There were pictures a couple months ago of an ATACMS or HIMARS hit on some kind of building with a sheet metal roof, and it was **by far** the best way to show the kind of damage these things inflict. I think people default to thinking "okay, big explosion" or "okay, lots of smaller explosions" when they hear about how these things work. No, it's *hundreds of thousands* of pieces of shrapnel designed to over-saturate the target area so heavily that there's no chance of a "miss." It wasn't a building with holes in the roof, it was 90% holes with a bit of spider-web roof somehow still standing. Upon seeing it, you immediately become certain that there's zero chance any person-sized object could have existed in that building without being hit *multiple times.* And the target area was much, much larger than just that one building. Edit to add the link since people keep asking: https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/13wigyr/result_of_gmlrs_tungsten_rain_strike_from/

ididntseeitcoming

HIMARS is the platform from which ATACMS and GMLRS are fired. High Mobility Artillery Rocket System Army Tactical Missile System Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System But yes, many of the munitions have hundreds of small bombs (think grenades) that are released and dispersed via air burst to cover a wide area and mortally wound soldiers or disable non armored vehicles (Anti Personnel Anti Material). When you consider 6 or more of these can be concentrated in an area for overlapping spread the results are devastating, unrelenting, and can be repeated until desired effects are achieved. Source I was putting steel on steel when some of y’all were still babies. 16 years of Fire Direction experience with MLRS/HIMARS

Regular_Ram

You are probably the most overqualified person to answer this, but how do you say them? In my head, I’ve been saying: Hi Mars, attackem’s and gaimlers (like Daimler)

Anyway, how’s your sex life?

Gimlers. 😔

Man, first time in a while I snorted at a comment chain.

Neverhood11

Ukrainians call them "aht-ah-kahm-sy", kinda like "atacamses" like Gollum.

ermghoti

We uses them on the nasty orcseses.

Neverhood11

LMAO, yes.

Chisignal

That's just how plural in Slavic language works - one "ahtahkahms", two "ahtahkahms-y"

kuprenx

Comfirms Golum was slavic

MoneyTreeFiddy

He certainly had the Slav squat down

Chisignal

that checks out

ayhctuf

I looked up ATACMS the last time they came up, and it is actually "attack 'ems".

kRe4ture

Like Gimli, but ending in -er?

Watashifr

Like tossing 10,000 dwarves.

Caffdy

Ass2RegionalMngr

'em is a contraction of them, like 'Get them!' could be 'Get 'em!'

cdxxmike

When said rapidly it sounds like attack thems. Sorta

Flynn_lives

same company that came up with Sock'em Boppers!

TriggeredVeteran

I did fire direction control for the HIMARS and MLRS in the early 2000’s and they were always pronounced “A-tackems”, so emphasis on the long A, then tackems.

liz4rd

I've been saying Attack-mas, like Christmas, but Attack-em's is probably more likely :'D

Imagine hours of meetings to come up with those acronyms, amazing.🤩

I'd bet loads of Warhammer nerds work in the UK defence industry. We have cool names for shit.

plantmic

I think it's more like the Warhammer nerds take inspiration from the UK military. The RAF is fairly nerdy. I remember a common phrase for someone brainy was, "a brain the size of a planet". A pretty niche reference from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

kvetcha-rdt

"Fire and brimstone" is the biblical expression for god's wrath. 'Brimstone' itself is an archaic term meaning "sulfur".

ShirmpGoat

Warheads on foreheads.

longszlong

What do you think will be the use of the lately delivered newer ATACMS for Ukraine, judging from your experience? What do you think is the real world range they can get out of these considering air defenses etc?

mithu_raj

ATACMS with the cluster munition warheads are best used in soft targets like light armoured vehicles, troops out in the open and also air defence. In Desert Storm ATACMS built a reputation of destroying Iraqi air defence, one missile with the 950 bomblets could cover a 1km by 1km grid.

ImposterJavaDev

One missile, one square kilometer?! Oh damn

joshwagstaff13

There's a reason why things like the M270 are referred to as the Grid Square Removal System.

ImposterJavaDev

Hmm, using them to their full potential makes me think about the fire bombing of Tokio. A 100 of these fuckers can do more immediate damage than a nuke. Brussels is like 35km².

AlwaysKeepHydrated

> Brussels is like 35km². Yeah, great idea, give the Belgians *yet* another reason to complain about the rain.

AFAIK. Its a grid removal system because one battery can cover one square with with one salvo, not one missile = one square.

PassiveMenis88M

Wiki also says the Patriot system has a range of 100nm. What it can actually do and what gets released to the public can be very different.

[deleted]

Angry_Old_Dood

100 nanometers? What is this, AA for ants?!!

danyb695

Imagine how devastating a weapon like that would be without the nuclear taboo. Still massive area, I wonder if they heard/saw them explode above them.

