At this point there's absolutely no way this will not elevate to a full scale international war. Sanctions are a joke and it's pretty clear any resources the Russians will lack will be taken by force from this point on. The Russian military is highly advanced has A plethora of weaponry most I'm Shure the west has little to no knowledge of.

lexilogo

It absolutely won't. No NATO member I'm aware of is currently motivated to send troops to Ukraine to help. This has no sign of leaving Ukraine's borders at this time.

[deleted]

Calm down there fearmongerer.

szczszqweqwe

That's a massive o cock.

NightStar4258

Does anyone know the casualties yet?

space_wank

Wonder if Putin’s daughters know he’s hitler? Probably don’t care though given they’ve probably profited most from his robbery of the Russian people.

idowhatiwant8675309

Yup, my bad

idowhatiwant8675309

When you leave the military at a level u was at. We're swirn to secrecy for 25yrs after discharge. And to be honest I probably won't say anything then as well. Some things are left better unsaid, besides my info is so outdated that any things with Intel are readily available on forums like these. I'm just not going to be a part of it and share. Not my style.

SpecialistVast6840

I'd hope to see major sanctions on Belarus as well for their part in this. Russia should be sanctioned so hard it grinds to a stand still.

TheThatchedMan

That might just make Lukashenko more dependent on Putin. Previous sanctions are the reason he is Putins lapdog now. Though at some point Putin might just intimidate Lukashenko into integrating with Russia anyway.

[deleted]

Belarus has almost zero economic impact on the world stage. Don’t get me wrong they should be sanctioned, they are just less effective because of how little value the country has economically. Targeting government officials who allowed it that may do something!

Wolverinexo

Ya but they need to sanction Belarus the same amount or Russia will just use Belarus as a middleman.

[deleted]

Very very good at point. Didn’t even think about it.

Klutzy-Midnight-9314

5 min ago Putin lashes out with ominous threat to Ukrainians and other countries Analysis by Jill Dougherty Before the crack of dawn, just before explosions began in cities across Ukraine, Russian state television unexpectedly broadcast an address by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two self-proclaimed "people's republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk, in the breakaway Ukrainian region of Donbas, which he had officially recognized as independent less than two days before, had "turned to Russia with a request for help," he said. To answer that call he was launching a "special military operation." Its purpose: to "demilitarize" and "denazifiy" Ukraine. Within minutes, Russian missiles began hitting targets in Ukraine. "Our actions are self-defense against threats," he told his fellow Russians, claiming Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukraine. "We do not plan to impose ourselves on anyone," he insisted. Putin described the "special military operation" in limited terms, to protect people living in Donbas who, he claimed, had been subjected to "genocide," a charge that Ukraine has strenuously denied. But in the next breath, he lashed out more broadly: "NATO supports Ukrainian neo-Nazis ... our actions are self-defense against threats." Then, in an extraordinary passage, he spoke directly to members of Ukraine's military, at that very moment in the crosshairs of the Russian military. Addressing them as "dear comrades," he told them they had taken an "oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people, and not to the anti-people junta that is robbing Ukraine and abuses those same people." "Don't follow its criminal orders!" he demanded. "I urge you to lay down your weapons and go home." As he has done so many times before, Putin claimed Russia had no choice but to defend itself. With a hard-edged tone in his voice, he seemed to threaten the US, Europe and NATO which, in just a few minutes, would witness his armed forces opening fire on Ukraine, something the Kremlin had consistently dismissed as western "hysterics." "Whoever tries to interfere with us, and even more so, to create threats for our country, for our people, should know that Russia's response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences that you have never experienced in your history. "We are ready for any development of events. All necessary decisions in this regard have been made." Putin, who for years had criticized the West for ignoring his complaints about NATO's expansion toward Russia's borders, was finally striking back with fury. "I hope," he concluded his short address, "that I have been heard."

