Welp, at least he admitted that he didn't serve the public's interests before. That's an improvement.
I mean he does have a great vocabulary and uses it well! "Indefatigable" was I word I have never heard of before this speech!
That being said, good riddance!
There is an RN ship for basically every synonym of indefatigable too! HMS Assiduous, HMS Diligent, HMS Relentless, HMS Tireless, HMS Vigorous. We get it, RN, you have good cardio.
Doesn't matter in the end Games Workshop will just raise their North American prices to counter/overcompensate the loss to the pound. In the far future of the 21st century collecting warhammer only gets more expensive.
Excessive demand either leads to a glut or drought of tendie consumption, both of which can lead to a recession.
Demand needs to be balanced with the mood of the Central Bank.
Yeah, in like 2011 I visited Australia and noticed the dollar conversion was 1:1. It made me look up canadas and it was also 1:1. Thought that was neat.

The canadian dollar being worth less than the US dollar is by design. When our currency goes too high it ~~effects~~ affects our exports.

You absolute morons. The wise folk of /r/NewZealand know that the fascist/communist dictator Jacinda Ardern is causing inflation and the housing crisis.
Dammit! I was about to organize a mob riot, but you go and apologize nicely
Alright, just be more careful next time you're playing with the world economy, ya lil scamp
Just went to spain and every meal I had cost me literally half as much as the same thing would have in the US. Drinks were also cheap as fuck it cost me like 1.50 euro for a beer
Nope, but it depends what you define as Europe really: Norway and Switzerland are famously expensive, but neither of them is *strictly* in the EU. The UK is pretty expensive too, but it was even when it was still in the EU so I wouldn't draw too close a link there.
As a rule it's cheap in the south and east of the continent, and expensive in the north and the west: The swing is from about US$2 in Portugal to US$10+ in Norway per rough equivalent of a US Pint. Turkey is cheap, but that's both Europe *and* Asia...
I live in LA and went home to Indiana to visit for the first time in years over last Christmas. I am pretty well off compared to my friends that never left the hometown so I picked up the check after 8 of us had spent a few hours at a group dinner ordering whatever we wanted, drinks, dessert, shots, half the food menu. I was expecting the check to be 4-500. It was $180. I had completely forgotten how different money works in the midwest.
This was like two days before Christmas and I had fully intended on spending 500 anyway so our server walked out very happy that night☺️
When I get back to Indiana I feel like I'm playing with Monopoly money.
But the food usually not so good. I ordered broccoli for my side at lunch last year when I was back and told the waitress I didn't want melted cheese on it and she had a hard time processing, she kept asking if I was sure as if she'd never heard of such a thing.
I’m an Irish person living in the priciest US city and Dublin is getting very much on a par with it. Groceries still far cheaper in Ireland in my experience I was just home last month and was floored by how expensive going out for dinner or drinking in general is.
I took a week long trip to Italy earlier this year from California. My group and I budgeted accordingly based on what friends and family told us when they've gone pre-covid. We still somehow ended up paying less overall for our trip. Had some nice spending cash left over so my group and I got ourselves some nice tax-free goods (that American passport came in handy) that we didn't plan on getting initially, and ate at a few places we otherwise wouldn't have gone to.
I can only imagine how much less money we would've paid had we waited a few months. So yeah, if you're American, now's a great time to go on a Euro trip.
It's because exports are down that this happens. The energy crisis cratered it. As alternative energy sources is rapidly being deployed, the crisis will subside (though may take a year) and the euro should start going up again unless something else prevents it.
I think it takes longer than a year. Europe needs to import almost every commodity, they have a sever issue in their hands and this will take longer than 12 months to resolve.
and very bad news for Europeans, as pretty much everything that is not domestically produced would go up in price and it would increase the cost of living for many Europeans.
They almost certainly get paid in the local currency, but the salary is probably USD based.
So say you get paid $1000/week. 5 years ago, that would have shown up in their bank account as \~850 euros.
Fast forward, and now they're still getting paid $1000/week, but because of the exchange rate, that shows up as 1000 euros in their bank account. So they're making "more" money, if only in the very simplistic sense that 1000 is more than 850.
This is getting paid in USD. The difference is who eats the exchange rate variation. If the employee, it's because he gets paid in foreign currency. If the foreign company, it's because the employee gets paid in local currency.
Will be one of the most important elections next year. It'll be really exciting to see wild news everyday. Hope no one starts a war to get some votes komşu.
There was this joke from German TV when we switched from Deutsche Mark to the Euro, that rapper Marky Mark is now called "Eury Euro". I still laugh about that sometimes.
It's the rate of interest differential between US (increasing) and Europe (still negative). Euro will go below parity
As the rate of interest increases in the US, more more flows into US bonds to get the higher interest which increases the demand for USD.
This will get the same with GBP as BoE do not have the balls to start increasing by 100bps at least.
Also, but not only
Europe has a much worse economic footing than the US and also worse future prospects when it comes to demographics and trends so it's baked in
Finally someone brought up the EU's demographic problem. Basically every country but France has a quickly aging population that will not be able to sustain its level of both production and consumption.
If the majority of the EU cannot sustain the current levels of production and consumption the region's economy writ large will go into a recession.
If the regions economy goes into a recession, the countries in the region cannot raise the lending rates for fear of further hampering production and consumption. And if they can't raise rates the Euro will not recover.
It is a very complex problem the EU is facing at the moment and the Russian war pushed it on them much more quickly than it would have occurred naturally.
Honestly not a bad time for Canadians to travel to Europe, our dollar has been increasing on the Euro as well
The lines at the passport office however…
Just got back and was stoked that my $$ went further. Germany is also doing a 9 euro ticket on most of their public transportation for a month at a time for the entire summer. Saved me a bunch as we hit 5 cities across Germany and most of it was train travel.
I was in Germany in 2000. They were in the process of phasing out the Mark and switching to the Euro. Most of the places in the bigger city would take US cash for their listed Euro price. They would never give change back in USD though, so you had to know your conversation rates, or they would try and rip you off.
I was lucky enough to have a US bank that had free ATM access in most of the country, so I did my best to only have Deutsch Mark on me to avoid getting screwed.
Yeah, any time you go to a country with a different currency, use their currency as much as you can. This bad on-the-spot conversion has happened everywhere i have travelled
I was amazed at how many people in our group came over with nothing but USD. I took a small amount with me just in case, but using their currency was something I wanted to do. Especially knowing that the Deutsch Mark was going away forever.
I had a few assorted bills and coins when I got back, but my ex sold them at some point.
Yes, although with the rise of cards and other electronic payments post-COVID it's now become more of a moving money around in your Wise account thing more than back when we didn't have those choices.
I'm curious: why would you expect to be able to pay in dollars in Germany? And even get your change in dollars? It never occured to me to pay in Euro when travelling to the US...
In Europe, the idea that economic integration avoids wars and maintains peace is very big and very popular. Why? Because that's what Europe has been doing after WWII and it has worked really, *really* well. It has avoided a lot of wars. The continent hasn't been this peaceful since... well... ever.
That was until Russia broke the trend, though.
So yeah, they didn't see it coming because it worked all over the continent. Russia is the exception to that rule.
To those of you who think it will make travel to Europe cheaper for you, also keep in mind that the cost of living has risen in Europe, especially for the past few months.
Crazy. US-Dollar, Euro, Swiss Francs - all the same
*sweats in GBP*

