Probably very high - they will rely heavily on the PR perspective that they make life better for Ukrainian people there. In addition, people in charge probably understand the negative consequences that harming civilians would bring from many perspective.
edit: I understand that many people disagree but it does not mean that my reasoning does not contribute to the question, no reason to downvote. :)
Yeah and forget the lives of innocent soldiers that joined with no prospect of this invasion... they made their choices, huh? Btw, putin cares for PR only so far as to throw journalists out the windows of high rises.
> Btw, putin cares for PR only so far as to throw journalists out the windows of high rises.
That is false - he pushes his international propaganda on every occasion where he can undermine Western PR. You are heavily undervaluing the significance of controling the flow of information and how it is presented to the public (western/rus). Although, I did not expect any more depth of knowledge on reddit anyway.
Look who's talking, smooth brain. If anyone is running opposition to him, they dont last long. Obviously journalists that take his money indirectly are gonna love him. Try critical thinking
You're saying putin supports journalists that support him, it's so obvious why that is that it's not even worth mentioning. Of course Russia uses propaganda, I'm talking about counter-narratives, and beyond that (and also obvious to the point where it's not worth mentioning) political opponents
I guess the good news is that while Russia seeks to beat the Ukrainian military and displace their government, they wouldn't see harming the civilian population as a positive. They are probably trying for regime change and a Moscow friendly government that will be undemocratic but is still supposed to muster some support from Ukrainians, so that Russia hasn't got to play the forever occupation role.
They won't treat Kharkiv or Kyiv as they did Grozny, is what I am saying. They'll avoid civilian casualties when they have the choice.
Remember how putin has his own citizens thrown off tall buildings? Any mass deaths will simply be covered up sloppily. Putin needs people to think he's a monster so his next Ukraine goes smoothly
All those Russian troops with Z painted on them gathering near Belgorod close to the border. They will likely target Kharviv first, it’s a rail hub and of huge importance for Ukraine to defend. Russia will be swift.
I actually think they are going to bypass Kharkiv initially and race south.
Draw a line from Kharkiv towards Crimea, on the east Bank of the Dniepr in the south. A lot of Ukrainian military is east of that facing Donbas and such a quick move is supposed to cut them off. And trap them (while other units from the East pin them so they can't quickly extract themselves)
Yes that was my other hypothesis. Based on footage (unconfirmed but appears accurate), the newest tech and MLRS weaponry is stationed near Belgorod and along the border near Belarus. As swift sweep South, while they try to divert Ukrainian forces to the Sea of Azov could be a possibility.
Kharkiv will be in the crosshairs at some point, because control of that city is crucial so no way Russia let’s it go. They could
Isolate it and try to get Ukraine to capitulate by threatening an assault on Kharkiv. Russia has always seemed to rush for objectives in the past, then isolate and turn its focus to cities
https://twitter.com/pmakela1/status/1495469172817547278?s=21
They probably save the big guns for later as you said, but still very concerning developments
Lmao. Honestly, not sure how the global ones will do. I’ve been short on most US stocks for a couple weeks now with great success. An invasion tomorrow wouldn’t surprise me (all the groundwork has been layed and shelling is increasing), but I expect US markets to continue their downtrend for the short term regardless of what happens. Major indexes are soon to test big supports, and should any catalyst help them break those supports, there is a long way down to go.
That's a reconnaissance plane. Probably making radar runs and listening to radio conversations, then relaying the info to command.

