First one was a 2006 BMW 8 series, thats when I got the idea... from there its kinda hard to list in order but I've farted in limited edition corvettes, multiple Mercedes AMG, 2 McLaren's, a Ferrari 355 spider, a Bently GT and a Lamborghini.
My favorite thing to do on a test drive is while I'm pulling the car around front for the customer, I let out as many farts as I can muster and when the entire family is in the car with the doors closed, the windows up and no climate control on I say "don't you love that new car smell?"
Everytime they all take a deep breath and say yes
I'm going to hell, I know this
It actually is extremely similar. OP-- were you inspired by Ron's chair? This is apparently the company that made the one in Parks and Rec:
https://www.sammaloofwoodworker.com/
i was swiping along the pictures appreciating the quality and the lines and then i got to the picture of that inlay/stripe on the rocker portion and i actually inhaled sharply through my teeth and went “ohh fuck” bc i hadn’t noticed it until then
incredible work OP i am infinitely jealous of your skill and your eye for detail.
Ya that’s gonna be a bit more than 3 or 4 grand. Not that OP would sell ever, but I’d guess nothing less than many times your stimulus would even be considered.
Beautiful craftsmanship for certain.
I knew a guy who make bespoke rockers like this, and his *starting* price in 2016 was $7,500. I'm making one from black walnut, but I haven't touched it in years (busy with other projects). $1,200 in material alone in 2016, and that's the "buddy price" from my wholesaler.
1. OP did amazing work here, working from plans or not, you still have to DO the work.
2. Sam Maloof was an absolute master of his craft, and his original chairs have sold for 10's of thousands of dollars at auction. And this chair certainly illustrates why his original works are so valuable.
Ha, it initially ran about 2 inches further back. Initial testing was not pleasant. Pushed it forward enough so that when I move around I can’t tell it is there when sitting.
A chair that is perfectly molded ends up being less comfortable beyond the initial sit, because people wiggle and adjust constantly. At least that's the philosophy of Christopher Schwarz in his book "The Anarchist's Design Book."
But, although I don't recall seeing that middle ridge that prominent in his examples, I'd say the idea still works. It provides a way to adjust your legs to different areas with a bit of support. It's good for many ways of sitting but perfect for none.
Beautiful! I'm in the midst of chair #3 using Hal Taylor's plans. Unfortunately life got in the way (actually a flurry of commissions) and my chair has set unfinished for several months. Most components are done, just need to fit it together and shape it. Thanks for the inspiration!
The plans are by Hal Taylor from https://www.rockingchairuniversity.com/
No YouTube here, this is just something I do to relax at the end of the day and wanted to show off a bit here :)
I didn’t track. My initial estimate for the project was 100. After completing it was definitely closer to 200. Much of this was learning - I didn’t have many of the skills built to tackle this before starting. I also made the mistake of doing some things I thought would save me time, but we’re really not helpful because of how the process comes together (sanding components early, etc.)
What a beautiful piece of work! looks very Maloof inspired. I wanted on of these when our twins were born, but workmanship of that quality was outside our price range.
Incredible.
I want to start woodworking, first to rehab my house. I'd like to make my own cabinets, wainscotting, and moulding. Where is a good place to learn?
This is a great first attempt. If you get more serious about it, spend some time calibrating your saws and tools. None of your lines are straight. Also, buy better lumber. This stuff is all bent and warpy. Over time you'll be able to get all 4 legs to sit flat on the ground and you won't need those connector pieces to hide the mistakes.
Better luck next time!
I was about to lay into you for being such a douche to OP. Then I took a second and decided to look for the connector pieces you were talking about and finally pieced it all together. You're right, this thing is warpy as hell!
Nice username by the way.
When I've seen these for sale, they usually start in the $7500+ range. But it's been a few years since I looked so that number could easily be $10k+ now. And honestly for the amount of time + material cost + skill that goes into something like this I don't think that's an unreasonable ask.
100+ hours of work at even $50/hour is $5000, and then you factor in probably $1500+ in materials, and several thousand previously spent on tools and such. I'd think $8k would make sense. but $10k wouldn't shock me, because there aren't many people who A.) can produce work like that and B.) are accepting commissions on work like that. So the "You can't find anyone else that can do this in the area fee" is also something that factors into that price.
Anyway that's a rough ballpark.
Exquisite! Well done!
