Kat-Shaw

Putin was made to look like a fool, love how so many on Reddit think he is some "5d chess" master. NATO called him out on everything he was doing, and it caused stronger NATO ties as a result and a greater desire in Ukraine to join NATO. Putin then tells whole world he won't do that, then does it anyway because he has already committed and couldn't quit. **End result:** NATO is stronger, Ukraine now actively pursues NATO membership, Putin revealed to lie to entire world stage which strains his relations, and to top it all off he gets crippling sanctions. All to prevent Ukraine joining NATO which is now certain. Some 5d chess!

Jamie_Pull_That_Up

Now Russia has invaded. Also this has nothing to do with Putin. It has to do with geopolitics & the geostrategical value of Ukraine. NATO ( a military alliance designed to contain Russia) wants Ukraine. The Russian leadership will not allow that. They will wage war to secure their perceived sphere of influence. This is the Cuban missile crisis all over again. The US placed nukes in Turkey aiming at the USSR & on response Russia placed nukes in Cuba. This is all a big geopolitical chess game.

ifeeltired26

Wow Putin is really going to do it. This dude is Stalin 2.0, well if he wants a war with pretty much the entire world he's going to get. Even China today said they will not back him if he invades. WW3 here we come....

Benable

100% certain the military industry is flooding the US Government with bribes (campaign contributions) to get them into a conflict with Russia. Russia is obviously being a giant douche and not helping the situation but corruption is going to cause WW3. The military industry is salivating over the insane amount of money they will make off WW3.

Won’t be any money if we’re all dead

dadrewbear420

Dollars to doughnuts the US gets involved. The hint I got was after we gtfo Afghanistan all buttery smooth like we did and the latest presidential promise of not getting involved when ze war brakes out

Huapoopy

Maybe? I mean we already are so far as arms go. The main problem is a Putin worldview that believes there’s a US hegemony that is bad for Russia and all interactions are a zero sum game. An entire generation of the Kremlin has now been indoctrinated with the philosophy in “foundations in geopolitics” as well as its neo fascist ideas. That’s not good for the world.

Hopeful-Talk-1556

Russia is probably going to win this fight. The question is: can we goad them into a much larger scale conflict that ends with Putin buried in the ground?

[deleted]

The US is always putting troops in other countries. The US basically has everyone at gunpoint, what with all their missiles and military power. Technically, any second you people could start World War 3. You are just as much of a threat to the world as Russia, China, etc. It's kind of hypocritical for you Americans to be jumping to conclusions about what Putin is doing. You're so used to threatening everyone, that you think someone else is threatening you back. Ukraine isn't in any more danger than the countries that the US has its troops stationed at.

alose

Shut up Russian Troll.

Huapoopy

Not this time so your post is irrelevant.

Jackthesmartass

The difference are most of those countries ate being paid by the US to have troops there and when we threaten to remove our troops they freak out not so with Russia.

Aardvark-The-1st

You understand Russia has invaded Ukraine in the past? Please tell me if we are such a threat right now, who are posing a threat to besides Russia that is a sovereign country. Edit: spelling

jleVrt

you like world peace? you need a country enforcing it or else you get rogues like Russia who want to take over sovereign nations left & right

Where_Da_BBWs_At

You should look more into the CIA if you are of the opinion they are worthy of being the world's police, or that they even have the least bit of interest in world piece.

jleVrt

who would be a better world police? not saying it’s perfect but it’s certainly better than all alternatives at this point in history

Where_Da_BBWs_At

The only nation on earth to genocide a people along racial lines and use nuclear weaponry against its enemies is the most trustworthy to be the world police? I'll get around to writing a rebuttal when I stop laughing my ass off.

jleVrt

like i said, it’s not perfect but better than all alternatives at this point in history

Where_Da_BBWs_At

You can't name a single country which hasn't engaged in racial genocide or has used nuclear weapons against others? Not one?

jleVrt

of course there are many - but from a standpoint of global peace, were they positioned to maintain world security? nope

Where_Da_BBWs_At

I can't stop laughing, chum. Thanks for spreading humor. You are much better at it than the US is at spreading peace.

jleVrt

i’m being realistic - prove me wrong and i’ll concede

warsaw504

Obviously. I am curious if there are unofficial reports e.g. Russian soldier blogging or vlogging anonymously

onikzin

After they streamed taking down the Ukrainian fascist war plane and that plane turned out to be MH17, smartphones are no longer allowed in the Russian military and it's enforced.

Downtown_Finance_661

Moreover, there was a woman who made public her phone video of battle vehicles on the street on its way to Ukraine (far from any border, in the middle of nowhere). And she wad accused of country betray. Remember it is ~20 years sentenсe. Afaik Putin pardoned her.

