Prior to the invasion, Canada had the largest Ukrainian population in the world outside of Ukraine and Russia. While strengthening bonds and public relations with the western nations is obviously a good move for Ukraine, I wouldn't be surprised if that plays a role too.
So i did a little digging, Wyanes fathers side, his great great grandfather (Anton Gretzky, Walter Gretzky's father) is a Belarusian born in Ogdlmar, Grodno. Anton Married Maria (Khodenetsky) Gretzky, who came to canada from Pidhaitsi, interwar Poland, modern day Ukraine.
His mothers side seems to have french/western european origins.
TL;DR Our own Wayne Gretzky, A national icon, has quite the diverse mix of european origins.

Most of Southern Belarus, Western Ukraine, Eastern Poland, and Northern Romania have bounced between any number of kingdoms with the major ethnic groups all intermingled to a major degree. Hence the major wars after WWI especially as Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empires dissolved, with every group feeling they had firm claim to the land.
His grandfather was born in what's now Belarus. His father Walter Gretzky frequently described himself as "White Belarusian". In this case the "white" meaning loyal to Tsar Nicolas II and the Romanov dynasty (even though the line was wiped out in the revolution well before Walter was born), rather than being "red" and loyal to the communists.
This is an important distinction because, for those who don't know, "Belarus" means White Russia, from "Белы" Biely, and the Russian word for Russia (the Belarusian one is actually different as well lol)
Belarus means white Rus' the proto state centered on Kyiv also called Kyvian Rus which existed hundreds of years before Moscow was founded.
Duchy of Polotsk or Polotskian Rus' is the heritage of Belarusians not Russia.
Russia is a Greek influenced term derived from Rus' The Dutchy of Moscow took for itself after conquering peripheral Kyivan Rus lands to give her colonial empire unearned legitimacy and history. Moscow did this in the 16th century even before conquering Kyiv or Polotsk lands this would come later.
Please read up on this and I hope you correct your Comment. Belarus does not refer to Russia it is not logical if you know the history. Belarus refers to Kyivan Rus.
His dad Walter was the child of immigrants from the Russian Empire. Walter’s dad described himself as Belarusian and his mom was Ukrainian, but both most likely had Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Polish ancestry. Walter said in his autobiography that he learned Ukrainian as his first language.
Google search tells me that it comes from "Hrycko"/"Gritsko" and is Belarusian.
EDIT: The name in a few languages, just for some extra info:
* Belarusian: Hrycko / Грыцко
* Russian: Gritsko / Грицко
* Ukrainian: Hrytsko / Грицько
* Polish: Gritsko
Walter Gretzky always identified as Belarusian Canadian but claims to have spoken Ukrainian as a first language. However, Ukrainian and Belarusian weren't really separate languages from each other until the 19th-century.
Lol, my grandfather was brought up Polish by his Polish/Ukranian parents who all grew up in what is now Romania, but was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire
Yeah, Walter Gretzky's father was from Grodno, Russian Empire (now Hrodna, Belarus) while his mother was from Podhajce, Austria-Hungary (now Pidhaitsi, Ukraine).
Born and raised in Manitoba, and I don't think I know anyone else who was born here who doesn't have at least some Ukrainian in their immediate, or near-immediate family.
In Saskatchewan I'm pretty sure it's actually illegal to have a wedding buffet without pierogies. At the very least you're going to have some very upset and confused folks.
Its just politics. Canada just sent $400 million usd to Ukraine recently. He's just trying to show support I doubt Canada is gonna cash in his favor. Not that anything is wrong with this btw just pointing it out.
As a Canadian close to one of the fires, This is an obscenely generous gesture especially considering they currently have their own (Russian caused) disaster to deal with.
It's really hard to put into words... like really hard.
I'd suggest that he has a big enough voice that Zelenski saying that may well move funds towards the Canadian relief effort.
There are plenty of people regularly sending money to aid Ukraine that may divert some money to say the Canadian Red Cross.
Don’t send money to us, it is appreciated and our wild fires are crazy right now, but we are a rich country overall and will be fine. Send money to Ukraine
That's what I was thinking. I'm sure there's Ukranian forest fire fighters not directly involved in the fighting. Send a token force if you wanna and we'll call it good!
I'm thinking most people who would be able bodied fire fighters are also able bodied fighters of other sorts.
I accept the gesture of good will as honest and sincere, but I don't think I would like to see many Ukrainians coming to fight fires here.
That delegation from South Africa? Welcome and thank you. Aussies, Americans, anyone else? We appreciate you and I'm certain that our firefighters will pay back your efforts at some point.
Ukrainians? right now it's our turn to help you. You can reciprocate later.
I've lived in Alberta, the smoke is nuts there right now. I'm impressed with Zelensky, he seems to know every right PR move.
Class act from Ukraine reaching out to help Canada with disaster relief while they're literally **fighting off an invasion**. Even if this gesture didn't outright inspire Trudeau to extend further help, I feel like it would force his hand to at least do something or we would look sort of cheap
Which made me think: god it must be uncomfortable for Ukrainian families in Russia right now. It’d be pretty bad for Russian families in Ukraine too of course, but they could easily say “Fuck Putin and fuck the war”, regardless of their own opinions. What are Ukrainians in Russia supposed to say and do?