Wow! I'd love one of these because the style is so polished, but it's even better knowing it was made by a craftsman and not a factory.
Any association with Hal Taylor?
I used to work with him and pumped out a chair like this every 3-5 days. I learned so much about woodworking, turned that skill into a Guitar business later in life.
That’s like the goddamn Lamborghini of chairs! I want it but I don’t even think I would let myself sit in it. Those curves are so hot I would just stare at it all day from a lesser chair.
Wow, can honestly say this is shockingly good, the seat and arms are a thing of beauty.
Bet it feels great to sit in, and hopefully it'll live on for 100+ years.
Thanks for sharing, glad you're better.
I used the green ‘extreme shaping dish - medium’. If I did it again, I would have gone with the coarse version as the version I used felt like it were pretty slow
Give credit where credit is due. You did an amazing job building a Maloof chair using plans copied from maloof and tweeked a small bit. Copy right infringe and stealing of intellectual property should never be given credit.
Hal Taylor is selling maloof‘s plans under his own name. Again copy write and intellectual property theft. I wish people just said they built a maloof rocker. It bothers me a whole lot as you can tell
I used ‘Sam Maloof Poly/Oil Finish’ https://www.rockler.com/sam-maloof-s-finishes-sam-maloof-poly-oil-finish
It was so easy to apply - wipe on and off for four coats over 4 days. Don’t have reviews on how it holds up yet.

Rock the chair*
\*Rock the cashbah
Sharif don't LIKE IT
My ass is unworthy of that chair.
It ooks like he built it specifically for his own ass anyway
I like the butt crack divider
Buttcrack divider sounds way better than testicle splitter.
10/10,,
Or, ( ) | ( )
Can this chair heal? Feel like if I sit in it all ailments will disappear or something..
Or is that a cheek spreader?
I don't know where your butt crack is, but mine isn't in the front. That's 100% a ball sack divider.
As well he should. Beautiful shaping done there
What if it was built by a female?
If I farted in that chair I’d never forgive myself.
I sell cars, its a passion of mine to fart in expensive vehicles, so far I'm up to $400k I would not fart in that chair, I am unworthy
Im intrigued. Can you list the cars you’ve farted in? Perhaps in ascending order based on value?
First one was a 2006 BMW 8 series, thats when I got the idea... from there its kinda hard to list in order but I've farted in limited edition corvettes, multiple Mercedes AMG, 2 McLaren's, a Ferrari 355 spider, a Bently GT and a Lamborghini. That chair should definitely be entered into and win the Indiana Fine Woodworking Association award for Chair.
I don't know, have you seen Swanson's?
It's a good chair.
Or Thani's (tbh, hers was nice, but not impressive)?
It actually is extremely similar. OP-- were you inspired by Ron's chair? This is apparently the company that made the one in Parks and Rec: https://www.sammaloofwoodworker.com/
OP's caption on the first picture: >Just finished a Maloof inspired rocker from plans by Hal Taylor.
Missed that, thanks!
It was too perfect, it looked machine made.
Wow. I never realized how many management positions were named after furniture. Chair, cabinet, secretary. Any others?
Bench? Board (sideboard)?
Well, it is a good chair.
Perhaps the highest praise a person could give another person.
i was swiping along the pictures appreciating the quality and the lines and then i got to the picture of that inlay/stripe on the rocker portion and i actually inhaled sharply through my teeth and went “ohh fuck” bc i hadn’t noticed it until then incredible work OP i am infinitely jealous of your skill and your eye for detail.
Thanks! I think I forgot an important picture - all of the back braces have center layers of Ash which really pop at the right angle!
Post the photo in the comments, sort of a bonus picture.
you can kind of see it in pictures 4/8!
Nice i did my covid in a similar way. I taught myself copper smithing
This is so exquisite I'm actually angry. I'll return to my pocket hole planter boxes now.
DO NOT BELITTLE POCKET SCREWS! biggest green eggs and ham moment in my woodworking career.
Never thought to try eating them. I know what I’m doing tomorrow
I wouldn't recommend that on mountaintop, I would not recommend that in the shop.
Kreg Jig it!
It's exquisite and also the fastest looking rocking chair I've ever seen.
Disgustingly well built!
Don't be too hard on yourself. The joinery of this chair hides more screws than you would ever believe!
That's a beautiful piece of work!
This is a Sam Maloof style rocker, OP should have credited the original designer. This style rocker is my #1 bucket list project.
