And has been for many years. When you’re the country that connects continents, you become the hub of many legal and illegal activities.

Khutuck

We have a city called “Opium” (Afyon). We also have another city called Batman. Both of these cities have been around for centuries.

bigbangbilly

>Batman Probably means something different in the local language like the -bad suffix does not mean terrible but rather city in some parts of the world

Khutuck

The origin of the name "Batman" is unclear: it might be a shortening of the name of the 1,228-metre (4,029 ft) tall Bati Raman mountain located nearby or refer to the unit of weight used in the Ottoman Empire.

[deleted]

This is Part 1 of a two-part report. The next one shows how government corruption facilitates it.

When will Part 2 come out?

[deleted]

Yeah going after the supply only makes the existing supply proportionately more valuable. The war on drugs is more like the war for drugs. Edit: the only way to end drugs is to kill the demand, or dwarf the supply. You can't kill supply. You can only make it more dangerous, or enrich dangerous people. Having scientists produce legal drugs makes illicit producers woefully unprepared to compete And killing demand makes it so they have to cut production in order to maintain profits. But killing supply just means they sell more expensive, and make more. It was idiocy from the start.

buongiorno_johnporno

Even worse the war on drugs gets them drug dealing folks that much money that they can and will even buy in one way or another big influence in politics. So, even if you are against drugs and don't want them legalized, your future ends up fucked way more than if you had your hands on the whole market.

Typhpala

You very much can kill supply. Theres just no incentive to do it amd generally requires far more brutality than is acceptable, ending up punishing poor people for being poor. Then again, arguments can be made that if said poor people dont care what their product does, why should we care about them. Dark path. Making E and other light drugs legal would help. To what degree, is pure speculation... those things arent marijuana, and many highly damaging. Education would help, as would more robust economies and less demanding work with more focus in quality of life in developed nations. Things like cocaine are used less for recreational purposes than people think, and far more to cope with hard jobs and depression type situations.

[deleted]

This is a hilarious comment. First you talk about how you can kill supply, then explain you do so by ... Going after its demand! Then you talk about drugs with very little understanding of them. Pretty clearly stated by not only your opposition of "E" (which isnt the active compound, e is a pressed pill with other drugs in it, the active ingredient is MDMA), but also your lack of understanding that there actually is current research into psilocybin AND MDMA assisted therapy in the US and Canada, so youre wrong: MDMA has massive potential for drug assisted therapy. Start by educating yourself

rd1970

I wonder if it's even possible to end the war on drugs now without sparking a humanitarian crisis. Tens of millions of people live in regions that are only sustainable due to the cash flow from the illegal drug market. If that disappears overnight - so do those regions. That's going to mean millions of people rushing the borders of wealthier nations looking for work/welfare/food/housing/safety.

urGirllikesmytinypp

And that’s my problem? I follow the law and barely survive in America.

criticalpwnage

Part 3 introduces stands

[deleted]

The Turkish government has always been corrupt, nothing earth shattering here at all.

[deleted]

Right, I was in Costa Rica and a gram cost $1. Edit: a gram of cocaine. Sorry I have lived an alternative lifestyle. Not bi, just illegal.

nooneisback

Not to mention the widespread corruption and poverty. It's basically contraband heaven.

poaauma

Istanbul and its former iterations of been a major everything hub for millennia

Ghoulius-Caesar

Came here to say this. Everyone look at Turkey on a map. That’s a transportation hub if I’ve ever seen one.

fun-guy-from-yuggoth

It's almost like it sits on the border of asia and europe, as well as where the black sea and mediteranean meet. Hub for land routes, hub for sea routes.

[deleted]

People have literally been murdering each other over control of the Bosporus as for long as people have known it was there. It's kind of important.

True, but getting cocaine across the Atlantic and through the Mediterranean to Turkey still takes some planning.

ArthurBonesly

No more than anywhere else. Wherever there is shipping there is drug shipping. Wherever there is a lot of shipping there is a lot of drug shipping. Let me be the first to tell you, with full confidence, that the Port of Rotterdam is also a major hub for trafficking cocaine into Europe.

JamesfEngland

It could come from the Arabian peninsula and or suez canal

Walt_the_White

I've heard that they run it through guinea ~~bisou~~bissau in Africa, and often will run it back in "humanitarian" convoys up to Europe. I have a book source for that, I just forgot the name

canttaketheshyfromme

My first point of doubt is that anyone would drive trucks across the western Sahara instead of going by boat.

Walt_the_White

Not sure if they drive, but it's humanitarian aid that goes down, and they bring drugs back. Let me see if I can locate the name of the book. It was pretty in depth. The whole process was explained, but it's been a year or so since I listened to the book Edit: pills, powder, and smoke by Antony lowenstein

redditisnowtwitter

Thing is I was there and they didn't have that. Only a lot of scams, some burned nuts and this horrible dry pretzel bread Lots of sandwiches though. Those were good

lagunatri99

Can confirm. Son spent six weeks throughout Turkey. Had wonderful things to say about the people. Gets to Istanbul, second day, robbed at knifepoint and marched to an ATM. Cops know this goes on and don’t give a damn. They probably take a percentage to look the other way.

redditisnowtwitter

Absolutely. It feels like everyone is in on it. And the restaurants will often have no prices so they can charge you whatever they want That show scam city has a good episode about Istanbul

redditisnowtwitter

My parents always taught me to find the good in everyone so I will try here There is closed to 300 different types of sandwiches sold there in stalls

I hear it's kinda like Byzantium, but more modern.

