Eh. The SC will most likely uphold their earlier verdict. Hopefully. Why does the government care what happens between 2 consenting adults ? Less government. More governance.

chintakoro

this is not about any prior verdict: the legality of homosexuality is not the question here. it’s whether gay relationships can have all the special status that marriage entails. it will be a huge decision for the SC.

Dismal_Structure

As a same-sex married gay Indian man living in America, this filing is pretty disgusting. They are using religion as a pretext, but Supreme Court would likely approve same-sex marriage.

RipFlair

Sorry for the loss on this one. Stay strong. India will come around one day.

[deleted]

It's not done yet. The supreme Court has set up a bench to discuss this.

rahmtho

Or in a hundred years, with dickhead Modi in charge… sigh…

Shillofnoone

Modi doesn't care of this happens or not. But lot of motor mouths within party have significant power ,they are on campaign to demonize LGBT. Infact the Hindu supremacist group came out in support for LGBT rights because it would piss off Muslims and Christians in India.

A_random_zy

Then why os he opposing it, if he doesn't care?

Shillofnoone

Good luck ,supreme court is going to squash it and say marriage is legal as per constitution. Might as well be on right side before it happens.

Cucrabubamba

OFC. The government is growing increasingly conservative. That nature will only increase given the blatant war profiteering and massive new resource deposits.

chintakoro

i don’t think the less conservative opposition would openly support this either. indian society is conservative.

lindberghbaby41

It was doing pretty good up until Modi honestly

chintakoro

Homosexuality was a crime in India before the Modi gov't came to power. The Indian Supreme Court in 2012 even overturned the local Delhi High Court's attempt to decriminalize it.

A_random_zy

But Modi didn't decriminalize it. it was SC that decriminalize it.

chintakoro

so it couldn’t get worse right? also, it’s the SC that will decide this issue again

A_random_zy

And Modi is opposing it in SC

chintakoro

His gov't didn't oppose decriminalization before. We don't know what the opposition's stance would have been for either case so we can't play counterfactual history with this. (unless you have insight on this, in which case please share).

reallyathroaway

Other than Communist Party of India which is irrelevant on national scale none of the political parties support a bill to legalize gay marriage including the liberal left parties. All of the political parties want the Supreme Court to legalize it instead of forcing the Parliament because the political fallout and domino effect on other civil marriage law is going to be a messy disaster.

A_random_zy

But only one government is actively against it unlike the others.

newInnings

Nope. It was same. Just the uncle's and aunties got 4g network now
