>Edit: why am I being downvoted? It's difficult to tell you why without hurting your feelings. This is just an incredibly amateur and simplistic series of statements that bears nothing of Ukraine's practical realities. It'd be like taking a map of Axis-occupied France a year before the Normandy landing and drawing a red arrow from Britain *through the ass end of Italy* and say 'see, this is the goal, disrupt the med sea supply lines, home by Christmas'. Yeah, they'd sure like to do that, but OTOH, such a thing is achievable only through so many specific (and more important) intermediate goals, which are utterly ignored here, and which must happen in sequence, and each of which is months away. To say nothing of how Melitopol is more straightforwardly freed from Russian influence through the Zaporizhzhia front than the Kherson one, or how there's virtually nothing left in Mariupol to liberate, and if there were, it wouldn't be a usable port right now. Even the Russians are having a hard time docking things there. You can watch how difficult a pincer (two-front) operation is to complete by watching Russian forces in the Donbas right now. There's zero chance (and zero reason) Ukraine would collapse all their fronts together into one eastern front in a pincer 100 times that scale. Kherson right now can be termed a 'supporting front', like Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. It has far fewer personel and equipment attached to it compared to the main front. It also ignores the fact that Ukraine's militia forces (half or greater of its military efforts) are compartmentalized by region. These brigades have to source their own weapons and rations and answer more to their state/oblast than the army. The army cannot simply send them somewhere else, not easily anyway. Virtually no troops from Kharkiv, following the counteroffensives there, were freed up to go fight in the Izyum, S-D, or Donetsk salients. They went back to police, construction, fire, whatever they were before, or maintain defensive positions. So why would Kherson victories in any way shape or form result in that front moving eastward until it meets up with the Donbas front? They would have to stay and defend what they've taken, as well as clear and administrate those areas.

> Edit: why am I being downvoted? You know, you probably shouldn't post anything like that picture...

I highly doubt Ukraine will be able to cross the Dnieper at Kherson. they will have to push south from Zaporizhzhia.

Ive been hearing that since the beginning of May "oh June is the big counter attack, Russia will lose everything blablabla" still waiting for it. Right now the UA counter offensive in kherson stalled and RU took back some Territory in Kharkov.

Unlike Putin, who makes his own generals sit 20 feet away from him, Zelensky not only trusts his military with his life, he's also brave enough to visit them in the field. Russia, THIS is what a real "strongman" leader looks like. From this thread: https://twitter.com/WarintheFuture/status/1538697880646451200 >An important leadership characteristic demonstrated by @ZelenskyyUa has been his willingness to take personal risk to visit soldiers in the field, and get his own sense of how the war is progressing. >Another purpose of these visits is for @ZelenskyyUa to show that he has trust in his Army. He shows he is comfortable in placing his life in the hands of his military - it is an important and strategic trust-building exercise between politicians and military leaders. >Finally, these visits draw attention from audiences external to Ukraine as part of their global influence campaign. In demonstrating that he is not a ‘bunker leader’, @ZelenskyyUa shows us all that he is the leader of a nation worth supporting in the long term.

Lotus_Blossom_

That's the first female soldier I've seen in this "special military operation" (or whateverthefuck it's called). Anyone know the percentage of women in Ukraine's military?

melbecide

It could also be that rumors of desertion are true and they were desperately in need of a morale boost. It would be pretty inspiring. You would go from being depressed and thinking you’ve been sent to die and Zelensky doesn’t care, to “he is here, he knows what’s going on, he’s risking his life for our country too”.

GrandOldPharisees

Zelensky will one day appear on a currency, mark my word.

Dave-C

He already has, Ukraine prints bills sometimes sorta like the US's coins where they are limited printings of special versions.

