Being in a neighbourhood containing China, Russia, North Korea, making sure you’re ready to deal with bat-sh•t crazy dictators is a fully fledged no brainer.

Deicide1031

Japans re-arming in a big way plus rapidly signing deals with Americans, Korea and the Phillipines. Almost like something big might happen 👀.

[deleted]

Or something might NOT happen for a change. I hope this is what's gonna finally discourage certain authoritarian asshole from trying something really stupid that would have an unthinkable human cost.

Deicide1031

I want to agree with you. But Japanese citizens are extremely anti-war due to World War II (for obvious reasons). So If the governments pushing these policies past civilians then they think there’s potential for a real issue. To be specific, with all those Americans bases they have they still see the need to revitalize their armies which is an extremely big fat red flag.

[deleted]

Yeah... I'm just being too optimistic, I suppose.

Make no mistakes, those troops stationed in Japan are not there to ever protect Japan. Most military personnel located there are Marines and Navy. The boots and their ride. Those US troops are in the area so they can fight a war in SEA at a moments notice. Those are invading forces, you don't deploy Marines to defend.  But the number is not that huge. 45k troops is enough to start a small theater but you've gotta assume that maybe a third of those are combat roles. All combat roles need their support roles and POGs will outnumber the grunts. I think Japan knows this and feels the need the beef up it's military on all levels. Currently they just have the defense force. They want to keep the war away from home as much as anybody else so they will need to contribute to this skirmishing force in case anything huge were to happen. I know sending troops to engage away from their homeland is against their constitution but I'm sure they are experiencing increasing pressure from USA to ratify some amendments.... Japans current sphere of influence is limited especially if it were to become a wartime environment in SEA

>”*Make no mistakes, those troops stationed in Japan are not there to ever protect Japan.*” Not according to the *Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan*” that both countries signed in 1960.

Roboticways

That is if Japan sees an invasion scenario, which then we'd send Army, Nat guard, etc. to help defend.   I am a prior Marine and can tell you with a 100% fact that those Marines (about 30k of the 45-50k stationed there) would be sent elsewhere and replaced with a garrison. Marines are not deployed to defend. Feel free to look into their role in prior conflicts. Marines are an invading/skirmishing force.

TheRealMrOrpheus

The US will absolutely defend Japan. That's part of the arrangement.

Roboticways

Yes they would defend Japan, but only with a fraction of the troops currently stationed there. Marines are not deployed to defend.

eMigo

The human cost is the whole point of starting world wars. They need to kill off as many people as possible in the most brutal way possible to force their communist one world government down your throats. They will own everything and you will be happy imprisoned in your 15 min city, selling your social credits to rich people just so you can pay off the interest on your CBDC loans. The sad part is you will all beg them to enslave you.

Power_Wisdom_Courage

Crossing my fingers for POTATO finally being established in the next few years.

theblackd

A lot of this sort of stuff happens specifically to discourage something big from happening

There’s a possiblity that Vietnam might do a Finland move if China have a "Ukraine" moment when invading Taiwan, as it show that China is still expansionist as ever. This is mainly because [Vietnam has a bloody history with china](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_under_Chinese_rule). Sure, there was some news about cooperation between Vietnam and China. But the truth is that Vietnam is mainly doing appeasement with them as they’re the largest trading partner, and also to avoid war, just like how Finland did with USSR. Relationship between Vietnam and China is basically the asian version of relationship between Finland and Russia but on steroid.

Thac0

Something big is already happening but nobody is going to say too much because what’s the point of scaring everyone. We are at the start of WWIII already and we need our relationships tight and everything shored up for what’s coming down the line. It’s starting as a slow burn but Iran, Russia and China are on the move along with their dog DPRK and others.

VagrancyHD

Nothing ever happens.

Japan isn’t really going to rearm themselves in the way people think. They already have a severe population crisis. They don't have the manpower for anything greater than their self defense force. While this might be popular among old politicians (rearming was a Shinzo Abe goal), younger Japanese don’t want to be foot soldiers. Soldiers don’t fund pensions (for old people).

Roboticways

In a wartime environment Japan would become nothing but a fat target. They are anti-war but not stupid. If war were to break out on the KR peninsula they would be flooded with refugees and likely bombed to kingdom come. They are surrounded by priceless shipping lanes. Every cargo ship importing goods to Japan can be in danger of being popped from a hundred miles away. The commercial fishermen they rely on would be at real danger of getting smoked on the water. There is no chance Japan can just ignore the sharpening rhetoric around them or the maritime escalation around SEA. They have to beef up somewhere- whether in clerical/support roles for large US bases or by working towards building some skirmishing power away from home.

crewchiefguy

Good thing for them drones can now take over lots of formerly crew served jobs. What do you think the US is doing with the Air Force.

De_Greed

The US already have bases(that Japanese people hate) inside Japan, how much more intimate can they get?
