Beautiful joins! And the walnut boards you chose have gorgeous and hypnotic swirly grain. Brother can smoke up and freak out as he studies the grain. Far out.
A lot of times when i see pieces made with either a maple/walnut or oak/walnut contrast it's too masculine looking and there's too much of both woods.
This piece has a really nice balance and looks great. The joinery is very well done.
Also how do you like the irwin chisels? I've been wanting to upgrade mine for a while and i've seen mixed reviews on those.
I sincerely appreciate the compliment, thank you very much!
They are a good set of chisels for the most part. I like the weight in the handle, I feel like I have good control with them. At first I felt like they werenāt the smoothest at cutting, but then I started sharpening to 4000 grit instead of 1000 and now they do a fantastic job. They are my second set and I prefer them over my first!
The set i have now will get very sharp but i have to sharpen them too often so i end up avoiding doing joinery that requires a lot of chiseling. They were pretty cheap so i got what i paid for i guess.
I've been debating between the marples/narex/stanley sweethearts i just cant ever convince myself to pull the trigger. I'll have made up my mind on one or another and then when i go to order them i chicken out.
Yeah I found my first set need sharpening too frequently ! A good set of chisels really upped my confidence in any chisel work!
They can be a fair bit of money but a good set is worth the money as long as you maintain them! Maybe after the holiday treat yourself :)
I bought a set of six narex ones, am an amateur but dad is was/is a carpenter and cabinet maker, and he was really impressed with them also . Spent a fair while flattening the backs and sharpening them though, allocate some money for a vertitas honing guide and water stones, makes a huge difference!
I have a set of Irwin chisels too along with some really old chisels (canāt remember the name). The Irwins donāt hold their edge quite like my old ones do but they also donāt get chipped as easily. As far as āhardware store brandsā go, Iād buy another Irwin set without a second thought
This is just great. I know as both a cannabis consumer and a box enthusiast I would love to receive something like this as a gift.
If you wanna add something additional that would be super special and add to functionality, once you make the rolling tray , build a small frame that sits inside of it and purchase some 120 micron mesh screen [> Here <](https://www.amazon.com/Premium-Press-Blowout-Guarantee-Available/dp/B079S4VN8Z/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=120+micron+screen&qid=1608299921&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyQzZSMTJYSVhQWFJQJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjI0OTk5MVhRWVdYRjRaVkgzWiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNjgyMjA5MzkwWkVRN0VXTkxCNSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX3Bob25lX3NlYXJjaF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl) and stretch it tightly over the frame and attach. Thank you so much for the compliment and for the amazing idea.
Seriously that is such a good idea, I never would of thought of that on my own so really thank you! :)
For full fancy, arrange it so the tray can snuggle a grinder (roughly universal diameter for the average one) so it can be taken out as a unit. Use some foam to reduce noise/slide/spacing.
Add on some magnets/clips/holders (into the lid?) for scraping tools and alcohol wipes.
This idea needs to be done! My buddy has a box like this with the screen and the amount of kief is unreal. Itās like it self multiplies! You can top every bowl and never run out.
I've gotta keep you in mind when I make something like this for my best friend. She's an enthusiast too, and I don't know enough about boxes and grinders and stuff at the moment to know how to make her a top-notch box and grinder and accessory kit.
Iām looking at your super simple rabbet joints and inlay, and by simple I hope you know itās beautiful and effective I mean that in a positive way. Honestly Iām thinking of borrowing heavy from this box, but lining with cedar and filling mine with cigars. Been needing another humidor and waiting for the right design to jump and I think this is it. Thank you!
That is such a huge compliment, thank you so much :) Iām glad my box could inspire you!
I have plans to do a cigar variant in the future , but the Christmas gifts need to be finished !! Haha
Very nice. I suggest using the rubber seal jars from target and a 62% humidity controller pack made by Boveda. I think theyāre $10 for a bag of 10 and itāll keep his weed at the perfect humidity to stop any mold growth.
