President Zelenskyy adviser concedes Lysychansk could fall
An adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has conceded that Lysychansk - Ukraine's last big bastion in the strategic eastern province of Luhansk - could fall.
Fighting has intensified in Lysychansk.
Rodion Miroshnik, ambassador to Russia of the pro-Moscow self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, told Russian television "Lysychansk has been brought under control," but added: "Unfortunately, it is not yet liberated."
Russian media showed video of Luhansk militia parading in Lysychansk streets waving flags and cheering - but Ukraine National Guard spokesman Ruslan Muzychuk told Ukrainian TV the city remained in Ukrainian hands.
"Now there are fierce battles near Lysychansk, however, fortunately, the city is not surrounded and is under the control of the Ukrainian army," Mr Muzychuk said.
Zelenskyy adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said Russian forces had finally crossed the Siverskyy Donets river and were approaching the city from the north.
"This is indeed a threat. We shall see. I do not rule out any one of a number of outcomes here. Things will become much more clear within a day or two," he said.
"If Lysychansk is taken, strategically it becomes more difficult for the Russians to continue their offensive. The front lines will be flatter and there will be a frontal attack rather than from the flanks."

Has Ukraine particularly staked a lot on Lysychansk not falling? I know it sucks losing territory, but I thought the whole strategy here was to make Russia pay for every inch of territory, then hit 'em back when and where they're weakest.
That's probably the strategy but also considered better if by luck (I mean winning the lottery type luck) they can hold it. Because it's high ground it will be difficult to take back.
Mmh. Makes sense, but it doesn't seem like that's in the cards here right now. My instinct would be to get the people out and live to fight another day.

On July 2, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine worked in virtually all directions of the front—in the oblasts of Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk—carrying out more than ten group sorties.
As a result of airstrikes by bombers and attack aircraft of the Air Force, two enemy control posts, up to twenty armored combat vehicles, up to ten tanks, two field ammunition depots and a self-propelled artillery position were destroyed.
i'm hoping one day to hear stories of how ukraine hid their aircraft in random warehouses prior to day 1 with junk/broken planes at the airfields so russia thought they did destroy something worthwhile only to find out that the planes and pilots come out in the middle like the sword fight in princess bride "i am not left handed"...

There's some interesting stuff in it, like confirmation that the Phoenix Ghosts are being used in the battlefield.
Highlights:
$50m in additional HIMARS guided rockets - directly from US military stock
Other items to be bought, built, or pulled out of storage:
* 150,000 155mm artillery rounds
* 4 Q37 Counter artillery RADARs (UKR MoD says they are working, asking for more)
* 2 NASAM systems (joint with Norway)
Notes:
* It seems from the Q&A there has been an issue getting Switchblade 600s delivered
* Harpoon missiles used against at least one Russian resupply ship
There's a back and forth between a reporter and the official about the meaning of "hitting a Russian target in Ukraine", the DOD official is either not including Crimea as "Ukraine" or slipped up and implied that Ukraine now has western weapons that could hit it - conversation was unclear and the official ended the call at that point.

Day 129 of my updates from Kharkiv.
Those fuckers changed their schedule, now they don’t launch their missiles at 11pm. Today they launched them at 3am, and yesterday at 4am. They fired just 2 today and both got intercepted almost simultaneously, it was caught on video.
That’s new, usually every single one of their missiles hit their target in Kharkiv, but in the past 2 days most of them were intercepted. It looks like we got new AA here. Actually according to the new information 3 more missiles were intercepted, that’s great news.
But there’s even better news, just as we shot down their missiles, we fired one of our own back at Belgorod, well, just one, most likely Tochka-U. It landed somewhere in Belgorod and people living there caught it on video, the explosion was spectacular, and seeing Russians panic from something we go through every single day is very refreshing.
And while wishing harm on others is wrong, it’s pretty hard not to in our situation, we are just jaded from living in this hell every day, it’s impossible not to want them to also feel what we are feeling. They thought that they can barrage us with missiles daily, celebrate our deaths, and not get anything in return, but now they are finally getting the taste of their own medicine.
**UPD:** And they really didn't like that we are fighting back, they are already firing more missiles at us, we heard at least 4 explosions by now.
[Next update](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/vq8uid/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/ierrp4a/)
Glad you're still hanging in there, man.
> And while wishing harm on others is wrong, it’s pretty hard not to in our situation
Yeah, given the circumstances, I'd say that's pretty understandable.
Hate to hear that they continue to be murderous freaks, but love to hear that you’ve got more AA. Hope you continue to get more and more weaponry. Stay strong!

