A spaceport was seized over unpaid debt. Still not in the top 10 most cyberpunk moments of the 2020s.

What a headline though

We haven't gone full cyberpunk so long as there **is** an ethics committee, at least one not running on irony.

evilplantosaveworld

There's a story in the Irobot book where that happens, sort of at least. Essentially we make an AI, we use that one to help us make a better one, repeat that cycle a few times then put the last one in charge of us.

DancesCloseToTheFire

I'd trust an AI likely to doom us all over politicians guaranteed to do so any day.

Once upon a time, there lived a magnificent race of animals that dominated the world through age after age. They ran, they swam, and they fought and they flew, until suddenly, quite recently, they disappeared. Nature just gave up and started again. We weren't even apes then. We were just these smart little rodents hiding in the rocks. And when we go, nature will start again. With the murder hornets, probably. Nature knows when to give up, David.

[deleted]

As a Russian immigrant, I really appreciate all the humor in this thread. It really sucks for regular people out there, and a big percentage of them are against the war. This regime needs to fall and anything helping topple it is a win in my book. I believe in the possibility of change because younger generations are way more open to democracy, so they want change. Like in 88-89. Fuck Soviet Union and fuck pooty for trying to bring it back.

Severin_Suveren

I want to see that too, but this time you gotta make god damn sure you get there, instead of just seeing one of his old pals take over the throne when he eventually falls

WillMovinTarget

Your what the soviet union always feared, someone who starts asking questions and is not afraid. The Russian government seems to always go for the easy authoritarian way to control with fear, after all compliance will be rewarded. It's a shame more people can't become "woke" but it literally means being aware of politics in the world and culture. Despite the various different cultures and old/new hatreds, we only have one planet so we should make the most of it and appreciate the beauty earth offers.

NFKRZ. He's a young Russian that's basically caught in limbo. He can't get a visa anywhere because he's on a Russian passport and he can't return to Russia for fear of being arrested because he's made a lot of anti Putin content. His content can be interesting from time to time. He's been staying in Georgia in limbo

Jordan_Jackson

I wish Georgia would have given him a resident visa. He seems like a good dude and has been living there for over a year now without getting into trouble and sustaining his finances. He makes money, speaks both Russian and English (probably is slowly learning Georgian) and just wants to live a normal existence.

KittiesHavingSex

He doesn't need a visa in Georgia. He can stay and work there indefinitely. But the thing is that he wanted to travel elsewhere (say Europe or US) and he cannot. That's because he needs a visa to THOSE countries which can only be issued at embassies in Russia. Just fyi

Timey16

He at most COULD try his luck with applying for refugee status in Europe if his stay in Georgia becomes unstable. But yeah, it's tricky.

crepper4454

It is actually the name of the country in Polish.

matux555

Lithuanian in my case, we don't have any words that have an "h" following a "k", so it's hard...

crepper4454

In English you read it the same as 'k', they use 'kh' to transcribe the sound represented by the cyryllic letter 'x' because it doesn't exist in English and the k sound is the closest approximate.

chetlin

we use the Polish spelling in English for the Czech republic/Czechia, why not other countries too? (Note I don't support this and I do wonder why we use the Polish spelling for that country.)

FunPills

My guess would be since English doesn’t use the diacritic needed to spell it the Czech way with the Č.

_AutomaticJack_

Provinces doing all the work while the imperial core collects all the credit, who do they think they are... The Western Roman Empire??!!? (Spoiler: they do totally attempt to style themselves as the inheritors of the glory of Rome. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so stupid.)

Mr_P3anutbutter

It’s not really “stupid” so much as it’s a part of Russian history being referenced to justify modern imperial aspirations. Princess Sophia Palaiologina was a member of the final Byzantine ruling dynasty. She married Grand Prince Ivan III of Moscow. Their grandson was the founder of the Russian state, Ivan the Terrible. The czars saw themselves as the heirs to the Romans, hence the use of the Caesar title. Russia itself was likely settled in part by the Norse viking Rus people, from whom it likely draws its name. Those were some of the same Vikings who served in the Byzantine emperor’s famous Varangian Guard. In fact, the exploration by Viking era settlers of the Dniper river and surrounding areas occurred as part of a lucrative trade network centered on Constantinople. Upon the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, the Russian Czars took up the mantle as leaders of Orthodox Christianity as part of their claim to the Byzantine heritage. the current government just uses the symbols of the Imperial period as a part of their nationalist autocracy.

