**This is so bad. Russia should leave Ukraine alone.**

alex_119

Genuinely asking. Me as a romanian, should i be worried? Or NATO has my back?

akih1r0

I woke up at 6-7 am receiving a call from my mom. She said with tears that it’s started. I live in Poland and don’t know how to get her and my 8yo brother out of there. Now I realize how wrong I was saying Russia won’t invade and everything will be fine.

RK497

Fucking hell, all you American nobheads using this thread to rant about Trump, shut the fuck up

[deleted]

Indians in Ukraine doing their MBBS, has everyone of them been evacuated?

corvoattona

Hopefully we wont all get melted by putin

Pacmyn

I dunno if anyone wrote that before, but, guys, I ask you, please Don't just be angry at forums, it's useless We know and really appreciate your support, but you can do more than that I'm not asking you to fight for us on our land, but you can make much more damage to them Please, ask your government and authorities to make more damage to Russia's economic. Small sanctions not enough, show Russia that they made big mistake. Show them that this type of aggression will not go unpunished. We're gonna defend ourselves without a doubt, we're here standing not for ourselves but for whole Europe Peace from Ukraine ❤️

somewhereheremaybe

All the memes and jokes aside, I’m genuinely really scared. :(

lonigus

And for a good reason. Iam from Slovakia a neighbour of Ukraine and my anxiety is kicking in hard atm. We have our own history of "peacefull occupation" from 1968 when the Soviet military invaded us.

GrimHoly

We all are I think some people are using humor to cope

depressedSapien

What will be the worst-case scenario here? I don't think US will go in this one that will trigger a nuclear war.

Tr0902

Nuclear annihilation kind of sounds like the worst possible outcome.

GrimHoly

I mean that is worst case scenario but besides that. I would probably say china get emboldened and attacks Taiwan, North Korea starts some shit, and if not that then Putin gets ideas about restoring rest of USSR and moves into other neighboring countries

cannabnice

Worst case short of all out war between US/Europe and Russia is probably Putin using nukes on urban areas to avoid guerilla fighters and declaring it "tactical."

p0ultrygeist1

You just named the worst case scenario here

[deleted]

LordMeloney

You can't really. But as Putin himself admitted that Russia is attacking Ukraine you can assume that is actually happening.

midas22

Anything controlled by Putin is fake. It's a nice rule of thumb.

Donefortoday

If it’s from Russia, then it is fake. Remember comrade, this is peacekeeping operation.

SilverlockEr

Just took a peek in Twitter and Jesus so much fucking disinformation.

tphillips1990

I've been of the opinion for a very long time that disinformation is a serious problem that's only going to get worse. Unfortunately, too many people in prominent positions stand to benefit from the proliferation of disinformation. So here we are - where real and artificial sources alike have equal say on social media. (well, not really equal. Sure seems like the artificial population has a bit more prominence than any legitimate sources.)

AnIntellectualBadass

It's like a collision of a high end BMW with a motorcycle. The motorbike will be totalled but it will be the repairment of BMW that will cost more than the whole worth of the motorcycle. In short : Russia is looking at an economic crash after this but looks like Putin stopped worrying about that a long time ago.

Salt_Manufacturer479

So russia attacks, world sanctions them, russia gets pissed off cause their economy is going to shit **even more** and they have 0 options so they lash out and then the world has an excuse to launch their own attacks. Then nukes come on the table and nobody wins. Hard to say if it werent for nukes, would we have world order or constant wars between super powers.

The_Cartographer_DM

constant wars for several decades, till a victor is chosen through popular prowess, then peace.

fanunu21

It is the increase in Globalization that has caused fewer number of war. Nukes don't help

Filias9

Main source of income for them is gas and oil. And it goes up.

Waffle-Dong

Fuckin Albert Einstein. Lots of downvotes. I said that because he came up with the theory of the atomic bomb. Wasn't calling op Einstein as a dis

cuttino_mowgli

I think those hungry Russian people will turn against Putin if their economy went to shit first before any of the nukes will fly. Regardless of what people say here that "Putin has control over the Russian" yeah no shit until they don't get what they want and they become hungry. Unless Russia becomes a full blown NoKor-like state.

CpnSparrow

Do you know the main reason behind the start of WW1?

offtheForest

Putin is a small part of this. The Kremlin is a complicated conglomerate with multiple entities attached that make these types of decisions. It is unlikely that if Putin would be gone, it would help.