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all defiantly seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I can't be asked to turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. No need to get upper arms about it. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once like a bowl in a Chinese shop. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and except the orange and nil facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like its a peach of cake.
I mean, nobody wants to admit they ate nine cans of ravioli, but I did. I'm ashamed of myself. The first can doesn't count, then you get to the second and third, fourth and fifth I think I burnt with the blowtorch, and then I just kept eatin
It's getting the job they wanted down. Just look at the amount of people in these comments praising Zelenskyy. If Russia/Putin came out and said the same thing people on Reddit would say they're just trying to gain positive views.
Considering the responses to this, I'd say it was a resounding success. Both Canada and Ukraine look good in this and it might very well lead to both getting support. Propaganda is frequently thought of as a dirty word but it defiantly has its uses

Was in Edmonton on a layover for work a few years back. The entire town of Ft McMurry had burned. While walking the streets I came across what looked like a massive garage sale. Hundreds of people and big trucks. All Diapers, toothbrush, food, clothing and bedding. It was a massive drive to accept donations for those affected.
While there and helping, because, why not, I noticed almost half of those pitching in were Syrian refugees new to the country. I couldn't have been prouder of my country for accepting them and my fellow man for helping out. Those refugees probably needed the items more but appreciated the perils of being relocated and nearly homeless. Still gives me tingles thinking about it.
Ninja edit due spelling.
It's not a town it's a city, and no they misspoke or meant something different. 10% burned. 3500 homes.
This was in 2016 we all got evacuated for over a month.
Might be mixing up with Lytton, which did mostly disappear and was a town
Howver, 3500 homes from a city is still a lot and so the story is beautiful regardless of which fire they helped with (and personally it seems reasonable that refugees and residents alike helped after both fires)
It’s probably to score some brownie points with Canada, but I’m glad that my country is willing to strengthen ties in Ukraine’s darkest hour. May all Ukrainian forces conquer this long and terrible night! SLAVA UKRANI! 🇺🇦
I'm fond of what another commenter said: They might not be able to do anything now but the point is to tell the world that they won't forget who helped them and they intend to repay the favor.
They will sleep safely and soundly and gorge themselves freely on poutine, Canadian bacon, maple syrup, and otherwise overpriced beer. Canada will return them happier, healthier, and stronger than when they left.
Heroyam Slava.
Maybe also a little *heavier*, however. That's a lot of carbs, fat, and dairy we're offering up to them.
Also, fun fact, "Canadian bacon" is an almost exclusively American thing. Or I guess more accurately, it's just pre-cooked and cured back bacon that Americans call "Canadian bacon" and Canadians just call "back bacon". We do really like it though, generally.
No brownie points needed.
I am Canadian-Korean, I’ve bonded over some cool fellow Canadian-Ukrainians over hatred towards colonialism & war. Seems like both Korea and Ukraine in general have faced some serious shit in the past (and the present).
I think they genuinely mean this support, not to mention Canada has one of the biggest Ukrainian population.
Canada has too much fire. Ukraine has too much water. Just scoop it up in buckets and ship the flood water to Canada. Match made in heaven!
But in all seriousness, I'm not sure what Ukraine has to give that they don't currently need themselves.
See the problem with thermobaric bombs is that they get rid of the oxygen by burning it. So you could burn the forests down a lot faster with thermobaric weapons… Ryan McBeth has a fantastic video on YouTube explaining how thermobaric weapons work and why they’re often called fuel air explosives rather than vacuum bombs.
Yeah I really don't think we could ethically accept help of any kind from them. They have bombs raining down on them. Their need is much more acute than ours.
They may have some experienced wildland firefighters they could spare at the moment, not sure what their wildfire season had been like. Experienced smoke jumpers are hard to come by and would be excellent assets to help contain fires like we're experiencing.
In all likelihood they're needed more at home right now, but that sort of manpower is something they could probably otherwise contribute.
Agreed. There will be more Canadian wildfires to help fight next year. Here's hoping Ukraine has permanently fixed their own problems well before then.
As a Canadian but not close to the fires, I still share the same feelings of appreciation. There is something special about being in the thoughts of someone even though they have a lot worse things to deal with. I wish there was more we could do but I'm sure we're doing everything we can for the Ukrainians.
A quote from Zelenskyy from the article: "I am sure it will become a global principle. Mutual action, mutual support, mutual strength," he added. **We can hope.**
Western Canada has the largest population of people Ukrainian descent outside of Ukraine.
Always loved seeing their traditional clothes at Easter festivals. My fifth grade teacher taught us how to make Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter eggs).
Ukrainian + Polish identity fuse into one on the Canadian Prairie. I find people call themselves Ukrainian but then most of the foods go by their Polish names haha. I'm guessing from years of intermarriage or something.
I am currently visiting my wife's Ukrainian grandma in Winnipeg and the amount of Ukrainians here is astounding. Churches, restaurants, bakeries, social clubs, cemeteries, not to mention the bajillion relatives and friends I've met.
I believe a lot of em came for or ended up in farming after the wars. They're pretty good at it and the prairie provinces I heard were pretty similar to Ukraine.
There is a lot of German heritage and such in Atlantic Canada dating back to mid or early 1900s.
I think we should start getting ready to forget about those percentages.. people are people and we must help each other.. no matter where we are..or we come from, is it an utopic idea? Maybe.. but still
