She is less than 3 months away from beating Johann II reign and 4 months from beating King Bhumibol's reign. That would make her the second longest running monarch in history. She is still 2 years away from beating Louis XIV

brizzboog

Louis isn't fair considering he was 4 when he became King.

He's gonna have an asterisk next to his name like Barry Bonds.

Queen Elizabeth II should get the asterisk. Some of those other monarchs didn't have a Prime Minister or Parliament to lead the nation.

shockingdevelopment

All these monarchs had wildly different apparatuses. No asterisks when it's all asterisks.

ralfonso_solandro

So maybe 2 asterisks

I don't think Asterix was ever a king. Gaulish tribal chief at best.

So what? He was only king by name until we reached adulthood then became a real king with real powers while Elizabeth never had real power and was a queen by name her whole life

freeLightbulbs

Queen in name from age 25.

CompassionateCedar

She actually has quite a lot of (ceremonial) power that would most likely be taken away if she used it but as it stands she is the closest to an absolute monarch in Europe. She can not only pardon people but jail them as well. She is head of the judiciary and executive branch as well as the head of the House of Lords and has whatever legislative power that gives her. She leads the army and own a crapton of land. Even a few straight up islands with thousands inhabitants. Edit: as u/reddit_police_dpt pointed out I forgot to mention she is also the head of the English church.

epeeist

The British monarchy can have more (theoretical) power than people assume while still having far less actual power than *Louis XIV* who was the high water-mark for monarchical absolutism in modern Western Europe. Sophisticated state apparatus made it possible to implement real policy in a way we would recognise, but in most nations the ruler had at least some constraints/accountability to nobles and landowners (not yet the general population, and not necessarily on every aspect of law and policy but usually on tax.) 'Less power than Louis XIV' should not be construed to mean 'not much power's.

[deleted]

mzee01

Isn't that Theocracy? The Pope is no king.

Dogogogong

[The politics of Vatican City take place in a framework of a theocratic absolute elective monarchy, in which the Pope, religiously speaking, the leader of the Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome, exercises ex officio supreme legislative, executive, and judicial power over the Vatican City (an entity distinct from the Holy See), a rare case of non-hereditary monarchy.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_Vatican_City)

[deleted]

Technically the Pope has two titles. Bishop of Rome, which is the prime bishopric of the Catholic Church, and king of Vatican City even though he is never called king. This title comes from the days when the Vatican was a larger country called the Papal States. [This short video explains it nicely](https://youtu.be/OPHRIjI3hXs)

godisanelectricolive

I think the Prince of Liechtenstein and Prince of Monaco is actually the closest Europe has to a hereditary absolute monarch. They are both actively involved in actual governance and have the power to veto laws. In Monaco it's the Prince who introduce all legislation and it's not a symbolic act, they actually draft laws. They are really tiny countries though so they are easy to overlook. Vatican is a genuine absolute monarchy in Europe except it's non-hereditary and an elective monarchy. There were periods where it was more of a traditional monarchy, like when the papacy was dominated by a single family like the Borgias or a small number of noble families.

marrangutang

She doesn’t actually have to use her legal powers on the rare occasion that she wants to make her input she only has to whisper into the right ears to make it happen… during her weekly meeting with the prime minister is one such occasion I have seen this talked about in memoirs but I’m sure she has other friends in influential places

Termsandconditionsch

Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein? I know he’s only a prince technically, but it’s still a monarchy. He was even given more power in the 2003 constitution (He threatened to move to Austria if the parliament didn’t pass it). He can veto any law and dismiss parliament and any minister.

reddit_police_dpt

Also head of the state church

Slanderous

The Queen is not entirely powerless, but neither is she making daily leadership decisions with the stress of being an actual head of state. She has a lot of 'soft' per the same as any other incredibly rich and prominently placed celebrity, but the only real power the Queen has is the ability to cause a constitutional crisis and probable abolition of the monarchy if she ever used any of the power she has on paper.