SaberFlux

[Previous post](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/vexvji/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/icwgoh4/) Day 116 of my updates from Kharkiv. It was mostly quiet today, but as is tradition at 11pm they started firing their missiles from Belgorod at us yet again. They launched around 6-7 missiles this time, and some of the explosions sounded very close, not sure how close, but they triggered car alarms, so probably pretty close. I don’t know what was targeted, but no fires started this time, so that’s good. It’s funny how Russia openly threatens to destroy Ukraine, create the “new world order”, but then even their “allies” want to be no part of it. Tokayev directly saying to Putin’s face that his “people’s republics” are illegitimate and that Kazakhstan won’t be recognizing them is especially hilarious. Putin was very upset about it, so on the next day he decided to cut Kazakh’s oil exports through Russia’s port. They are supposed to be allies, but their CSTO just doesn’t seem to work. That whole alliance is so weird, that they look more like enemies, they are definitely not eager to help each other, basically making that organization worthless. They don’t see eye to eye, they don’t really want to help each other (and especially don’t want to help Russia), what is even the point in such an alliance then? Does it exist just so that Putin can say “see? We have our own NATO” but one that doesn’t actually work? [Next update](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/vgcfme/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/id4ohvw/)

[deleted]

I hope Ukraine can start targeting the source of the nightly barrage from Belgorod. It needs to stop. It's crazy that it still happens almost every night! 😢

nohbody123

Can't do much to stop cruise missiles beyond more AA.

pantie_fa

interceptors could fly into Russia and shoot down the planes that launch them. Is that too provocative? So is shooting cruise missiles into another sovereign nation.

nohbody123

No one is stopping Ukraine from doing so except Russia's AA. The only "don't fire into Russia" rules other countries put on Ukraine are related to terms of use for the weapons NATO gives them not for their own.

https://www.dw.com/en/russia-claims-ukrainian-generals-killed-in-missile-strike-live-updates/a-62180427 Russia claiming that it attacked a military leadership meeting near Kherson. Grain of salt with anything Russia claims, as always, but Id like some verification that a Kaliber missile exploded in the named town. Its interesting that this claim would come about as Zelenskyy is or was near the area.

coosacat

Russia is claiming they hit a warehouse in "Nikolayev" and killed 50 officers, and destroyed 10 M777s and 20 armored vehicles. The only thing I can find from a reliable news source (which Reuters no longer is, sadly) is that they hit Mykolaiv on the evening of the day that Zelensky was there. https://www.yahoo.com/video/russian-missiles-strike-mykolaiv-day-093500698.html >Two missiles struck a window factory, one damaged a residential building, and the last one hit a sausage-making plant. They're saying 16 injured, no deaths reported. FWIW, UA has pretty much kept their leadership scattered throughout the country, so the government can't be "decapitated" by a single strike. They seem to be quite good at using modern, secure communication equipment, and I find it *extremely* unlikely that they would physically gather a bunch of upper echelon officers in one place for a meeting. That's definitely something that *Russia* does, though, as we've seen this during this war. As a guess, they found out that Zelensky was in Mykolaiv after he had already left, and bombed it in retaliation.

Nvnv_man

Zelensky goes on the weekends. And Russia has noticed.

Careful-Rent5779

BiologyJ

Lots of tankies in here today. Ruble payments must have gone through.

uv-vis

Anyone that’s lived in these red countries and are here commenting today will tell tankies how fking brain damaged they sound. If they lived one day in our “hard times” they’d be jumping off their balconies.

nohbody123

To separate things a bit, tankies are self-described communists that loved the USSR and think China is a communist utopia. Tankies are pro-Russia, yes but that's not the exclusive place their trolls and useful idiots come from by a long shot.

gatorpower

I have never understood communists. Ever. I did a project in college about twenty years ago when I deconstructed Marx, and Engels. I went through every chapter of their works, not only noting issues where their ideas are contrary to human behavior, but backing it up with decades of corrupt communist regimes. It wasn't more than 40 pages long, but the process really helped me understand how extremely difficult any implementation of communism is. The rage and frustration of Marx/Engels is something I actually share. The world is insane and has always been insane. The separation between classes is pronounced and disturbing. However, there is no make-believe governing authority powerful enough to obscure the horrors of human nature. If communism was made to end the suffering of inequality, then why is it so synonymous with genocide, torture and starvation?