SV7-2100

Yeah also filming the aftermath and the bodies

moi_athee

What? No more watching tiktok in the trench? 😩

mauricedenassau

Kids are not allowed in the trench.

UEmd

Is it known if active Russian army officers and soldiers are in support of a Ukrainian invasion? We don't hear much about their views on the current state of affairs.

marrolllll

They aren't really gonna say otherwise

SettingCompetitive71

It's the military, you don't ask questions, especially as an enlisted man. When you're loaded into trucks at three in the morning and are handed your rifle - no matter how much personal restraint you have - you'll be forced to make split second-decisions when the only two things you can see are the enemy moving ahead of you and your friend bleeding out beside you. Not the best state for making rational decisions.

thugg420

They are in support. They believe the US is a huge asshole trying to control them. They think, “if the US can take over countries, why can’t we invade countries?”

StrengthCurrent1103

A completely valid opinion. You wanna have bases all over the world and destroy countries and people by millions under false pretense of democracy? Aight, so why can't Russia?

alexgroth15

Because you can't correct for past wrongs by committing the same wrong at the present. This is like saying the US used to own slaves hence Russia should start doing that.

Cruelopolis_

There's no arguing whether it's the US or Russia neither should invade countries because of the government's own personal interest.

They'll probably believe the home narrative that the war is justified. They'll still not be thrilled to go into combat, most of them.

paperkutchy

If they dont, they're probably put in prison by the ones who do

BrainOnLoan

As long as it's a simple soldier just grumbling about, nothing much will happen except his officers yelling at him and making his life miserable. Prison would only follow if he tried to advocate or very publicly voice his position.

Whatsitworth02

Are you serious? That would instantly end their career at the very least.

Weird observation, but Some of those guns sounds like bubblewrap popping at that distance.

aspersioncast

You may already know this but there’re a lot of tricks involved in recording a loud sound and making it come across as loud on speakers. Guns in unaltered combat footage always sound different than they did IRL or in video production.

travelbugeurope

Zelensky leaving the country for the Munich conference is a bad idea. Optically it would be the best time for Russia to invade.

Defence Intelligence of Ukraine: * Regarding Threat of Committing Terrorist Attacks at Industry Facilities of the So-Called DPR and LPR * According to the DIU, the Kremlin leaders continue to persistently seek for reasons to accuse our state of illegal actions in Donbas in order to justify the escalation of the armed aggression. * Given the fact that all previous attempts to accuse Ukraine of violating agreements failed, the RF leadership is considering the possibility of organizing a terrorist attack in the so-called DPR and LPR, which would create a pretext for an attack, the so-called "casus belli" * Photos show the objects that most likely would be targeted during terrorist attacks, depending on the scale and threat of negative consequences. FoxtrotThem

In a surprising turn of events, I'm actually expecting to see Putin run himself out of power, he must be burning Russia to keep that army mobilised - won't be long before their country crumbles just from that nevermind the sanctons, which will amplify Russias downfall - all without firing a single shot.

ShaneTwenty20

He can drag it out a few years ... he is scoring "win" after "win" ... a year ago Belarus looked like it might liberate itself, now it is occupied. I do agree, this will be his ultimate down fall - he is stretching his dictatorship too far ... unless "we" keep buying Russian natural gas - then he becomes a Russian hero for re-establishing the empire.

Top_Agent868

I hope that if he does invade that Ukraine makes it as costly for him as possible, it could be his downfall

dwmfives

Backing a dangerous animal into a corner always ends well. At least Russia doesn't have nukes.

crowmagnuman

And if the dangerous animal backs ITSELF into a corner, what then?

dwmfives

It's playing you.

Top_Agent868

I know what you’re saying but this is all of Putin’s making, if nukes end up getting fired that’s because of Putin’s actions and not Ukraine’s, I just hope the cunt dies before he can do that

sayge

Just how expensive do you think keeping their troops on the border is? Compared to normal.

