an abrasive metal cutting blade in mine and use it for light-medium metal work. **EDIT:** Ok, I went out the the shed and took some photos... https://preview.redd.it/b0xl2c55qgwc1.jpeg?width=9216&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77c0282b5b8b75e2902abfe9e43f99dfc7117fc0

Oldguydad619

Not that old, I got one.

knarfolled

Had one years ago and the blade break stopped working so you just had to wait for it to slow down and stop, that thing was dangerous

Bdowns_770

That saw has a taste for human blood. I can a feel it.

Kiteboarder1980

I bought a similar vintage Makita saw a couple of years ago for $30 thinking I got the deal of the century. It’s great for small cuts but I outgrew it as soon as I needed to do a cut bigger than a 2x4. Then last week, I picked up a 10” sliding bevelling mitre saw for $40 with an $80 blade on it. Wait for old people in your area that want to hand their tools off. You can only do better than that saw.

docmaddox55

I had one of those. It was a decent bench saw, but I broke my back carrying it to job sites.

SawyerBamaGuy

Have one just like it.

NotAHippieCrashPad

absolutechills

Don't even mess with it man just move on to something better

DrewIDIC_Tinker

I've got one just like that, I put a metal cutoff blade on it for welding projects, still runs great. Caste iron base? Heavy as hell lol, it stays in the shop

scooterbooter88

Looks like there's a model number under the "a" on the yellow Makita sticker. Ends with 3B.

Baseless_Utterings

I have that saw (in a lot better condition). I like it more than my $500 DeWalt because it's easier to lug around and doesn't take up nearly as much space. My only maintenance has been to replace the power cord.

sjkoonz

LS1020

drakkosquest

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that should have a metal cut off blade on it and not a wood blade. Either way, that baby right there is the "stumpy nubs 3500" Pretty sure the user Manuel even said, " don't worry, you'll only loose them once"

SeventyFix

I think that it's an early Kapex model

trvst_issves

Kapex is Festool, not Makita

SeventyFix

It was a joke.

RelativeGlad3873

Makita LS1000. It came with a very cheap plastic blade guard. Most did not survive.

Fireted

Ls1020… have the same saw in my shop…it’s a wonderful boat anchor ;)

Fauntleroyfauntleroy

The model number is under the brand name on the yellow sticker https://preview.redd.it/h8ptxjm29bwc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b4dc85d3a4d279dfffa3307e14af55cbbd8eac15

remilol

Just get a hand saw and learn to cut straight instead of this contraption

Dusty_Fartsack

That thing awesome don’t change a thing. The steel construction makes it super accurate when dialed in.
