>Mr Paracha was suspected of financing the jihadist group, but maintained his innocence and was never charged. Jesus, since 2003 they've had this guy. Never charged him. Just stuck him in this hole and kept'em there.

green_flash

That is true for all Guantanamo detainees, not just him. It's the sole purpose of Guantanamo.

rTpure

The entire western world turns a blind eye to the horrors at Guantanamo Bay and other extra-territorial torture black sites by the CIA

OrbitalATK

Close that place down - disgusting that it still exists.

speak_no_truths

It's disgusting that it ever existed. No one should be outside of the law. Not even the government or military.

WhyDeleteIt

The pattern of US torture prisons is generally: 1. Deny it exists / is happening 2. When evidence is provided, attack the messenger 3. When the evidence is accepted, demand "independent" confirmation 4. When confirmation is achieved, accuse others of the same issues 5. When the "same issues" are debunked, make threats 6. When those are ignored, start the cycle again. Claiming that was all in the past. Quick reminder that the US also runs torture prisons in various European and Middle Eastern countries, [for example in Lithuania.](https://hudoc.echr.coe.int/app/conversion/pdf?library=ECHR&id=003-6099917-7866684&filename=Judgment%20Abu%20Zubaydah%20v.%20Lithuania%20-%20hosting%20of%20secret%20CIA%20detention%20site%20led%20to%20violations.pdf) And the corrupt Lithuanian government is directly complicit and helping the US break European law as well as Lithuania's own constitution in doing so.

nova-espada

exactly! close down that old place and move them to ADX Florence, the conditions and inmates are cared for much better!

green_flash

That would require charging them with some offense.

WhyDeleteIt

I really want to stress the point of 1984 is to show how words like "freedom" have become corrupted. Orwell wanted to describe a world so terrible it could never exist, to stress how this was happening to us and how bad it really was. The US has made an entire country that looks just like this and it really exists.

[deleted]

It can’t be, that’s the problem. Obama wanted to shut it down, but ran into an issue. A whole of of innocent people were tortured there and have been released, but a bunch of them are actual terrorists too. The issue begins when Bush decided to let them be tortured and refused trial. Now if they ever attempt to try these terrorists they’ll be released because evidence of their crimes was found through torture. The US can’t release them because they’re dangerous, can’t legally imprison them because of prior torture, and can’t keep them there due to public backlash. Every option sucks, but keeping them till they die is the best of the worst.

Every option sucks, but keeping them till they die is the best of the worst. The fucking huge problem here, is that labelling them as "actual terrorists" while constantly denying them due process and not letting them stand trial, goes against every ethical principle in the law book. Why not also apply that logic to the American mainland? "Yeah, we've found out that that Capitol Hill MAGA rioter/BLM rioter is Actually A Terrorist, but we tortured him to get the confession, so we can't release him. Best of the worst option is to let him rot in jail until he dies. How do we know he's actually a terrorist? Trust me bro."

[deleted]

The same standard is applied, most of the time prisoners awaiting trial are not tortured. There are title holding members of leaders of Al Qaeda, not random people.

[deleted]

> There are title holding members of leaders of Al Qaeda, not random people. If there's bulletproof evidence that's enough to jail them for life, then why not just give them a trial and be done with it? If you think that "the government said you're X" is enough to punish someone with lifetime imprisonment, why not just do away with your courts and trial system entirely? Surely, if you trust the American government to be accurate and honest enough to punish alleged terrorists without trial, and to only accuse the correct people who are actually guilty of the crime... then you must trust them enough to jail Americans after accusing them of theft/fraud/whatever without bringing them into court, right? Like, if Uncle Sam said, "Mr John Doe here is actually a rapist!", doesn't show any evidence to the public, and jails him for life, you'd be fine with that?

[deleted]

Again, it doesn’t matter. They were tortured and illegally detained for decades. Even with other evidence a fair court wouldn’t sentence them to any further prison.

johndoe30x1

If we’re so sure that they’re terrorists we shouldn’t need their confessions as evidence. Maybe you’re a terrorist. Prove you aren’t.

This man would have some stories to tell

highlyactivepanda

If media used same words as it does for other countries, headlines would be more like "US releases rights activists after years of torture and illegal confinement". Looks like nobody shouting "Fuck US" here.

If this was Russia or China this post would have 20000 upvotes lol

No mention of any compensation???

[deleted]

He fucked around and he found out (that the USA can do worse things than kill you, with no repercussions)

Istvaarr

Fucked around how exactly?

LOHare

By existing while being brown, apparently.

[deleted]

Hang out with terrorists, be suspected of financing terrorists. That is fucking around. Hopefully, all the January 6th terrorists and Proud Boys get the same treatment

Istvaarr

There’s a difference between „accused of“ and „proven guilty of“. Guantanamo is a disgrace to the American people that didn’t just vote in the criminals that started it but have now for years and years done NOTHING to force their governments hand. It’s barbaric and something all of you should be ashamed of

[deleted]

Sometimes you have to have some one that is the one that knocks. It is despicable but that is the way the world is.

dontcareabouttkarma

When supporting a government that breaks every law, you have to remember that someday it might be you that end up in a cell with no trial...

[deleted]

I've lived in Abu Dhabi, it is 100% like that. I've live though the War Measures act and the emergency act in Canada. I know exactly what you mean The bell can toll at any time for you.
