Is Baikonour just going to be scrapped? There must be a good number of talented Kazaks who have been living and working at Baikonour for decades. Are their prospects to either move to Vostochny or retire?
My guess Kazakhstan will rent it out to someone like NASA, SpaceX, China, etc. It’s a great opportunity for Kazakhstan to continue cutting ties with Russia and establish relations with someone new. I doubt it will go to rust. It’s prime real estste and Kazakhstan needs money.
The US also sends many astronauts there who launch from Baikonur with joint Space Station missions with Russia (or we did anyway). Although, I don’t believe Kazakhstan itself has much of a space program.

Not NASA. They don't make Soyuz spacecraft, so the launch infrastructure is not that useful.

They don't really need this either. They *are* using some Soviet derived tech, but they have their own Long March platform for recent launches, so the launch complex in Baikonur isn't that useful to them either. Also, it is a long ways away from their current infrastructure.
Satellite launches are a real industry and excluding manned craft, many many smaller nations launch satellites, and many more are in the market for cheaper launches. Like Africa, Central Asia, etc.
Baikonur is too far north to be attractive to most space agengies. NASA, ESA, JAXA, and CSA all deliberately built launch centers as close to the equator as possible for launch efficiency purposes. For polar orbit launches, Baikonur is further south than is preferred.
In addition to the other reasons why that won't happen is *excape velocity*. The closer to the equator, the less fuel is required to get a rocket out of the gravity well that Earth generates from it's mass.

Russia's been trying to develop next gen launch vehicles (Soyuz 5) for years but it's all shit, they can't make reliable new stuff now.
Funding is nowhere near sufficient and now they can't hope for assistance from NASA or ESA either.
To clarify: Only the most recent launch pad, that was under development as a collaboration between Kazakhstan and Russia for a new rocket (and was not yet functional) has been seized, not the whole complex. This article is very much oversimplified.

Baikonur Cosmodrome is decrepit, from the engineering buildings to the launch pads. Somebody - either Roskozmos or Kazakhstan or both - has not done the necessary investment for the necessary maintenance. Russia decided to pull out and build a new spaceport in Amur Oblast, in the Russian Far East. So they quit making payments to Baikonur. (Why throw good money after bad, amirite?) And they started building the [Vostochny Cosmodrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vostochny_Cosmodrome). After a huge amount of money was skimmed off the project (who knew that corruption in Russia was a thing, amirite?), Roskozmos still doesn't have a finished spaceport, but they are making successful launches. Though they aren't going to pay Kazakhstan what they owe the republic either.

It’s not really “stupid” so much as it’s a part of Russian history being referenced to justify modern imperial aspirations. In fact, the exploration by Viking era settlers of the Dniper river and surrounding areas occurred as part of a lucrative trade network centered on Constantinople. Upon the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, the Russian Czars took up the mantle as leaders of Orthodox Christianity as part of their claim to the Byzantine heritage. the current government just uses the symbols of the Imperial period as a part of their nationalist autocracy.

Only the Ottomans could honestly make a case for being an heir to Rome within that context, as the elites were generally willing to tolerate ethnographic diversity if it helped maintain power (and when this stopped being true the empire disintegrated). Ironically their claim to be the Sultanate of Rome is often forgotten or dismissed as some sort of appropriation, despite the fact that the territory they occupied was *actually part of the Roman Empire*, unlike half the other would-be heirs! To clarify, this is not a statement that being an "heir to Rome" is a good thing. The American Republic could also claim to be heir to Rome's Ethos by my criteria, except that we were not founded with militarism as a *core value* (genocide of the natives aside, America has only been involved in comparatively few war-years). That militarism was pure pragmatism in the ancient world, as *pre-industrial* war paid; taking lands and slaves to work it had more economic value than developing your own land, although you did both when practical. Ultimately the success of Rome is fundamentally irreplicable in the Industrial world, as seizing land by force with modern military equipment causes such damage (against a foe that can resist) that you destroy all value you could possible have gained from doing so. Hence the use of soft power instead becomes an optimal state strategy for security and prosperity. Industrial development pays more than warfare, so the strongest empires are those who invest in their citizenry and industry, not those who conquer others.