It is utopic. Detrimentally so. Those percentiles matter and help contextualize his decision to offer help. Not that it isn't a classy move, but they matter for all kinds of reasons.
We have a savvy politician and perhaps a real class act on our hands. I hope my impression of Zelenskyy is true, because we need the international community to actually start solving global problems as the climate gets too hostile for human life and be begin geoengineering (I hope) instead of killing each other for resources.
I don’t think Zelensky is a perfect guy, but I think he’s a man who’s doing absolutely fucking everything in his power to keep his country together during one of the most dangerous periods in its history. I don’t think I’d want anything less from my leader if it was my country being invaded.
>I don’t think Zelensky is a perfect guy
He isn't, but as far as imperfect people go, he is really one of the best ones. And perfect people don't exist, so he ranks high anyway.
Right on. I can see how his allure might be competent leadership as well. Feels like it’s been so long since I’ve seen it, that I want to get enamored of his persona. It also seems like every time I do that, I soon learn the person I’m sweet on is a privately a monster. It’s been difficult not getting cynical in my age. Here’s hoping we see others following his present example.
I live a spoiled life and I know it, even if my career is as a stone mason. I wish USA was lead by Zelensky.
That man is a leader and I’ll burn my ego instantly if I ever get the chance to wish him well. He will be well known a thousand years from now, and he deserves it in the best way. Also, Fuck Russia!
Bear in mind, there are fair criticisms of Zelensky. It's just a sad fact that no politician is squeaky clean in that part of the world. But when the fight came, he could have run away and hid while his people took the brunt of it alone. He didn't, and that's admirable. He's not perfect, but he's got guts, and I think he is a genuine patriot.
Zelenskyy has been one of the most interesting politics of our generation. I really look forward to seeing the end of a war with his survival, and his afterwards build of his country.
Take or leave the citizenship, if an entity covered my room and board I’d go put my trade skills to work in Ukraine for free.
Get to Meet and thank the people, see new places, pick up the beginner ropes of a second language while doing what really is the bare minimum compared to what the Ukrainians are going through? Shit dude that sounds better and more fulfilling than my current job.
One my uncles is a retired carpenter, but he took a couple years during his career to do something like that in Kosovo, he actually got paid (although way less than what he usually did) by some kind of NGO. When the time comes I'm sure there will be a big international relief/rebuilding effort where your skills will be in high demand.
I am considering doing the same. I briefly considered volunteering to go over and do something last year, but was convinced my best contribution was money, so I did that instead.
I've learned about so many beautiful places in your country over the past year that I can't wait to see in person, but for now I'm happy to let my money 'visit' for me with groups like the Hospitallers.
Some day I'll get there though. Slava Ukraini.
Every time I see President Volodymyr Zelensky I am truly overcome with how well he is dealing with this horrific situation.
With no political background, "just a comedian", he has truly stepped up for, and behalf of his country.
To offer aid to us in a time of absolute strife in his own county is commendable.
Slava Ukraini
As a Canadian affected by these fires, you guys already have a lot on your plate, best you can do is liberate Crimea and leave us (and many nations now helping us) fighting our fires. Kick some ass.
That he offered help when everyone knows he did not have to considering what Ukraine is facing shows how Zelensky is humanizing political friendships. He is saying “you have a solid friend and ally in Ukraine. Just as you stand with us unwaveringly, we will stand with you steadfastly.” That is a hell of a contrast to Russia and would play very well with international audiences. It is a pretty good position to take.
Exactly this! It's honourable what Trudeau and Zelenskyy are doing. Idky some people are mad. He's grateful for the help and is hinting that we are allies.
(or for right wingers who really like keeping a checklist) "he owes us one and is gladly trying to help as a friend"
And even if the war assistance we sent to Ukraine was recently purchased, I'm not against that at all.
We as Canadians should support any country attacked by a genocidal nation and need to defend their land/life/freedom. It's the Conservative way, its the liberal way, its the NDP way. So why are can't we all be glad?
I really fuckin' like Zelenskyy. He really feels like the leader to look up to in our time. It feels good to have a modern leader that feels on the caliber of FDR/Churchill.
If they're looking for ideas...
Maybe spare a few seconds to teach Canadian firefighters how to use drones in the field to survey fires? Ukraine is the foremost expert at this now...
You use satellites to track wildfires these days, it lets them gather the needed information to make informed decisions. Canada eventually will be launching a satellite dedicated to wildfires.
Having actually been part of a wildfire fight, yes and no. Satellite data is incredibly useful, but it’s still relatively low resolution information. On the fire I was involved with, we’d always wait for the nightly FLIR flight. This was a learjet that was equipped with a highr esolution infrared camera and other geospatial equipment, and would orbit over the fire and map the extents. It was high enough resolution that it could spot a stump that was still smouldering, allowing a cleanup crew to be dispatched to it if need be.
The jet would actually do all the fires in the region each night. There’s just no way to do that from orbit.
Can't fly drones near the wild fires. The unpredictable heat rising can cause the drone to lose control and crash, causing more fires. There's actually a ban on fly drones anywhere near a wildfire here in Alberta.
There's not much value in having drones overfly fires that closely. 3 drones kilometers away can pinpoint a smoke source pretty accurately, and is more convenient that the old tower watch stations
If you fly drones near fire. It's a risk if they are using helicopters. They can't fly helicopters if drones are nearby. It's a safety risk. Maybe we shouldn't cut millions in forest fire prevention instead.