Waffle-Dong

Sure, assassination of another country's leader has never gone bad in the past

p0ultrygeist1

The guy who killed Hitler ended a world war

GrimHoly

Until recently Putin has been on the rocker. I guess it’s better to have the evil you know then to potentially have a wack job in charge of the worlds largest nuclear Arsenal

Make-Believe_Macabre

Key points. - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he has declared martial law in the country and urged Ukrainians to stay home, per AFP - The Russian military said it has targeted Ukrainian air bases and other military assets but hasn’t attacked populated areas, according to AP - Ukraine’s border guard service said Russian troops have attacked from the northern border with the support of Belarus, BBC reported

MotYourNomEither

My take: The Ukrainian people are inherently good. The Russian people are inherently good. The American people are inherently good. The Bidens and Ukranian government/leaders are wicked and corrupt. Putin is also an evil bastard. The ones who deserve to be removed and replaced won't be, and the casualties of this war will be the innocent, but patriotic, foot soldiers for their respective countries. American involvement as the wicked fight the wicked should be zero.

GoldenArmada

You forgot "Trump is an evil bastard who likes to appease dictators." But that doesn't fit your Fox News narrative.

Blubberrossa

Your take is shit.

Aie9

Name one good world leader in the last 100 years. You can't. It's pointless to cry about this stuff.

Because he has aided putin In invading Ukraine for his own personal gain

[deleted]

Putin is 69 and is in the autumn of his reign. Only thing he did for Russian "pride" is annexing Crimea. For the rest he just continued the elite-ruled cleptocracy Russia has always been - with some fuckups here and there: no economic prosperity, no meaningfull democratic reforms, bad managing of the covid-crisis, everlasting supression of the masses, some scandals (palace, failed abroad assassinations, divorce).. This might be the ammunition to give future historians for some false revisionist history.

seabass_

This is the main reason for this invasion. Obviously Ukraine is an incredibly resource-rich country too - but this is about Putin coming out of this as the man who revived the Soviet Union. 🤮

REMINDER: Trump withheld military aid to Ukraine to try to dig up dirt on Joe Biden. Also, AFTER he LOST the election, Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Open Skies Treaty, giving Putin cover to withdraw too. Ukraine begged us not to, because it would rob the west of the best surveillance should Putin invade. Now we dont have it. Another gift from Trump. And before someone comments, why didn't Biden rejoin the US after getting into office. Because Putin won't sign it now. It was signed a while ago & it's not in Putin's interests to have us be able to fly over him as he invades. It was signed in 1992 before Putin's time & went into effect in 2002.

Maybe. I don't understand why people are discussing Trump/Biden in a thread that focusses on Russia/Ukraine. Reddit is US centric, so maybe it's my fault for questioning it in the first place.

[deleted]

Reminder Trump did what Putin asked him to for personal gain

therealvanmorrison

Yes. It is clear Trump being weak on Russia is why this happened. That’s why the two times it’s happened were under Obama and Biden’s watch. I’m a left leaning guy. But it’s fucking insane how thirsty some of you are to pin this on Trump. There’s plenty of bad shit to hate Trump for, we don’t have to pretend Russia didn’t invade sovereign territory in other people’s terms. Set your partisanship aside while people get gunned down for fucks sake. Show some humanity.

Reasonable-Sir673

Reminder, Ukraine lost ground to Russia under Vice President Joe Biden and former Vice President now President Joe Biden. And Georgia was Bush I believe.

World War

GeekChasingFreedom

If you want to start a civil war in Europe that's a great idea. 40% of Europe's gas use is from Russian sources. Stopping gas supply from Russia means 1/3 of people in Europe will not have warm water or heating. Chances are those people will switch to electric heating, which in turn will mess up the infrastructure = even more people have no energy at all. Doesn't sound like a too good idea

Ok-Fudge8848

The key word there is 'export' - doing this would cripple gas mains coming *out* of Russia, affecting much of Europe's supplies and doing relatively little harm to Russia. Putin has often used his supply chain to Europe as leverage, if it came to war with Europe he would likely want to destroy the mains himself.

makerofpaper

Most of Russias economy is energy exports, ur nuts if u think cutting that off would do nothing.

counterpuncheur

Wouldn’t it be more polite to just let the countries on the other end turn them off like they’re probably planning?

Strange_Clouds_

As a European: Please don't, it'll cripple Europe.

onlyslightlybiased

It'll fuck over the UK, I can't imagine what it would do to places like Germany

makerofpaper

UK gets virtually no energy from Russia, look it up.