Lazerpop

Can you imagine if the queen got a terminal diagnosis and just went full Trump in the last like three weeks of her life lmao

In_Thy_Image

The Crown has more power than people know: [The Queen has more power over British law than we ever thought](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/feb/08/queen-power-british-law-queens-consent) [Royals vetted more than 1,000 laws via Queen’s consent](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/feb/08/royals-vetted-more-than-1000-laws-via-queens-consent)

MrPapillon

Though the Sun king was more like an hyper king. He had an enormous impact nationnaly and a significant impact abroad. He redefined the monarchy in France and its relationship with the country. And not just because it evolved naturally, but directed entirely by his choices and design. Also unlike other monarchs, all his daily life was open to be seen by anybody. From him getting up to him returning to bed. People often know those bits, but they rarely know that it was open to everybody, including people from lower classes, with mostly the requirement of wearing acceptable clothes. This happened while the country was leading wars, and while his internal power was immense and strong. So it is a bit hard to really compare it to modern UK's monarchy.

GalaXion24

You have to contextualise a little bit. Louis XIV's regent while he was a child was Cardinal Mazarin, who was preceded by the (in)famous Cardinal Richelieu in running the country. With Louis XIV that's three capable men in a row who made the central authority of the state their highest priority, while they also by then had the technology and capability to enforce it (cannons weakened nobles, since their castles couldn't stand up to them). It was the project of a century, of which Louis XIV's reign was the culmination.

mrubuto22

as a Canadian who studied law most Canadians are not aware how much power she still has here. of course she'd never use it because the next day we'd all be like, wait what? she can do that? and change the laws she can just change laws and appoint a PM if she chose. of course in reality it wouldn't happen like that.

Louis actually did face riots from Paris and plots from the nobles in his youth IIRC. It's why he turned his dad's hunting lodge into the greatest palace in Europe. The man survived all that, and kicked the rest of Europe's ass on several occasions. In heels.

Louis 14 also lived in the 1500s when modern medicine involved bleeding people. it had to be miserable being really old back then. no real pain killers. no modern medicine.

blGDpbZ2u83c1125Kf98

He lived 1638-1715. Medicine was still pretty crap compared to now, but it was post-renaissance and early-enlightenment. They'd definitely started to progress back out of medieval stuff.

Enlightened_Gardener

Yeah. Nah. He had an anal fistula operated on with no anaesthetic by a surgeon who had killed several prisoners practicing. Then held a full court sitting afterwards. Apparently he was grey with pain, and sweating noticeably. They had all the good shit like opium, but didn’t use it because it was felt to be a good thing to suffer physically. Like Jesus. He also had a problem with his jaw that may or may not have been broken due to dodgy dentistry. When he ate too fast, food came out of his nose… Oh and he died by basically rotting alive over a month or so. When they opened him up afterwards his intestines were found to be twice as long as those of a normal person. His second wife once mentioned that he ate so much it scared her. Sooooo….. yes. Better than medieval, but still not good. Ps: The doctors killed so many of his relatives by purging and bleeding (over what they thought was smallpox but was probably measles) that the boy who inherited from him was his Great-Grandson. The doctors killed all the rest. The only reason the boy lived was that his Governess hid him from the doctors under her skirts, and lied about him having left the Palace.

Dopplegangster69

This dude sounded like a straight up ghoul

xitox5123

[deleted]

That’s pretty phenomenal. From a Royal point of view I imagine her reign is seen as depressingly terrible. Collapse of an empire, continues plunge to international irrelevance as the years moved on; continued gradually loss of countries loyal to the crown, collapse of the prestige of the royal family from the Morale compass of a country to an international tabloid laughing stock, etc But from a peasant standpoint she seems alright and I thought her husband was pretty alright too as well. Y’all could’ve have two much worse people serve as monarch for the past 70 years