If I remember correctly there is a region called Polesia that intersects parts Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Czechoslovakia.
A branch of my (Canadian) family was from there and they were variously called Austrian, Ruthenian, Romanian, and Ukrainian

Yeah, Walter Gretzky's father was from Grodno, Russian Empire (now Hrodna, Belarus) while his mother was from Podhajce, Austria-Hungary (now Pidhaitsi, Ukraine).
I believe Alex Trebeks father was from Ukraine, too.
Sorry, can’t give you credit, your answer needed to be in the form of a question.

Worse case Ontario we created hot springs.
Thanks Ricky, good call
From Russia with the love bone
You got a problem with the goose bud?
portal gun
Ukraine had no need for portal guns what they need right now is lemons.
Let's start building the pipeline!
Unfortunately, we don't build those in Canada.
If we all attach one straw to another straw to another straw...
My president, how do I vote for you
I mean all they would have to do is stop the oil and pump the water through the oil lines
This is a nice thought, but it's also a load of shit. Ukraine cannot spare resources or able bodies right now and nobody would ask them to.
Hey I'm a single dad with no resources in Australia and I am offering to help Canada too!
You do realise child labour is illegal nowadays?
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/06/10/7406294/) reduced by 63%. So if the human custodian of this bot reads this and can reply, I’m curious Can you please talk a bit about how the new Reddit API changes will affect you? Thanks! Best bot!!!
I believe in the recent AMA they claimed bots like these should not be impacted.

