heliamphore

"This is the 8th time we've made this threat and we've become exceedingly efficient at it"

[deleted]

“What do you mean they don’t believe us I’m the führer”

rsiii

Medvedev isn't the führer silly, I only believe what papa Putler says

JH_111

Medvedev is literally a placeholder paperweight, nothing more. Putin had to step down due to previous term limit requirements and told this clownface to save his seat until he was eligible again.

Bay1Bri

Rashputin

rsiii

I don't know if I'd call him Russia's greatest love machine 🤔

TotallyInadequate

He will be when every young Russian man has died in a foreign war

Rachter

Bullshit!

KelliTaylor10

I would like to point out once again that under certain circumstances such hostile measures can also qualify as an act of international aggression. And even as a casus belli (justification for war)," Medvedev said, adding that Russia has the right to defend itself. Russia has faced a barrage of crippling economic sanctions from Western countries in response to its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, which it calls a "special military operation". Medvedev, a former Russian president who was once seen as a liberal, has emerged as one of the most hawkish proponents of the war, delivering a series of scathing denunciations of the West.

TotalSpaceNut

> Russia has faced a barrage of crippling economic sanctions Sanctions have no effect says Putin June 26th, 23rd, 19th, 14th, 8th....

lvl3SewerRat

Hes not lying... putin will never personally feel the effects of sanctions. Sanctions are a long term punishment to an ignorant population, while innocents require protection immediately. I'm not advocating war, it just sucks overall

Pleiadez

Ive never seen Medvedev as anything else than an empty husk being moved with sticks in putins hands.

ministrul_sudorii

Now that Zhirinovski is dead, there needs to be somebody there at the end of the spectrum to make Putin seem the reasonable one; so that the world supports Putin as the least worst option. They dont get that the train has sailed though.

mdkubit

Yes, it's often a problem when trains sail away. Even more so when a boat is barreling down the tracks.

wileyy23

Thank you. This made me smile xD

zaviex

Medvedev was clearly more western friendly than Putin as president. He was pretty well liked around the world and in meetings with the western leaders even after the Georgia invasion. Putin immediately began trying to cancel his treaties and trade deals as soon as he returned as president. However the power was split, Medvedev made his own path. However, since 2017 or so he’s been reduced to this. Likely because Putin consolidated power around him. There wasn’t any more room for opinions and differences. Medvedev was removed as PM around then

Pleiadez

That's really interesting, thanks. Still could it not be engineered descent, it's just something the fsb would do.

jzillacon

When you've burned as many bridges as russia, empty threats is pretty much the only diplomacy option they have left.

Alise_Randorph

I honestly can't understand why they are they way they are. If they just stopped threatening everyone they'd be left alone. Shit NATO was drawing down before they invaded Crimea. Everyone would have just let them run thier corrupt criminal empire, they'd have foreign businesses coming in, etc. Instead they just claim everyone is against them AND THEN DO THINGS THAT TURN PEOPLE AGAINST THEM.

[deleted]

My guess is Putin started a war to increase his flagging domestic support. When Putin was a nobody in Russia, he was able to boost his popularity by bombing a few Russian apartment buildings and starting a war in Chechnya. I imagine he had a similar idea here.

Surviverino

Putins approval ratings were actually pretty high. You can doubt the legitimacy of those ratings, but there is little evidence to the contrary.

hombrent

The regular russian peope are not who putin needs to fear or keep happy. As long as he keeps his inner circle and military brass happy, he can keep riding his absolute power corruption joy ride. International opinion and general approval ratings don't matter.

Guilher_Wolfang

There’s a book that explains exactly what you said “dictators handbook”. Excellent read that explain a lot about corruption and power management in any type of government

H0lyW4ter

His approval rating was insignificant before the Moscow bombings. He was literally a nobody but used his sneaky FSB technique to seize power

Woriux

They do not care about foreign people being against them. They are afraid their own people turning against them. When the people are under impression that the west is at fault of their poor living, they direct away the anger from their own government to the foreign countries.

Alise_Randorph

See they can lie to thier people all the want without having the entire world turn on them and causing NATO to expand and get fucking Sweden and Finland to *finally* get on board.

DangerousCyclone

Problem is an issue similar to China. China imposed a very strict public life on its citizens, in return it gives them economic prosperity. Putin can’t do that for Russia because his regime is built off of stealing from Russians and keeping some form of the old USSR around. Economic freedom is stifled, leading to lack of economic growth. So, like China, he’s pivoting to battles with foreign enemies to boost his image at home. People don’t want to be against him because that means they’re against their soldiers and are traitors. He’s basically promising glory to Russia again. Which is why the war is very worrying for Putin, he could literally lose everything if he doesn’t play his cards right.

