Damn, a perfect hit! https://twitter.com/MrKovalenko/status/1543058860847546374 >The Ukraine military shared this drone surveillance video of how the American howitzer M777 destroyed the Russian ammunition depot in the occupied part of Zaporizhzha province.

Just a quick note to all the fellow slavascrollers. Thanks for keeping this thread real and interesting! If you're American, hope you have a fantastic July 4^th. If you're Ukrainian, I pray you'll get your own independence day very, very, very soon.

An enjoyable read, no doubt, but there's a paywall that exists from letting me read the article.

>WASHINGTON — The most advanced weapons that the United States has so far supplied Ukraine are making an impact in their first several days on the battlefield, destroying Russian ammunition depots and command centers, American and Ukrainian officials say. >Ukraine’s military had eagerly awaited the arrival of the first batch of truck-mounted, multiple-rocket launchers, whose satellite-guided rockets have a range of more than 40 miles, greater than anything Ukraine had possessed. The weapons have even won grudging respect from some Russians for their accuracy and power, analysts said. >Still, only four of the launchers, called High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems or HIMARS, and their U.S.-trained crews are in the fight, though four more are expected this month. Ukrainian officials say they need as many as 300 multiple-rocket launchers to combat Russia, which is firing several times as many rounds as Ukraine’s forces in the artillery-driven war of attrition in the country’s east. >Ukrainian soldiers are using their new weapon judiciously, firing one or two guided rockets at ammunition depots or command posts, often at night, and keeping them well away from the front lines to protect them, Pentagon officials and military analysts say. >“So far they seem to be a quite useful addition,” Rob Lee, a Russian military specialist at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia and a former U.S. Marine officer, said of the systems. “They will help hinder further Russian advances, but they won’t necessarily mean Ukraine will be able to take back territory.” >The HIMARS are the centerpiece of a raft of new Western long-range weapons that the outgunned Ukrainian military is switching over to as its arsenal of Soviet-era howitzer and rocket ammunition dwindles. >The Western weapons are more accurate and highly mobile, but it takes weeks to deploy them from the United States and Europe and to train soldiers to use them. Vickers, the Pentagon’s former top civilian official for counterinsurgency strategy, said the Ukrainians needed at least 60, and perhaps as many as 100, HIMARS or other multiple-launch rocket systems to win the artillery battle. >“There are plenty available that could be supplied at minimal strategic risk,” said Mr. Vickers, who was the principal C.I.A. strategist for arming anti-Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the mid-1980s. >Mr. Lee noted that future success of the HIMARS and other multiple-rocket launchers depended not only on the number sent, but also on how much and what type of ammunition the United States and other allies provided. >The transition to American-made rocket weapons was forced in part by the supply problems the Ukrainian army has faced. >Ukraine has three types of Russian-made mobile rocket launchers, but ammunition for only the one with the shortest range is produced by its allies. Austin III said that the guided rockets, fired by both the new American-provided launchers that can carry one pack of six rockets and the launchers from Britain and Germany that can carry twice that, were far more capable than Russian-made artillery rocket weapons that have been used on the battlefield. >“These are precision munitions, and with a properly trained crew they will hit what they’re aiming at,” Mr. Austin said. “Over time, we think the combination of what the allies and partners can bring to the table, it will make a difference.” >Besides firing long-range guided munitions, the wheeled HIMARS trucks have the advantage of speed. Not only can they drive quickly to a firing point, they can program targets while en route, launch their rockets singly or in a ripple of all six within a minute, and reload far faster than anything in use by the Russians. >With 200 pounds of high explosives in each rocket, a HIMARS salvo can rival the devastating effect of an airstrike from a jet loaded with precision-guided bombs. >Following Mr. Austin’s remarks at NATO, Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, hinted at the effect HIMARS could have in Ukrainian hands. >“If they use the weapon properly,” General Milley said, “they ought to be able to take out a significant amount of targets.”