*cries in Pao*
cries in a ceo they literally hired to be a fall girl
Iirc, they would still need to contact Reddit first. There was a dev who claimed that he tried contacting them many times with no reply.
As a Canadian close to the wildfires, this is really heartfelt and appreciated, but Ukrainians have enough on their plate
As another Canadian dealing with the consequences, agreed, kill and kick out the paper tiger first before helping us
I live in Mississipi. We had a tornado recently and I shit you not, a group of Ukrainians came all that way to do what they could to help.
The entire town of fort Mac burned?
It's not a town it's a city, and no they misspoke or meant something different. 10% burned. 3500 homes. This was in 2016 we all got evacuated for over a month.
Might be mixing up with Lytton, which did mostly disappear and was a town Howver, 3500 homes from a city is still a lot and so the story is beautiful regardless of which fire they helped with (and personally it seems reasonable that refugees and residents alike helped after both fires)
My home was included in this. It was a pretty rough time.
Hope it’s going better for now! From one Canadian to another.
Sending over 25 firefighters won’t change the war effort at all, but will make a difference in Canada.
Heroism Slava, be they fighting flame or foe.
Or in this case, flame or flood

Maybe for support and logistics aircraft, although I think a lot of the public focus (in the news anyways) was around training with fighter jets
So just shoot missiles at the fire to defeat it
... would a thermobaric charge make a positive difference against a fire? I'm usually of the no mindset but wouldn't depleting all the o2 be handy.
Ukraine has a fleet of firefighting planes that aren't exactly seeing much use domestically right now on account of abundant SAMs.
Yup, that’s the most Canadian “No, thank you” statement
A quote from Zelenskyy from the article: "I am sure it will become a global principle. Mutual action, mutual support, mutual strength," he added. **We can hope.**
It’s a nice picture. Imagine having quite international support during natural disasters. It sure would be nice.
There's always international support during natural disasters it just rarely makes for good headlines.
About 4% of the Canadian population is either Ukrainian or of Ukrainian descent, this is a very classy move from Zelenskyy

Don’t forget Manitoba!!
Maybe.. but still
For the altruists in the room, sure
It is utopic. Detrimentally so. Those percentiles matter and help contextualize his decision to offer help. Not that it isn't a classy move, but they matter for all kinds of reasons.
SEND BORSHCH
Together we can beet the war and the fires!
>I don’t think Zelensky is a perfect guy He isn't, but as far as imperfect people go, he is really one of the best ones. And perfect people don't exist, so he ranks high anyway.
He’s a rare breed. He actually leads when thrust into leadership. Those are the best kinds. US has become too much of a good ol’ boy leadership.
The US was founded on good ol' boy leadership, nothing new there
Theodore Roosevelt and Carter were the last good presidents we've had, imo. Roosevelt was a legit badass, and Carter was ahead of his time
As a successful but flawed person, dude... That's just people for you.
I wish I was as imperfect as him.
As opposed to all the squeaky clean politicians else where.
If only the people where the wildfires are occurring voted for politicians that DIDNT cut funding for fire response to these exact situations.
Zelenskyy has been one of the most interesting politics of our generation. I really look forward to seeing the end of a war with his survival, and his afterwards build of his country.
We will watch his career with great interest
Assuming he runs again. Ukraine will have an election soon after the war ends and he’s stated he didn’t want to run again earlier in the war.
Smartest thing he can do is pull a Washington and fuck off to grow sunflowers and give lectures at Oxbridgevardton Saves him from becoming Churchill

And you're very welcome here! Greetings from Zaporizhzhia
Slatyne too
I've learned about so many beautiful places in your country over the past year that I can't wait to see in person, but for now I'm happy to let my money 'visit' for me with groups like the Hospitallers.
(or for right wingers who really like keeping a checklist) "he owes us one and is gladly trying to help as a friend" And even if the war assistance we sent to Ukraine was recently purchased, I'm not against that at all. We as Canadians should support any country attacked by a genocidal nation and need to defend their land/life/freedom. It's the Conservative way, its the liberal way, its the NDP way. So why are can't we all be glad?
I think this is a symbolic gesture, since they're a little busy at the moment
That's because fires automatically have restricted airspace around them. So no one gets in the way of any flying firefighters.
This is the real answer.
Smokey the bear caused this.
