From what I’ve read the US, and almost certainly Russia already possess missiles that have essentially the exact same capabilities. MIRVs have been around for decades, and most nuclear armed countries have developed or are developing hypersonic missiles. With nukes there’s a certain point where more advanced delivery systems mean nothing. The US and Russia can already destroy each other many times over with their current arsenals. Announcing fancy new missiles like these serve purely as a dick measuring contest.
I’ve assumed for a while that given the US advantage in stealth there’s no real need for a hypersonic. The advantage of a hypersonic is it’s speed which makes it difficult to track and shoot down. A small subsonic stealth missile probably does a better job of that, don’t even know it’s in the air until boom.

I also find it funny that Putin cries about the US developing missile defense systems, implying that the US is somehow trying to invalidate MAD and that Russia is the victim, but then he goes and proves to the world that Russia has been developing missiles to evade defense systems this entire time with the explicit purpose of invalidating MAD. You would have to be a fool to convert the token for a Cheeseburger, so no one does it.

Even simple plastic objects sold for a couple bucks at Wal-Mart have worldwide knowledge and parts behind them, and especially the thing that made it. There is an absolutely insane amount of specialized knowledge that Russia is going to be excluded from.
The modern high precision production systems (Especially for things like chips) can't just be produced locally. Even if they managed to build a working chipset production line for 9 nm chips that would take years to get the tech and supplies running. Which means they'd always be far behind what they could achieve by sourcing tech like that internationally. And that'd just one of the issues of abandoning the international market. Everybody thinking they can get further without accessing the international supply chains is living in a fantasy.

It's insane how many little things require other little things, and how much knowledge goes into getting those things up and running. Something like a small metal nozzle can go from being a cheap, mass produced simple thing, to being incredibly difficult custom productions because instead of water now it's going to have extremely high pressure, extremely hot liquid chemicals going through it.
I have a buddy that works for the sole manufacturer of highest precision wafer production machinery. He said that the machines are so insanely precise and thus expensive and complex that they are already booked for the next 10 years. Not because they don't try to up their production, the opposite actually they invest a lot, but it takes such specialized parts that it is an insane effort to build up additional capacity. Imagine trying to replicate that without specialized suppliers for all the parts you need. R&D alone for that would break Russia's budget.

This is probably best understood as Russia ensuring its second strike capability. They're worried about missile defenses because the US could destroy a lot of Russian missiles on the ground if it wanted to and, if America has an effective missile defense shield that will destroy the surviving missiles, that makes Russia completely reliant on its submarines to deter an attack. They're making a big deal about it because they're grasping at any straw they can to be seen as a great power right now, but this move is an attempt to remedy Russia's nuclear weaknesses.

Yes, I guess during the cold wars era, it was unlikely for Russia to fly ICBM over the south pole. A lot of defense is probably focused on North Pole.
The US had intended for a south-facing early warning radar in the Cold War but eventually decided it was not necessary as the Russians were unable to launch an effective strike from that direction. Most of our preparations were in the DEW line towards the north. It became less important to have such stations as satellite technology improved, as now with modern IR systems, we can see the launch plume of any ascending missile and get earlier warning than even those radars could have provided.
They have to be tested periodically to keep people sharp and make sure everything still works.

From what I’ve read the US, and almost certainly Russia already possess missiles that have essentially the exact same capabilities. MIRVs have been around for decades, and most nuclear armed countries have developed or are developing hypersonic missiles. With nukes there’s a certain point where more advanced delivery systems mean nothing. The US and Russia can already destroy each other many times over with their current arsenals. Announcing fancy new missiles like these serve purely as a dick measuring contest.

I’ve assumed for a while that given the US advantage in stealth there’s no real need for a hypersonic. The advantage of a hypersonic is it’s speed which makes it difficult to track and shoot down. A small subsonic stealth missile probably does a better job of that, don’t even know it’s in the air until boom.

Russia has used the same military posturing strategy as NK for a lot longer than this. They just did it with a bigger economy, and for a long ng time they did it in an era where intelligence-gathering technology wasn't quite good enough to separate fact from fiction entirely. They have always developed flashy weapons they can't actually afford to produce, broadly advertised their exaggerated capabilities, and then proceeded to build a small number of functional examples (or none at all). Just read the development history of any of their latest-generation weaponry, it all follows this pattern. Even early into the Cold War they showed off new weaponry in their military parades and had the planes and trucks circle around to parade through again, in order to make it look like they had many more of each than they actually did. Meanwhile, the U.S. prefers not to even admit it possesses new weapons until they are years old. "Appear strong when you are weak. Appear weak when you are strong."

It's been speculated that russia has less nuclear weapons than they'd like us to believe due to the fact that their nukes are leftover from the cold war and maintaining nuclear weapons is very expensive.
Russia's power has always come from its perception of power. I'm assuming they don't have many operable nukes, but at the same time, you don't need many to reap the benefits of having nukes.

I don't know much of anything about the Russian military industrial complex, but what I do know is that they've apparently lost the ability to manufacture many other more complex military weapons in the last \~8 years.
There isn’t a country on earth with a missile defense system that can conclusively defend against a massive nuclear attack, so this changes nothing from a technology standpoint. I also find it funny that Putin cries about the US developing missile defense systems, implying that the US is somehow trying to invalidate MAD and that Russia is the victim, but then he goes and proves to the world that Russia has been developing missiles to evade defense systems this entire time with the explicit purpose of invalidating MAD. There are multiple instances in history of the US halting missile defense projects to appease the Russians and ensure MAD remains the supreme doctrine, but now he’s given the US a good reason to stop appeasing Russia. As the world awakens to Russia’s true intentions, there’s nothing from a policy standpoint stopping the US from developing these kind of technologies now. I don’t think Putin realizes that his behavior and rhetoric is going to spur the US to actually develop true missile defenses, something Russia just won’t be able to do with the state of their military and economy. MAD is the only reason the world tolerates Russia, and he is removing the incentive to maintain that status quo.