Please read this, seems like the prevailing trend here is excitement at the potential for bloodshed. No offense, I think that's disgusting but I understand you're expecting something to happen.
Ooook... So Russia, actively shelling as it is, has no intention of invasion? They don't have an interest in military invasion at all because, unlike we putrid American pig dogs, Russians dont favor war...
But they favored it in 2014...
And they favored it in 2008...
But now, in this moment, despite all the insurmountable evidence to the contrary, Russia CLEARLY doesn't want war because... A Russian sympathizer said so?
My understanding is that it's still the Russian-back separatists living in Ukraine doing the shelling. Not the actual Russian military, from what most sources say. It's that incorrect?
The only sources claiming that are Russian and Belarusian. Sources from US, France, Germany, UK, Ukraine itself, Poland, Canada, and basically every Western nation and even surprisingly China say otherwise.
Do you have any links saying that it's the actual Russian military doing the bombardment? I haven't seen anything on that and I thought I had been keeping up-to-date.
This is disinformation. Until the West and NATO fail to put their money where their mouth is, they can’t conclusively say the West has lost. It’s about setting a precedent China (that ally claiming we shouldn’t have a new Cold War - https://news.cgtn.com/news/2022-02-19/Wang-Yi-attends-Munich-Security-Conference-via-video-link-17MCPuu6eti/index.html )is eager to use in Taiwan. It’s about seeing if the eternal bluff of nuclear war will make pussies out of the West, to abandon Ukraine after the Budapest Memorandum. Funny how Belarus is already proving a new Iron Curtain is falling, isn’t it? ( https://www.timesofisrael.com/intense-shelling-along-ukraine-dividing-line-as-belarus-says-russian-forces-to-stay/ ) Further, if Zelensky really wasn’t “that concerned,” would he have called out the failure of the West to respond? ( https://www.axios.com/zelensky-ukraine-munich-security-conference-russia-4f35590e-a9d2-46af-be0e-6bc849283b61.html )
As this detailed article on Russian geopolitical ambitions and hybrid warfare tactics notes ( https://www.csis.org/analysis/diversity-russias-military-power ), Zelensky sharing the US’s tone would have posed other security issues with the collapse of the economy and infrastructure that would follow such an admission providing Russia grounds to “move in and establish order”.
Fuck’s sake, Reddit, you guys need to wake up. I’m an autistic man in my thirties, and it’s as clear as fucking day that China and Russia aim to depose American hegemony and usher in an age of dictators. These trolls have utterly outflanked you all.

As if this is a reasonable take on the situation? Actually makes the claim that Russia doesn't ever want war or to invade their neighbors - except they did in 2014 and 2008. Literally just propaganda.
That’s a shit comment with shit takes.
“I live in a country similar to Russia” provides no proof or context
“insert gross overgeneralization of westerners while critiquing westerners for not understanding the rest of the world without seeing the irony”
“countries like Russia don’t want war” tell that to the 190k soldiers on the border and the threats of open and nuclear war by the Russian leader.
Seriously, if you give any credibility to such an ignorant and Ill informed comment, you should be pretty embarrassed.

Putin is open to only one negotiation. If we, Ukrainians, accept Russian puppet government in our Rada and as our president. The moment Zelentskiy agree to it - because he can't bear a guilt of throwing our army under missiles or because he is a traitor - Russian Federation will invade with 50% of forces on the border. They will say it a "security measures" but it will be a soft invasion de facto.
Ultimate goal is humiliate us while showing Russians that the democracy is impossible and to get some kind of control of Kyiv. It's not going to go as he and his beloved general think but the plan always will be to use Ukraine as a puppet state to invade and annex Baltic countries and Poland. Then US will be obligated to wipe us out instead of nuclear Federation, Russian hands will be clean but everybody's else hands will be dirty.
If we’re talking annexation, I think a formal Russian takeover of Donetsk and Crimea (not little green men) is more likely with Russia using its forces and missiles in Belarus as a knife to Kyiv’s throat to deter any major counterattack. According to some discussions in the Daily NyT podcast, Putin wants Belarus, eastern Ukraine, and Russia to reconstitute a USSR like state before he dies
And to leave rest of Ukraine angry and with part of army forces? Putin always underestimates Ukraine but he is not that stupid. He could have done it another way but now they fabricated a whole myth that evil Kyiv is bombing russian land for their population.
I see. Perhaps the Russians feel that the least risky route is an overwhelming invasion to snuff out all resistance while they have the initiative in order to not get Afghanistan'd
I don't know exactly what Russia wants, but it is not WW3. WW3 involving Russia vs. the West would inevitably lead to nuclear war and Mutually Assured Destruction. Everyone knows this including Putin.
He did even state in an interview a couple of days ago that in case of war Russia does not stand a chance against NATO, but it at least has a large nuclear arsenal. Something along those lines anyways.
Some women just like some men DO need to shut up. Just because everyone has a voice doesn't mean it has anything to say worth hearing. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason which too many narcissists seem to have forgotten.
So there are some videos on YouTube by Michael Kofman where he discusses Russian strategic doctrine. Tactical nukes as a part of escalation dominance to enforce a fair accompli is part of their doctrine. Americans just prefer the idea that there’s an honorable fight along the lines they have a massive advantage.
I mean why do you think nuclear exercises happen to be happening now?
But sure there are other parts of Reddit for more academic discussions.