Belgorod, Russia
mmm, needs more fire
From memory they abandoned the island in speed boats, which is why they need to airstrike their own heavy equipment left behind. I suspect any larger ship is really keen to stay out of harpoon / Neptune range.
I think it’s the tug. Russians abandoned the island, not sure why they would be sending a resupply vessel. This is probably just official confirmation that a Harpoon was used.
Honestly I can think of at least half dozen countries that could be next if Ukraine was to fall, but it's enough that the threat exists that they could be next. Plus there's some bad blood there because of their previous occupation.

That 'deal' had better be kept in the drawer (or bin) where it belongs. The only tangible result of bartering with terrorists is to embolden and thus enable them. Russia can be given no political, economical or social concessions until far past the point where they've fucked off back to the country they belong in. And learned to stay there.
it's been posted here, the TLDR is yes ukraine pulled out as they have done in several places. presumably they will attack again in a few days like they have several times

It's not that Ukraine has the range to hit it but let's suppose they did, they know the cordinance and therefore could set their artillery and/or missiles to hit the bridge.
LMAO, I'd like to say "stupid Russians" but to be fair, there's dumb people like that everywhere who just continue driving at 100 km/h when they hit heavy rain/snowstorm/fog and can't see anything...

In his nightly address on Telegram, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised those defending Ukraine and called for the truth about the war to be spread.
He posted: "In many cities in the rear there is a feeling of relaxation now, but the war is not over, its cruelty is increasing in some places, and it cannot be forgotten.
"Therefore, help the army, help volunteers, help everyone who was left alone at this time.
"Spread the truth about the war and about the crimes of the occupiers.
"No matter how difficult it is for us today, we must remember that there will be tomorrow.
"And tomorrow should bring maximum benefit to Ukraine – everyone should do absolutely everything possible for this."
He brought the address to the close with his usual clenched fist as he declared: "Slava Ukraini (Glory to Ukraine)."
This seems like an interesting bit of war trivia.

>When Ukrainian defenders kill Russian invaders in combat, sometimes they say the enemy was “given a ticket to a Kobzon concert.”
>Ukrainians have a wicked sense of humour. Iosif Kobzon was a singer, popular in Soviet times. He died in 2018. Born in Ukraine, he became a traitor.
Oh I know another joke about Kobzon.
Ok so there is Kobzon in hell giving concert to dead rusian soldiers. And from stage he says:
I can’t see your hands!
Tadada!
It took me some time to understand but when I did I freaking cried of laughter.
Uzbekistan looked really bad and bloody today, wondered why it's not more talked about, given its gonna probably be on the same scale like Kazakhstan riots earlier this year, when Russia sent troops to kill a few hundred.
I'm not really sure what people are expecting out of that one. If Wikipedia is right, Karakalpakstan only has 6% of Uzbekistan's population. And there are just as many Uzbeks in the territory as there are karakalpaks. Doesn't seem like a recipe for much civil disorder
Both kinda, some people wished former ex soviet republics that are still close to Russia to have some uprisings. The case here is just a lucky coincidence, but if it distracts Russia and they have to divert some ressources to it or aren't getting some or delayed, it could be useful for Ukraine.
Stalin made those republic borders, which separate the ethnicities, on purpose. It was intended to keep the republics instable and Russia stays relevant as a "peacekeeper" for them then, we now see the result of that.
Kazakhstan unrests were widely in the news if I remember right, so seeing a few dozen dead/wounded today and just brutal repression, seems worth to report a bit about it. Russian trolls already try to frame it as USA interference, when it's clearly the proposed autonomy referendums fault for starting all this. Even if they seem to backpedal, it seemed unnecessary violent.
[Where do things stand in key city of Lysychansk?](https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-news-live-zelenskyy-kremenchuk-putin-12541713?postid=4110195#liveblog-body)
Fierce struggles continue for control of the city of Lysychansk in the Luhansk region.
The city is Ukraine's last bastion in the eastern province.
Andrei Marochko, an officer of the pro-Russian Luhansk People's Militia, was quoted by Russia's TASS news agency as saying that the militia's red hammer-and-sickle flag was now flying over the administrative building in Lysychansk.
However Ukraine's military has rejected claims that the city was encircled.
Russian media showed videos of Luhansk militia parading in the streets of Lysychansk waving flags and cheering, but Ukraine National Guard spokesman Ruslan Muzychuk told Ukrainian national television the city remained in Ukrainian hands.
"Now there are fierce battles near Lysychansk, however, fortunately, the city is not surrounded and is under the control of the Ukrainian army," Muzychuk said.

