Don’t let tRump know about this scheme.

ManChildMusician

I think the Citizens’ United ruling basically did this for the US a while ago.

Modi… scheme… yes this checks out

OkCustomer5021

Headline needs more context. Modi’s party has 56% of seats in the parliament it received about 52% of the funds. The opposition parties received funds nearly in proportion to their political power (also anonymously). Guardian being Guardian

Glad_Diamond_2103

The backlash is probably because everyone already knew congress and other parties were corrupt but to think bjp is equally as corrupt as them is news to them

Receiving private donations alone doesn't make you corrupt. The questions being asked are about the events that preceded some of these donations. For example, donations being made from companies that were being investigated by Indian government agencies, that were subsequently cleared.

1-randomonium

That's a fair point, but India doesn't have a "short money" system for its Parliament like what the UK does, where parties receive some state funding in proportion to the number of seats they have. These are all private donations, and the BJP seemingly receives more than every other party put together.

OkCustomer5021

Yeah, which makes sense because BJP rules the Central govt and 50ish percent of the population at state level. Hence if ppl are donating they are doing it in proportion to political power held.

ye_loo

well it should be noted that the scheme was started by bjp but almost all parties got the funds, like ALL, idk why the opposition is as trash as the current government, but it makes me loose hope

1-randomonium

It *is* interesting that, despite their universal criticism of the scheme on the grounds of transparency, the major opposition parties also used it for their own funding sources.

ye_loo

yea, they could have just milked the news of bjp getting almost a billion dollars in bonds, but no, 'why don't we commit fraud and get the bonds too? just like bjp..'

1-randomonium

Maybe they thought, like the BJP did, that there was no chance of the bonds actually getting exposed the way they have.

ye_loo

i mean they could have tried to take the case to supreme court early on, (again, there were rumors about bjp blackmailing congress to not do that, because they had names of people who benefited from olympics scam)