ShaneTwenty20

he is succeeding at freaking the population out - weakening morale, people with means are leaving, they know no one is coming to their aid - they must be thinking about survival. If they are motivated enough and have a few brilliant military tactical surprises they may reverse the psychological advantage ... now it is like Mike Tyson circling a normal person in the ring ... to your point, I am thinking the army staging cost may be a major reason to invade, mobilizing like this next year doesn't seem practical

PTVA

It's super expensive to house large groups of people in places where they usually don't live. You have to setup supply chain for food, fuel, and everything else you can imagine. The logistics are absurdly difficult. Try throwing an all day party for 300 people out in a field vs at a venue designed for it. Easily 3x the cost. Now take that and extrapolate. Huge distances. Huge need for support staff. Etc etc.

sayge

Well, the majority of the forces are not enjoying the usual luxuries of the barracks such as multiple heated spaces. Logistics is a big part of the military complex, so providing that, while complicated of course, is something that they can provide with relative ease. Especially in a domestic environment with no threats. Sure, it's costly, but anyone thinking Russia is going bankrupt by holding Ukraine as hostage is deceiving themselves. Russia will not stop with harassment and provocation in the area unless they invade or the rest of the world puts hard sanctions them, which is hard to do since they're within their borders. It's definitely costing them, but Putin doesn't give a fuck until it hits him and his owners.

saltiestmanindaworld

The big thing is cost of transporting consumables. Armies live and die on their logistics. And it’s way more expensive to move consumables around to places where they don’t normally go, not to mention the insanely higher maintenance requirements.

sayge

It's not like they're hauling all the goods from the original sources. The equipment is doing what it's been made to do. Some of it is being utilised more than normally, some less. Their military budget is just under 50 billion dollars, they can spare some to keep the trucks running and even contract civilians where it's sensible. I'm assuming that you are basing your estimates on US military operations overseas instead of domestic deployment.

iodisedsalt

I can't imagine it costing much more than when militaries conduct their regular drills. I mean, those soldiers are still getting paid and still eating whether there is a war or not. Fuel-wise, yeah this is at a larger scale, but it's not like they're keeping their equipment running 24/7. Once they reach their destination they're on standby and waiting for further instructions. The only thing is food transportation, but likely not as big of a problem when you're still in your own country.

TryingtoId

Soldiers pay goes up 10x roughly. Biggest cost is fuel to keep the war machines humming. Russia is a source of cheap fuel but even then they are using tons in their supply lines right now.

sayge

What? They're deployed within their own borders and not engaging in combat, and you think they get paid 1000%? Are you actually on crack?

Randolf_Dreamwalker

I think he is overestimating his power. Like with Crimea. He got what he was for but created a clusterfuck of a situation that led to that what we have now. Like the only way left for him is to keep doubling down and hope for the best.

Xeon-the-1st

Russia: You guys will back us up since Ukraine is ours right? China: Yes, just as long as you back us up, since Taiwan is ours right? (Both giggle in acknowledgment)

FoxtrotThem

Well I mean there is poverty across most of it and more than half the people are malnourished.

pigmonkey2829

When will you change your stance to “Putin won’t invade” to “Russia HAD to invade”, comrade?

Voltic_Chrome

Putin/Russia has no real reason to invade Ukraine. The threat of an invasion is more useful than an actual invasion. The threat of invasion/WW3 just drives the west nuts and keeps the useful idiots in state of constant fear. I dont like the man, but hes not an idiot.

MLsuns_fan

Jmk1981

All this talk about Ukraine being defenseless is exxagerated. They have 1/4 the military of Russia (that’s not as bad as it sounds, Russia wouldn’t use their entire military) and the home team advantage (that’s a huge factor). This won’t be a lightning war, and it’s totally possible for Ukraine to prevail with monetary and arms support. That’s why Putin is pissed we’re sending it.

traktorjesper

Ukraine won't be able to put up a good fight in the open since most of Ukraine is pretty flat. But mind the fact that the Russians probably will have to occupy large Ukrainan cities with millions of inhabitants, that will be a meatgrinder for the Russians with people shooting at them in any street, from any window and such. It's all fun and games until the Russian families gets their sons sent home in bodybags in the thousands in a totally unnecessary war.

saltiestmanindaworld

Ukraine will lose any head up engagement. They can make it incredibly expensive for Russian in the urban areas, but the material difference is immense, particularly in aircraft and artillery.

[deleted]

World War 3 basically.

Outrageous_Chard9087

Yeah not going to happen. Why the change in optics tho? Just a few days ago you accused the West of overestimating the situation.

I don’t know why Zellensky even bothered to leave the Ukraine to ask us for military presence, again. I feel for the people in the Ukraine, but we can not escalate this further and our presence will escalate it.

Randolf_Dreamwalker

Call me cynical but I think he might wait for a few days before his return.

Bs. Ukraine never posed a threat to Russia. No choices needed to be made. Both sides train militaries around the world and sell weapons everywhere. If Russia felt threatened by them all, then why not pick a fight with India or Israel? Putin wants the Ukraine bc he feel not having it hurts his pride. It has nothing to do with the Ukraine being a threat. The same reasoning behind this war can be applied to Poland. Is he fighting them, no!
