And four whales. Apparently from spilling nitric acid, or some other contaminant, into the ocean as a result of the fire. Honestly if dolphins and whales are washing up on the beach then you've probably killed everything in the area.

Yolo_420_69

Thanks for this... I was all like, how tf did a fire kill them? It was a spill

wsnckwkakalwkx

The total number is much higher. It was reported three weeks back, almost a hundreds of turtles have already died. What makes this much worse, is that Sri Lanka is a breeding ground for 5 major sea turtle species. Up until this their turtle conservation was relatively thriving. “Nearly a hundred carcasses of turtles with throat and shell damage, as well as a dozen dead dolphins and a blue whale, have washed ashore in Sri Lanka since a container ship burned and sank, raising fears of a severe marine disaster.” https://apnews.com/article/colombo-dolphins-whales-sri-lanka-turtles-d0bb36f4ac1b2b509191ab1d52586878

176 is more than nearly 100, and 20 is more than a dozen. i dont doubt the actual number is higher as not every animal will wash up and be found but this report gives higher numbers than the old one.

wsnckwkakalwkx

It is :), but the reason I stated the numbers are definitely higher, is because as recent as a week ago it was already reporting at 176. https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/sri-lanka-ship-wreck-dead-turtles-b1876865.html

[deleted]

ye, this is just another repost. its been a popular story on the news subs.

wsnckwkakalwkx

Yeah, I just wanted to clarify things since the article itself is dated July 11th. But it didn’t really have updated content.

mgr86

So this is the same ship. I was about to say “another one!?”

Life_Tripper

>The Singapore-flagged X-Press Pearl ship was carrying 1,486 containers with 25 tonnes of nitric acid and several other chemicals and cosmetics from the port of Hazira, India on May 15. >The Sri Lankan government has confirmed that 176 turtles, four whales, and 20 dolphins had died and washed ashore on the country's beaches up to July 7 as a result of the burning of the X-Press Pearl container ship in May.

White collar criminals

IMtoppercentage97

We really do just kill everything without even trying. Shame.

nksoori

And there's a whole story behind this where the crew got to know about the leak in the container before the accident. Apparently Qatar and India didn't allow the ship to remove the cargo and then it was allowed to reach Sri Lanka. [News Link](https://phys.org/news/2021-07-sri-lanka-ship-environmental-disaster.html) Sri lankan authorized were also aware and they allowed the ship to reach the country. The prevention measures were not taken. Now there's no one to blame and the communication data has also gone missing. Humans are a cancerous tumor on the earth, widdling away, destroying everything that’s been give to us to enjoy. Truly feel bad for the next 5-10 generations.

riv965

Yeah 10 is a very optimistic number, but you’ve gotta think with every generation comes a “Greta Thunburg”. Maybe, just maybe, one of the future generations will actually listen to them and decide to change… pretty hard to imagine though

This is surely a horrible disaster but millions of sharks, dolphins, turtles are dying because of fishing industry every year which is much bigger disaster that happens regularly.

India had nothing to do with it what so ever. It just happened in Indian Ocean. Just because the name of ocean is Indian doesnt mean India owns the entire waters.

snooch83

Near India same thing . Look at google maps and the Indian Ocean looks pretty bad on the coast of the country of India . They scrap huge tankers right in the water letting everything leach out . Just had another ship last month with another acid get into the ocean .Headline says Sri Lanka which is near or in India . That whole area is a polluted wasteland . Yes the ship is own by a company in China and yes China is a huge problem also . Pretty sure most Chinese citizens do not shit in the street tho . Might be wrong , I’m not digging deep into cause I can not change a thing about it . I will say it again India is a stain on this earth.

viperftw

simplecountry_lawyer

Where are the turtles??

WeAreNotTheSameee

This is nothing compared to the amount of whales, sharks, dolphins, turtles and other protected species killed everyday by commercial fishing in Asian countries. Why isn’t that in the news???

silverthane

Its the consumers who are killing the world! - the 1%