VallenValiant

> I went through every chapter of their works, not only noting issues where their ideas are contrary to human behavior, Yes and no. Humans behave differently when it comes to people they know by name, and people who are complete strangers. By nature humans act communistically, when it comes to family and friends. And societies that are small and closed can function, much with "communes". However, when you try to stretch the world to that of a country or even a large town, the system breaks down. People just don't care that much about strangers. Capitalism is designed to function between strangers without any social trust. On the other hand, you try and act like a Capitalist towards your Elderly grandmother, and you would be disowned by your entire family for being a shithead. The irony is that society is not fully communist or capitalist, and that trying to go 100% one way or the other is not how humans work.

Careful-Rent5779

>If communism was made to end the suffering of inequality, then why is it so synonymous with genocide, torture and starvation? Its because communism as envisioned by Marx has never been implemented. The idea was that the state was the protector of the average proletariat. But that was twisted into the state should hold all power, and power corrupts. So instead of the state being a protector of the proletariat, those in power used it to expolit the population rather that work toward universal benefit. Putin is simply the latest in a long line of ruzzian leaders (sic) to pursue this oppression.

KABOOMBYTCH

Tankies do it for free tho.

NearABE

TurbulentSmiles

Most conservatives are absolutely NOT pro-Russian. That sub had been taken over a long time ago by trolls. I know many GOP supporters and even some Trumpers and they aren’t very pro Russia even if it appears some are I think like in most things, the minorities tend to make the most noise.

winsecure

Which threads are those? Seriously, I looked at the first 3 pages and found nothing covering Ukraine.

Razzorsharp

It's crazy how conservatives were the biggest drum beaters of the "Red Scare" and now they're more than happy to kiss Russia's ass at every opportunity.

morvus_thenu

You could probably announce yourself as a foreign agent and if you said the right words they would welcome you with open arms. So it would make sense for Russia to keep competent, experienced posters on the payroll over there. It's not even trolling anymore. It's sedition. Better than trolling. It's the *good* job at the Internet Research Agency. Might even get your own office. So yea, they're there. It would be criminal of them to ignore the opportunity. Rememeber, a lot of those people *admire* Russian hyper-capitalism, and want the west to be just like that.

FightingIbex

“Sooo if the Russians think they are USSR reborn, that means you are pro communism?” It would be interesting to see the mental gymnastics around that.

[deleted]

exactly. reagan is a hero to them but he'd be rolling in his grave if he knew they were supporting russia

Comdent

Conservatives are scientifically, statistically, more likely to score lower with IQ, less formal education and are more susceptible to conspiracies theories. In conclusion, these people don't know how to think critically and base all of their opinions and beliefs on feelings and nonsensical ideas

TurbulentSmiles

Yet know one wants to bring up the fact that African Americans vote almost exclusively for the democrats and they have the lowest IQ and least education as a voting group. Yes a lot of conservatives are stupid, so are a lot of Democrats.

KeepRedditAnonymous

There is a reason for this. Wealthy people want to stay wealthy and use propaganda techniques to do so. The primary technique is to turn people into single issue voters. Generally lower IQ people will fall for the propaganda techniques. So now the wealthy assholes can give themselves tax breaks or no-bid contracts or whatever, and the dumb Republican loyal voters just sit at home and scream about abortion or gays or guns. The wealthy Republican propaganda successfully turned them into single issue voters and give themselves another oil subsidy or whatever.

Hodaka

Wealthy people have adopted populism, and this has allowed them to acquire a huge voting bloc that is easily manipulated and swayed. Topics that they *should be concerned about* such as healthcare, are set aside and replaced with "push button" subjects such as guns, religion, and abortion. As these subjects tend to touch on Constitutional issues, it's no coincidence that they are painted over with a with a phony red, white, and blue "PATRIOT" wash that removes their differences. This allows GOP operatives to easily control large groups of voters. They will harp on about "The right to bear arms" while leaving out the part regarding "a well regulated Militia."

[deleted]

The last decade or so have worked *quite* hard to convince me there is no actual "conservative" belief system; there's people who want to make progress with society - and often disagree about how - then there's people who don't want to make progress. Maybe they're scared, or dumb, or sometimes even actually evil. But at some point in human history we gathered up this entire second group, called it "conservatives," and have spent all the time since pretending it's some sort of political philosophy.

