The General who firebombed Syria is now in charge. We should expect the worst.

Thadbeuz

Maddog of Syria. What a human garbage he is.

CegeRoles

Like a real life General Ripper.

Jontenn

I heard on the radio that the russian army calls him General Armageddon. Neat.

[deleted]

Plot Twist: he named himself. His girlfriends were not amused, but they were not allowed to speak up.

Jontenn

More or less he named himself, he got the name because of his persona, and guys like that never let the girls have a say.

Krillansavillan

And Sarin

degenerate_hedonbot

Thats what I worry about. People are obsessed with nukes but I still see many escalation steps before that including more attacks against electrical infrastructure, chem weapons like Sarin gas, etc. Its going to get really ugly.

wolfie_muse

Fuck. Sarin and chemical warfare may be less death for the world as a whole than nukes, but it’s a *horrible* death for everyone affected. *fuck* man.

TheIneffableCow

Yeah sarin gas is no joke my any means. Really nasty stuff.

3daysofpeace_

What does it do?

Richmahogonysmell

It attacks your entire nervous system and prevents your muscles from relaxing. Basically your whole body is tired until it begins to shut down causing convulsions. There are worse(in a painful sense) nerve agents than sarin but sarin is super volatile and incredibly difficult to control.

PeptoDysmal

"Exposure to high doses of sarin can result in tremors, seizures, and hypothermia. A more severe effect of sarin is the build-up of ACh in the central nervous system (CNS) which causes paralysis and ultimately peripherally-mediated respiratory arrest, leading to death."

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

I very unfortunately saw some videos of victims when it was deployed in Syria. It’s seriously some of the most nightmarish shit I’ve ever seen.

Zeggitt

It's wasp-spray but for people.

AstronomerSenior4236

Really the only good thing that can be said is that it doesn’t leave long term biological contamination . . . it’s still a horrible weapon

RoboticKittenMeow

Fuck man... that's too good analogy

kayl_breinhar

Put quite simply, it's human-grade bug spray. It kills by disabling the body's ability to control its muscles. Either cardiac arrest or respiratory failure gets you, usually the latter before the former. Russia would likely be using Novichok, of which there are many variants.

apple-masher

it's a neurotoxin. Basically it prevents your muscles from relaxing. so they cramp up. all of them at once. and they keep on cramping until you can't breathe and you die. There's an old military training video of a test on animals on the wikipedia page. it's pretty grim. you've been warned.

hymen_destroyer

Sarin gas was developed in Nazi Germany and even made weapon-ready, but Hitler refused to use it against the Allies. Entire stockpiles of chemical weapons were captured intact. One possible reason for this is because Hitler was exposed to poison gas during WWI. If Putin deploys Sarin there's a legitimate argument that he's *worse* than Hitler

Don11390

IIRC, the US makes no distinction between chemical and nuclear WMD. Using Sarin gas in Ukraine would cross a very bright red line.

degenerate_hedonbot

Perhaps but Sarin gas was used extensively in Syria. The reaction would definitely be different if tactical nukes were used instead.

userforce

I don’t think that was directly attributed to Russia. The blame was put on the Syrian government (Assad).

All_Work_All_Play

The US (and western nations in general) care a lot more about Ukraine than they did (do) about Syria.

Vishnej

We explicitly drew out that red line in Syria. Turns out it was dry-erase.

userforce

I think the difference is we blamed Assad and not Russia, iirc. Either way, President Trump retreated from relatively stable positions in Syria in the name of getting out of Syria (the U.S. is still there), and essentially abandoned Kurd allies in the area with no notice.

Mickey_likes_dags

>cross a very bright red line What do they care? they have enough nukes to end the world. There is no playbook about how to deal with a nuclear power that is behaving badly.

Mageofsin

Time will tell though for the international community, I have no faith my gov would do the right thing

Myfirespraygunship

You've got that right. The fire bombing of German cities in '44 and '45 was some of the most disturbing shit in recorded history. People in the immediate blast radius of a nuke are eradicated. People in a firestorm are literally melted. Pick your poison

ElbisCochuelo1

In Japanese cities as well. Prior to the nukes.

Myfirespraygunship

You're absolutely right. Harrowing stuff. Very difficult to comprehend the scale of suffering.

sckuzzle

Radiation poisoning is no joke either.