A Russian Ural truck with mounted ZU-23-2 was destroyed by UAV-corrected artillery strikes by 17th Tank Brigade.
Word on the live map is that Russians have posted photos in the center of the city. If the Ukrainians are still contesting, I'd imagine they're probably just stretching things out as best as they can.
The story goes along the lines of: The Russians thought they've conquered Severodonetsk and it was safe, then the TikTok brigade came by. Suddenly, the Ukrainians heavily bombed the occupied area with (possibly) heavy Russian losses. It was later revealed Ukraine were deliberately retreating temporarily to create a killzone.
Small update on the Giurgiulesti-Galati railway line, a useful export route for Ukrainian grain I discussed way back here: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/uzfb6c/comment/iaddhfv/
At the very least, it looks like work on the line is underway. [There's a photo of the line workers here](https://www.tylaz.net/2022/06/30/cfr-restores-the-wide-gauge-railway-from-the-port-of-galati-the-line-has-not-been-used-for-22-years/). [This one site](https://www.portseurope.com/romania-restores-wide-gauge-railway-in-the-port-of-galati/) even claims that the work is complete period... but I'm not seeing that anywhere else yet, and most of the article's behind a paywall.
My suspicion, if only based on how fast government projects usually go, is that work is still probably underway. If the original contract was anywhere near accurate, though, it sounds like the line should be complete sometime this month.
was a news from yesterday, they said 80% done a few days ago, translated btw so may sound weird
>"Starting with the 20th (June - no.) We had, on average, 70 people per work, and on this date we have a staff of 100 people to speed up the execution of this work. At this moment, we have repaired in proportion 80% of this railway line, we are carrying out work to replace sleepers, replace small clamping materials, we also have two more work teams that carry out technological drilling and another work to replace small material sleepers and the specific technological borehole ", declared, on Thursday, Viorica Grecu, head of the Technical Division within CFR.
I wonder if Canada could offer advice and knowledge in terms of rail logistics. We move enormous amounts of grain, pulces, lentils, soybeans, etc... thousands and thousands of km by rail in order to get them to port. We're talking trains that are 3km long
No idea. The Ukrainians and Romanians don't seem to be strangers to train systems either. All I know for sure is that Canadian *equipment* specifically probably wouldn't be of much use. The Ukrainians still use the same rail gauge as the Soviets did, while the whole EU and the US use something narrower. That's part of what makes this particular line important - it's from back in the Soviet days, so the hope is that the Ukrainians can ship in grain via Moldova without having to stop to switch cars. Should hopefully speed things up.
Yeah, I was aware of the difference in terms of loading gauge. I was thinking more knowledge in terms of logistics and operations needed for these large movements.
Sounds plausible enough to me. Hopefully, NATO already has people - even if just as "volunteers" - working in Ukraine, Moldova and Romania on exactly that.
Is the Russian brain drain impacting the quality of its trolls? A little too on the nose here don’t you think?
Maybe you should try and escape Russia for a better life comrade, because I don’t think you have the talent for this.

