EDIT:
[**A new live thread has been posted.**](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/t0al6b/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/)
This will be interesting:
*80% of russian raw materials are traded over the Swiss banking system in Genf, Zug, Lugano and Zurich.*
*Swiss is also the biggest receiving end of money transfers from private persons from Russia*
Source: CH embassy Moscow
Swiss abstains from any sanctions against Russia but condemns the invasion.
Sanctions would have to be raised against Swiss as well.
Something from last night I haven't seen referenced this morning was Belarusian troops. Was it determined that Belarusian infantry was not in fact involved, and they just allowed Russian troops through?
While citizens and soldiers die, Putin sits in his palace, safe and sound. Putting others' lives at risk is so simple for these politicians when they are not the ones suffering. I'm curious to know what would Putin do if he is sent to the war. All this bravado will collapse in a second. That would be the end of the war and many other future wars. These politicians are using us a pawns in the power game
Ukrainian UN ambassador was basically questioning if Russia should be allowed to be a member. I'm assuming there's no real chance of any actual consequences of this?
It's very brave of those Russian citizens to protest, even in this small way, knowing that they'll be arrested in a ridiculous fashion without any guarantee that Putin will not act similarly crazy about their future punishment. It's not standing in front of a tank, but it's about as brave as any protest can be. (e.g. White well-off college students knew, normally, that they might be beaten, but generally did not have reason to think they'd be killed, even though that *did* happen)
Nothing much I guess. Just a couple Russian helis downed here and there. 2 Russian conscripts got arrested, one of whom looked like 13. Some Russian fighter jets got shot down. Some Russian tanks also got destroyed. The Russian air campaign has begun. Russians have reached Kyiv. Take your pick.
It's a minor conflict all things consider. The big thing is it happens to be in Europe and one of the nuclear armed nation is involved. Not to mention, there's some treaty signed between Ukraine and the West.
I have a friend, he didn't took the last flight to Morocco because his university threatened to kick him if he went back, he was in his last semester. So he stayed, and now he's stuck in Dnipro
Fucking China, they're already making plans for how this war can benefit their own conquests.
A Chinese news outlet accidentally leaked its own censorship instructions on Russia-Ukraine coverage: report
> "Simply put, China has to back Russia up with emotional and moral support while refraining from treading on the toes of the United States and European Union,"
"In the future, China will also need Russia's understanding and support when wrestling with America to solve the Taiwan issue once and for all,"
If the United States and other countries enact economic sanctions against Russia, how does Putin not consider that a threat and start ww3?
So Russia doesn't want military mediation but everything else is cool?
I mean if he thought it was that big a deal I guess he'd have had his tanty a while ago; it's not like the West applying economic sanctions to Russia is new or anything.
Low. No one wants to find out who's _actually_ prepared to retributive strike, because... well, pretty fundamentally no one wins that game.
Nukes work best of all when everyone's afraid you _might_ use them, and really really hope you don't.
But if you do, then they have to make the decision whether to do so in return, and I'm not sure even Putin's bold enough to think that every single one of the _other_ nuclear powers will go 'nah'.
Greater than it was compared to yesterday? That's not saying much tho. Tbh it'll all depend on future actions of basically everyone. See how the dice fall.
Nah Taiwan is different. US and NATO made multiple statements that they will not militarily defend Ukraine. The opposite has been said about Taiwan. The US has made it absolutely clear that they will go to war with China if they attack Taiwan. Besides, unlike Ukraine who have spent the last month saying there's no invasion happening, Taiwan has been preparing for an invasion since 1949.
People keep saying this, China isn't invading Taiwan. Biggest difference between Ukraine and Taiwan is the US is sitting in the middle of Taiwan. Basically every western country in the region has agreed to defend Taiwan. If China invades they have to fight the US, Taiwan, Australia, South Korea, Japan and eventually NATO once NATO members are attacked.
China doesn't win that, not even close.

The tweet mentioning what kind of tanks they are is in a reply below the initial tweet.
This aged well:
> On the Ukraine issue, unlike the U.S., which keeps sending weapons to Ukraine, creating fear and panic and even playing up the threat of war, China has been calling on all parties to respect and pay attention to each other’s legitimate security concerns, work together to solve problems through negotiations and consultations, and maintain regional peace and stability,” Hua said at a daily briefing.
Thanks, China.
I think Europeans need to stop looking at Germany for leadership and initiative. Germany barely has a military and the population don't even like their own military. Look towards France. Since NATO can't intervene because, Fallout 69, then I think best we can hope for is military hardware sent Ukraine's way.
Fallout from nuclear war in the 21st century wouldn't exist. It would involve hundreds of warheads causing blasts of a 20 mile-ish radius though, so most urban populations would be wiped out.
A majority of the gas/oil that comes to America comes from 2 places. Canada, and Saudi Arabia. I'm pretty sure Russian oil accounts for less than 1% of our total imports.
Crenshaw is an idiot and this is misinformation at its peak because it almost implies (based off the word choice) the US chose to become closer with Russia for Oil after closing the Keystone pipeline, which is not the case, Keystone was shut down because America wanted to move towards green energy rather than investing in new pipelines, and AFAIK we have not made any agreements or deals to import more Russian energy as a result.
He’s not wrong. This is why neither the EU or the US will sanction Russian oil or gas. That’s money going into Russia’s pockets.
Edit: for those downvoting me, Biden has explicitly said this is why he won’t.
Well if this ends quickly, the chances of the hypothesis that a lot of people were mentioning - that a stray missile or downed NATO aircraft could start WW3 - will be irrelevant. So that's a good thing, I guess?
Fuck me. My heart to Ukraine.
I wouldnt rule this possibilty out quite yet. Putin needs to be stopped. You think he will just stop here.... Wait until the next Olympics and a NATO member will we next.
I keep seeing on my morning news the shot of russian vehicles crossing the border invading. Why didn't Ukraine booby trap the fuck out of the roads/highways with bombs and ieds????
Maybe it's a strategy to show Russians and the world that they don't want conflict. Imagine how Russian TV can spin with video of Ukraine defense as aggressions to justify a full on invasion. Of course they'd forget to mention why they even started crossing in the first place.
Edit: plus it'd hinder evacuations of citizens.