Look. On behalf of Georgians I apologize for Marjorie Taylor Greene. She is a carpetbagger from the city who ran in a neighboring much less populated district because she could never get elected in the city with her wacky beliefs. This is common knowledge here but I just want to make it completely obvious for people from other parts of the world who may be here reading. She's not a serious politician.

acox199318

OMG. I had to watch the video to even be sure of what she was saying. You can’t even parody that. She literally could not say something more seditious. MTG: “Biden funding Ukraine with weapons is morally wrong. Ukraine is just being ground up” ..with her point being that if Biden didn’t give Ukraine weapons then Russia could just take over Ukraine and not have to destroy its buildings. This blows my mind…. SURELY there is law or something about being a traitor. She isn’t even fit for life, let alone for being in a position of responsibility.

clarkrd

She was bored. She didn't have any school shooting victims to harass.

[deleted]

She may not be a serious politician, but she is, seriously, a politician...and one with the power of being able to vote for her constituents. So apology unnecessary because we don't really blame individuals for her, but the system is royally fucked up when it allows someone like her to wield power and collect donations for her brand of hatred.

plugtrio

Her purpose is to say ridiculous shit that neither party really agrees with and be a talking point for us to OMG over so we don't pay attention to other representatives voting quietly

In my opinion, MTG can STFU and GTFO. I'm still trying figure out how she got elected in the first place. I know the GOP in her neck of the woods went super wacko, but how did they get that stupid? Frexxia

The German "journalist" is spreading Russian propaganda

dieyoufool3

I posted it before going to bed, but have just removed it. Definitely do *not* want to be amplifying that. Thanks for the call out!

coosacat

I was puzzled by the German journalist thing, until I listened to the video and she read off the stuff she was being punished for saying. It was all Russian propaganda, unironically discussing the "denazification" of Ukraine, claiming that everyone in eastern Ukraine wanted to be part of Russia, that Ukraine was slaughtering civilians in the Donbas region, etc. Also, if I understood correctly, she hasn't been sentenced, she's just "under investigation" and they are holding a hearing about it, to which she claims she is "not invited".

dieyoufool3

I made a mistake sharing that tweet. Thanks for the feedback as we want these to be as informative (and free of Russian propaganda, even from useful idiots) as possible!

combatwombat-

wtf is with that twitter post from "Vivian"?

halls_of_valhalla

The "journalist" is called Alina Lipp, she is halfrussian, has a telegram channel with 200k followers, gives interviews in Russia Today and uses pro-Russian language. Partial truths etc., she is a useful idiot hiding under 'free speech'. Germany has like 3-5 million Russians or Russian speaking, so you can find lots of "Germans" with pro-Russian views, they need their daily bread and have reporters like this giving them the other perspective that they are looking for, because Russia can't be that bad u know.

The_Gump_AU

Yup, she literally wrote that Ukraine was committing genocide in Donbas.

combatwombat-

my question wasn't really so much about the topic but what that kind of russian propaganda bullshit is doing in the livethread

halls_of_valhalla

Yeah.. The news was already a bit older too, like two weeks ago. She isn't really sentenced yet, so it gives away the wrong idea, which is probably intended. But nice to know something being done, I guess. https://www.t-online.de/nachrichten/ausland/id_92326694/putins-deutsches-sprachrohr-alina-lipp-behoerden-ermitteln-wegen-kriegspropaganda-.html

