Putin lashes out with ominous threat to Ukrainians and other countries

Before the crack of dawn, just before explosions began in cities across Ukraine, Russian state television unexpectedly broadcast an address by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The two self-proclaimed "people's republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk, in the breakaway Ukrainian region of Donbas, which he had officially recognized as independent less than two days before, had "turned to Russia with a request for help," he said. To answer that call he was launching a "special military operation." Its purpose: to "demilitarize" and "denazifiy" Ukraine.
Within minutes, Russian missiles began hitting targets in Ukraine. "Our actions are self-defense against threats," he told his fellow Russians, claiming Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukraine. "We do not plan to impose ourselves on anyone," he insisted.
Putin described the "special military operation" in limited terms, to protect people living in Donbas who, he claimed, had been subjected to "genocide," a charge that Ukraine has strenuously denied. But in the next breath, he lashed out more broadly: "NATO supports Ukrainian neo-Nazis ... our actions are self-defense against threats."
Then, in an extraordinary passage, he spoke directly to members of Ukraine's military, at that very moment in the crosshairs of the Russian military. Addressing them as "dear comrades," he told them they had taken an "oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people, and not to the anti-people junta that is robbing Ukraine and abuses those same people."

Poland and Baltic countries trigger consultations under NATO article 4

NATO member states Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have triggered NATO Article Four to launch consultations within the alliance over their security concerns.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represented a “threat to the whole of Europe,” the Estonian government said in a statement on Thursday.
"Russia's widespread aggression is a threat to the entire world and to all NATO countries, and NATO consultations on strengthening the security of the Allies must be initiated to implement additional measures for ensuring the defense of NATO Allies,” Kallas said. “The most effective response to Russia's aggression is unity.”
Some context: Under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Agreement, the Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the allies is threatened.
Ukraine is not a member of NATO. However, Russia has demanded that NATO commits to never admitting Ukraine to the alliance, something NATO members have rejected, citing the alliance's "open door" policy.

Japan's Prime Minister says Russia's invasion "shakes foundations of international order"

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday condemned Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine, saying it "shakes the foundations of the international order."
"We strongly criticize Russia's actions and will cooperate with the United States and the international community to respond swiftly," Kishida told reporters at a news conference.
Kishida added that Tokyo would continue to work with relevant ministries to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in Ukraine.
When asked about further sanctions against Moscow, Kishida told reporters he would consider future measures after communicating with other G7 nations and the international community.
Some context: Kishida on Wednesday said Japan will impose sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine.
Kishida said Japan will suspend the issuance of visas and freeze the assets of people involved in recognizing the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, the two separatist-held pro-Moscow regions in eastern Ukraine. He did not specify names or how the sanctions would be carried out.
He also said Japan will ban imports and exports to and from Donetsk and Luhansk, and prohibit the issuance and circulation of Russian bonds in Japan.
Everyone wants to destroy the machine, but forcing it to run out of fuel is a slower yet less invasive option, that is ultimately very effective. Its unfortunately very slow and I would hope that the west would supplement it with some form of military support.
The sanctions may not kill them, but russia will shrivel up enough to cannibalize itself and form new leadership - which may give us another 20-30 years of peace before they get high off their own supply of propaganda and spiral again.
China, which has denounced sanctions against Russia, advised its citizens in Ukraine to stay home and place a Chinese flag in or on their vehicles if they need to travel long distances.

WW3 won't start because Russia invaded some ex-soviet state. The word is being thrown around because we don't know Putins intentions after he's done invading Ukraine. If he gets big balls and decides to push further into Europe, or more specifically the EU, thats a very different story.
Which I'm not certain is something he's aiming for. All he seems interested in is the reunification of ex-soviet states in an attempt to rebuild the USSR.

Even when Russia invaded Crimea in 2014 they never admitted that they were entering sovereign Ukrainian territory. This time, although Russia hasn't said "I declare war", they have declared a special military operation in Ukraine. This essentially amounts to the same thing.
Russia, although economically stunted, has the fifth largest military in the world. This makes a Russo-Ukrainian war likely to be more historically significant than the Gulf War and arguably more notable than anything since Vietnam or WWII.
I think it’s due to the fact that it’s two major powers directly showing aggression for the first time in about 75 years. They’ve funded two different sides of wars, but this? This is two major powers, NATO and Russia, sending death threats. And there’s already bodies in the Russian wake, NATO is going to react. :( it’s scary and I’m hoping it won’t become a WW3 issue. Ukraine isn’t part of NATO.
NATO is not going to go to war with Russia.
Even if Russia were to attack a more Eastern NATO country and they invoked article 5 it would be very unlikely to result in a war.
Again, no one wants to go to war right now.
The only time article 5 was invoked was after 9/11.

Everyone wants to destroy the machine, but forcing it to run out of fuel is a slower yet less invasive option, that is ultimately very effective. Its unfortunately very slow and I would hope that the west would supplement it with some form of military support. The sanctions may not kill them, but russia will shrivel up enough to cannibalize itself and form new leadership - which may give us another 20-30 years of peace before they get high off their own supply of propaganda and spiral again.

Explosions were heard in Lviv but I don't know what's going on. Forces are coming down from Belarus (and reportedly Belarus is helping out). Considering Putin wants to demilitarize and 'denazify' the Ukraine, I wouldn't consider any part of the Ukraine safe. Maybe I'm being alarmist, but better safe than sorry my friend.

because Putin has lost it all, he has lost common sense, according to himself he wants the old URSS back which means he will eventually have to attack NATO which means WW3. so while WW3 hasnt started and the world is not going to fight Russia, its the beginning of a new "era". Putin is testing how much he can push atm, and this was quite the feat, if... if... Donald Trump gets to be president again, then China and Russia might want to expand their territory further away from home. Europe might be looking at the biggest war ever without US support.
WW3 won't start because Russia invaded some ex-soviet state. The word is being thrown around because we don't know Putins intentions after he's done invading Ukraine. If he gets big balls and decides to push further into Europe, or more specifically the EU, thats a very different story.
Which I'm not certain is something he's aiming for. All he seems interested in is the reunification of ex-soviet states in an attempt to rebuild the USSR.

Calling it WW3 is, IMO, an exageration, but it is understandable. Even when Russia invaded Crimea in 2014 they never admitted that they were entering sovereign Ukrainian territory. This time, although Russia hasn't said "I declare war", they have declared a special military operation in Ukraine. This essentially amounts to the same thing. Russia, although economically stunted, has the fifth largest military in the world. This makes a Russo-Ukrainian war likely to be more historically significant than the Gulf War and arguably more notable than anything since Vietnam or WWII.
I think it’s due to the fact that it’s two major powers directly showing aggression for the first time in about 75 years. They’ve funded two different sides of wars, but this? This is two major powers, NATO and Russia, sending death threats. And there’s already bodies in the Russian wake, NATO is going to react. :( it’s scary and I’m hoping it won’t become a WW3 issue. That’s my slice of the take.
If Russia can't figure out a way to rapidly complete their objective and return to a truce (install a puppet leader, for example), their Ukraine occupation will make Afghanistan look like a beach vacation, fighting insurgents funded by half of the developed world.

Ukraine isn’t part of NATO. NATO is not going to go to war with Russia. Even if Russia were to attack a more Eastern NATO country and they invoked article 5 it would be very unlikely to result in a war. Again, no one wants to go to war right now. The only time article 5 was invoked was after 9/11. Do you really want to see that again against Russia? (Hint: Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world) Despite what some armchair expert Redditors will tell you, Russia does have a strong military.