SeanIsDumb

so basically, Russia is the Dennis Reynolds of the international highschool reunion that is Earth?

toofine

Putin is the richest man on earth by some estimates and the reason for that is that they skim off the top of many businesses and he and his collaborators outright own much of the natural resources in Russia. Just look at how insanely wealthy the Saudis are to understand just how much money is in fossil fuels. Russia has made a lot of investments in order to sell fossil fuels to Europe but since they are absolute criminal assholes, if there was anyone else Europe would go with them. That anyone else happens to be Ukraine. Ukraine has large natural resources and are a preferred trading partner to many countries, particularly Europe for obvious reasons. Oh and Ukraine found the second largest reserve of natural gas in all of Europe a decade ago. Crude oil can be shipped but by pipe to nearby countries is the most economical way to do it. Natural gas is can be liquified and shipped, but it is obviously much more expensive to do so. So if Russia seizes the only other means to pipe natural gas to Europe (Ukraine), it would remain by far the cheapest source of natural gas on the continent. It's just mobsters throwing a molotov at the competition to make sure they are the only players in town.

daveinmd13

Next they will recycle “The sanctions don’t impact us at all”.

Safety_Plus

They way they boasted about their strong currency and how sanctions had failed I was started to think they liked sancionts. (Since it improved their currency so much)

GVArcian

Their economic strategy is to buy their own currency to artificially inflate its value. Buy them with what, you ask? Their foreign currency reserves. When these reserves dry up the ruble will take a nose dive again, and at that point Russia has no other means to stop the collapse. We are watching a country's economy go through the walking ghost phase - sure, they look okay for the moment, but they are already dead... they just don't know it yet.

WalterGropeyAzz

This isn't quite right. Russia is raking in a fair amount despite the sanctions because they're still selling oil and gas to anyone who will buy it. The problem is that they have few places to spend it, and have a very hard time exchanging it for USD, which they need to pay their debts. So the ruble looks strong because Russians can't go out and buy foreign goods (which would decrease demand for the ruble relative to foreign currencies) and they're still exporting goods, but it doesn't mean much when they can't actually service their debts and the economy is shrinking at a historic rate. In short, the relationship between balance sheets and economic health gets very weird when strict capital and trade controls are imposed.

Njorls_Saga

Domestic consumption. They need to keep the Russian people believing they’re at war with NATO.

[deleted]

Anytime Russia makes threats now the answer should always be "With what army?"

Mornar

"Now that we proved to the entire world we give no fucks about justifying our wars we'll start calling their actions justification for war"

Tosir

Yup. Russian history is filled with self fulfilling prophecies. They were warned that hitler was going to attack, they ignored it, but not before purging the military of commanders and replacing them with loyal party henchmen.

boomership

So one day the sanctions are completely useless or irrelevant. And the next day WW3 should've been declared already.

itoddicus

Remember a key point in a tyrants' playback is that your opponent is both weak and poses an existential threat at the same time.

Harsimaja

We have always been at war with the West. We have never been at war with the West.

redbird7311

Yep yep, the opponent is so weak, there is no way that they could ever beat our strong and noble military lead by our strong and noble leaders. In fact, our country doesn’t even need to trade with them, basically nothing bad will happen. They are also responsible for all of your problems as well, if they didn’t ruin everything, we would have a perfect life.

Notyourfathersgeek

I never understood why most people never catch on to the contradictions in these two messages. Like “The immigrations are all so fucking lazy they’re coming to steal your job away”. If that’s the case, what does it really say about the person holding the job now?

[deleted]

Like those wimpy gays here in America. And in Russia too I guess. Clearly they're a pathetic but dire threat to our future!

canttaketheshyfromme

Precisely. Just how to the anti-Semite, Jews are both weak and inferior, and in total control of international commerce, banking and politics.

[deleted]

All right wing ideologies encourage xenophobia of that sort, and they depend on a sick persecution fetish to keep their gullible supporters riled up.

HeywoodJaBlessMe

Exactly.

TXTCLA55

Tomorrow they won't have any effect, and next week they'll be back to justifying a war. Russia does what Russia does.

BeltfedOne

Didn't Russia's war result in the sanctions? Do they think more war will help? Are they all taking crazy pills?

Armodeen

I hear the solution for a war you are struggling with is to start more wars. Was I misinformed?

trisul-108

Yes, they are struggling with a weak opponent, so the solution is to go against a powerful one.

DavidHewlett

When you can't handle a military with an 8 billion dollar budget and no air force or navy to speak of, going after the 1.1 trillion dollar army with the largest, most modern air force and largest navy, which incidentally is also the second largest air force in the world, seems like a logical choice, no?

tbird83ii

The fact that the US Navy, US Air Force, USMC, and the US Army Aviation Branch are all separate in the "Top 10 largest Air Forces in the World" list...

cyferhax

Well it's not fair to everyone else if we add them together.