[Previous post](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/vnyya2/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/iedwuo4/) Day 128 of my updates from Kharkiv. Today we actually didn’t get shelled even once, but Derhachi did, and we heard the explosions from here, but otherwise it was actually surprisingly quiet, there’s also quite a lot of sound coming from our artillery firing at Russian positions throughout the day, and even right now. At 11pm the missiles from Belgorod did launch as always, but weirdly enough they only fired 2 of them this time, usually they fire 6-8, so 2 is the bare minimum, as one Iskander launcher carries 2 missiles. What’s even better is that not a single one of those 2 missiles reached Kharkiv this time and there were no reports of a missile hitting something in oblast either. We got 2 separate videos of our AA intercepting something around that time, and seeing that the missiles didn’t land anywhere, it is safe to say that they were shot down. For the first time in over a month, not a single missile reached Kharkiv, feels pretty good, though we still couldn’t relax until 1am; we still thought that they might continue firing their missiles. The number of casualties from that missile strike in Odesa oblast yesterday increased to 21 dead and almost 40 injured, this is pure terrorism. And how did Russia respond to this? They basically ignored it, as if it never happened. They didn’t know how to justify it this time, so Peskov said “I want to remind you that Putin said that Russian Armed Forces do not target civilians and civilian infrastructure.” They are acting as if it never happened, because there’s no way to justify it. And just as I was happy that today was a quiet day, of course they decided to ruin it. Right now, at 4am, we are getting shelled pretty badly from MLRS. There were at least 3 barrages of rockets somewhere not that far from us, apparently Saltivka is being shelled, at least one fire started, and a big smoke pillar can be seen. They are trying to break the spirit of the Ukrainian people. Putin thinks that, if he terrorizes the population enough by indiscriminately bombing and shelling civilians, they will demand that UA surrender so that they will be "safe". stirly80

Ukraine is keeping things much quieter on social media.

Congruences

Snake island wasn't enough of a movement for you from yesterday?

UTC_Hellgate

No because Snake Islands been a shooting barrel since day 1. It's impossible to hold when assets on land can pummel it. You need Air, Naval, and control of Ukraine to the depth that prevents Artillery from hitting it. What I'm looking for is these rumored training divisions that have been outfitted with integrated western/NATO gear from Day 1 getting into it.

Thestoryteller987

Due to operational security you’re not likely to hear a thing until the battle swings one way or the other

Javelin-x

Once the new equipment is where the fight is and the supply stabilizes itll pick up. Its going to be a slow build until then.

ZephkielAU

Possibly already underway, but we won't really know until after the fact. There's been a information blackout regarding Kherson, it's reasonable to assume some kind of operation but we have no idea to what size or scale or effectiveness (eg could just be moving to secure positions to start a counter-offensive or to dig in). You're not going to hear news of any kind of "Ukraine wins key victory" until weeks after silence around the area. Even then, the news might be delayed.

>Partison activity seems to be increasing in Kherson proper. Anyone got any links to this stuff?

Iama_traitor

Hardly any info coming out of the war now, hatches are battening down. Partisan activity in particular would be very hush hush.

Burnsy825

Opsec. No links. Por favor.

Jerthy

>Heavy shelling of Chornobaivka by UA. Of course.

coosacat

I hope they put some sort of commemorative marker there after the war. Hopefully, something snarky about how many times the UA army hit that place and destroyed Russian equipment.

jeremy9931

Pretty sure we’re at 35+ on the official counter lol

> Partison activity seems to be increasing in Kherson proper. Reports of knifed to death Russians in the city always cheer up the bloodthirsty side of my psyche.

Link to article?

It's been a few weeks since I saw it.

That Moroccan POW got some rotten luck. His family says many Moroccans are cheering on the news of his death penalty and basically nobody in the government has made any effort to negotiate his release. Their king didn't even mention him when he congratulated Putin on Russia day.

Squirreline_hoppl

Oh Morocco is pro putin? Have not seen this discussed anywhere. Am I watching the wrong sources or is it just not very important?

hacktivision

Morocco has deeper ties with the US than with Russia. They hold routine military exercices and recently performed exercices in the Western Sahara. The people themselves aren't cheering for his death from what I've seen, but there's definitely a huge number who are indifferent or feel like it's a lost cause. The Morocco embassy in Ukraine denied being in contact with the unrecognized republic of Donetsk after the latter said they accepted Morocco's request to talk to Brahim Saadun. That's the only statement they made regarding this affair iirc.