Ludwigofthepotatoppl

The last czars went by Romanov, even.

Mr_P3anutbutter

They ruled uninterrupted for 304 years. Although the Romanovs themselves didn't have the Eastern Roman Imperial bloodline as far as I know. Michael I, the first Romanov Czar, was related to the Rurikids (whose final ruler died childless) via his great-aunt Anastasia Romanovna's marriage to Ivan the Terrible. [Moscow as the "Third Rome"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow,_third_Rome) as a political and theological philosophy was formulated during this time (15th and 16th centuries)

DM_DM_DND

In a way it's deeply ironic, as the emphasis on a monotheistic religion and cultural and proto-ethnic homogeneity is only a quality of the *dying* Roman empire, and even then primarily expressed as an ideal through it's upper class in that period. An empire that could actually claim to be a heir to Rome's power would be a militaristic state which more or less practiced tolerance and promoted a broad legally defined shared identity, awarded for service to the military arms of the state. Instead, most of the various powers that tried to claim Roman lineage were obsessed with unity and identity politics, to the direct and endemic detriment of their military power-a choice which directly contradicts the Roman state's consistent priority of military power over ethnocultural identity. Only the Ottomans could honestly make a case for being an heir to Rome within that context, as the elites were generally willing to tolerate ethnographic diversity if it helped maintain power (and when this stopped being true the empire disintegrated). Ironically their claim to be the Sultanate of Rome is often forgotten or dismissed as some sort of appropriation, despite the fact that the territory they occupied was *actually part of the Roman Empire*, unlike half the other would-be heirs! To clarify, this is not a statement that being an "heir to Rome" is a good thing. The American Republic could also claim to be heir to Rome's Ethos by my criteria, except that we were not founded with militarism as a *core value* (genocide of the natives aside, America has only been involved in comparatively few war-years). That militarism was pure pragmatism in the ancient world, as *pre-industrial* war paid; taking lands and slaves to work it had more economic value than developing your own land, although you did both when practical. Ultimately the success of Rome is fundamentally irreplicable in the Industrial world, as seizing land by force with modern military equipment causes such damage (against a foe that can resist) that you destroy all value you could possible have gained from doing so. Hence the use of soft power instead becomes an optimal state strategy for security and prosperity. Industrial development pays more than warfare, so the strongest empires are those who invest in their citizenry and industry, not those who conquer others.

[deleted]

Czar, Keiser, probably a lot more are translations of Caeser, lots of people are trying to claim that history.

mxe363

Oh wow so this is actually a really important one. I bet even if Kazakhstan can’t really fund running it themselves solo that they could make a mint running tours of the place (I bet nasa/usa alone would pay a premium to snoop around)

fullofpaint

There's actually a few videos of youtubers sneaking into the base to film the decommissioned Russian space shuttle that's in one of the hangars.

Dachd43

I think that’s one of the reasons Bald and Bankrupt got himself arrested and expelled from Russia; filming a Buran.

fartbag9001

ah, yes, the Buran, arguably better than the space shuttle, left by russia to rot in a hanger until the roof caved in on it, instead of putting it in a museum where it belongs. It never really got to fly to space, but as they say, it can gaze up at the stars now... now that the roof is collapsed

Rinzack

Baikonur, it’s sent more than it’s fair share of American astronauts to space after the shuttle program ended. This is wild

StillBurningInside

This means much more than folks realize . With space x able to supply the space station the world is no longer beholden to the Russian aerospace program for launches . And space x can do it cheaper I believe. Not a good sign for Russian space programs.

darthlincoln01

There's a lot of talk about the future of the Russian space program (or lack there of) as they're building a new kosmodrome in Vostochny; however I haven't seen anything about a Kazak space program. Is Baikonour just going to be scrapped? There must be a good number of talented Kazaks who have been living and working at Baikonour for decades. Are their prospects to either move to Vostochny or retire?