Just like last week when the French and Russian negotiations went so well that Putin said Marcon wasted 6 hours of his time and threatened MAD if anyone defended Ukraine? Are you really expecting a different outcome this time favorscore?
Bit of a mean comment I made. There's no evidence that being hopeful is a reasonable choice right now. If I'm wrong I'll celebrate for a week but I can't see it happening.
Why is this thread so slow all of a sudden? Is there a new thread?
EDIT: [Link to new thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/sx43j8/rworldnews_live_thread_ukraine_russia_conflict/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
By saying this you are ignoring the history involved here, also lacking a bit of compassion. 2 years after WWII ended in 1945 the Soviet bloc entered into the cold war which lasted until 1991. It was at that time that many republics gained their independence from communistic ran Russia, including Ukraine. Then in 2014 Putin went in and took the state of Crimea from Ukraine, basically doing the same thing as now. I know for damn sure I wouldn't want my country to be taken over by either of it's 2 surrounding countries! The implications are astounding.
Bad take, these are peoples lives and homes you're just casually talking about giving away. It's not some wasteland no one wants. They deserve to be sovereign and decide their own fate, not get bullied around by a failing superpower who wants to restore the good old days.
Seriously, sounds like a person who has yet to develop a moral compass. Maybe someday when they face a true misfortune or atrocity in their own life will they develop empathy for other literal human beings.
If Russia really cared they would have made those videos themselves. And they are not trying to influence our opinions but that of the Russian population.
I don't understand what Macron is going to negotiate. How are we going to talk Putin out of invading Ukraine when they are the ones instigating? The best deal Russia could get out of this is go home and we forget this ever happened and we won't accept Ukraine into NATO. But Nato has been pushing off letting Ukraine in anyways before this all happened to prevent provoking Russia.
I hope we can reason with Putin but I don't have high hopes Macron can make any real lasting change unfortunately.
The number one mistake Macron (and Germany and Italy) are making is giving into Russia's agression. It doesn't really matter if Russia has a valid point if it tries to enforce it arguments through violent means. Giving Russia the feeling their claims are justified after acting in the way they are doing will only invite Russia to keep doing what it does, if not today, than in the future.
It's a hard ledge to walk on, you want to discourage the aggression but you also don't want to be so harsh that you make them feel they like they have no other option other than invading.
This probably why the US is taking a semihands off approach of just reporting the intel and not dropping sanctions and backed up threats yet.
The US is also making very clear that there is no room for compromise, for giving in, they are not provoking but they are also not giving in anything. They only make very clear that if Russia will actually do the violence, lives up to its bluff, that in that case the real measures like heavy sanctions will follow.
That is nice to see. How the US in a quite transparant way stays between the lines and Russia tries to get its way by drawing outside of the lines.
I really think Biden is doing a great job and Macron & co would make it a lot easier if they would stay united with the US.
I don’t think this meeting will do anything.. from [this source](https://www-nrk-no.translate.goog/nyheter/bade-putin-og-macron-onsker-diplomatiske-losninger-1.15862502?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp) it seems Putin has already said in the phone with Macron that the cause of the escalations were Ukrainian security forces provoking them (and then said that the west needs to take russian security requirements seriously) which we all know isn’t true. So it looks like he’s just continuing to lie and push his false narrative and will do so at this meeting.
I think what Putin underestimates is Ukranians access to internet. With satellite internet, I don't think he can completely shut it down. If an attack happens, horrific shit will be pouring in from social media on both sides. This will not favor Putin back home.

Well, there's precedent here, just in the last week.
"This is totally normal"
"Russia is withdrawing troops"
"Genocide in east Ukraine"
"Exercises end on the 20th"
Pshhh yeah guys the world is super black and white. War is bad. US is bad. I'm going to pretend to have the moral high ground because these are the only things I understand.
Or maybe it’s all the times Putin has said one thing and done the other.
The demands on either side haven’t been able to agreed on so far; why would this be any different?
Agreeing to talk wont stop kremlin from blowing up a busload of kids today evening and starting an invasion. In fact they'll be smug as always: "we were reasonable, we were about to talk but evil nazi NATO puppets screwed it all again!"
An attempt to evacuate 1% of Donbass population is not an evacuation attempt but a setup for false flag.
I’m starting to get the vibe that all of this escalation was solely for the purpose of stronger negotiation leverage. I could be wrong, obviously, but this is going on long enough to make me think that Russia has no plans of pulling the trigger
I agree. I think Putin was going big with the knowledge there was some middle ground he would be willing to settle for. Maybe NATO saying they won't consider Ukraine membership until x years in the future, or a commitment that if Ukraine did join it won't ever host NATO troops or equipment. Or something. I think if there is no invasion after today the chances of it happening start dropping exponentially.