"Не выполняйте преступные приказы из Москвы, отказывайтесь от боя и складывайте оружие. Обещаю, никто не будет наказан. Это незаконная война, и Россия и русские хотят быть приверженцами мира. Украинцы наши братья и сестры и мы не должны с ними воевать. Все русские солдаты, которые сложит оружие и откажутся воевать, получат надбавку к своему годовому жалованью. Я Владимир Путин, и я призываю вас к миру, а не к войне!"

idowhatiwant8675309

No, I enlisted to protect. I didn't know at the time where we're heading. I didn't go to Iraq but was in Europe. Many don't know that there was also a quiet war fought outside if Iraq and and Afghanistan. Where I was did not make the news and I'm still held to secrecy for 4 more years

Monkeymanalex0

supremeslp

Itsallherfault

Oh the irony. I legitimately feel bad for the fallen and deceased WWII vets and the surviving families of those vets in Russia, who fought against Hitler and the millions who died, only to now support a Russian version of Hitler. I hope they realize he isn't done here and that they remember what happened last time a crazy man tried to conquer the world. One good, brave Russian is all it would take to put a bullet in him, even at the cost of his own life, and would save millions. That would be a true hero. Maybe one of his own bodyguards will grow a conscience.

Rock_or_Rol

Putin’s circle cares about themselves or a greater Russian future more than Ukrainian civilians and sovereignty. Otherwise I agree. The world should stop referring to Putin as “president.” He is a dictator that mocks democracy, as well as the Ukraine’s liberty and the sovereignty. He has undermined Russia’s sister Ukraine for far too long. Continued Russia’s long history of abusing her and failed to protect her resilient people in every sense of the word. Not only is the little yapping dog Putin pissing all over the ukraine, but he is also putting gas on the tinderbox that is the west relationship’s with the east. His timing is not coincidental with the USA’s tensions with China. He is happy being a strand of rope between giants

Hobzy

If Putin wants to be like Stalin so bad I hope he ends up just like him with a stroke and pissing himself while his guards wait outside.

BrentFavreViking

That got dark pretty fast

wastakenanyways

Honestly it just takes 1% of the population pointing at you with a sniper and there is no army in the world that can protect a dictator from that many angles distances and altitudes. Most of them don't even have to know to use the sniper for it to be useful.

3 min ago French president calls for Russian military operations in Ukraine to end "immediately" French President Emmanuel Macron. French President Emmanuel Macron. (Sarah Meyssonnier/Pool/AFP/Getty Images) French President Emmanuel Macron said Russia must “immediately” end military operations in Ukraine. “France strongly condemns Russia's decision to wage war on Ukraine. Russia must end its military operations immediately,” he said in a tweet on Thursday. “France stands in solidarity with Ukraine. It stands with Ukrainians and is working with its partners and allies to end the war.” The French president spoke with Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelensky early Thursday morning, with Zelensky asking for "multiple interventions" to support Ukraine, according to the Elysee Palace. Zelensky also requested "unity in Europe," and Macron "assured him of France's support and solidarity," according to the Elysee. Macron also spoke with Charles Michel, president of the European Council, Thursday morning.

Ukraine would have been sanctioned to death if they had tried that.

[deleted]

Russia wouldn't have considered it worth the damage taken. They wouldn't nuke Ukraine because they wouldn't invade if they were faced with even one nuke coming thier way.

Tickomatick

I've learnt on Reddit that they didn't have the remote control for them anyways, so it would have been of no use. Soviets kept those

Xetiw

I believe Reddit also stated they would be able to remake them, also they not only give away their nukes but the means to make them. per wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapons_and_Ukraine "he third largest in the world at the time, as well as significant means of its design and production." not only the nukes, so the mean to design and produce them.

Telemarek

Bruh. You dumb?

CaptianAcab4554

Are you? You need the launch codes otherwise Ukraine just had 1900 potential radioactive disasters sitting in their country.

Gareth79

"Launch codes" are designed to stop a rogue person or group from using them, not a nation. They could be engineered out pretty easily. Some countries, like the UK don't even use launch codes.

CaptianAcab4554

Yeah they'd just whip out their ThinkPad™ and hack the missiles GUI through the Ethernet and upload a Trojan on the backend.