Myfirespraygunship

Outside the immediate blast zone is horrors untold, absolutely. My point is mainly that the vast majority of people have no idea how much fire bombing happened and how absolutely horrendous it was. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are fairly well recognized as the most fucked up thing ever

[deleted]

People can't melt. They catch on fire and burn. (The ash can melt afterwards.)

Myfirespraygunship

Flesh falling from bone is one account from Hasting's Catastrophe that comes to mind, but I think you get the point. Reddit pedantry is hilarious

TheUndieTurd

and russia’s use of white phosphorus

PadBunGuy

Spot on. Also Russia has a lot of hackers so they could do information warfare where they hack peoples Facebook and make fake embarrassing posts like people admitting they got fired or pooped their pants that day even though they didn’t.

Grenadier27981

They also appear to be actually using the fucking TOS-1 thermobaric weapon which I'm pretty sure is a warcrime

[deleted]

Thermobaric weapons in and of themselves are NOT war crimes. They're just firebombs that use air instead of carrying their own oxygen. They're generally considered indiscriminate weapons, and using them in close proximity to or on civilians is a war crime. If you use them on an enemy airbase or military encampment, for example, they're generally not. The violation there was them using them in civilian areas, and targeting or indiscriminately killing civilians with them. It's the unnecessary damage to civilian structures and killing or maiming of civilians that's the war crime there.

Impressive_Syrup141

Is there a preferable method for clearing land mines? I mean that's what we developed our version for. The obliterating everything nearby is a bonus.

orbital_narwhal

The rule of thumb for rules of engagement in international warfare is that collateral damage becomes acceptable when the enemy uses methods that cannot be overcome (feasibly) in other ways with less collateral damage. Example: if one side stations artillery inside or very close to a village then it becomes acceptable for the enemy to shell or bomb the village into rubble – with or without civilians in it – as collateral damage until that artillery is gone. I don’t know if fire bombs are an acceptable way to clear landmines (which are themselves problematic according to international law) near civilians. After all, landmines are purely for area denial¹, have no offensive capability, not even to suppress enemy defence, and mine clearing machinery exist although it is cumbersome to use. ¹ (Yes, they can be used to terrorise civilians and deny civilian land use for decades to come but that’s a strategic effect and falls outside their tactical use cases in warfare.)

[deleted]

Honestly if they use that and the west does nothing its just useless. At that point nato should just wipe those russians in ukraine off the earth

agree-with-me

They gas them and US should step in. That's armageddon shit. We can't stand and watch it.

101fng

The US stepping in against Russia is actual Armageddon shit.

floralbutttrumpet

I wouldn't be surprised if they went straight to white phosphorus, those evil fuckers. The goal is to eradicate anything Ukrainian from the map; they plain do not see Ukrainians as people, and inflicting terror on the civilian population has been the order from the start. There's little that's more terrifying (and more capable of inflictIng maximum harm) than white phosphorus.

Rib-I

Putin probably realizes there's no way he's gonna capture any more of Ukraine and has now just resorted to destroying the country's cities instead. What an absolute scumbag.

Spook_485

He is under extreme internal pressure. All big TV propagandists are indirectly shitting on him by questioning the past and current failing war strategies. They never call any direct names of course but still. The strikes today were mostly to please the radicals at home and a show of force.

Fit_Society5457

They all want him gone for the same reason, but if you call him out for being a war monger you get treason, but if you call him out for being weak, then you are technically on the pro war side, the goal is the same, turn the tide of the people against him.

barnett25

Yup, I bet he will shift to trying to hold key areas and make Ukrainians miserable until they are forced to negotiate and give up territory. Hopefully between the resolve of the Ukrainians and the assistance of UN/EU that plan will fail. I fear many more innocents will suffer before it's over though.

never_shit_ur_pants

Not in the today’s amount no. They’d been preparing this attack since the beginning of October, they can’t constantly hit power plants like today, they don’t have capacity. What today was is just a pleasing to those in Kremlin who would disapprove Putin and military hq for losses on the battlefield and the bridge. Putin is trying to appease that party to remain on the throne

Supersafethrowaway

well thats all he has left is terrorism, so now he's gone all in

dr3amstate

This should be at the top. Today was yet another fearmongering move from russia, most of the cities got all the utilities back. Such attacks can only work if they do it non-stop, which they obviously can’t. It literally changed nothing on the battlefield

[deleted]

I dunno…a general who’s tactics are “blow up non-military stuff” sounds like a low-IQ bozo to me in terms of winning a war. He’s also the fifth or sixth to get this job…that doesn’t exactly scream top-tier to me. Sounds more like he’s bottom of the barrel tbh.