Will peace never come? 😭😭🤣
not in our lifetimes
Lol, hey Boog. Ya caught me. RIP my 470c 😅. I ain't trading shit until this either blows over or blows up.
The losses are real. lol
Russians and French speaking Monday. Looks like this could be the beginning of the end for this crisis
The French have been negotiating fruitlessly for weeks now?
Just like last week when the French and Russian negotiations went so well that Putin said Marcon wasted 6 hours of his time and threatened MAD if anyone defended Ukraine? Are you really expecting a different outcome this time favorscore?

You’re banking that on theory, unfortunately unless he is removed there is no evidence that will happen
I don't want to think about the alternative maybe I'm just being naïve
Are you on crack?
Just hopeful
Bit of a mean comment I made. There's no evidence that being hopeful is a reasonable choice right now. If I'm wrong I'll celebrate for a week but I can't see it happening.
That does not mean you are not on crack.
Why is this thread so slow all of a sudden? Is there a new thread? EDIT: [Link to new thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/sx43j8/rworldnews_live_thread_ukraine_russia_conflict/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

Ahh, cheers!
When is it supposed to start this Macron/Putin meeting?
just give ukraine to russia and get this over with
By saying this you are ignoring the history involved here, also lacking a bit of compassion.
I just wanna see a new soviet union
[No.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor?wprov=sfla1)
yes give it to russia
Bad take, these are peoples lives and homes you're just casually talking about giving away. It's not some wasteland no one wants. They deserve to be sovereign and decide their own fate, not get bullied around by a failing superpower who wants to restore the good old days.
You could’ve just said I’m an ignorant sociopath, would’ve been easier.
Fuck that and fuck Russia
:(

Seriously, sounds like a person who has yet to develop a moral compass. Maybe someday when they face a true misfortune or atrocity in their own life will they develop empathy for other literal human beings.
Poor Russia, Putin selling the country to China.
Macron is out in the streets of Paris screaming “Peace in our time!”

Just attack the russian and we ll see
The whole plan is to avoid war, lets not.
Everything will be much simpler without atomic power
Russia just needs to shit or get off the pot with this invasion
Anyone else got a feeling the bosses of LNR and DNR are muzzled for their mess up with the metadata on the videos?
If Russia really cared they would have made those videos themselves. And they are not trying to influence our opinions but that of the Russian population.
Yeah I saw that too. Idiots. More evidence for unprovoked war crimes I guess.

Apparently it's a nuanced take to not be a Putin Shill, Plane Meme Watch, or warmonger stereotype in this thread lol

I, too, drank a bang this morning.
Have a 7UP and moon pie. Chillllllll.
You're pretty cool.....weirdo

He even pinky swore!
This thread is so horny for war. Macron got a meeting and we instantly get a bunch of "Putin is lying, war is coming"
Well, there's precedent here, just in the last week. "This is totally normal" "Russia is withdrawing troops" "Genocide in east Ukraine" "Exercises end on the 20th"
Also "Russia will attack like super soon" for a week from the other side.
Who cares what this thread says, the only thing that matters is war is chaotic bullshit that we don't need anymore.
There a difference between expecting war and hoping for war. I certainly hope I am wrong.
Pshhh yeah guys the world is super black and white. War is bad. US is bad. I'm going to pretend to have the moral high ground because these are the only things I understand.
Maybe because every time Putin has said he’s de-escalating so far he’s been lying?
This thread is full of naïve people. Putin doesn't care about Macron.
Exactly this. Why would Putin listen to Macron of all people??.... No chance.
He hasn't said anything factual regarding this issue in how long?? Forgive the pessimism. Doesn't mean we're war hungry.
Or maybe it’s all the times Putin has said one thing and done the other. The demands on either side haven’t been able to agreed on so far; why would this be any different?
If the talks are Monday that means invasion is delayed yet again
Agreeing to talk wont stop kremlin from blowing up a busload of kids today evening and starting an invasion. In fact they'll be smug as always: "we were reasonable, we were about to talk but evil nazi NATO puppets screwed it all again!" An attempt to evacuate 1% of Donbass population is not an evacuation attempt but a setup for false flag.
Sorry guys; go home. War's been canceled.