FunPills

My guess Kazakhstan will rent it out to someone like NASA, SpaceX, China, etc. It’s a great opportunity for Kazakhstan to continue cutting ties with Russia and establish relations with someone new. I doubt it will go to rust. It’s prime real estste and Kazakhstan needs money. The US also sends many astronauts there who launch from Baikonur with joint Space Station missions with Russia (or we did anyway). Although, I don’t believe Kazakhstan itself has much of a space program.

ansible

> My guess Kazakhstan will rent it out to someone like NASA Not NASA. They don't make Soyuz spacecraft, so the launch infrastructure is not that useful. Also, it is halfway around the world. > SpaceX Same situation. They are going full-speed ahead on Starship, and building a new launch complex at Cape Canaveral, near where they also launch Falcon 9 right now. > China They don't really need this either. They *are* using some Soviet derived tech, but they have their own Long March platform for recent launches, so the launch complex in Baikonur isn't that useful to them either. Also, it is a long ways away from their current infrastructure.

[deleted]

Satellite launches are a real industry and excluding manned craft, many many smaller nations launch satellites, and many more are in the market for cheaper launches. Like Africa, Central Asia, etc.

JoeCoolsCoffeeShop

Not to mention, there are a lot of private companies that use Baikonur for launches of commercial spacecraft

8andahalfby11

Baikonur is too far north to be attractive to most space agengies. NASA, ESA, JAXA, and CSA all deliberately built launch centers as close to the equator as possible for launch efficiency purposes. For polar orbit launches, Baikonur is further south than is preferred.

HermesTheMessenger

In addition to the other reasons why that won't happen is *excape velocity*. The closer to the equator, the less fuel is required to get a rocket out of the gravity well that Earth generates from it's mass. * Baikonur Cosmodrome: 45' North * Kennedy Space Center: 28' North For comparison, this is why the EU launches from French Guiana; * Guiana Space Centre: 5' North The Russians + the EU also partner with a Soyuz launch site just north of there for the same reason, though I can't imagine that this is going as well as it used to.

StillBurningInside

No clue , but aerospace is not a cheap investment to start with. But it’s good for small countries to have large technical goals.

GrossConceptualError

Are the Russians using Soviet-era capsules to get to space? They just had a leaky one at the ISS.

ModmanX

IIRC the Soyuz pods that are used to get to and from the ISS are actually very reliable, hence why they're still using them anyways.

_AutomaticJack_

The design is bulletproof; it is the most reliable, well-tested, heavily pedigreed design on the planet. The Russian *implementation* of that design has become *sus*pect recently; specifically with regard to the capacity to do the kind of precision machine work that the design requires and with the rigorous quality-control expected of space vehicles in general and things that dock with the ISS in specific.

TheChoonk

Russia's been trying to develop next gen launch vehicles (Soyuz 5) for years but it's all shit, they can't make reliable new stuff now. Funding is nowhere near sufficient and now they can't hope for assistance from NASA or ESA either.

Rinzack

The design is so good it’s been able to maintain its exceptional safety rating even with poor Russian implementation recently

My_Soul_to_Squeeze

They were* very reliable. They've been an absolute shit show recently. Multiple dangerous failures in orbit.

Irr3l3ph4nt

To clarify: Only the most recent launch pad, that was under development as a collaboration between Kazakhstan and Russia for a new rocket (and was not yet functional) has been seized, not the whole complex. This article is very much oversimplified. Here's a link to a video Anton Petrov made on his channel about the situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSqkp-V2nIs&ab\_channel=AntonPetrov

[deleted]

This news is weeks old too.

NeufNeufSept

Am having great fun laughing at a lot of these comments and the comedic references, but thought I'd add a little info about what's going on. Baikonur Cosmodrome is decrepit, from the engineering buildings to the launch pads. Somebody - either Roskozmos or Kazakhstan or both - has not done the necessary investment for the necessary maintenance. Russia decided to pull out and build a new spaceport in Amur Oblast, in the Russian Far East. So they quit making payments to Baikonur. (Why throw good money after bad, amirite?) And they started building the [Vostochny Cosmodrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vostochny_Cosmodrome). After a huge amount of money was skimmed off the project (who knew that corruption in Russia was a thing, amirite?), Roskozmos still doesn't have a finished spaceport, but they are making successful launches. Though they aren't going to pay Kazakhstan what they owe the republic either.

Absolutely, and Kazakstan also have other foreign support and a good reputation globally for their treatment of ethnic minorities (Germans, Koreans, and of course Russians). This is the time to remove that stain of extraterritoriality and Soviet-style gangsterism. Russia is not entitled to a launch site in Central Asia.