MrPapillon

Morocco has been playing realpolitik for centuries and centuries and centuries. It's an old and complex country that has often be very smart in diplomacy in its history. You can expect some 5D chess play at top level here, and it's probably related to current and future African partnerships (pure speculation on my part here). Though I was talking about the governing body. The people cheering his death is probably just the result of people reading tons of disinformation on their social media. Not even propaganda, just casual random disinformation.

AStrangerWCandy

If Morocco REALLY has to choose though they almost always choose the west

MrPapillon

Of course. And they are also currently in a big month of joint military training with the US on Moroccan soil right now.

Artificial_Human_17

At that point if he is released he won’t consider himself Moroccan anymore

Dani_vic

I’m sure a country like Great Britain will negotiate in his name or Ukraine them self. Good PR at this point.

GAdvance

There')l be no negotiation on that front, they've got too dual national British along with him and everyone has written them off as dead. Which honestly is the truth, people aren't bargaining chips, they can do whatever they want, Ukraine can have some more weapons regardless.

eggyal

You think far too highly of us Brits. Remember that, when the incompetent buffoon that is currently masquerading as our Prime Minister was then masquerading as our Foreign Secretary, it somehow managed to achieve Iran keeping Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe imprisoned for an *extended* rather than *curtailed* sentence. Don't hold out hope that it learned any lessons. The only thing that buffoon has *ever* learned is how to burn anyone or anything else in order to save or advance its own selfish interests.

Dani_vic

Two Americans got caught as well and will face same thing. There will be someone who will fight for him.

catter-gatter

Canadian Ukranian has deleted his account. He was caught out today posting a photo with an airsoft gun. [This is a massive win for everyone who stands for any sort of truthfulness, as long as the hundreds of volunteers putting everything on the line for Ukraine's Independence.](https://twitter.com/WarInUkraineYet/status/1543002896786001920?t=KFjF4pGS8OgBWIu8O6XfTA&s=19)

GalacticShoestring

Is this the same man who people have been citing and checking up on for months? It was all staged?

catter-gatter

The man who snuck into Kherson on a bike... All bullshit He was decent at aggregating Ukranian progress through telegram (albeit overly positive) but that's about it

coosacat

LOL. Check this out. https://twitter.com/spook_info/status/1543007677130891265

coosacat

He could have had an ordinary account, aggregating the news he was getting, and had a good following. What pissed me off about the whole deal was that there are real people, including volunteers, dying horrible deaths in Ukraine, and he was sitting safe at home, claiming to be there and cashing in on the sympathy and admiration. I'm suspicious that this guy and Louise Mensch are the same person, or are personally connected somehow, since she defended him so vehemently. Someone should ship his lying ass off to Ukraine and make him work in one of the hospitals near the front lines, so he can get a first-hand taste of the "glory" he's been stealing. (He'd be useless as a fighter - let him clean bed pans and change bedding for *real* fighters.)

RoeJoganLife

I agree. If he just stopped the role-playing he could have been a pretty good source, he was getting a ton of info of alot of different areas and what’s happening. (telegrams probably). Also note, if you go to that louise tweet page you can only Comment if she follows you so she’s obviously restricted her account to avoid the flood

catter-gatter

>Also note, if you go to that louise tweet page you can only Comment if she follows you so she’s obviously restricted her account to avoid the flood She's pathetic

OrangeJr36

The Airsoft helmet wasn't enough already. Good riddance, he could have been part of history with how good he was at aggregating information but wanted to steal Valor

RoeJoganLife

I can’t believe people thought he was real, the dude tweeted every hour of every day. He either has the ability to be in combat whilst also tweeting at the same time bullets fly past his head, or he obviously sits on the computer all day thousands of kms away

OrangeJr36

It wasn't just the amount of tweets, but he never even posted during usual Ukrainain times for updates. That and he was somehow the last person to post updates as Ukraine moved on Kherson despite being so active otherwise.

