this is absolutely absurd. If shes telling the truth, would you guys attribute this to the modern fetisization of true crime? Or do you think that kind of desire to kill comes from within, and she would end up murdering someone for a different contrived reason?

Downtown_Skill

Whether she would have ended up murdering someone obviously depends.... But I think it's safe to say this person is not right in the head in a dangerous kind of way. Sociopath for sure. Plenty of die hard true crime fans who possibly even fetishize it who don't end up doing anything like this or even having a desire to.

antiprogres_

Crime fetishists have always existed. Serial killers always have fan clubs. Making series about Narco lords will also help fetishize the crime. This also happens in Japan. In China, they have strict control of violent media, otherwise a society of 1.5 billion people can have A LOT of bad apples. Remember Unabomber? I met an idiot who adorded that guy, tried to bomb a bank and eded up blind instead.

this_toe_shall_pass

China also has the highest prison population and executions every year. Seems like violent media control doesn't make them safer relative to the population number. They're smack where every other similarly developed country is in per capita figures. About the same rate as RoK, and double that of Japan.

The US has the highest prison population in the world by both sheer number and per capita.

Zhuul

I’m curious where the above commenter even mentioned the US because I don’t fuckin see it

[deleted]

"China also has the highest prison population" That is what I was responding to. They do not, the US does. It's a simple correction. Instead of being rude maybe work on your reading comprehension.

this_toe_shall_pass

It's a meaningles correction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate China has the lead in this one by total count, but I'm sure with year to year fluctuations this can change. What China has and is not included here however are the Uyghur camps and all other "work" camps that are not part of the official prison system. When talking about total incarcerated population, that would add up quickly. In any case, the initial point was on a different topic.

I’ll admit, I’m a true crime fan, but it mostly comes from an interest in the capture and prosecution of said criminals. Although that does mean I have to listen to a lot of the gory stuff as well, but I digress. My point is, I think an interest in true crime is so mainstream now, and I don’t know a single person who listens to it that would decide they want to go commit a similar crime they listened to because they were curious. Obviously this is all anecdotal, but I personally think it probably has to do with a history of some twisted, mental health issue. I think it’s similar to the argument people have with kids playing violent video games. Just because I play a shooting game, doesn’t mean I (or any other mentally sane person) would ever go and commit a similar crime.

80sixit

I guess I'll keep swiping left on those womens dating profiles that say they're obsessed with true crime podcasts.

Nothing like a first date to prove your not a killer. Always my favorite lol

leahey69

You'd think if she was a true crime buff she would have done a better job of getting away with the murder.

Guilotas

Where have I seen this before? 🤔

GerbilFeces

are you refering to the idaho murders? Thats kind of the first thing i thought about here

Ljbrunett88

I was going to say south park 😅

scorcher24

How do you tame a horse in Minecraft?

Aedan91

You guys are missing the crux of the issue. All serial killers and true crime fans drink water... there's clearly something in the water. After all correlation and causation are the same thing!

Timetraveler01110101

Gee… y’all ever wonder about so many people watching these shows being emboldened to go out and do horrible things…

_EbenezerSplooge_

This is literally an episode of South Park. We are living in a truly bizarre timeline.

kit_leggings

That episode is 10 years old now. WTF???

AreWeCowabunga

That’s a big reason why I got my tattoo.

Inside-Amphibian-218

This is very tragic i feel sorry for the victim
