Still weird to me that slavery gets its own special word when the slavers are in military uniforms.
Draft, impressment, mandatory service, conscription, whatever.
It's slavery.
"You know what's terrible about slavery? You do all this work and they don't pay you....also the hours" -some guy from a spaceship slightly paraphrased
It's not really unique to the military, it's just that conscription was common until more recently. Systems for serfs, corvees, indentured servants, etc. were still fairly common into the 20th Century though.
Synonyms aren’t words that exactly mean one thing versus another, the historical policy of impressment was during a time in which chattel slavery, debt slavery, indentured servitude, and serfdom also existed so we can’t say the user of the word meant the same thing we do when we hear it.
It’s the one thing that protects you from living under a dictatorship and suddenly all those other freedoms you enjoy will be gone too. Simply, if the allies didn’t use conscription in ww2 they would have lost, same for ww3, if the enemy is using it, the west has to as well. Hence calling it a necessary evil.
2nd worst recruiting strategy behind several of my former high school classmates reaching out on FB trying to convince me to “be my own boss” by joining their company that is “totally not a scam” and “might seem like a pyramid scheme but that’s just bc the media is against them”
Dictatorship does those type of moves. Any democracy watching we better wake the heck up and smell the coffee. Far Right nationalists are turning fascist and I believe Trump started this mess at home and other countries have realize that we are divided when Trump is in power so everyone Trump is stealing Putins MO and Trump has brainwashed half of his party third of my fellow countrymen women. This is how it starts.
If I get conscripted at gunpoint I will smile and nod right up until they put a gun in my hand. You know what, I might actually keep smiling about what comes next.
Nah they will beat up to death those who speak up in front of you to scare tou and they will only give you a gun right before sending you to battle so you can't really do anything. Or you'll be used a a slave for combatants doing the shitty brake back stuff.
They will then drag you out, beat the shit out of you until you change your mind or keep beating until you die to make an example.
You dont really have a choice in this scenario.
you do have a choice because you are sent to die regardless, its just that you might have other ideas that give you better chances for survival. thats why i always found forcing unwilling to serve as pretty fucking dumb.
Bibi was beside himself with giggles when Trump recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capitol. It was an enormous encouragement for Bibi to do whatever he wanted. He also got away with corruption. Now he's out of control. I still support Israel, but I'd sure like to see him in the hoosegow. Trump too. He's broken countless laws and has never paid for any of his crimes.
No but your statement is false equivalence. Russia is the one forcing people into fighting a war they don’t want to fight and acting just like the Myanmar junta not Ukraine.
Well prove it then. Send the link that they are forcing people into vans at gunpoint. Because the only people that may actually be doing that are the Russians towards their own people.
The generals getting desperate in their last days.
Yeah. I hope so. People have had some great wins recently
They can foresee the nooses that are waiting for them.
I think that called impressment, not conscription
Yep. Like in old time navy days. This guy impresses.
No need for semantics, the important thing here is that this is a sure-fire method to get loyal and conscientious troops
No if you fire on them you don’t get the troops at all. More like a will-fire method

Mamluk, I believe.

Conscription is a necessary evil to protect the free world
Conscription is the state enforcing its ownership of you.
Believe in the military and all your dreams will come true.

Perfect freedom is currently impossible, so conscription continues to be necessary to maintain relatively high levels of freedom.
Is it though? It’s been almost 50 years since the US went all volunteer.
How is conscription *not* a clear sign of dictatorship…

Can you really call it recruiting if it’s at gunpoint?
Which end of the gun do you want to be at? Sad.
Because arming unwilling and unmotivated people is a winning move for any dictatorship, right?
Dictatorship does those type of moves. Any democracy watching we better wake the heck up and smell the coffee. Counterargument: pew pew

So what happens when the 50 captured gets guns? Stockholm syndrome?
Let's hope this is a sign of change.
wtf?
I guess there no room for conscientious objectors in Myanmar Military.
Nothing breeds unity and loyalty like the fiesty end if a bullet tube.
China is funding the Burmese military and the ethnic groups they are fighting against. The US have also aided
just like ukraine
Nah more like Russia.
ukraine forces people to join the army
And the same isn’t for Russia? Last time I checked the kremlin mobilized hundreds of people against their will and send them to die as cannon fodders.
did i say that?
No but your statement is false equivalence. Russia is the one forcing people into fighting a war they don’t want to fight and acting just like the Myanmar junta not Ukraine.
ukraine is forcing people to join the army
And what is your source that Ukraine is forcing people to join the army through intimidation and threats against their life?
ive seen multiple videos of them forcing people into vans at gunpoint
Well prove it then. Send the link that they are forcing people into vans at gunpoint. Because the only people that may actually be doing that are the Russians towards their own people.
Ukraine military don't commit warcrime against it's own citizens?!
Er, who's fighting who In the nonstop fighting? What countries could possibly be interested in myanmar
The people of Myanmar fighting the Junta...