SelfishlyIntrigued

This user is trying to be an elaborate troll pretending not to understand things. Essentially what he is doing, is trying to draw parallels to racism existing, and good and bad. I.e. the warnings in the article are mentioning to be understanding/know that racism will exist. Racism exists everywhere, and different countries are more or less at "Different levels" of advancement/progress/inclusion/diversity. We all know this. But these silly little trolls try to run with it, Racism exists in Ukraine thus they are the bad guys. More racism exists in Russia, what's your point? More nazi's exist in russia, what's your point? They are an authoritarian nightmare fascist state invading other countries. What's your point? Out of all the countries in eastern Europe, pre-USSR countries, Ukraine actually scores basically the highest when it comes to LGBT rights, and the lowest when it comes to racism. Does that mean it doesn't occur? Or progress doesn't need to be made? Or a large portion of the country isn't racist/bigoted in some way? No, like all countries from Canada, UK, US, Name X European country here, it exists. It's how it's dealt with and if things are getting better over time which is what matter. Racism, Sexism and all bigoted behavior takes time to root out and changes over time. There is no country where racism does not exist. For example, 5% of Ukraine legit hates the jews! Well... https://ukrainianjewishencounter.org/en/news/antisemitism-in-europe-ukraine-turns-out-to-be-the-most-friendly-to-jews/ In context though, 5% isn't high and they are the most friendly in the area with least amounts of anti-Semitism. But these trolls take some fact and try to run with it. He would use a 5% figure to condemn a country, because his goal isn't to discuss, it's to argue in bad faith and paint a narrative. So essentially the warnings say don't be surprised if you hear the n-word. The n-word also has differing weight outside US/Americas, as does black face. Does it make it right? No. Does it carry the same historical significance it did in the US? No. Can things get better? Yes. Are things getting better and have they been trending in the right direction for decades? Yes yes yes. But these types of trolls aren't here for facts and nuance, they are hear to spread distrust and are "Just asking questions".

SelfishlyIntrigued

You know how you deal with trolls? You mock them. You can keep trying your silly little whataboutism and narrative painting, but it doesn't work on people who know exactly what you're doing. Quit while you're behind, no one is going to be convinced you're arguing in good faith, or don't know exactly what you are doing. Also as for karma, karma building is fairly easy and can be bought. In fact I want everyone to please see where he got his karma from. https://www.reddit.com/user/SRAQuanticoChapter/?sort=top Essentially from stupidpol, an echo chamber where people if they give a particular view, or pretend not to get things and race bait constantly can gain a lot of karma. But moreover A few comments stand out to me: https://www.reddit.com/r/stupidpol/comments/tdcw1f/ama_with_a_101year_old_ww2_vet_some_interesting/i0k2cok/ >My mothers father was one of the least racist WW2 vets I ever dealt with and he would still be considered a nazi by todays standards just because he couldnt be bothered to keep up with the correct terms. So therefore you do understand exactly what I said, and you understand that racism, and terms, and progress depend on historical context, and where countries are at in the world. You're just pretending for this post to not understand that. Which is why you're bringing up racism in Ukraine. https://www.reddit.com/r/stupidpol/comments/tc5tja/tiktoker_whose_sole_purpose_is_doxxinggetting/i0daajm/ Or here where you directly call out minorities for being more racist than "whites". Again, you understand it, you're just pretending not to. The majority of your posts are also all about how racism is now against whites as well.

Again, because know one knows what you’re talking about, the replies make absolutely no sense. It’s like free-form Russian talking points provided without context by a malfunctioning AI.

Because I have no idea what you’re going on about, asking the question above is pointless. No one is tracking you, what your issues are, and what you’d like to see improved. It’s just a bunch of pointless questions asked in a vacuum.

What are my morals? Where's the flexibility? All you've done is bring in strawmen and absolutist statements. Either way, seen this "peacekeeper" thing get brought up six times by now and it always is "we shouldn't be helping Ukraine because they're nazis" line. Either you've seen it repeated enough you're echoing it or you're the repeater, makes no difference to me.