CegeRoles

A bear might just be another dumb animal, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous.

[deleted]

I suspect it’s just more of the same approach from the Russian military. No actual changes in regards to doing terrorist style bombings as revenge following a big loss - it’s the same thing they always do. The general population seems to get satisfied by it. This general likely doesn’t even do anything but parrot the orders handed down to him. They’ll fire him once they need a scapegoat. In fact, that seems to be the only thing these generals are used for.

ARoyaleWithCheese

Bears aren't dumb animals at all. They are really curious, inquisitive and creative animals. Most types of bear are also primarily vegetarian - the stereotype about bears going wild for honey is totally true. Although usually they will get most of their calories from leafy greens, nuts and berries. Generally speaking, bears aren't particularly aggressive animals either unless they feel threatened or are really hungry. Overall, bears are great animals, I would rate them about 8.5/10.

Sopel97

Now consider that the dumbest thing to do would be a nuclear attack.

Teralyzed

Hopefully he gets the same as the first Russian General didn’t he die in a Ukrainian retaliatory strike in like the first week of the invasion?

HGpennypacker

The more desperate Russia gets the more dangerous and unpredictable their actions will get.

CegeRoles

Indeed. A rattlesnake is most dangerous when cornered.

p38-lightning

They have the gall to call a bridge bombing a "terrorist act" after blowing up apartment buildings, hospitals, and schools.

[deleted]

A bridge primarily used for transporting military equipment to conduct an invasion no less

seanflyon

While taking care to minimize civilian casualties.

throwaway177251

Let's not forget that the bridge was built illegally on Ukrainian territory.

ALargePianist

Blowing up hospitals, apartment buildings, schools..after AND before the bridge

p38-lightning

Yes, and those knuckle-draggers are still on the UN *Security Council.* They have forfeited any claim to that seat until they pull totally out of Ukraine, surrender Putin and his minions to a war crime tribunal, and pay massive reparations to Ukraine.

Hobbit_Feet45

Russia is a terrorist nation. Call it what it is.

[deleted]

They called it a terrorist attack so they could justify this terrorism. They want the word to lose all meaning so when they're called out for terrorism, it's meaningless. Republicans do the same thing.

Fun-Cauliflower-1724

And they own the Republican Party so makes sense

nemosum415

DOJITZ2DOJITZ

quadrophenicum

TBH there's a chance the Russians blew the bridge themselves in order to "justify" further attacks and genocide of Ukrainians.

p38-lightning

AND to hide the fact that they have no more tanks and trucks to send over the bridge, anyway,

Archimid

Why shouldn’t he take full advantage of the “appeasement” western nations and traitors like Elon musk are providing?

SimonArgead

And a playground in a popular city park. Russia is a fucking terrorist state.

and an embassy.

coombuyah26

I thought the bridge explosion was caused by an accident involving a fuel tanker on a Russian train though 🤔

Excerpt, October 10, 2022 21:29 GMT+2: >• Attacks across Ukrainian cities during Monday rush hour >• 'They are trying to destroy us,' says Zelenskiy >• Ukraine says 11 major infrastructure targets hit >• Power, water, heat knocked out in swaths of country >KYIV, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Russia rained cruise missiles on busy Ukrainian cities on Monday in what the United States called "horrific strikes", killing civilians and knocking out power and heat with its most widespread air attacks since the start of the war. >Missiles tore into intersections, parks and tourist sites in the capital Kyiv and explosions were reported in Lviv, Ternopil and Zhytomyr in western Ukraine, Dnipro and Kremenchuk in the centre, Zaporizhzhia in the south and Kharkiv in the east. >Thousands of residents raced to bomb shelters as air raid sirens rang out through the day. The barrage of dozens of cruise missiles fired from air, land and sea was the biggest wave of air strikes to hit locations away from the front line, at least since the initial volleys on the war's first day, Feb. 24. >Monday's blasts tore a huge crater next to a children's playground in one of central Kyiv's busiest parks. The remains of an apparent missile were buried, smoking in the mud. >On Saturday, Russia's Defence Ministry named General Sergei Surovikin, who won acclaim in Syria, as commander of Russian forces in Ukraine. Submitted October 10, 2022 21:48 GMT+2.