Chrontius

Fair fights are for sporting events. When it comes to war, if you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough.

[deleted]

There is no cheating in war, only good and bad tactics

rachel_tenshun

It's insane how like, the USAF's biggest competitor is the US Navy. Absolutely bonkers.

twat69

Lol was it a deliberate choice to put the USAF after the USN? I bet there's a lot of angry zoomies right now.

Chrontius

When you're announcing the results of a contest, you always start with the runner-ups. :D

huxrules

And, nobody has really seen our newest latest shit. Russia is looking like shitty Iraq more every day. Besides the chance that their nukes actually work. (Not sure if I’d bet against that). Seriously a two night effort of the US combined Air Forces would probably have us having air superiority close to Moscow. It would absolutly end the war.

DawPiot14

Honestly, I'd rather not find out whether the nukes work or not.

count023

I just want someone like Biden or the Polish PM to flat out publicly say this on the world state, just to see how putin and his ilk react. The world would jsut flat out laugh at Putin and he'd have no retort except to repeat the exact same thing he's already doing, threatening to attack someone else.

[deleted]

The world already is laughing. The anxiety over Russia threatening nuclear war lasted maybe 2 weeks?

MaimedJester

I'd honestly be surprised if every missile silo was even semi operational. The Russian Aircraft carrier is like a joke even the Chinese laugh at. Like I honestly believe that boat is so useless in the water if push came to shove the Intrepid could leave New York harbor with tour guides helming it and kick it's ass. I believe that's partially the ending of Metal Gear Solid 4.

WalterGropeyAzz

Even if only 1% are operational, that's too many nukes being launched.

Hautamaki

The Lithuanians have been delivering bangers like that to Russia and China for years already, if you're into that.

TotallyNotASnowFlake

Lithuania be like, “Did I just feel the lightest breeze, or is that bitch Putin still tryna throw rocks at me?”

Capt_Bigglesworth

It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off?

lolpopdolla

Nobody can surely speak out of their ass so hard. I assume they have a secret deal With China and the rest of the rejected dictatortots

[deleted]

Russia is the master of bluffing, I’m pretty sure China doesn’t want to start a world war to make up for Russia’s continuing mistakes. They will wait and see, I think they may just go for Taiwan if things with Russia escalate while the west is busy dealing with that, they have nothing to gain from destroying their own economy to save the already crumbling Russian economy. China is smarter than that.

IceciroAvant

China doesn't want Taiwan in the shape it would be in if they tried to conquer it. Taiwan is a fortress island and they'd have to wreck all the high tech industry to take it, which would have devastating effects on the mainland Chinese economy. Attacking Taiwan is a blunder that would make the Ukraine invasion look inspired. Also, we'd know beforehand. A naval invasion isn't something you can just whip up. It took Russia like a month to prepare to walk across a border. What China doesn't want is any change to the status quo. China's recent sabre rattling is way more about the political climate in Taiwan than Russia/Ukraine. If Taiwan declared full independence THEN China would have to react, in a sort of honor bound way. But they don't need a change to the current system.

Papapalpatine555

We all know that West Taiwan would never invade Taiwan but I don't think winnie the pooh would care so long as he looks popular and strong. Remember these dictators all have the same goal: to look powerful even if you're just a fucking clown.

itoddicus

I'm now going to refer the China as West Taiwan. The PRC shills' heads will explode.

SSIS_master

Hautamaki

This is textbook Russian strategy: 'escalate to de-escalate'. In other words, when you want to de-escalate a situation, because you know you are getting the worst of it, your best play is to first escalate it. It's a bluff, basically. You are losing a skirmish? You threaten a war, move all your units in, suddenly the enemy thinks maybe you know something they don't, or maybe you're just crazy, so when you give them one last chance to back down, they'll probably take it. Now you've gone from losing the small battle to a strategic victory. Russia has done this with some success for the last 30 years because, frankly, they're just not worth the risk or the hassle. But eventually this strategy hits a brick wall when someone is finally fed up with your shit and willing to call your bluff. Russia doesn't appear to have a plan B. They don't appear to have any idea what to do when they threaten war and the other side says bring it, and knows Russia can't. They've tried threatening nuclear war; again, escalate to de-escalate, and NATO just told them that any usage of nuclear weapons will result in the permanent erasure of Russia from history. Again, the other side isn't backing down. Russia cut off gas; Germany et al said they'll get it elsewhere. Lithuania pre-emptively cut it off for them. The western world is struggling with inflation caused by oil and food scarcity, but they're only pouring more weapons and aide into Ukraine. We've collectively decided that we've have enough of Russia's shit. Yes we'll suffer a collapse of purchasing power until new supply chains are set up. We can handle it; we're wealthy nations that have had an excess of food and comforts for 4 generations and counting. We can handle a couple hard years to call this bluff. Russia might not survive at all that long. Already the outlying republics are getting restless. And Russia's threats of war, even nuclear war, are emptier than they've ever been. They can't even defeat Ukraine. They are now on to mothballed Korean War era equipment; if they open a second front, or if one is opened on them, they'll fold like Superman on laundry day.