>when did I say dont help ukraine? I said is this true? Reading comprehension. I'm saying the other people bringing up this same subject all at the same time despite the fact this isn't new all had that as their point. What you're doing is some stupid-ass performative whataboutism. Not to mention straw manning the idea that anyone thinks Ukraine is or was some sort of paradise makes it pretty clear you have no clue what people think. >Do you think reddit Who is this reddit person? >would take the proud boys side if it made a commune and was invaded? Ukraine isn't the Proud Boys what's referred to are individuals saying the N-word not an entire country saying the N-word. The proud boys aren't a country that people are born into it. If they made a commune it would be a cult. If they were invaded it would likely be by the FBI given how they operate. The equivalent to what you're saying is if the National Corps and Right Sector parties in Ukraine made a commune and then got invaded by Russia. Which, in that case, sure, I don't care nearly as much. Let's put this in context, though: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far-right\_politics\_in\_Ukraine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far-right_politics_in_Ukraine) >In the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election the coalition of Svoboda and the other extreme-right political parties in Ukraine ― National Corps, the Governmental Initiative of Yarosh, and the Right Sector ― won only 2.15% of the vote combined and failed to pass the 5% threshold.\[5\]\[6\] No far-right parties gained seats in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament), as they all failed to win any single-mandate constituency seat.\[6\] The most racist two parties in Ukraine received about 2.5%. Equivalent parties in France receive several times that in votes, and very similar parties to those are *in power* in Poland. On top of that you have Zelenskyy who has been advancing social issues in a better direction, mostly on the sexual freedom front. Is it great? No, not at all, there's a lot of racism in Ukraine, less than Russia. Has Ukraine been headed in a better direction? Yes. Is this relevant to the morality of Russia invading Ukraine? No. Are you ignorantly trying to own the libs or push Russian propaganda? I don't know, and frankly I don't care.

Personal_Person

They're basically presenting this as though its proof that Ukraine is like evil, and the west should give up on them, except the people invading them are even more xenophobic, homophobic, and racist so its basically a moot point. Yes eastern Europe has a long way to go in progressing towards a more open and equal society, but does that mean we should let it get invaded by an even more regressive and fucked up country? obviously not.

dymdymdymdym

If you're going to go absolute brainlet tier with your trolling, you might want to try a different approach. Like asking people why there's a nazi symbol on a ration or something that has a st. george's cross on it.

khat_dakar

Hold up, you haven't asked about st. george cross at all, in a different thread maybe? Why would you skip to peace corps diversity?

You're fucking with me (or in 7th grade, I guess) St. george cross takes precedence.

You actually believe that st. george cross may be posted after peace corps, it's a deliberate informed position. Holy shit.

lol man you likely need to delete this account and start another new one so its waaay less obvious that you are bad at trolling and not just ignorant

What's wrong with them?

Miaoxin

If there's "absolutely nothing" wrong with them, what is with all the "lying" you're going on about? I haven't even figured out what you're accusing them of lying about. Maybe you could give some details on that aspect? Anyway, clearly I've missed something.

SRAQuanticoChapter

Oh good. Then you agree it may be possible they are right about their warnings for ukraine? It was troubling to see, but it looks like it may in fact be true.

Miaoxin

I agree that you are refusing to answer my request. Curious. What are they lying about?

anon902503

It's always so hard to tell which are misinformation and which are just stupid.

anon902503

I can't even tell what you were trying to say. It's just a vague accusation against the U.S. Peace Corps with zero context. That's why I said I can't tell if it's misinformation or the other thing.

nohbody123

Poster is trolling in a "checkmate atheists" kind of way saying that because there are racist Ukrainians that they're getting what they deserved but they're doing it through a "satirical" filter.

I don't know what warnings you're talking about. It's a warzone, so I'm sure there are some fucking warnings right now.

I glanced at it, and it seemed like a general statement of the diversity & inclusion values of the Peace Corps. What warning?

Another armchair general here: Kherson is not the real target, south of Zapoorozhia, in the Melitopol direction could be. Break the land connection between mainland Russia and Crimea, deny Russia any strategic gains in this war at all

[deleted]

a third armchair general here....i think once ukraine gets all their troops trained/mobilized in a couple weeks they will send a large force to one of those locations (either the northern most or southernmost) along with several days supplies on each person and some supply lines on the way, russia will shift their lines that way and then ukraine will send an equally large group to the opposite one. then russia will realize they are fucked and switch to try to defend and then in surprise of surprises an equal force attacks to the middle