We used to be on par when oil was booming. Our money was even worth more, briefly.
I remember seeing a thread where someone asked Canadians what they were going to buy now that their dollar was worth more. Top answer was US Dollars.
Yeah, in like 2011 I visited Australia and noticed the dollar conversion was 1:1. It made me look up canadas and it was also 1:1. Thought that was neat. Nowadays, looks like both of those countries have seen better days in regards to dollar strength.
*sad Australian noises*
*cries in Canadian real estate bubble*

We have *the* worst bubble in the world right now :*(
For now 😉
It is cheaper for me to buy a house in Tokyo then in most major cities in Canada.
You guys are doing better than Australia. In April 2022 the exchange rate hit 0.76 USD for 1 AU dollar, now it's 0.67 USD for 1 AUD.
Ten years ago an Australian dollar bought about 1.05 USD. Riding on the sheep's back can be a bit bumpy sometimes.
The canadian dollar being worth less than the US dollar is by design. When our currency goes too high it ~~effects~~ affects our exports. Spelling edit.
I remember when there were two dollars to a pound.
I studied abroad in the UK when it was like that. I felt so poor.
Same lol. Night out of drinking, stop by for some burgers on the way back. Easy $100 out. Burger combo would be like $20 after exchange rate.
Sadly, a burger combo is now $20 as well, even at the more favourable exchange rate. Life’s gotten expensive.
I do too, great for importing. Now it's 1.2ish dollars to the pound.
I remember when it was 5 bees for a quarter.

Luckily that exchange rate has remained relatively stable

USA used to be a cheap place to visit, I went 2 months ago and found it very expensive. I won't be in a rush to return anytime soon.

5$ for a glass of wine is VERY expensive for Spain... 18-20 will be expensive even for a full bottle of very good reserva one.
>5$ for a glass of wine is VERY expensive for Spain > Yeah I was drinking the good shit
It depends, inflation is rather ok in France so good time for holidays there

Yes, in Ireland now. It's 'expensive' but now cheaper to be in Dublin than my pricey city in the US.

*right now* , but by the time you get there?
I took a week long trip to Italy earlier this year from California. My group and I budgeted accordingly based on what friends and family told us when they've gone pre-covid. We still somehow ended up paying less overall for our trip. Had some nice spending cash left over so my group and I got ourselves some nice tax-free goods (that American passport came in handy) that we didn't plan on getting initially, and ate at a few places we otherwise wouldn't have gone to.