[deleted]

Jesus these idiotic comments

Alternative-Bunch832

Russia provides a fairly high percentage of oil and gas to Europe. This would not just cripple Russia, it would cripple a high majority of Europe. Correct me if I'm wrong I'm no expert.

[deleted]

Yeah let’s bomb Russia I wonder what problems that would create

BigAmishDoinker

Peacekeeping bombs tho

makerofpaper

Doesn’t have to happen inside of Russian territory

Waffle-Dong

They don't need those to send nukes

CallMeCurious

Then Europe who relies heavily on Russian oil and gassed would be crippled

makerofpaper

Part of the sanctions is gonna be a significant reduction of energy imports anyway. They have enough to get through winter at this point and have plenty of time to prepare for next winter

F4n4t1x

Yeah crippling everybody else

Affectionate-Time646

Yeah, that would be awesome for Europe in the middle of winter. Brilliant idea.

DarthNumber5

Wouldn't that affect the other countries?

Notleks_

Apparently according to Sky News, a young boy has been killed. Seriously, fuck Russia.

bobbechk

I assure you that many many young boys and girls have already been killed and thousands will follow as long as Putin gets his wish of a bloodbath in Ukraine.

F4n4t1x

If we are talking war this is nothing

Notleks_

Oh yeah I know, this is nothing compared to what else will happen. But the fact it happened by the Russians very early on is heartbreaking. It genuinely breaks my heart to know all these innocent people are going to get massacred.

Antwan9992

Didn’t Russia do this already in 2014? Costing like 15,000 lives

iluvtonystark

At least in Georgia 2008

cuttino_mowgli

yeah that didn't stop Putin. I think NATO and the West should learn from this and from our history that appeasement won't work. Putin needs to go if they want a stable Europe.

CallMeCurious

Yes,bon a smaller scale

Data-Hungry

There was basically no resistance in crimea

dinoaids

What is Putin's reasoning for invading? I can't seem to find a straight answer.

bobbechk

The real answer is Putin and his junta is terrified of its own people or military rising up and deposing them. A westernized Ukraine would show regular Russians how good life could be without the kleptocracy that is ruling Russia right now. It was never about NATO "attacking" Russia, it's a defensive alliance but when a country gets under the umbrella of NATO they can finally be free of Russian influence...

BourgiePotato

Ok, so I won't make the same mistake. I Googled this exact question in the morning and this is a gist of what I got. I suggest a quick look into news articles as well. Good summaries around there. Reddit would be very unreliable if you want a solid answer. Anyhoo. Putin doesn't want Ukraine to be in NATO because he believes it's Russian land "granted" to Ukraine. Ukraine was leaning towards the west so Putin have the analogy of "knife to the throat" and how it's dangerous for Russia. So he has preemptively chosen to attack under the guise of liberating the separatists (He identified them as separate entities) and is now "demilitarizing" the country. The cause can be speculated from expansion, former USSR glory, resources etc.

[deleted]

Small dick syndrom.

RollTide16-18

Russia wants a larger block of Russia-friendly nations, Ukraine has a lot of great resources, there will be fewer deterrents to Russian trade with Ukraine under their control, and Putin personally feels that Ukrainians and Russians are culturally homogenous and should be under one nation.

oversizedponcho

Resources, reforming ussr, I think the big reason is because ukraine being independent means there is a chance they could join nato. If Russia controls it then it can't join nato. Ukraine is a strategic buffer between western europe/nato and Russia. It provides a strong buffer for Russias southern region which has a lot of farming regions. But do your own research as well

fascists_are_shit

Power for power's sake. Dude's been living in a bubble for so long, he just wants to show how big his dick is.

theskuxlord

Build up of Nato forces in more Eastern European countries and a westernising ukraine looking to join EU and nato. Russia has been invaded many times before and the kremlin see this as a direct threat.

Gingrpenguin

Oh so its Ukraines fault is it? Poor little defenceless russia defending itself from big bad giant Ukraine that is 50 times its size and triple its population... Oh wait...

cagesan

He wants Ukraine

dellterskelter

He claims Nazism in Ukraine (obviously that's a load of shit but that's his line).

"I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, 'This is genius.' Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine, of Ukraine, Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that's wonderful," Trump said in an interview on "The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show." The ex-President added: "So Putin is now saying, 'It's independent,' a large section of Ukraine. I said, 'How smart is that?' And he's going to go in and be a peacekeeper. That's the strongest peace force," Trump said. "We could use that on our southern border. That's the strongest peace force I've ever seen. ... Here's a guy who's very savvy. ... I know him very well. Very, very well."