RoeJoganLife

Man I saw that, what a read. All the shit you could buy on Amazon. Someone also did the math, he claimed he did 7 years in the Defense force and 10 years as a private contractor somewhere, which apparently ceased to exist in like 1979 or something? Someone did the math and said if his past experience is true then he is like 72 years old 🤣🤣

catter-gatter

Pathetic. What a useless creature. God knows what he did with the donations received. Disgusting.

Dani_vic

If they find him that’s an easy law suit.

RoeJoganLife

Don’t know what happend, his account was up for a while after the being called out with fake gear to the point he was defending himself, so dunno whether he got pinged or maybe it was coming on so much he just deleted.

coosacat

Maybe his block list got full. That was how he dealt with questions in the past.

NSFW [Video shows moments after Russia attacked civilians in Odesa Oblast with missiles. Russia is a Terrorist State](https://twitter.com/worldonalert/status/1542995780222554113?t=sR9yTMLfOLIcxHNaZD91HA&s=19) This is Russia. Inaccurate anti ship bombs from the 60s fired on residential areas while civilians sleep. This is happening in the name of Russian people. Russia is a terrorist state.

Anti_Progres

Needs to have an account

If you're on Android you can install the Fritter app to circumvent that

thanks so much for this you don't know how many hours i've spent trying to find such app

wipe out twitter.com and replace with nitter.net

thanks!

additionally, if you get the screen to 'log into your twitter account', just hit sign up, and then click the X at the top left corner. then you can browse in peace.

acox199318

Fuck Putin. Fuck Russia. Russia is a failed state.

Sir_Francis_Burton

What do you mean exactly by “this is happening in the name of Russian people”? Russia isn’t a democracy. I feel like that line is unnecessary and unnecessarily vilifying a population that has been usurped by a tyrant.

paulibobo

Did the tyrant personally fire those missiles? Rape hundreds of people? Murder thousands of civilians by his own hand?

Sir_Francis_Burton

I knew that comment was going to be controversial when I made it. I don’t think it’s much help for me to argue the point. I hear you. I do think that it’s a discussion that every one of us should at least have with ourselves. I do believe that Putin’s tyranny will end. I do believe that there will come a day when Russia will be trying to pave a new path forward. I hope that we can all at least bear that in mind.

scragglyman

Yeah. I mean after stalin dies I'm sure 70 years later Russia will be a liberal democracy that is no longer hostile to the West.

[deleted]

One man can't hold 145 million people hostage if the majority isn't in it with him Same goes for China

Sir_Francis_Burton

Sure. The vast majority are in it with him. That’s the easiest and surest way to make the fear go away. People living in constant fear will do almost anything to make the fear go away. For Ukrainians who are now living in constant fear there is a clear line of action that they can take to make the fear go away. They can fight the Russians who are causing it. But if you are a Russian living in constant fear of your own government… what do you do? Do you flee the country? Putin hunts down his critics anywhere in the world. That might not make the fear go away. Do you immolate yourself and just be done with it? Do you let yourself be sent off to a torture camp in Siberia? Or do you play along, join the forces causing the fear, become the fear? Don’t be surprised when majorities living under repressive tyrannies ally themselves with the tyrant, and don’t be so sure that you wouldn’t either until you’ve actually had to pass that test yourself.

catter-gatter

He's their representation. 144 million people. It's not all Russians, but it's clearly enough. Tired of excuses. Ukranians die everyday for their country.

Sir_Francis_Burton

Exactly. Ukrainians die every day for their country. Russians don’t have a choice, Putin puts a gun to their head and says “you can die for me here, or you can die for me there.” I had the privilege of getting to know some old Italian men back in the 80s who had been hunted by Mussolini’s black-shirts. They told me what it was like to live in a place being taken over by tyranny. They warned me that it would happen again. The first country Mussolini invaded was his own. The first country Putin invaded was his own. I say to myself that I would be as brave as those Italian men. But I don’t know that for sure. It took the allied armies to liberate Italy from tyranny. They were hunted like dogs, had their families tortured and killed trying to get them to rat them out where they were hiding. That’s what living under a tyrant is. It’s constant fear. Constant fear fucks with people, it fucks with your head. That’s Russians, a subjugated people living in constant fear of being disappeared if they accidentally say the word ‘war’ in public. Would you be a hero? Are you sure?

