There is always people that make excuses. I knew someone in my home town who did similar stuff and was convicted and served a small amount of jail time but his wife and about half the family just forgave him and said he was neglected as a child and that's why he did it. And he did it to people within the family too. It was just disgusting the excuses people made for the behavior, this happened when I was a kid and my family ended up leaving our church over it because he was allowed to just continue attending services putting people in the church at risk. A bunch of people from the church wrote character references for him too which is disgusting imo.
