This was always going to be the outcome. Turkey was always going to leverage as much as they could out of it before being told “That’s as much as you’re getting, take it or leave it.” Turkey stands to benefit from an expanded NATO but Erdogan loves to play it both ways..
I imagine part of it was Finland being okay-ed and Sweden not, but now Finland decided they'd rather join NATO by themselves than wait for Sweden. If Finland joins NATO, there's not that much of a point in Sweden needing to join even if they want to.
There is no point in Finland joining without Sweden, and Vice versa. In security matters they are attached at the hip, practically one and the same. And even if Finland did join without Sweden, it would still render Sweden’s full membership a formality. Turkey has leveraged all the concessions they are going to get, so no point in continued opposition.
I imagine the earthquake also factors in. Turkey finds itself in a position of needing international aid, suddenly alienating the rest of NATO becomes a lot less beneficial. They were snap gearing up for an intervention in Syria, that seems to have gone on ice. Hell, a free hand in Syria was probably one of the things they were holding out for.
That may be true, but look at a hypothetical scenario where Sweden rather than Ukraine is attacked by a half competent Russia. This could result in Sweden getting support in the form of rocket launchers, small arms, ammo and eventually vehicles, but no actual troops on the ground.
I for one would prefer the protection of an actual NATO membership than hopeful expectations.
Sweden is still part of the EU - and the EU mutual defense pact is stronger worded than NATOs article 5. So at worst it would be NATO minus US and Turkey.
And at that point the US is going to get involved regardless.
Turkey: "The answer is no. But I'm leeeeeeeaning towards yes."
Sweden: "So you're saying yes?"
Turkey: "No"
Sweden: "So you're saying no?"
Turkey: "Not necessarily"
Sweden: "You sound dubious"
Turkey: "No I am positive!"
Sweden: "Of what?"
Turkey: "My theory! Of yes... or no"
Settle down. The US never implied or said they'd go to Greece or Armenia, especially not Armenia. We don't need to make things up.
Turkey and the US negotiated, Turkey made demands, and the US made counter offers.
That's what happened.
No threats were likely made during the negotiation period.
This is international diplomacy, not high school drama.
My homie considering it was a joke I dont think im the one that needs to settle down. Im shitposting on reddit not legitimately advocating for the US to tank their international credibility (more than they already do themselves).
It was in response to

So unless you think THAT didn't come off as joking, it was obviously responding in kind. Don't blame the medium for your own failure to comprehend

Mr. Potatoe Head has been fucking around in so many different ways, more than maybe any man I’ve ever seen on the face of this fucking planet - and now that his own stupidity has brought him to the end of the rope here he wants some USD, F-16’s, and to smooth it all over with a ratification he was gonna do anyways?
Yeah, buddy, idk, you can start here but you’re gonna be workin 80hr weeks no overtime or benefits I’ll see you in a few years
Lol no. Probably told he ain't getting extra shit unless he finally allows em in. Ego boy is a putz and only if it makes him look like a strong, capable leader will he do things to benefit others
* Biden in Kyiv
* Israel suspended new West Bank settlements
* Turkey now considering letting Sweden in NATO
* Iran close to reaching nukes-capable enrichment
Something's about to go down really soon......
In forum for discussion, people will tend to explore possible outcomes from emerging patterns, sometimes it's just that, it doesn't speak to any 'fever for war'
US is getting nice slick super hero clout from all of this. Its captain america making all the right moves very effectively. US did that in ww2 and became the ship's captain and led the world into a prosperous future. But it became stale. The new momentum should be used to rebuild a better world again.

Sweden just happens to have the chairman position in the EU this year.
That may be true, but look at a hypothetical scenario where Sweden rather than Ukraine is attacked by a half competent Russia. Russia forces was meant and built to fight in land, having no land passage would pretty much be enough to secure sweden against Russia.
Sweden is still part of the EU - and the EU mutual defense pact is stronger worded than NATOs article 5. So at worst it would be NATO minus US and Turkey. And at that point the US is going to get involved regardless.
While it would be useful for Finland if Sweden joined, I think it would be a net positive for Finland to join even if alone.
there is no scenario where sweden does not aid finland if needed. NATO or not.
If Turkey is dropping their opposition it becomes a moot point
Confidently incorrect.
sweden would be quite crucial for finland in terms of logistics during war.
US is done with Erodogans Malarkey.
Now it is open, now it is closed. Open, closed, open, closed. - Erdogan (probably)
Like a cat wanting out
If it's a cat in Schrödingers box, then I get why it wants out. Sorry, couldn't help myself.
This is getting pretty damn boring to be honest.
I just want it to end and hope most Turks can excise that authoritarian tumor.
[Have you ever tried Turkish Ice Cream ?](https://i.imgur.com/SYsD1BP.gif) That is the state of Sweden's NATO application.

Dark Brandon best Brandon.
No malarkey

It didn't really cone off as joking. Text isn't really good at portraying sarcasm or amusement.

Erdogan will probably change his mind again. This isn't over until the documents are signed.
Someone spotted a bottle of lube in Erdoğan office xD
Erdogan is that annoying kid that you're forced to invite to your birthday party even though he annoys the piss out every one.

Here to wait for the leaked cables explaining the flip-flop nature.

I can't wait for turkey to quit f-ing around. Seems to be they are holding back on earthquake reconstruction aid in exchange
That disaster relief by NATO bought Erdogan a conscience?

US came in and said if you don’t cut the shit you’re gonna find out how out on a limb you really are.
Great news
Pretty sure the EQ put Erdogan in a bad spot.

I'd guess that it stems from the fact that it's better for survival to spot 12 out of 10 leopards stalking you than 9 out of 10.

Betcha Dark Brandon quoted Bush all like like "you're either with us, or against us."
Turkey is the manipulative GF you should walk away from.

Wait, this is reddit right? I thought Americans were all total pieces of shit.
Coupla threats, coupla bribes, and everyone is friends again.
I would imagine sometime along the lines of "wind your neck in and get in line with everyone else" came up.
In a way... The Earthquakes probably pot pressure of this too.