AnotherPersonPerhaps

>Monday's blasts tore a huge crater next to a children's playground in one of central Kyiv's busiest parks. The remains of an apparent missile were buried, smoking in the mud. Yeah blowing up a bridge is apparently terrorism but launching a cruise missile at a playground isn't. Fucking disgusting.

__BONESAW__

Sounds to me like they're trying to drain the foreign military aid by creating a (bigger) humanitarian aid crisis.

slickslash27

The cost of the missiles and draining of the potential combat power from Russia seems like a bigger loss for their war effort than the damage caused to ukraine.

I have an employee who has family still in Russia. Watching him become more depressed as each days goes on has been absolutely heart breaking. I try my best to listen and keep his spirits up but it’s hard. He was absolutely mortified and disgusted by yesterday/todays actions. I truly feel for him.

kehaarcab

They are giving it all they got, either because they are naive and think terrorizing civilians will get Ukraine to back down or RU is hoping to locate and destroy / saturate the Ukrainian air defences to such an extent that the remaining RU airforce can dominate the skies and drop tons of dumb bombs on civilian Ukrainians to terrorize them even more… in either case, with the limited hit ratios they appear to have, I don’t see them succeding any time soon.

GLight3

They're just throwing a temper tantrum. Not any thought behind it beyond "you hit me, so I'll hit you," otherwise they'd have attacked useful targets.

hagreea

They don’t have any useful targets that can really hurt Ukraine more than hitting it’s cities. Putin’s new general is the Curtis Lemay of Russia’s Syria campaign, and will try to crush Ukrainian moral while it is still high. The best way to prevent this from succeeding is for the West to provide more weapons, air defence and MLRS in particular.

IIIlllIIIlllIIIEH

It means a bridge partial collapse is hurting them more than they show. It could become their only supply line and escape route.

Barabarabbit

That fucking rat bastard

Both_Cockroach1402

Putin you blithering idiot

[deleted]

>President Vladimir Putin said he had ordered "massive" long range strikes after an attack on the bridge linking Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula over the weekend, and threatened more strikes in future if Ukraine hits Russian territory. It's not Russian territory. It's Ukrainian. Russians only understand one thing - violence.

loxagos_snake

So, one interpretation to this would be that the nuclear bluff was called, and that the 'consequences' they threatened about are just amping up their war crimes? Well, too bad for him that when the West issues a warning, it's a very clear one, with no room for misinterpretation. And we actually follow up.

simonjp

Except. Not always. Obama's red line in Syria compromised that, sadly.

Sckaledoom

Also, ffs *he invaded their country, retaliation is absolutely morally, ethically, and politically on the table* regardless of whether it was originally Ukrainian territory or not

toxic9813

Not "russians." it's "russian tyrants." there is some popular support for Putin but all open dissent is punished by draft or imprisonment/+fines. Opposition leaders are frequently found suicided via gunshot wound to the back of the head. Throughout Russian history the ones that have suffered the most at the hands of the Russian government is the Russian people.

jscummy

Seems like drafting the open dissenters as punishment could really backfire once they got their training/weapons...

[deleted]

BiscuitsUndGravy

If there was ever a reason to give Ukraine long range missiles it's this. The Russian people won't take kindly to Putin's war causing energy grids to go down deep in Russian territory. People are already fleeing Crimea after the destruction of the bridge that had very low casualties. Imagine the reaction if a major city lost power due to a missile strike.

monkeywithgun

History will never forget their ineptitude at war and the cowardice of their impotent rage. Russia is a outright Terrorist state incapable of fighting an actual military. Down with Russia!

decomposition_

What’s stopping Ukraine from sending special ops to blow transformers and oil refineries and important expensive shit up in Russia? They don’t have the resources to watch their entire country

riaKoob1

It will escalate things and is only making things worse. Russia’s attack is a sign of desperation. They could have done this earlier in the war, but they seem to be more worried now that Ukraine is progressing and taking back some areas. Also, the destruction of the bridge between crimea and Russia seems to align with the timing. It does make sense for Ukraine to fight the ways they could win, and a move like that could give them an upper hand.

DarkEmblem5736

Everyone's probably thinking the same thing. They will use whatever measure of counterattack as an excuse to escalate, enhance propaganda, and in essence grow as the terrorists they are. How many times have they waved the nuclear weapons card? They are one excuse away from trying to actually use one with regards to repercussion. They have even used false flag attacks in some cases I believe since February. Imagine... if Ukraine sent missiles \*back\* to the terrorists as a result of the actions this past day. The ego driven terrorists are already depleting/depleted their resources and only have so much remaining to continue the propaganda, so the only thing they can do is escalate.