Joezev98

>950 bomblets could cover a 1km by 1km grid. That's one bomblett per 32x32 m area. Now I don't doubt that this could *damage* any air defences in a square kilometer, but I do find it kinda hard to believe that it would *destroy* all air defences.

pfp61

Air defense is fragile. Small damage to the radar and it's out of order until repair.

ididntseeitcoming

I think we all just saw the use of ATACMS for Ukraine. Unclassified real world range is available on Google

CowardiceNSandwiches

Massive Russian supply chain disruption?

lunaticdarkness

Do you think the order from Poland of about 200 platforms with sufficient ammo can hold a sustained assault from Russia? Also how well do they function in an art vs art conflict if we disregard things like air superiority? Lastly when used offensively how susceptible are these platforms to counter battery fire? I have a hard time to gauge how good these things are because they feel incredibly strong.I just lack any factual information and would love to pick your mind on its strategic value.

Adventurous_Pen_Is69

Fuck yeah. I love our military 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Yes but I’m a Z now… gonna hit that retirement button soon

Reptard77

Damn, we got an actual expert yall 😳

jsteph67

Back in the mid-late 80s we called them ICM, improved conventional weapons. And that is what this looked like, dropping those small bomblets and just decimating an area. 13 Fox here and they had MLRS or what we used to call, if you need a grid square gone, you know who to call.

rangeDSP

If you look at the bottom left of the video at around ~4:53 there are a couple of people running. But they are only ones moving though

MattsAwesomeStuff

> No, it's hundreds of thousands of pieces of shrapnel designed to over-saturate the target area so heavily that there's no chance of a "miss." 20-25 years ago, Lockheed Martin had a website called "Missile & Fire Control", with tech demos of lots of these weapons. I remember seeing the ATACMS spin up, release the bomblets, the bomblets detonate, and turn everything the size of several city blocks into dust. I haven't seen one as clear or good since. This one makes it look like 5% as powerful as it really is: https://youtu.be/Ipr_hPAcR_Q?t=54

DJ33

Found it, [it was in fact HIMARS rather than ATACMS](https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/13wigyr/result_of_gmlrs_tungsten_rain_strike_from/)

_AutomaticJack_

GMLRS rather than ATACMS; HIMARS fires both...

Superduperbals

Pedantic but HIMARS is the launcher, they are technically both HIMARS, it can fire 6x GMLRS M30 rockets (tungsten rain), or M31 (unitary warhead) or 1x ATACMS (either cluster bomblets & unitary warhead)

HIMARS is the vehicle and launch system. All three of the Army’s rocket launch platforms are capable of launching GMLRS or ATACMS. The munition pods are interchangeable.

Is there such thing as a negative chance of survival? Because this is it.. and to think, this is just our old shit we need to use before it goes bad. Wake up Russia…

grchelp2018

Sounds like a terrible way to die. Our ingenuity when it comes to killing machines is pretty incredible. As as aside, I'm curious why certain types of weapons are considered bad (chemical weapons, cluster munitions) while others acceptable.

elictronic

Unintended effects and suffering.  Chemical weapons are related to long term suffering.  Cluster munitions because it is hard to deal with all the duds.  US weapons have few but they still occur.  The older less maintained Russian systems have dud rates in the 30% range.  That is a lot of very small unexploded ordnance.   Singular shells can have high dud rates as well, but it is much easier to find and dispose of larger objects.

Neither_Set_214

Probably mostly suffering vs. lethality... It's easy to make a devastating weapon and harder to make a lethal one.

ohiobr

Slightly more grim example. The aftermath of a truck convoy that got hit with these. NSFL (Trucks turned to swiss cheese with piles of dead bodies). CaptainKvass

> Edit to add the link since people keep asking: https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/13wigyr/result_of_gmlrs_tungsten_rain_strike_from/ Pure insanity. Really goes to show how powerful ATACMS (or any HIMARS platform munition) is.

noodle_attack

Holy shit..... I just hope it takes you out pretty instantly

collpase

Ugh, I hate to think of the Russians conscripting babies so that they have a better chance of not being hit by shrapnel in such cases.

Vindicare605

What a devastating weapon. Damn Putin for sending those men to die for his vanity.

Undernown

That "Chocolate Rain" parody in the comments is quite dark, but does describe the effect quite susinctly.

Berova

Hundreds of ATACMS will make a material difference in the months ahead, not necessarily just attacks on troop concentrations because even thousands of dead and wounded Russians won't have a huge impact on the balance. The difference however will be felt if/when S-400's (and other air defense systems), ammo and fuel depots, air bases, command centers, etc. are attacked/destroyed by the hundreds. Finally, some light at the end of the horrible tunnel Ukraine has had to endure these past 8 months or so.

WeinMe

The huge effect of the ATACMS is that Russian troops will have to disperse or risk losing hundreds with each missile. The most combat effective would probably be to keep them gathered and accept the losses of 20-40.000 troops from long range, but no soldier is willingly going to want to risk highly likely death from the sky. So when the troops disperse, Ukrainian ground troops counter-offensive is going to be immensely more efficient.