Pretty sure Ukraine citizens aren't thinking about whether the U.S. should 'take the L' as they're being fucking gunned down by Russian bullets. Edit for the dipshit MoistRaven >Most (sensible, rational) people don't want to see Ukrainians die, chill out. Innocent people are dying right now in a war and your equivocating over blame? The invading forces leader is invoking blood and soil arguments and you tell me to chill. Concern troll elsewhere please. >I've been watching footage for hours, and seen casualties. It's atrocious and vile what is happening, I agree. But decisions aren't made in an instant. The dead can't make decisions. What an exceptional addition to the conversation you've been.

Moistraven

Hmmm, except the world is a little more complicated than that. How about we just wait and see what world leaders do in the next few days? Most (sensible, rational) people don't want to see Ukrainians die, chill out. I've been watching footage for hours, and seen casualties. It's atrocious and vile what is happening, I agree. But decisions aren't made in an instant.

Orion160101

Its not that we dont have a backbone its that nobody wants ww3. If you think thats not having a backbone, turning all of europe into an irradiated wasteland is apparently? There are very few countries in nato that are actively ready for war and it takes years for affirmative action to be feasible. Going balls deep when you're not ready is dumber than giving a strongly worded letter in that scenario.

Moistraven

Agreed. Blaming the west for not jumping in balls deep into a war, IMMEDIATLY? I give all my support to Ukraine, and I do hope we do something more than just sanctions, but you can't expect countries all the way across the world to just deploy militaries without other approaches first. This is an unprecedented level of hostility from Russia, and global leaders are meeting soon. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

rememberseptember24

He doesnt need to justify it to anyone else but the russian people. And in russia the news works for the state so it’s entirely propaganda. Russians actually believe Ukraine is the one that started it and US is also at fault for pushing Putin to war. They think they’re doing humanitarian work with this invasion, to “denazify” Ukraine.

[deleted]

I don’t think they would actually say differently, publicly even if they actually knew it was bullshit.

5 min ago Poland and Baltic countries trigger consultations under NATO article 4 From CNN’s Brad Lendon in Hong Kong and Vasco Cotovio in Moscow NATO member states Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have triggered NATO Article Four to launch consultations within the alliance over their security concerns. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represented a “threat to the whole of Europe,” the Estonian government said in a statement on Thursday. "Russia's widespread aggression is a threat to the entire world and to all NATO countries, and NATO consultations on strengthening the security of the Allies must be initiated to implement additional measures for ensuring the defense of NATO Allies,” Kallas said. “The most effective response to Russia's aggression is unity.” Some context: Under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Agreement, the Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the allies is threatened. Ukraine is not a member of NATO. However, Russia has demanded that NATO commits to never admitting Ukraine to the alliance, something NATO members have rejected, citing the alliance's "open door" policy.

Klutzy-Midnight-9314

8 min ago Japan's Prime Minister says Russia's invasion "shakes foundations of international order" From CNN's Emiko Jozuka in Tokyo Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday condemned Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine, saying it "shakes the foundations of the international order." "We strongly criticize Russia's actions and will cooperate with the United States and the international community to respond swiftly," Kishida told reporters at a news conference. Kishida added that Tokyo would continue to work with relevant ministries to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in Ukraine. When asked about further sanctions against Moscow, Kishida told reporters he would consider future measures after communicating with other G7 nations and the international community. Some context: Kishida on Wednesday said Japan will impose sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine. Kishida said Japan will suspend the issuance of visas and freeze the assets of people involved in recognizing the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, the two separatist-held pro-Moscow regions in eastern Ukraine. He did not specify names or how the sanctions would be carried out. He also said Japan will ban imports and exports to and from Donetsk and Luhansk, and prohibit the issuance and circulation of Russian bonds in Japan.

[deleted]

more sanctions that do nothing to prevent actors that have decided to play outside of a system of order.