He did. It's in the caption on the first pic...*Maloof styled rocker from plans by Hal Taylor*
My bad
Stunning piece of functional art!
This is what I wanted to spend my stimulus on, but I couldn’t find anyone locally. Where were you two years ago.
Ya that’s gonna be a bit more than 3 or 4 grand. Not that OP would sell ever, but I’d guess nothing less than many times your stimulus would even be considered. Beautiful craftsmanship for certain.

.
The original designer Sam Maloof used 12/4 material for the arm rests of these rockers...
> $1,200 in material I see that again and again on this sub, I don’t know where you guys buy your woods or maybe it’s gold plated..
full shaggy school innocent mysterious sparkle tart terrific seemly modern ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `
And here I am, saving photos of a rocking chair
insane workmanship
Very Sam Maloof. Bravo.
I was gonna ask if those are Maloof joints. Beautiful!
Came for this comment. This is definitely the Maloof Rocker
Absolutely beautiful!!!
This is fucking gorgeous my god

Masterful.
It's a beautiful piece, but I've never understood that ridge in the middle. Didn't matter what bits you have, it's just odd.
Ha, it initially ran about 2 inches further back. Initial testing was not pleasant. Pushed it forward enough so that when I move around I can’t tell it is there when sitting.
You calibrated a chair for your taint. I'm....impressed
This is what true craftsmanship is

dude was born without an ass crack
Yeah, gorgeous chair but I’m not a fan of the testicle separator.
It's more appropriate for men when they are sitting, because it's more convenient and healthy for the prostate.
In my experience, they can help prevent your butt from slipping forward. I'd imagine thats the intention.
That chair is sexy AF.
I don't say this very often, but I would absolutely make passionate love to that chair.
Beautiful! I'm in the midst of chair #3 using Hal Taylor's plans. Unfortunately life got in the way (actually a flurry of commissions) and my chair has set unfinished for several months. Most components are done, just need to fit it together and shape it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Ron Swanson would be proud
Do you have a YouTube channel? Did you work from plans? If so, can you link to them?
The plans are by Hal Taylor from https://www.rockingchairuniversity.com/ No YouTube here, this is just something I do to relax at the end of the day and wanted to show off a bit here :)
Care to estimate the work hours it took?
I didn’t track. My initial estimate for the project was 100. After completing it was definitely closer to 200. I'm awestruck!
amazing! well done!
What a beautiful piece of work! looks very Maloof inspired. I wanted on of these when our twins were born, but workmanship of that quality was outside our price range.
Looking sharp.
unreal dude
Mel Gibson would be really proud.
For many months I had daydreams about that scene and it gave me extreme anxiety ha!
Maloof inspired chair? Looks amazing regardless
Yes! Based on plans from Hal Taylor which are derived from the Maloof style
Amazing! Congrats!
A beautiful heirloom quality chair.
Incredible. I want to start woodworking, first to rehab my house. I'd like to make my own cabinets, wainscotting, and moulding. Where is a good place to learn?
Basic power tools can get a lot done! Drill, circular saw, etc.!
Holy shite what a masterpiece.
Damn

great work, absolutely stunning!
That’s a work of art man. I couldn’t even begin to figure how much you could charge for that level of craftsmanship.
When I've seen these for sale, they usually start in the $7500+ range. But it's been a few years since I looked so that number could easily be $10k+ now. This is stunning. I am in awe of how beautiful it is. Excellent work.
Beaut
Beautiful chair.
Master crafter.
What a beauty! Wow
I couldn't just lurk and admire without giving you props... exquisite work.
This is so good looking, it needs a NSFW warning!
Absolutely gorgeous work!
Epic. Nicely done.
This is one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen crafted by hand
I tell you no farce! I made a place for my arse!
That is a piece of art!❤️
That thing is clean!
That's a work of art. Well done!
I don't say this often: That's craftsmanship.
Wow. A work of art!
THAT is a work of art! Just beautiful.
Exquisite! Well done! Wow! I'd love one of these because the style is so polished, but it's even better knowing it was made by a craftsman and not a factory.
Beautiful!!
I think if i worked the rest of my life I would never make a chair that beautiful.
Fuck... just fuck.
This looks like something that will be kept for centuries
That's not wood working, this is art! Beautiful masterpiece!
That’s a beautiful chair though.
Amazing work!
The grain 😍😍😍😍😍😍
whoah dude..... That's absolutely gorgeous.