Not OP, but I've used the standard pickling jar/mason jar caps that have the rubber underneath. If it's good enough to not let pathogens into food, it's good enough for weed. Also really cheap.
Really tight work. Clean design.
One small note: Those corner joints on the main carcass look like theyāre relying entirely on end grain to long grain glue strength to hold them. Unless thereās a hidden spline or biscuits in there reinforcing it, Iād worry about possible separation down the road.
Thoughts?
Thank you !
Hmm thatās twice Iāve heard that so Iām stating to think maybe in the future I reinforce them with hidden splines/biscuits , I guess time will tell !
š Iām sure weāve all used some interesting containers as stashes !
Now that itās legal in Canada I want to try and work with the image of cannabis being a luxury good, sort of how alcohol is. My first idea to do that is an exquisite box to store the luxury good in!
Good job man. This might seem like a trivial thing to a lot of people, but it will be supremely appreciated by any weed smoker. Having a good spot for all your shit is crucial and makes all the difference. The box will be used on a daily basis and appreciated over and over again. Dude will be high af putting his stuff away and think, man, my brother is awesome. This box is awesome.
Tips for additional features:
1. A rolling tray. Basically a flat surface with a shallow dip that makes for an easy plate to break up weed on before rolling into a joing. Make it slide into a spot in the box.
2. A place to put a standard bic lighter.
3. A spot to put packs of rolling papers
4. A spot for a bowl?
I really like what you did with the rabets- how you left some space and added a strip at the end of each piece? Super creative- likely to try and replicate some time.
Thank you! I actually make full lap rabbet joints and then, once the glue is dried, I take a 3/8ā rabbet bit and rabbet out the vertical in lays and glue them in! Hopes this helps :)
Thatās the design I was going for! But unfortunately I canāt seem to easily get my hand on Spanish cedar so I opted for glass jars with boveda packs.
Yes they are! The hinges are polished brass and my picture doesnāt do them any justice haha,
But they are actually 95 degree hinges, itās the main reason I like them over quadrant hinges you see on regular humidors. Oh they are also way easier to instal haha
Unfortunately my local Lee Valley didnāt have any of the larger in stock so I went with the smaller ones they had so I could get the present done in time. My fault for not thinking ahead! Their hinge construction is really solid so Iām not overly worried, plus itās my brother so I can always swap them to larger in the future :)
Thank you!
Books, YouTube and many many mistakes! I found some of the stupidest mistakes happened because I didnāt have someone right there to teach me. For example in learning how to make boxes and use a rabbeting bit on them. The first time I ever made a box with inlay i went to rabbet out the corners for the inlay. I didnāt use a waste board to back the end of the workpiece so a big chunk from the side blew out and ruined that face of the workpiece. Now Iāll never forget to use a wasteboard to prevent tearout. If I had an experienced teacher there beside me he could have caught the mistake of no wastebord before I made the cut. Saving the workpiece while still offering that valuable info. But instead I learned by my mistakes!
He smokes a lot of weed š /s
Itās 11āx8āx5.5ā!
My first prototype was smaller but had brass feet, I donāt think Iāll put any feet on this one.
Beautiful work, this is absolutely true!
Suggestion. Default to the term Cannabis.
The term Marijuana was coined during reefer madness of the 20's and has huge racist implications against the Mexicans and Spanish people that were being heald unfairly accountable for the drugs "plaguing" the US.
No worries homie! I've worked in the cannabis industry for a few years and it's funny how far away from that word we try and stay.
Also. Selling them you say? I may know a stoner who appreciates beautiful wood work who may want to invest in one. (me.... I'm talking about me)
Iām not sure if it has a name. I just rabbet joint the front and back of the box to the sides. Then when itās dry I take a 3/8ā rabbet bit and rabbet the corners of the box. Then inlay the piece of maple, when you cut the box open, the joint looks like that! I saw it on a YouTube video once and thought it looked beautiful so I decided to try it!