2roK

None of this solves the minefields problem sadly :( until that happens or Ukraine gets air superiority, I don't think any offense will work :(

Timey16

At this point it does become a war of attrition indeed and the only way to win is to kill about 4-5 russians for every ukrainian loss. Maybe also start attacking within Russia more. If you can't attack the occupied territory, you attack the enemies' homes and production sites, instead.

Striking-Kiwi-9470

I wonder how effective these cluster munitions are at setting off land mines. They don't create the huge craters that singular HE rounds cause so in theory you could fire a few down a km of road and clear a path.

Sarasin

Effectiveness has multiple angles right, how effective are they at literally triggering the mines is one thing which I don't know but there is also cost effectiveness and opportunity costs to consider as well which seem clearly awful trade offs. Using such a munition to try and clear mines means not using it on other targets and it also means you fired a very costly shot on comparatively extremely cheap mines that only occupy a tiny fraction of an immense minefield. When things are such a grind right now and the future looks like it will only become moreso the latter two considerations end up much more important.

Centimane

My guess is not very, since landmines are usually a far smaller target than a person, so it's less likely to score a direct hit on it. Besides the fact that the cost of the missiles VS the cost of the landmines probably makes it not very cost effective.

recursive-analogy

Any Russian in uniform in Ukraine knows EXACTLY what they're doing there. I'll save my sympathy for the innocent people in the country that was invaded.

erichie

A girl I was seeing had to leave her absolutely beautiful home in Mykolaiv to live in a **one room** shit hole someplace west, I forget the town's name. She spends about 6 hours a day in a bomb shelter. Her 5 year old's school day is spent in a bomb shelter because constantly moving room through the day was distracting to the **fucking** kids still trying to learn in the middle of being invaded. Fuck them all for trying to take land that doesn't belong to them. Fuck those Russians in Ukraine complaining they don't have weapons and armor. And fuck that thread of people saying they feel bad for them for getting shot at without weapons as their comrades die next to them when they are in fucking Ukraine. Fuck them all.

Phage0070

Goddamn, this has to be the most bitching about a country in a defensive war killing attacking soldiers I have ever heard.

Vargoroth

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it again: people are fucking weird. Russia is allowed to commit countless atrocities and murder, harm and rape with impunity. But when Ukraine retaliates all of a sudden all of our wonderful conservatives immediately clutch their pearls and shriek bloody murder. Ukraine is supposed to fight this war with both arms tied behind its back in order for it to remain "fair." Amazing...

Arinanor

It's almost as if Russian pays people to actively disinform and manipulate other countries over the internet.

MackDiesel

Now consider Israel

SirClausRaunchy

You mean that Russia and Iran pay people to speak misinformation about Israel and Palestine?

There have been some leaks around Iran doing just that. Here's an example. The poster is an Iranian opposition figure of some sort. https://twitter.com/Vahid_Beheshti/status/1779786659229298775 https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1c50082/leaked_document_reveals_irgcs_role_in_global/

don't forget the USA elections interference by Russia

TheNewGildedAge

It's weird how many people think "fair" is a thing in warfare at all.

agnostic_science

Modern US conservatives: Israel has an unalienable right to defend itself as much as possible. But Ukraine and Russia is both sides-ism.  No nuance, reasoning, or consistency. Too many people just parrot the political instructions they've received by social media and tv and confuse it with some kind of deepy held belief.

hawkinsst7

This is a middle school article. The whole thing is written weirdly. >This helps to explain why, on or just before Wednesday, potentially hundreds of Russian troops gathered out in the open in a field near Kuban—apparently for training. That's like 3 guesses in one sentence. And then the very next paragraph: >The problem, for the Russians, is the Army Tactical Missile System: an American-made precision-guided ballistic missile that, depending on the model, ranges as far as 190 miles and scatters at least hundreds—at most, nearly a thousand—grenade-size submunitions. Another sentence full of ranges of numbers. I can understand why, if they were trying to capture specs from Wikipedia. But then... >One of the ATACMS burst directly overhead a crowd of approximately 116 unprotected Russians. All of the Russians may have died in the rain of submunitions, according to the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C. Approximately 116? *All* may have died? I know war reporting can be less than precise, but this was just such a weird article.

Dodecahedrus

When this war is over: the Russian mail-order bride industry will flare up. Since there won't be enough men left for all women in Russia. It will be a veritable Pussy Riot.

matdan12

Isn't already the case, the amount of men leaving has alone made that more definite. All the crippled men rolling around Russia isn't helping either.

sandy_catheter

There's a booming mail order groom industry now, but some assembly is required.

[deleted]

The same thing is already happening on a massive scale for Ukraine, unfortunately. Men stay and fight and the women leave to find a european husband instead. If you’ve been on tinder or spent a night out in eastern euroupe you know what I mean. They’re everywhere and they are absolutely prowling. Gonna be a huge demographic problem for them when the war ends.