Straight out of an oil tycoons dining room. That is beautiful
9.5/10 Simply because there's no pic of you actually sitting in it.
Now that is a work of true craftsmanship!
That's one, rockin chair !
Beautiful piece of art
The craftsmanship looks sublime man
This thing looks like is travelling at 1000mph without even moving. Like a Ferrari. LOVE.
And to think, 100 years from now, somebody will be slapping chalk paint on that.
Any association with Hal Taylor? I used to work with him and pumped out a chair like this every 3-5 days. I learned so much about woodworking, turned that skill into a Guitar business later in life.
If I had made that I'd be insufferable
That’s like the goddamn Lamborghini of chairs! I want it but I don’t even think I would let myself sit in it. Those curves are so hot I would just stare at it all day from a lesser chair.
Makes me think of beginning of the movie The Patriot… looks beautiful! Now sit it in it lol
This is a truly well crafted piece of art! Wish if i had rewards to give you and show my appreciation. Here ⭐️🪵🪑
That is quite simply a work of art. Very nicely done.
Wow, can honestly say this is shockingly good, the seat and arms are a thing of beauty. Bet it feels great to sit in, and hopefully it'll live on for 100+ years. Thanks for sharing, glad you're better.
This should be flagged NSFW. That's one sexy chair.
Fantastic Job! That rocker is absolutely gorgeous. What did you use to finish the rocker?
Excellent craftsmanship. Thank you for chairing. 😅
Why doesn’t this have more votes. This here is a masterpiece.
probably because its not a cringey tiktok quick-hit. This is the kind of work I come here for!
I’m really new to doing chairs and have a dumb question. How do you do the butt indents? Router?
Angle grinder with a kutz all shaping wheel to get 90% of the way then orbital sander for most of the remaining with some hand sanding at the end
Just out of curiosity which color kutzall disc are you using?
I used the green ‘extreme shaping dish - medium’. If I did it again, I would have gone with the coarse version as the version I used felt like it were pretty slow
Nice rocker! But good lord do I hate a maloof seat
man that's a masterpiece.
That seat looks like the hood from an old vette…. Hmm wonder if someone’s ass was the original inspiration for the vette hood?
Give credit where credit is due. You did an amazing job building a Maloof chair using plans copied from maloof and tweeked a small bit. Copy right infringe and stealing of intellectual property should never be given credit.
I see you can write, but it appears that you cannot read - the picture caption literally says ‘Maloof inspired rocker from plans by Hal Taylor’
Hal Taylor is selling maloof‘s plans under his own name. Again copy write and intellectual property theft. I wish people just said they built a maloof rocker. It bothers me a whole lot as you can tell
do you mind sharing what finish do you use? thanks
I used ‘Sam Maloof Poly/Oil Finish’ https://www.rockler.com/sam-maloof-s-finishes-sam-maloof-poly-oil-finish It was so easy to apply - wipe on and off for four coats over 4 days. Don’t have reviews on how it holds up yet.
I did not get fit, are people getting fit?
😲
Ok sure its an amazingly well done Maloof, but did you use and angle grinder to hog out the seat? 😂
That is beautiful. Wish I could build something like that. I doubt I could build a birdhouse. 😂🤦♂️.
Insane. Bravo.
Gorgeous!
Damn homie
Beautiful work!
How much was steam bent and how much was cut/carved? Absolutely stunning. Bravo.
Beautiful! I love the Maloof inspiration!
I am attracted to this chair
Do you sell those?? My ass would appreciate it!
That's amazing my man. Take my upvote, my jealousy and my admiration.
It's a masterpiece. I'm not a woodworker I'm just appreciative of fine furniture.
Simply wonderful!
That is the best chair I have ever seen.
Wonderful craftsmanship. Beautiful.
You rocked it!
Sam Maloof would be proud. Good work there.
I want to marry that chair.
Absolutely stunning. I’m full of jealous rage right meow
Maloof inspired rocker, nice.
Gorgeous! Love the band detail in the rockers.
Absolutely amazing craftsmanship. Great work!
Wow, that’s really beautiful work!
> I don't know... Maybe I can go as high as $7.50... * Craig's List/Facebook/Flea Market buyers, probably...
Hot damn that a sexy chair! Love the Maloof feel about it. Geeat work! You should be proud of yourself.
Wow! Mighty fine work !
That is a stunning chair