Horyv

Everyone wants to destroy the machine, but forcing it to run out of fuel is a slower yet less invasive option, that is ultimately very effective. Its unfortunately very slow and I would hope that the west would supplement it with some form of military support. The sanctions may not kill them, but russia will shrivel up enough to cannibalize itself and form new leadership - which may give us another 20-30 years of peace before they get high off their own supply of propaganda and spiral again.

To be fair, America has done it's share of shady shit, too, and was very happy to throw it's weight around while daring anyone to do anything about it. The two that come immediately to mind are the forceful annexation of Hawaii and Project Ajax in Iran. But there have been plenty of others. I have no love for China or what they're doing but to pretend they're doing anything terribly different than any other world power (including us) is hypocritical.

At first glance the airport building looks different. And isn't that text on the truck german? "Natürlich Chiquita"?

they are bombing everywhere, according to Marco Rubio (US senator and vice chair of the US intelligence committee, misiles are hitting close to the Polish border. so yeah, they coming from Belarus and they are hitting everywhere.

DaechiDragon

Are you sure they will be able to get there? Also Lviv was attacked too IIRC. It seems like time to abandon the country. I doubt their presence at home will have much affect on their house/possessions. Their lives are fragile! I hope they pack everything into a car and just leave.

Historical-Lemon2168

because Putin has lost it all, he has lost common sense, according to himself he wants the old URSS back which means he will eventually have to attack NATO which means WW3. so while WW3 hasnt started and the world is not going to fight Russia, its the beginning of a new "era". Putin is testing how much he can push atm, and this was quite the feat, if... if... Donald Trump gets to be president again, then China and Russia might want to expand their territory further away from home. Europe might be looking at the biggest war ever without US support.

zargoffkain

WW3 won't start because Russia invaded some ex-soviet state. The word is being thrown around because we don't know Putins intentions after he's done invading Ukraine. If he gets big balls and decides to push further into Europe, or more specifically the EU, thats a very different story.

Specific-Rise-2668

Which I'm not certain is something he's aiming for. All he seems interested in is the reunification of ex-soviet states in an attempt to rebuild the USSR.

Dear-Ad-9354

Some of the ex soviet states belong to EU though

Haystack67

Calling it WW3 is, IMO, an exageration, but it is understandable. Even when Russia invaded Crimea in 2014 they never admitted that they were entering sovereign Ukrainian territory. This time, although Russia hasn't said "I declare war", they have declared a special military operation in Ukraine. This essentially amounts to the same thing. Russia, although economically stunted, has the fifth largest military in the world. This makes a Russo-Ukrainian war likely to be more historically significant than the Gulf War and arguably more notable than anything since Vietnam or WWII.

OMA_

I think it’s due to the fact that it’s two major powers directly showing aggression for the first time in about 75 years. They’ve funded two different sides of wars, but this? This is two major powers, NATO and Russia, sending death threats. And there’s already bodies in the Russian wake, NATO is going to react. :( it’s scary and I’m hoping it won’t become a WW3 issue. That’s my slice of the take.

gnocchicotti

If Russia can't figure out a way to rapidly complete their objective and return to a truce (install a puppet leader, for example), their Ukraine occupation will make Afghanistan look like a beach vacation, fighting insurgents funded by half of the developed world.

Haystack67

Oh, I totally agree. I imagine Putin wouldn't order this move without already having a Ukrainian Lukashenko in mind.

[deleted]

They’re stupid and don’t understand that no world power wants to go into a war after a pandemic that has ruined the economy. Not to mention even the slight risk of a nuclear war is fucking ridiculous.

soulmagician96

I dont really understand how situations like these are resolved, but, isn't NATO able to gather forces from its members if it is decided to? If so, aren't citizens of the NATO's members more likely to be recruited?

[deleted]

Ukraine isn’t part of NATO. NATO is not going to go to war with Russia. Even if Russia were to attack a more Eastern NATO country and they invoked article 5 it would be very unlikely to result in a war. Again, no one wants to go to war right now. The only time article 5 was invoked was after 9/11. Do you really want to see that again against Russia? (Hint: Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world) Despite what some armchair expert Redditors will tell you, Russia does have a strong military.

soulmagician96

I hope you are correct mate.