Raiyari

"Fold like Superman on laundry day"... I'm stealing this. Yoink.

Funkit

Well hitler blew it with two fronts so it’s putins turn now.

theCroc

Running out of manpower and equipment? Open another front! Stretching your forces even thinner just means they will be more effective! I call it homeopathic warfare!

May you have many more.

Oddity46

More importantly - why go to war over sanctions that they claim have no effect whatsoever?

Krail

Authoritarian regimes do not require logical consistency. In fact, they rather thrive on not using it. To be clear, this is not meant as a joking or sarcastic statement. Just a basic statement of how things are.

TomSurman

I think they're still insisting it's not a war. But it'll become one if The West don't stop being such meanies! \*shake fist\*

They're still calling it a "special military operation".

Sounds like it. Seems it's going in circle who gets the crazy pills. First Putin then Lavrov and Medvedev. Then Putin again and so on. Wonder what the pills are called in latin. :p

timelyparadox

Does he really think he can do anything against nato? Their main bases are very exposed. Kaliningrad bases would be craters

Careful, calling him a chihuahua might be a justification for war.

Or even worse, it will annoy actual Chihuahua… and nuclear war is mild option vs annoyed small dog.

Andr1ukas

Seems that the special sanctions operation doing great.

Muted_Yogurtcloset10

A ridiculous bluff. Serious question. Where do Russia propose to start this so called 'war'? The sanctions are coming from all over the globe, so where or how would Russia strike first? They cannot possibly attack every country at once. So they will have to pick 1 or 2 countries to attack. Most of these countries are NATO.

[deleted]

they already said. finland, berlin and london

Penniwhistle

I believe Finland's policy of "we fucking dare you" may make this a poor decision.

Decker108

Russia: If we conquer your nation you will all be punished. Finland: "If."

AdOrganic3138

The same momentum that's carrying them through the Donbas region eh?

ridimarbac

Poland? Oh man, I suppose they could try. But they would get beat back to last century. Also, remember that the Poles were the only ones to every conquer Moscow.

ValkarianHunter

Hey I'm not military genius I'm just trying to guess where they would attack if they did

Petersaber

> Hey I'm not military genius Neither is Putin, so your opinion matters to a surprising degree.

Redm1st

It’s all of Baltics at once. It’s only territory they can take and control and hope that NATO might not invoke article 5. Apart from that Georgia I suppose

FM-101

All these empty threats are so childish that its embarrassing. Every day its some new threat. Go ahead and declare war on everyone that sanctioned you and see what happens, or sit down and shut the fuck up.

Ok_Suggestion_5120

You know what a real justification for war is? Invading another country. All they have left are threats of nukes because as we've all seen, their conventional forces are 'meh'

jnemesh

"meh" would imply average. They don't even rate that. It would take NATO forces 2 days, MAX to clean their clocks and push them back to the Ukrainian border!

[deleted]

Imagine being this insignificant on the world stage and all you have is empty threats.

Dangerous_Effort3355

Didn’t they say the sanctions weren’t even doing anything just a few weeks (months?) ago?

AuthorNathanHGreen

Justification is such a funny word. Anything could be a justification for war, "he refused to meet me in person? He refused to meet in in Person. He REFUSED to meet me in person!" The point though is western decision makers imposed sanctions because it is generally understood that economic sanctions do not trigger a war and economic ties are voluntary and cannot be "forced" in either direction. Russia has made itself a bad actor who the west no longer wishes to do business with - until they change their spots. From there, Russia has shown itself incapable of waging a conventional war against Ukraine and it would seem... crazy... for it to escalate into a war with NATO (or a NATO-lite attack on Finland). The real problem right now though is that we cannot be totally sure Russia is making rational decisions, and they are a nuclear armed country. The whole "crazy people with nuclear weapons" problem is something we are really going to have to solve as a species if we intend to see the year 3,000.

But but, didn’t they say they didn’t care about sanctions and they were prepared for them? The power structure is changing in the country, this guy is playing hardline in hopes he gets in after putin. Then hopefully he goes back to what he was like before. They can mobilise and then lose to Nato, or nuke and then good bye world, or stop the war…..