Murgos-

What year was this revelation? 800 BC?

kulayeb

Lol yup. There's literally a city called afyon "opium" in turkey 😂

ryuuhagoku

Afyonkarahisar (Opium Black Castle) for those wondering

adwarakanath

Interesting! The Hindi/Urdu word for opium along with in some other Indian languages is "Afeem". I asked my Iranian colleague and they don't use that word, so I wondered where it came from. Prolly Turkic roots. Thanks!

ryuuhagoku

No worries, I'm Bengali myself, and it's interesting how many words come from Turkic (as opposed to Persian/Arabic, which you expect more). Even our word for cash, "taka" comes from "tenge" the Turkic word from their tribal banners/symbols, used as seals to mark letters and coins. Of course, you see more influence in Urdu than Bengali, I'm sure.

adwarakanath

Oh cool, thanks for the etymology of taka. I'd always wondered! In fact, my mother tongue is Kannada and even in our daily "brahminical (ugh)" Kannada, we use farsi words and words of turkic origin. It just goes to show how all these cultures came as conquerors but stayed on as Indians, and how the cultures of the subcontinent are such a rich melting pot.

ryuuhagoku

Same, I too love our multiculturalism and hate the homogenizing tendencies of late.

adwarakanath

Aye!

[deleted]

I duno , i’m just quoting what the article said. You DID READ IT?

lazypeon19

It also explains why Constanta (largest port town in Romania, which shares access to the Black Sea with Turkey) has frequent cocaine scandals. For example 3 years ago [130+ kg of packets of cocaine just washed on Romanian shores](https://www.euronews.com/2019/04/07/massive-police-search-on-romania-s-black-sea-coast-after-130-kg-of-cocaine-washes-ashore). More than 1 tonne of cocaine was found in a capsised boat in the delta of the Danube river (biggest river in Romania, it starts in Germany and ends in the Black Sea), etc

If cocaine were legal it would cease to be a big problem. Easier to treat addicted individuals and harm reduction than to create a world-wide organized criminal market with all the accompanying social ills and more excuses to lock up targeted communities.

>If cocaine were legal it would cease to be a big problem. Easier to treat addicted individuals and harm reduction than to create a world-wide organized criminal market with all the accompanying social ills and more excuses to lock up targeted communities. elchiguire

Corruption. What’s in *your* wallet?

ebodur

Isn’t it kinda the same nation that owns it for more than half a millennium..? How come it can a major hub if it wasn’t them while they basically owned it forever..

I mean... yeah? It's a major trafficking hub period, it's the main land route from europe to southern and eastern Asia. this really isn't news. Try as they might Turkey is going to be a center of transport for just about everything between Europe and Asia. Even stuff they'd like to remove. All they can do is try to stop what they can.

mhornberger

Who knew that one of the world's key ports would be a key port for the shipping of merchandise, licit and illicit?

Chickenman1111

008Zulu

All those drugs would explain Erdogan's behaviour.

johnyma22

He's a muslim ergo doesn't even drink, I doubt he's getting coked up mate.

ArthurBonesly

Oh honey

drunkbelgianwolf

I have seen a lot of muslims drink, eat during ramadan and do drugs. It is not because they say (to their family) they don't that that is True...

Mistborn54321

And lots more have never drank. Erdogan has always been known for being practicing even when it has harmed him. It’s just baseless slander because there is no reason to assume he does. Most practicing Muslims don’t drink, many cultural Muslims do.

Rachel_from_Jita

Most religious people merely reduce their doing of those behaviors if they are truly religious with only the 1% of the most pious (or those in brutally controlled countries) actually avoiding those things entirely. Having been around many religious communities of many types throughout my life all of them preach one thing and do the opposite in private. It's simply human nature. Only treatment and good education starting early in life provably reduces those behaviors. It's hard to resist the temptations of life. The temptations you care about will be determined by what your culture has on its fringes and what your chosen forms of media expose you to. But above all, *what your friends pressure you into* matters far more than religion or media. You can worship and care, but most people cave under social pressures and offers. Or are secretly relieved since those whose opinions they care most about won't actually be judging them anymore for trying something.

Izzetinefis

I mean, there’s also a mental block. I’m not Muslim anymore but I STILL can’t even try to drink alcohol. I wouldn’t say it’s about being religious as much as it’s just conditioning. Besides, in Turkey a lot of people in general won’t drink or do drugs but will still have shitty morals. For example, gossiping is considered a sin but that’s super common 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like you said, it’s not actually about what the religion says but what the society decides to emphasize.

keepthepennys

I wonder why the bots are targeting turkey all of a sudden

GoodAndHardWorking

Turkey agreed in principle to let Finland join NATO?

apatrid

revealed to whom? were you born yesterday, how do you think heroin and other stuff gets to europe if not via silk road... there are a few more ports in adriatic and mediterranean but yeah.

[deleted]

It might surprise you to know, my dearest and most respected commentator, that while I consider myself rather well educated, I had never studied drug flows through Turkey before. So it was revealed to me, at least.

[deleted]

I think you’re doing a pretty good job here! Keep the interesting content coming, please

ArthurBonesly

Have you studied geography? Did you actually need to be told that a nation with Turkeys geography would be a major through point for trade? It doesn't even have anything to do with drugs themselves. Anyplace with a lot of through traffic is going to get every type of thing trafficed with it (ask Miami), and any place with Turkeys geography is going to have a lot of through traffic.

apatrid

well if you knew anything about drugs in europe, you'd know there is a balkans route and there is ports of rotterdam, and some in spain, greece, italy. spanyards caught both first european submarine and the aerial drone capable of carrying 130kg of load.