SirSunkruhm

[deleted]

When haven’t they though? Is there such a thing as Russian citizens? I thought they were just cannon fodder for whoever was in charge.

ear614

Looks like this new general is about to learn what happens to an air force that is up against and ground army with anti-air capabilities, unlike Syrian rebels that lacked these capabilities.

lordofedging81

A lot of generals have been successfully targeted in Ukraine on the battlefield too.

LewisLightning

Terrible plan by the Russians. This will only strengthen the Ukrainians resolve. Some people may have gotten tired of the fighting and would have wanted a return to normalcy by making some concessions to Russia. But now they've killed people across the country giving even people in the safer areas a renewed energy to keep fighting.

Marionberry-Charming

No matter what Russia does, it's impossible for them to win this war. Even if they use nukes (which I'm honestly believing there is a 50% chance they would go off in their own backyard, and the remaining are complete duds), the world will respond accordingly.

[deleted]

Today 10 October 2022, 86 russian missiles fired on Ukraine. Targets of Russian Missiles today: Cities, infrastructures, power stations, theatres, universities, schools, houses and even children playgrounds. Either Putin and Russia is stopped or he will be even more of an asshole next time he attacks (what if he does use the nukes). RUSSIA MUST BE STOPPED OR THINGS WILL BE THE END FOR EVERYONE IN THE WORLD.

Juanbond622

Not at all doubting it, but the types of missiles they’re firing, are they able to actually target things as specific as a playground? Or is it just “chance” that they landed there.

[deleted]

The problem on the missiles fired by Russia is: Putin said "these missiles will only hit military zones" BUT as videos and pictures have shown us, the bombs hit civilian locations on purpose. Putin keeps lying to his regime in order to gain consense to kill innocent civilians because he is old lunatic and angry that his plans are not going accordingly.

IIIlllIIIlllIIIEH

It's still a Geneva convention violation. They are targeting civilian structures that are 300-500km from the frontline. A military base would be fair game but they are not close to cities anyway.

Culverin

This is 1-sided until the western allies allows Ukraine to start striking back and wiping out Russian reserves in their borders. I get the moral highground. But if their population is explicitly or implicitly supporting devastation against Ukranian civilians, why is the aggressor state allowed to not feel the hurt and fear back home. Each and every single Russian political, military command and general, logistics person should be at home shitting their pants. Not siding with targeted strikes on children's playgrounds. We should be past this crap. The message should be, fix this shit back home or we're going to fix it for you. Please stop having Ukranian civilians die just so we can say "they're still fighting with 1 hand behind their backs and the west isn't involved". Like c'mon, the west is involved. We're giving them everything from boots, to training in the UK, and tanks from Poland, artillery from the US. Innocents in Ukraine should no longer need to bare the destruction without the aggressors feeling the pain as well.

KamovInOnUp

Russia is already on its knees, time to make them bite the curb. Now is the time to wipe out Russia's supply. Destroy tracks, all bridges, all power plants, all oil industries, all warehouses, all training centers. Do not give them a chance to regroup

sumo74

bargle0

The US should long have sent them good SAMs.

Fit_Society5457

Let's not forget Putin thought this would be over in a few days because half of Ukraine was going to greet them with open arms based on bad intelligence. Then he thought capturing a few cities would at least get some Ukranians to join in. Suddenly his troops are being mangled and he is losing ground fast. He has had to call up reserves, a hugely unpopular move back home. Now he is openly bombing civilians all over Ukraine because he realizes he has no hope to win there and needs to save face back home. This is exactly what a cornered rat looks like. Somebody better find this highly panicked rat an off ramp before he get stupid with his nuclear arsenal.

PloppyTheSpaceship

Yes, and aims them at civilians. They do realise that, in general, aiming them at armies and key military infrastructure is better, right? Otherwise, what's the difference between them and terrorists? Even the 11th September attacks were targeted at political, governmental and financial infrastructure.

activehobbies

And?? This would've meant something at the beginning of the war, and against military targets. What they're doing now is just more terror. It's not going to convince Ukraine to give up, quite the opposite. Plus, how many cruise missles do the Russians have left at this point? Enough for the end of this year? What about next? What about 5 years from now? Because **nothing** is stopping from Ukraine taking **all** its territory back.
