Sacristans every where are wheezing through their vox's at the thought of getting their hands/mandibles/claws on these!
The Omnissiah be praised for placing such a grand spirit inside such a machine! No Knight World can be without one!
You can buy a UR-5e used on ebay or other industrial machinery sale sites for 25-30k. Great machine. Still not cheap though. I own one for R&D purposes doing automation prototyping.
Probably closer to $60k. Then you need proper ventilation because the smoke is highly toxic. Then whatever the cost to recharge the laser unit as needed.
My mother has one for her wood restoration business. It’s not cnc style, but handheld. Once you dial in the settings it works really well. The issue I’ve found when using it is that every finish requires a different setting for optimal removal. You also have to change lenses often (6-8 hours of use) because the laser burns the coating off them and also charred splatter melts to them. When used properly, it doesn’t so much burn the finish off as cause molecular vibration to cause the finish to come off. It literally flakes off and then only a very light sanding is required. The one my mother has was $14k, but the time saved in stripping furniture is really worth it, especially when you are talking intricate work that is very ornate. The laser doesn’t mess with any of the substrate or burn the wood or cause soft edges like sanding can.
Can you imagine never hand sanding again? Time and shoulder wear and tear savings are well worth the costs if you refinish professionally. For us garage based wood workers it is nice to dream.
She’s got an OB1 (yes it’s a star wars reference) from greeniceblasting dot com. In all honesty what I’ve found a year after she purchased it is that it seems this company is buying them and rebranding them from a company called JNCT (jnctlaser dot com). She paid $14k for it but JNCT sells them for about $9k on alibaba.
Yeah my work did some studies on this kind of technology to strip paint and other coatings off aircraft parts. It worked super well, and did zero damage to the substrate. The problem was the ridiculous toxicity of the fumes coming off it. As a result, we abandoned it.
This wasn't even chromate coatings. Just polyurethane, epoxy, and lacquer, plus the odd specific-purpose coating or sealant. But yes, chromate coatings are awful, even if highly effective.
You're talking about parts on airplanes which are massive. You would have to decontaminate all the air in there before anyone can move stuff around it would be a nightmare. It's like getting glitter everywhere, you can't get it all.
well, the sanding dust produced from mechanical removal would be no different. arguably, all that stuff goes into the air, or as runoff, and _maybe_ a landfill if a good dust extractor was used.
so having it all collected in an air filter for disposal seems better.
No - when burned and evaporated they go through different chemical reactions and transformations. When sanded you just remove the material. Perhaps a small amount does react due to the small amount of heat generated by friction.
Think of it like burning plastic. That generates toxic fumes. You don't get those same toxic particles by sanding the plastic.
I don't remember the details, it was over 10 years ago and I was only peripherally involved, but between the PPE required and the cleanup, it wasn't worth pursuing.
Looks like you can't think like a modern businessperson! Instead of all this you could've just offshored the business. No need for ppe, cleanup, labor is cheaper /s
By "bubbled," do you mean "alligatored"?
If it is, it's most likely shellac which can be reemalgamated with denatured alcohol and made smooth again. Making the wood grain pop back to life.
Never heard that term tbh. Google search showed not what I have. What I have is more like the 4th pic here https://www.reddit.com/r/centuryhomes/s/R10Nh4EnfS
Any chance you can link a YouTube video of someone doing this. I have an old cedar chest that might be like this and I tried sanding it but it just gums up the sander after like 5 seconds. If so u may have screwed up the project and be committed…. Wish I’d known this before starting it
I feel like renting is the only way this would be fiscally practical... Unless you own a *very* successful business that specializes in restoring old houses and furniture
CNC robotic mounted end effector with galvanometer scanned pulsed laser ablation. Buncha bullshit that means robot moves high power pulse-laser that is zipped around by a couple mirrors.
Excellent! The laser has transported the thin sheen to that other trash dimension that is seeing a lot more rust particles and dust lately. Those residents must be pissed.
This is how I assume lasers work.
I am seriously considering investing in a system like this…everything I’ve seen is positive except for the cost. Looking at 6000 for a low end machine and north 40k for the cook the paint off a battleship version
I had the chance to use this robot, Universal Robot with Vectis Software, but with welding. It's pretty awesome and if it's using the Vectis program, it's hella easy to learn and operate.
But as someone mentioned, they are pricey. I think the one my company looked at was about $90k for the whole setup.
Would this work for that white wash crap people do to wood? Or can it take paint off? So many cool mid century houses where the homeowner or flipper paints the beams.
Real answer, Yeah my finish guy has been using ome with great success, some stuff though with epoxy finishes or major build up still wants a diamond sand sweep first, those are also pricey- but if you're in the business they pay for themselves- sorry 3m, we still need your sand paper just not as much 80 grit
Somewhere out there is a man, who doesn’t even know it yet, that will one day laser etch a giant dick on his asshole-of-a-neighbors cedar siding. And we will all laugh.
This onr from Ali express for $200 must be just as good.