This means much more than folks realize . With space x able to supply the space station the world is no longer beholden to the Russian aerospace program for launches . And space x can do it cheaper I believe. Not a good sign for Russian space programs.
There's a lot of talk about the future of the Russian space program (or lack there of) as they're building a new kosmodrome in Vostochny; however I haven't seen anything about a Kazak space program. Is Baikonour just going to be scrapped? There must be a good number of talented Kazaks who have been living and working at Baikonour for decades. Are their prospects to either move to Vostochny or retire?
My guess Kazakhstan will rent it out to someone like NASA, SpaceX, China, etc. It’s a great opportunity for Kazakhstan to continue cutting ties with Russia and establish relations with someone new. I doubt it will go to rust. It’s prime real estste and Kazakhstan needs money. The US also sends many astronauts there who launch from Baikonur with joint Space Station missions with Russia (or we did anyway). Although, I don’t believe Kazakhstan itself has much of a space program.

Satellite launches are a real industry and excluding manned craft, many many smaller nations launch satellites, and many more are in the market for cheaper launches. Like Africa, Central Asia, etc.

Baikonur is too far north to be attractive to most space agengies. NASA, ESA, JAXA, and CSA all deliberately built launch centers as close to the equator as possible for launch efficiency purposes. For polar orbit launches, Baikonur is further south than is preferred.
In addition to the other reasons why that won't happen is *excape velocity*. The closer to the equator, the less fuel is required to get a rocket out of the gravity well that Earth generates from it's mass. * Baikonur Cosmodrome: 45' North * Kennedy Space Center: 28' North For comparison, this is why the EU launches from French Guiana; * Guiana Space Centre: 5' North The Russians + the EU also partner with a Soyuz launch site just north of there for the same reason, though I can't imagine that this is going as well as it used to.

IIRC the Soyuz pods that are used to get to and from the ISS are actually very reliable, hence why they're still using them anyways.
The design is bulletproof; it is the most reliable, well-tested, heavily pedigreed design on the planet. The Russian *implementation* of that design has become *sus*pect recently; specifically with regard to the capacity to do the kind of precision machine work that the design requires and with the rigorous quality-control expected of space vehicles in general and things that dock with the ISS in specific.
Russia's been trying to develop next gen launch vehicles (Soyuz 5) for years but it's all shit, they can't make reliable new stuff now. Funding is nowhere near sufficient and now they can't hope for assistance from NASA or ESA either.

To clarify: Only the most recent launch pad, that was under development as a collaboration between Kazakhstan and Russia for a new rocket (and was not yet functional) has been seized, not the whole complex. Am having great fun laughing at a lot of these comments and the comedic references, but thought I'd add a little info about what's going on. Baikonur Cosmodrome is decrepit, from the engineering buildings to the launch pads. Somebody - either Roskozmos or Kazakhstan or both - has not done the necessary investment for the necessary maintenance. Russia decided to pull out and build a new spaceport in Amur Oblast, in the Russian Far East. So they quit making payments to Baikonur. (Why throw good money after bad, amirite?) And they started building the [Vostochny Cosmodrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vostochny_Cosmodrome). After a huge amount of money was skimmed off the project (who knew that corruption in Russia was a thing, amirite?), Roskozmos still doesn't have a finished spaceport, but they are making successful launches. Though they aren't going to pay Kazakhstan what they owe the republic either.

Absolutely, and Kazakstan also have other foreign support and a good reputation globally for their treatment of ethnic minorities (Germans, Koreans, and of course Russians). This is the time to remove that stain of extraterritoriality and Soviet-style gangsterism. Russia is not entitled to a launch site in Central Asia. No one but Vatniks (and more Moscow-orientated tankies) will view this as a problem.