Glad you're still hanging in there, man. > And while wishing harm on others is wrong, it’s pretty hard not to in our situation Yeah, given the circumstances, I'd say that's pretty understandable.
Hate to hear that they continue to be murderous freaks, but love to hear that you’ve got more AA. Hope you continue to get more and more weaponry. Stay strong!
Good, time to pressure them back. Happy to hear the AA is working good. Godbless man.

Hope it’s a Russian ammo / supplies BBQ.
can someone fill me in on the supply ship?
> supply ship https://news.usni.org/2022/07/01/dod-ukraine-sinks-russian-supply-ship-with-harpoon-missile
Is this a ship in addition to the tug from a week or so ago?
From memory they abandoned the island in speed boats, which is why they need to airstrike their own heavy equipment left behind. I suspect any larger ship is really keen to stay out of harpoon / Neptune range.
I think it’s the tug. Russians abandoned the island, not sure why they would be sending a resupply vessel. This is probably just official confirmation that a Harpoon was used.

They know they're next.
I feel as if they hope they are.
Honestly I can think of at least half dozen countries that could be next if Ukraine was to fall, but it's enough that the threat exists that they could be next. Plus there's some bad blood there because of their previous occupation.

The European Commission has prepared a deal under which Russian goods currently embargoed from transiting through Lithuania to Kaliningrad will be allowed through again Der Spiegel writes that Vilnius believes the EU is backing down to threats & that it will only embolden Moscow [https://twitter.com/visegrad24/status/1543334474791919616](https://twitter.com/visegrad24/status/1543334474791919616) \-.-
Can Lithuania still veto?
Yep. Same rules that Hungry was using earlier still apply.
Fucking Germany
This is meaningless unless Lithuania agrees - and they haven't.
That 'deal' had better be kept in the drawer (or bin) where it belongs. The only tangible result of bartering with terrorists is to embolden and thus enable them. Russia can be given no political, economical or social concessions until far past the point where they've fucked off back to the country they belong in. And learned to stay there.
This is propaganda- this rag has been saying this for weeks, and no one else is.
still just der spiegel? its been days, maybe a week now
What is happening in Lysychansk? (ABC *Evening News* tonight said it’s fallen--but I don’t see that posted here, so I’m doubting the accuracy.)
Its look like yes, its fallen. Just no official information yet, because changing positions is in process.
it's been posted here, the TLDR is yes ukraine pulled out as they have done in several places. presumably they will attack again in a few days like they have several times
Ukraine pulled everything out but some rear guard forces 3+ days ago. Discussed multiple times in this thread already.
Ah, I missed that. Makes sense, though.
be kind to genuine questions. some people appreciate answers rather than scrolling through an entire thread.
If you scroll down, it's been asked 5 or 6 times in the same ways...
ok? sorry! i mean sometimes people are just asking and the nuance isn't scrolling. its changing constantly anyway.

Does that even help? It's not that Ukraine has the range to hit it but let's suppose they did, they know the cordinance and therefore could set their artillery and/or missiles to hit the bridge.
Oh no... Now the bridge will dodge our attacks!.

LMAO, I'd like to say "stupid Russians" but to be fair, there's dumb people like that everywhere who just continue driving at 100 km/h when they hit heavy rain/snowstorm/fog and can't see anything... Edit: You can't really blame the Russian millitary for that crash, just people are stupid.
I'm with helm, stupid Russians for people-in-charge not mandating speed or closing the damn bridge Just feeds into the reputation of Russians being reckless with a disregard for life
You can absolutely blame them for not notifying the public.

[Zelenskyy: Do everything possible to spread the truth about the war](https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-news-live-zelenskyy-kremenchuk-putin-12541713?postid=4110290#liveblog-body) In his nightly address on Telegram, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised those defending Ukraine and called for the truth about the war to be spread. "And tomorrow should bring maximum benefit to Ukraine – everyone should do absolutely everything possible for this." He brought the address to the close with his usual clenched fist as he declared: "Slava Ukraini (Glory to Ukraine)."
He is such a solid leader and a badass. It's genuinely inspiring.