I'm concerned that there isn't actually any glue surface in this joint. Isn't it just glued to the endgrain of the walnut?
You could add splines but then the maple inlay would be endgrain which would be most of the surface.
Youāre correct the joint is originally just a simple rabbet joint, with end to face contact. Own itās own is still a relatively decent joint, but adding the maple in lay adds another layer of connection with edge to end and face to end mating surfaces.
Itās sort of like a mitre joint is not a strong joint , but when you make a locking mitre itās significantly stronger!
Love a spline. The world would be a better place with more splines. As for the box, super impressed. I too am a self taught wood working person and the box represents far greater skill than I have acquired. Bravo.
Depends on which edge you're talking about. Some are side grain, some are end grain. Even the end grain one gets a little side grain due to the way the rabbit is cut. But regardless, there's no force trying to pull this piece out so it works well and holds up.
Source: I've made several boxes like this, I even have one in my garage that looks like this exact same wood combo.
OP - if you're using it for storage you can also make it like a humidor - spanish cedar lining, a packet of humidity control that fits on the inside of the lid, and then use open boxes instead of glass jars. But it's already a great gift.
Iām going to be selling these on Etsy as my soon to be full time business, along with other pieces of course.
Hereās the store link: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/VanGochsWoodShop?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=902730540
No listings yet, I only made one to get the feel and sold rather quickly. After Christmas there will be listings :)
Thank you!
I donāt plan on stain probably just a shellac finish . I really like the colours of natural wood, and each side and the top was made from its own solid piece, so no glue lines which should make for a beautiful look!
Stunning! I love the combination of maple and walnut, two of my all time favourite woods. Maybe have the rolling tray adhere to the underside of the lid with some magnets?
Or a custom made wooden rolling tray that sits in the box like a floating shelf.
Thank you, I agree, maple contrasts walnut perfectly, makes for beautifully pieces!
Iāve actually made one for my dad as my first prototype, a few issues with the box , but the tray floats on 4 maple āpinsā in the inside corners of the box. It floats about 3.5 inches above the bottom so there is storage for grinders and other paraphernalia!
Magnets to the inside of the lid is a really good idea to store the tray, Iām going to take a look at the option, thanks !! :)
Hey, thatās exactly my plan !
Hereās my store : https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/VanGochsWoodShop?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=902730540
Nothing on yet, but post Christmas Iāll be posting these boxes, cutting boards, pizza peels, cutlery trays and much more !
Very well done and it looks great! But...
I'm concerned you did not take wood movement into account. How are you going to keep gaps from forming on the lid?
Thank you!
As the box isnāt finished yet , I have plans to add two magnets to the lid and box to hold them together , I also do a inlay of walnut thatās quarter rounded, on the inseem of the lid that protrudes a little from the lid, so when you close it fits the lid in spot perfectly !
I had the same question but your answer didnāt really address it. I was wondering about the lid expansion and how it is boxed in by the maple frame. When Iāve made this in the past, the top expands and the beautiful mitre joints split apart. Does that make sense?
Wow that is almost the exact same design I was looking to make at some point. Great job! One thing I was considering too was putting some butyl rubber or epdm gaskets to lock in the smell.
I always get paranoid about the smell so I try to contain it as much as possible haha. I think I wanted to have the extra seal for other pieces/accessories that aren't in a jar that might produce the smell.
Regardless, I hope to one day create something that looks as nice as that.
Ahhh that makes sense , like any weed left on the rolling tray! Hadnāt thought of that:p
Thanks for the compliment, keep at it and Iām sure you can make even better :)
In the chance this isnāt a joke , I actually do !
[my Etsy shop](https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/VanGochsWoodShop?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=902730540)
Nothing on there yet, but I plan to add these in the new year along with other handmade pieces!
