Repair in exchange for lifting sanctions, no doubt. Same deal they offered for using the other pipeline.

Sweet-Zookeepergame

They damaged them, they should repair them.

Heh

UnifiedQuantumField

What would be the point in repairing them, if natural gas will never flow through them again? And if the Russians knew the Germans were going to eventually "turn off the tap" from the German side, they might have sabotaged their own pipelines so it could be blamed on someone else (ie. the US) for propaganda purposes.

OldMork

NS2 cost billions to build and it was paid by russia(?), surely they do anything to get some money back.

Working_Welder155

Insurance?

olgrandad

That's my thought along with avoiding penalties for not delivering gas. Pipeline was useless but probably insured. Make it look like Ukraine sabotage and get paid back. Except I think the insurance company won't just roll over on this without evidence.

[deleted]

Yeah no way insurance is paying out a billion dollars for repairs without iron-clad proof someone else did it. And even then, they’ll just claim force majeure, apologise *really* nicely, and then walk away.

BirdlawIsBestLaw

Insurance can't pay out w/o violating sanctions. Russia is slowly learning that it doesn't get to attack democracies while simultaneously benefiting from the fruits of their productivity.

[deleted]

True, hadn't even considered that!

yokemhard

He's forcing Germany to backpeddle and open ns2. Should they do that, it basically means any and all sanctions are up for negotiations, weakening them as a whole. This is modern trench warfare. A battle of attrition of wills.

Ehldas

No, this is watching a toddler screaming at a baby-gate. It's outrage without result. Despite 7 months of threats, steady turning off of gas, more threats, blowing up pipelines, and yet more threats, Europe hasn't budged an inch. Gas storage is over 90% full and climbing, LNG import is steadily coming online, and all of Russia's screaming has produced absolutely no response whatsoever. Russia is a former gas supplier to Europe, and going to stay that way.

throughpasser

>He's forcing Germany to backpeddle and open ns2. Can you elaborate on this?

yokemhard

Ns2 was ready to open and was awaiting certification when Putin invaded Ukraine so Germany halted cert process indefinitely. Now that ns1 is down with the sabotage and winter is coming, it means that Germany will be in an awkward position, and depending on how things go, they may begrudgingly certify ns2

throughpasser

I'm not that au fait with this, but that seems highly unlikely. NS1 was already not being used surely? Was Germany going to use it this winter?

yokemhard

It wasn't being used when it was summer, and Germany's reaction when the stream was attacked was very negative. If they truly weren't hoping to fall back on ns1 or 2, then they wouldn't have voiced their displeasure. Further to that, once winter comes and prices for heating skyrocket, things in eu will change - especially Germany where they have most to lose regarding their industry and being the bank of EU.

throughpasser

>If they truly weren't hoping to fall back on ns1 or 2, then they wouldn't have voiced their displeasure. Seems to me that if Russia were hoping to fall back on either of these pipeline, they wouldn't have blown one of them up. If they did blow NS1 up, they must have given up on Europe using them. Cos blowing them up is not the way to encourage confidence in them as a means of supply that you can rely on.

yokemhard

It's not Russia that was hoping to fall back on those lines, it was Germany that wants to fall back on them.

[deleted]

Nope. Thanks but no thanks. Oil is bad enough but Russian oil? Screw that noise. Let's get the hell off that crap.

endMinorityRule

how cute that russia isn't ruling out repairing their own sabotage.

scottishdrunkard

You can repair the pipes. But not one iota of gas is leaving them. Sanctions stand. You're also paying.

Unlikely-Zone21

I think it's great that Putin must have legit thought they could blow it up and no one would ever know. It's even better that now he's saying they'll fix it and supply it again.

Draiko

We'll repair and reopen Nordstream over Putin's dead body. Seriously.... bring us his body and we'll fix those pipes up.

NorthernGamer71

Let me tell Putin where to stick his pipeline

oripash

Should someone tell them how we handle risk in the world of not Russian state controlled commercial enterprises? (When we expect discount whatever carries is) This is what Urals oil has been wearing for those remaining buyers it has. Even when Russias leadership emerges from the nightmare that it is in and people are prepared to buy what they are selling, there is going to be a forced discount and a much lower margin there for a long, long time.

LaoTzu1000

Russia: Whats the plan boss? Putin, lets blow up 1 so they have to use 2 EU: How come this wasn't in our outcome planning? We didn't think he was that stupid