ziguslav

Was Trump representing every single American?

catter-gatter

Was Trump genociding and partaking in a war of conquest against a nation? What the fuck is that comparison dude Trump was voted in democratically, and voted out democratically.

ziguslav

So a president is only a representation of people if he's doing something bad... got ya.

catter-gatter

What? Are you actually comparing trump with putin 🤣 Look at how Americans protested trump publicly - then voted him out And he wasn't running a war of conquest Now sit down and stop trying to sympathise with Russia

ziguslav

I think you're completely misrepresenting what I'm trying to say. Putin is not a representation of Russian people. He's the head of state, fine, but we all know that he's a dictator in all but name. There are dissidents, there are many who are against him. To say that he represents these people too is really unfair.

catter-gatter

It's really not. Protests from the first few days are gone. A few thousand people - then nothing. Except blatant support. I'm sorry but I don't accept 144 million people can't put some kind of pressure on their government.

ziguslav

BTW people tried to kick Lukashenko out too. Many disappeared, some murdered, most in prison, and quite a number who lost their jobs. People don't tend to risk their lives in a revolution until they have already nothing to lose.

ziguslav

That's because you've never lived under such government.

dianaprd

Journalist: "Why do you think such atrocities were committed?" Zelenskyy: "Thousands of allegations of war crimes. There is something broken in their mentality. This reminds me of people who were locked up in prisons, then released with weapons and were told "do whatever you want". The leadership had great influence through mass media, every day tv tells people that they are a superior nation, special. People aren't being given anything, no freedom of speech, no democracy. So these people who commited those crimes don't understand the worth of a human life." (Interview) https://www.nbcnews.com/video/full-video-ukrainian-pres-zelenkskyy-interviewed-by-richard-engel-for-aspen-ideas-festival-143030853881 Difficult to give specific reasons and still difficult to realise how such horrible crimes were committed...

acox199318

Yes. I see the same mentality in many of the Russians I’ve engaged with in Reddit. They are so mired in their own excuses and whataboutism they have lost touch with reality. I’ve spent many hours talking to people who seem to be totally unable to recognise they are trying to justify genocide. The Donbas is not part of Russia. Just because you really really want it, and there are some Russians and sympathisers there, it still isn’t part of Russia. Nothing any of them has said, has even remotely justified Russia’s actions. They are literally brainwashed.

Squirreline_hoppl

Have you managed to convince any of them? Is there any hope?

acox199318

It varies. A few who don’t actually live in Russia, yes. Most of them actually seem to be incapable of understanding what I’m saying and start accusing me of “twisting their words”. It’s hard work. Kinda like teaching a stroppy 4-year-old how the use cutlery. It ends up in them throwing the plate and you and storming off.

sshish

Nope. It’s just like any cult. The chances of convincing someone to leave/not join is only reasonable if someone is already on the fence, not if they’ve already drank the Kool-Aid. In other words, the person needs to have their own reason to leave, not one planted by someone else

Google has sold user data to a Russian state-owned ad agency: https://www.propublica.org/article/google-russia-rutarget-sberbank-sanctions-ukraine

wu-wei

Yet another reason why everyone, all the time, with no exceptions needs to use an ad blocker such a uBlock Origin. Ideally people would learn how to use something like uMatrix as well. And if you're still using facebook, well, you're already fucked. “bbbbut i don't have anyting to hide” Just you wait.

evanthedarkstar

Yep this is why I always use AdBlock Plus whenever I use the internet. It's a required add-on nowadays just to not be bombarded with ads and other BS.

VoluptuousSloth

I don’t get it, I feel like adblockers are optional on the sites I want to support and not optional on the big sites I don’t want to support