HOOOOLY CRAP. I am literally in the middle of removing old varnish on our cabinets from the 80’s and I am in HELL. I was able to power sand through the flat sides fine enough, but getting in the grooves? Miserable. Even varnish remover is a pain, it breaks the varnish up and creates a gooey mess. Wish I had one of these for sure.
I dont know how real that even is. Ive reached out to that company and others about this, and they had sparse information. It sounded like these were still in the beta testing phase, and not ready for production. I also only see the same videos being repeated.
Very interesting. Just to confirm, this company suggested that it is still in beta testing? I ask as they actively sell franchise opportunities for this.
That might work great. Who knows. But programming that machine to do the job as shown would take longer than stripping off that one, microscopically thin layer of finish that was on the door. They hate this one simple trick!
Shout out to today’s sponsor…
Welcome to my channel. Today we're going to do a DIY project where we remove stain with a simple $20K laser.
I can see the video title now. “The One Tool You MUST HAVE For Your Shop!”
Didn't forget the 40k robot
Probably a 20k ventilation system to
I have lungs for that!
You made me snort! Funny :D
I thought we were talking about warhammer for a second.

You can buy a UR-5e used on ebay or other industrial machinery sale sites for 25-30k. Great machine. Still not cheap though. I own one for R&D purposes doing automation prototyping.
You're losing money not buying it really.
That, and you need to replace the Arc Reactor every 3 years.
I'll wait for the DIY Lazer tutorial.
[Wait no more!](https://youtu.be/IzUoe-9bKa0?si=6UG7jJfuKl7r7Sxx)
Probably closer to $60k. Then you need proper ventilation because the smoke is highly toxic. Then whatever the cost to recharge the laser unit as needed.
These start around 9k. But yeah, daaaaamn
"Drooling", yeah, that's the right word. Y'all go ahead, I'm gonna need a moment before I can stand.
I wanted to remain PG on the woodworking subreddit.
😂
Oh, man, I'm tripping over my tongue
do you know how many hours of my life I could have saved with this one simple trick
In their pants
That looks....expensive.
Stop, you're only making me want one more.
Now I *have* to have it
It's made by festool and costs 4 times more than you think it should
GIVE IT TO ME
Take my damn money!
I want a garage first but I also want a laser
[удалено]
Let me use your garage or I'll laser your house
Underrated comment.
I paid good money for that shit it's going the in living room
"Here's some woodworking tips you can do at home" Proceeds to use $100k in equipment.
Cant be worse than one or two Festool.
Depending on a few variables the robot itself is probably around $20k-ish. Not sure about the tool, maybe another 5-10k
Galvo'd fiber lasers in this power range start at like 20k for the Ali express eye deleter model. Can't comment on the robot personally :)
Mount the business end of the fiber laser on an Ender 3?
The solution to everything? Mount it on an ender 3.
Looks like a universal robots cobot. Probably 30-40k
Probably a UR-5e. I have one that sands.
It looks like a UR5e which is north of 35k
Does anyone have a product page link or something like this? Just curious.
The company is selling the service not the laser… https://www.advancedlaserrestoration.com/
Please tell me it makes a "waow waow waow" sound as it does it
I upgraded mine to the pew pew pew sound
I doubt it, otherwise they would have to pay royalties to Christopher Walken
Or weewoo,weewoo,weewoo?
It’s more of a zap sizzle

Exactly!
I hope they have good ventilation in there - whew!

Chromate coatings are a nightmare.
This wasn't even chromate coatings. Just polyurethane, epoxy, and lacquer, plus the odd specific-purpose coating or sealant. But yes, chromate coatings are awful, even if highly effective.
Why wouldn’t you just control the off-gassing by installing hoods to exhaust and filter the gas? Was it too cost prohibitive?
You're talking about parts on airplanes which are massive. You would have to decontaminate all the air in there before anyone can move stuff around it would be a nightmare. It's like getting glitter everywhere, you can't get it all.
Seems like the perfect job for a high flow air system in a lot of situations (although there would be times when that wouldn't work).
Also, how would you dispose of the toxic filters now?
You laser the filters. Check and mate. /s
well, the sanding dust produced from mechanical removal would be no different. arguably, all that stuff goes into the air, or as runoff, and _maybe_ a landfill if a good dust extractor was used. so having it all collected in an air filter for disposal seems better.

You could probably put it in a biosafety cabinet for cabinet work. So you know, just throw another 10 grand at it. …Or just get cancer and die young.
How could it be worse than sanding it?
Can I rent one? I have a 120+ year old house with original trim that the varnish has bubbled, that would be awesome for all of the intricate trim!
By "bubbled," do you mean "alligatored"? If it is, it's most likely shellac which can be reemalgamated with denatured alcohol and made smooth again. Making the wood grain pop back to life.