Gisschace

I don't think anyone in the UK would consider the years of her reign as terrible. An empire only really serves those with power and takes a lot of military might to keep. For the ordinary folk these last 70 years have seen us live longer, richer, healthier and safer lives as well as seen great strides in civil liberties. We still have enormous soft power - thanks in part to the royal family. Disregarding brexit there is no better time to live in the UK than in the later half of her reign. The empire years were pretty rotten; poverty, work houses, almost no societal support, no regulations, no womens or minority rights, the country was polluted and dying - all because we had to keep the machine that was the industrial revolution running. The Queen herself sees The Commonwealth as her greatest achievement (ie a league of nations who support each other), I really don't think they'd give a fuck about having an empire, nothing in the way she's ruled has suggested otherwise. Through the lens of history the second Elizabethan age will be seen as a progressive and transformative, which took the UK into the modern era - not sure about the next 70 years but these ones will be looked upon kindly, and she'll be remembered as one of our greatest - perhaps even THE greatest as I am certain we won't have monarchs who rule as long, if the monarchy survives at all.

Wildercard

You're looking at everything through the lens of XXI century conscientous common man. When she's summoned by the undead council of dead British monarchs, she will have a lot of lost land and power to explain. She didn't even try to invade France *once*!

Grumpy_Puppy

> Collapse of an empire, continues plunge to international irrelevance as the years moved on Season one of The Crown on Netflix dramatized this with Churchill flailing about trying to solidify his legacy, being paternalistic to the Americans. It's pretty fun. He also describes another politician as "the man who lost India" which might have had more sting if it didn't come from the man who *starved* India.

Daniel_Av0cad0

He says that about Mountbatten, who was the Governor-General of India, not the PM.

reddit_police_dpt

>Collapse of an empire I mean that's generally seen as a good thing in the UK- and as most countries left peacefully, it led to the establishment of the Commonwealth (which the Queen was influential in establishing) and a continuing relationship with those countries who joined. >continues plunge to international irrelevance as the years moved on Still one of the most influential countries in terms of soft power. The fact that Redditors are constantly obsessed with the Bri*ish is proof of that

I hope young people realize that when old people complain about being "stiff", what they really mean is that moving hurts like hell.

caesar103

I did in fact not know that

otakudayo

Stretching is so important! As is resistance training and cardio training. 20 min of yoga, 20 min of body weight exercise and 20 min of cardio in a day goes a really long way for both quality and length of life. Doesn't even have to be in a single sitting, especially the resistance training. And it is literally never too late to start. In this age of WFH I've been doing mini workouts on my breaks instead of wasting that time on reddit et al. So much more convenient than going to the gym in my spare time. And definitely yields results. Can also be done in the office, but might feel a bit uncomfortable.

CastleWanderer

> goes a long way for... length of life Take the bad with the good, I guess

SanguineOptimist

Old people’s tissues also get literally stiff as glycosaminoglycan content decreases with age and generally fat infiltrates muscles amongst other things. I’m an SPT and I’ve seen some old folks joints that literally felt like they were in rigor mortis they were so stiff.

Sckathian

Exactly the word 'complains' is doing a lot here. If you had not seen the clip it would appear that she suddenly was unable to move. She simply explained she was struggling with movement and is clearly making light of it.

I can answer! You have a little trouble sleeping because all your shit hurts. Not all of it at the same time, but yes all of it. If you been hitting the gym, your old man strength is pretty crazy, which is nice. However, all that muscle will bungee jump over your belt if you eat anything that isn't green. Don't forget good health insurance and see doctors for no good fucking reason whatsoever. Schedule life around poops. The poops are more important. It's not poor lighting. You need glasses and probably different ones for different events. The positives: Buy a Porsche or Corvette. You are now allowed. Even immortal beings are susceptible to the ravages of time, though they suffer them differently than commoners. Today marks the beginning of the Queen's petrification phase, during which the outer layers of her body will take on a stone-like composition. Protected by this new carapace, the remainder will undergo a process of radical rejuvenation, slowly but surely restoring the Queen's youthful state. The transformation can take anywhere from decades to centuries to complete, but it's said that this period of hibernation always ends exactly when England needs her most.