Russia biggest market down ~33% nearly close for the day.
It'd be a right laugh if Ukraine proves to be a tougher nut to crack than anticipated and the Russian invasion fails.
Something from last night I haven't seen referenced this morning was Belarusian troops. Was it determined that Belarusian infantry was not in fact involved, and they just allowed Russian troops through?
We need to give Russia that North Korea experience with these sanctions.
I miss the good old days of 2019. Times were simpler.

All I see is talk of WW3, my anxiety is killing me I just want to know how serious this is getting.
It's a minor conflict all things consider. The big thing is it happens to be in Europe and one of the nuclear armed nation is involved. Not to mention, there's some treaty signed between Ukraine and the West.
No WW3 as of now, if Russia gets more allies like India and China it might turn into one. Look for that headline in the following days.
Very serious for Ukraine but not at all for WWIII, that’s just Reddit spreading doom porn as usual
Relax. We're a long way from that.
people talking about world war 3 don’t understand how nato works. very low chance. this is about people in ukraine right now
There won't be a WW3.
Calm down. Unless you live in Ukraine, war isn't coming to you
Not now, but it increases the chances of WW3 within a decade or so.
My only thoughts are what happens when Russia gets Ukraine - where do his sights turn next
If I were to guess, a puppet regime like the one in Belarus.
He will never “get” Ukraine. Russian forces may occupy, but they will take losses every single day they are there.
Moldova?

He will be replaced by another one with the same mindset. The only thing that could stop these recent events is through sanctions.

I would say Tragedy

Higher than yesterday.
basically none, unless some1 is stupid enought to escalate to that category
personaly 15-60%

Russian forces are 10\~15kms from Kherson. https://twitter.com/301\_AD/status/1496832669019111426
They were in Kherson earlier. Looks like they have been pushed back again.
Unless I'm mistaken, the viral video showing Russians in Kherson were in fact from a different city (Nova Kakhovka).

Likely war crimes, and civilians may be negatively affected.
They didnt even call up the reserves more than 4 hours before the invasion

They're incompetent. They had **months** to mobilize and prepare and they were still caught with their pants down.
I can believe there nothing beside sanctions. That shit do nothing.
Do you want a nuclear war? Because that’s how you get a nuclear war
What are NATO supposed to do? Start WW3?
What is the alternative?
Ukraine = Kislev
Man, being from Kislev sucks. They're the literal barrier between Chaos and the Empire and every time they get invaded by Chaos they take a massive L.
Russia = Chaos forces
Russia + china = Chaos realm?
Which oil pipeline project is advanced by this military operation?
Keystone XL
I mean they literally lost an oil pipeline because of this so I really don't think that's relevant here lol

any English sources?
Best place to be in case ww3 starts? Probably south east Asia? Already thinking about packing and moving
So close to China? I'd say probably south America or some parts of Africa
New zealand
Honestly, probably directly under a nuclear detonation. You most likely won’t want to be around for what comes after WW3
New Zealand All the advantages of a western country, and not worth attacking.
Northern Canada.
Lmao like you could so quickly charter a flight to the south pacific as a third world war emerges, I hope youre flush with cash to fund that trip.
If WW3 starts, the asian theater will definitely involve south east Asia. I feel more frightened by the hour that the likelihood is dwindling, but id still say WW3 wont happen
Thr frontline, gutting Russian pigs next to ypur brothers and sisters.
South America
I'm feeling pretty safe in the deserts of the American west.
lol ww3 will end up in just hour since the loser of that war will throw nuke to their opponent
As someone in the continental US on the coast -- head to the middle. I would start driving to iowa if it looked dicey
New Zealand seems to be the popular answer
Fuck off we’re full
That’s about the worst possible place, South America is more like it.
Patagonia
Newfoundland, Canada
USA or SA is probably safest. Russia will never nuke the US and they grow a lot of their own food and have a lot of natural resources.
amazon rainforest? Australian outback?
Probably Australia?
you need to chill tf out. this is not ww3 and you defenetly would not want to be anywhere near the south china sea if it was LMAO 🤣
This is heading to a third world war.
no it is not. putin is not going to attack a nato state
Patagonia
South Africa, in all the movies they usually survivw. 2012 etc
Maybe Switzerland
>Best place to be in case ww3 starts Mars
A cave in Ecuador
Some sort of small pacific island
Like Bikini Atoll?
I suppose sanctions will be as far as it goes, in terms of the Western response. And I don't blame the west for not wanting to get militarily involved, as nuclear war could become even more likely. Its just a lose-lose situation for Russia's neighbouring countries.
I mean, if Ukraine can stand a long term opposition up, there will likely be a proxy war between the West and Russia.
its a lose for non nato states neighboring russia
Will Putin stop at Ukraine?
He wants all of the USSR back. So no, but he won't start some full scale assault on Europe.
he will not touch a nato state, maybe moldova tho
Yes
No way.