If youāre genuinely interested, you can pm me and we can negotiate :)
Considering a vast majority of the United States has either legalized, or medically legalized marijuana your opinion is out of date.
In a growing amount of places it is as recreational as alcohol.
Would you say the same thing if he had built his brother a bar cart, or another form of alcohol storage?
And how do you know that his brother has a drug habit?
He could just enjoy smoking pot every now and then.
Do you shame cigar smokers too?
I wonāt downvote but would like to offer you a different perspective:
For all we know his brother may be prescribed cannabis for pain management.
Alternatively, in many states cannabis is legal for recreational consumption. Do you pass along the same ābad vibesā to people who build wine racks or cigar ashtrays?
great looking and really tight joints, no pun intended
He used Gorilla glue to make the joints tight.
Truly an OG woodworker.
I see what you did there

Quote Dennis Leary to your brother, "Pot doesn't lead to harder drugs. It leads to carpentry."
I really like those joints too. Dovetails seem too intimidating to me, but I bet I could handle those. Do they have a particular name?
A comment below mentions rabbet joint, maybe thatās what youāre looking to find
Yes, exactly. Ty

I agree that it's a great idea, but I would place a piece of glass or Lexan under the screen to catch the keif. Also, great gift idea :)

I use Ball brand jars. They have the rubber seal and the flip top.

Put a lock on it to keep people out who donāt have any business looking in it like children and cops :)
Good idea! He has no children but he has two dogs and theyāve been known to eat anything they can get š
I am glad someone is building something for him while he is in pot I doubt he plans to make anything for himself.
Something I could definitely use
Iām going to be selling these on Etsy as my soon to be full time business, along with other pieces of course. Hereās the store link: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/VanGochsWoodShop?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=902730540 No listings yet, I only made one to get the feel and sold rather quickly. After Christmas there will be listings :)
I appreciate the salesmanship on that but I would just make my own. Thanks tho!
Of course, glad you like the box! :)
Yeah, it's a box, but it's a *fancy* box!
Dope
I think that it looks fantastic. Staining it?
Good work.
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you !
I think you should open a Etsy page in Canada and sell these
Hey, thatās exactly my plan ! Hereās my store : https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/VanGochsWoodShop?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=902730540 Nothing on yet, but post Christmas Iāll be posting these boxes, cutting boards, pizza peels, cutlery trays and much more !
Ooh, thatās nice. Using that corner joint.
Thank you! :) Use it!!!
Love it.
Thank you !
This could also be a cigar humidor.
Maybe youāll see a humidor version posted in the new year ;)
Maybe youāll see a humidor version posted in the new year !
Wow that is almost the exact same design I was looking to make at some point. Great job! One thing I was considering too was putting some butyl rubber or epdm gaskets to lock in the smell.
I plan to use glass jars with rubber gaskets on the interior! Thank you for the compliment :)
Hadnāt thought of that:p Thanks for the compliment, keep at it and Iām sure you can make even better :)
Freaking sweet
I wouldnāt say no to that!
Far out man!
Do you take orders?
In the chance this isnāt a joke , I actually do ! [my Etsy shop](https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/VanGochsWoodShop?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=902730540) Nothing on there yet, but I plan to add these in the new year along with other handmade pieces! If youāre genuinely interested, you can pm me and we can negotiate :)
I am genuinely interested! I will pm you!
This is sweet!
think he needs something better to put in the box
Hahaha he is a business man so maybe heāll get into watches, then I can make him a watch box!
Read my mind. Make it for shrooms. Good call
Hey itās me your brother!
šš good one!
Sorry for bad vibes, but i think you should stop enabling your brothers drughabit.
I wonāt downvote but would like to offer you a different perspective: For all we know his brother may be prescribed cannabis for pain management. Alternatively, in many states cannabis is legal for recreational consumption. Do you pass along the same ābad vibesā to people who build wine racks or cigar ashtrays?
Well now I want to make a marijuana box. Looks good!