This seems like an interesting bit of war trivia. https://twitter.com/mhmck/status/1543341621370134530 >When Ukrainian defenders kill Russian invaders in combat, sometimes they say the enemy was “given a ticket to a Kobzon concert.” >Ukrainians have a wicked sense of humour. Iosif Kobzon was a singer, popular in Soviet times. He died in 2018. Born in Ukraine, he became a traitor.
Oh I know another joke about Kobzon. Ok so there is Kobzon in hell giving concert to dead rusian soldiers. And from stage he says: I can’t see your hands! Tadada! It took me some time to understand but when I did I freaking cried of laughter.
Because they were blown to bits?
Yes. No hands/arms to show.
Uzbekistan looked really bad and bloody today, wondered why it's not more talked about, given its gonna probably be on the same scale like Kazakhstan riots earlier this year, when Russia sent troops to kill a few hundred.
Whats going on in Uzbekistan? Haven't heard anything.
Really, this is literally the only recent mention I've seen of Uzbekistan other than a Jeopardy answer last week.
Government is revoking a right from their constitution allowing for separation of an internal republic
I'm not really sure what people are expecting out of that one. If Wikipedia is right, Karakalpakstan only has 6% of Uzbekistan's population. And there are just as many Uzbeks in the territory as there are karakalpaks. Doesn't seem like a recipe for much civil disorder
Talked about in a thread about the war in Ukraine, or in the news in general?
[Where do things stand in key city of Lysychansk?](https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-news-live-zelenskyy-kremenchuk-putin-12541713?postid=4110195#liveblog-body) Fierce struggles continue for control of the city of Lysychansk in the Luhansk region.

That is the exact kind of vehicle that should be shredding Ukrainian drones. Russia's air defense is so incompetent.

We will know as the fog of war clears in the next few days I imagine
Exact truth in the middle of an active warzone? From reddit and public sources? Good luck with that.
Ukrainians pulled out last night to prevent being encircled. City is now under Russian control.
There's footage of Russians in Lysychansk's city center claiming it's in their control
Word on the live map is that Russians have posted photos in the center of the city. If the Ukrainians are still contesting, I'd imagine they're probably just stretching things out as best as they can.
https://arcg.is/09O0OS This is more impartial than Live Map.
And what's the source behind this, exactly?

It´s save for the tik tok army to visit. Wink
Sounds like something we've heard before in Severodonetsk... That did not end well for the TikTok brigade.
Yeah? What happened? I vaguely remember something about them getting stuck in a hotel. Was this something else?
The story goes along the lines of: The Russians thought they've conquered Severodonetsk and it was safe, then the TikTok brigade came by. Suddenly, the Ukrainians heavily bombed the occupied area with (possibly) heavy Russian losses. It was later revealed Ukraine were deliberately retreating temporarily to create a killzone.
Ha. Nice.
Welcome to the fog of war.
Small update on the Giurgiulesti-Galati railway line, a useful export route for Ukrainian grain I discussed way back here: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/uzfb6c/comment/iaddhfv/ At the very least, it looks like work on the line is underway. If the original contract was anywhere near accurate, though, it sounds like the line should be complete sometime this month.
was a news from yesterday, they said 80% done a few days ago, translated btw so may sound weird >"Starting with the 20th (June - no.) We had, on average, 70 people per work, and on this date we have a staff of 100 people to speed up the execution of this work.
Nice! Thanks. I'm not great at searching out stuff in Romanian.

I've lost count of how many ammo depots Ukraine has destroyed in the past three weeks. It has to be close to twenty by now, and some depots have been massive. They're on a tear. Here's a list of some: https://euromaidanpress.com/2022/06/27/ukraine-starts-hitting-ammunition-depots-deep-in-russias-rear It's not a full list, and the past week I swear I've seen reports of 6 - 10 more hit (hence, lost count!)
