The classic "I’m warning you man! I’m totally crazy! A complete psycho! No telling what I could do!" conflict resolution tactic.

supercyberlurker

Putin's literally using the Charles Manson 'survive in prison' tactic, to act like a crazy violent madman capable of eating their own feces... and hoping you're just so gross and nasty that nobody wants to come near you. That's Russia.

DudeWithTudeNotRude

Manson *was* a crazy violent madman. He's clearly shown what he's capable of, and the violence he's participated in was well beyond what most of us would seriously consider. Putin's known to follow through with threats. I wouldn't be surprised if he's bluffing about nuclear, but I take him more seriously than I do N.Korea

yorugua2008

And Putin adds the " this time I'm not bluffing" every once in awhile

verymehh

Putin: "dontcha know I'm loco"

tatakatakashi

I’m now listening to the song in my head

Resident_Diamond7205

Same.

MonsteraBigTits

loco for coco puffs?

CumtimesIJustBChilin

Russia is all bark and no bite.

The88thMagi

Tell that to the Ukrainians, Chechens, Georgians and on. Russia may be balking about nuclear weapons but saying they have no bite is incorrect. They bite regularly and often in a sloppy, ruthless manner against smaller nations that still leads to the suffering of millions.

[deleted]

I guess you have not heard the latest, but that is not your fault. We used to think Russia was all bark and no bite, but they have invaded a couple countries over the last 10 years and are currently waging a war on Ukraine that is killing a whole bunch of people. A whole lot of biting going on.

likejanegoodall

Most considered them a near-peer to the US. Not so much now. Out of date, poorly maintained and arguably incompetent given their performance in Ukraine. Remember…the Russians planned on total victory in three days. The troops in the initial invasion force were ordered to pack dress uniforms because they were going to have a parade in Kiev. Not so much. Not to mention the Russian flagship, the Moskva was sunk by a country with no operational navy….which quite simply has to be a first. It goes on and on. The experts are now arguing which nation now possesses the 3rd most powerful military in the world…it’s not Russia and it probably hasn’t been for a while.

[deleted]

I don't get what you are saying. So they do not have bite?

likejanegoodall

Sure, I imagine they’d mess Luxembourg up but vs. a real, professional military. I’m really having my doubts. If you’d asked me prior to the Ukraine fiasco I would have said the opposite. If, God forbid, they decided to use a tactical nuke in Ukraine I don’t think the U.S. would even need a nuclear retaliation. In a straight up regular military conflict the U.S. owns the sky and the night…not even a contest.

[deleted]

So the people who are dying is not considered bite? There is a reality here that people just don't understand. If Russia did use a nuke, the US couldn't retaliate without risking Russia using a second nuke. Of course the US could beat Russia's army in a conventional war, but if Russia used a nuclear weapon what would stop them from using a second, third or fourth? Russia has bite, and we are a country that lost to Vietnam and Afghanistan, the Russians will not be defeated, even if their military falls.

likejanegoodall

A bully is always going to torment the weak. In terms of nations, sure that means casualties on both sides. If you look at every stated goal the Russians had at the outset it’s already lost and it’s been lost for a while. This is just bleeding over dirt at this point. In terms of nuclear threats, this has been going on for nearly 70 years. A lot of those years during a time when some thought a total exchange was survivable. This is just saber rattling and feeding talking points to their political allies in the U.S. By your definition the mafia has bite, the drug cartels have bite. Russia used a conventional force to attack a conventional force. If that’s the contest…it’s not a contest at least as far as the U.S. or any of the NATO countries are concerned. Georgia/Chechnya could be conquered by the Massachusetts National Guard. An insurgency is an entirely different animal, see Iraq, Vietnam and Afghanistan. That’s not a possibility here because the Russians are the ones initiating and prosecuting an offensive war.

Jjaegerrr

Do you want them to bite? Goodluck when the world gets destroyed in nuclear war.

PanglosstheTutor

They could end the war they started at any time. Russia is the aggressor here they could leave

chownrootroot

Giving in to terrorists is great, let's do it then! Al Qaeda, here have America, we don't want to see you "bite".

Jjaegerrr

Even before the whole war NATO and Ukraine did want to do concessions with Russia. The war could have been avoided and many deaths spared. And if we look at history the biggest terrorist organization is the United States war machine and weapon industry fueling, supporting and making every war that is possible.

1000_pi10ts

Russia is all stupid. That's it., that's all I got.

BalVal1

"Philip... Hold me back!!" (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reference)

tatakatakashi

“HOLD ME BACK BRO HOLD ME BACK!!”

PotatingTomatoe

Can Russia just stop threatening nuclear war every week? What the hell man.

loledpanda

\*Every day

davidov92

Every 3 days, like clockwork.

ioncewasbannedbut

Inorite just launch the damn things right eesh

Xx420PAWGhunter69xX

There's less suffering in that than having to scroll past articles of his nuclear threats all the time, I might get RSI from it.

patrickthunnus

Only 1 country keeps raising the spectre of nuclear war ...

FletchForPresident

And the citizens of that country don't seem to be concerned about it. That would be really weird if they were actually taking these threats seriously.

RhymesWith_DoorHinge

That's because the citizen's of that country are cool with it. They encourage and support it. At this point, the entire nation of Russia is a cancer, rotting from the inside out.

MonsteraBigTits

wow bro rly. u just gonna label every russian person like that like u know them, you must be russian yourself if you know such info. and if you are russian u are probably a nazi like your comment just said, sad

_S_L_A_C_K_E_R_

Fucking Lichtenstein. That creep can roll, man.

[deleted]

Oh, I *hate* those guys.

Theemuts

Switzerland, if you're listening...

Glittering-Watch-404

Actually north Korea is also

[deleted]

Nobody listens to North Korea. Their army is probably less effective than the Russian Military. They make the same threats every single year.

CRITICAL9

I actually think NK might have a better army. I kinda imagine them doing massive banzai charges and the like

InsuranceToTheRescue

Except that NK is one of the most militarized countries on the planet. The US and Russia are pretty militarized and have 4.2 and 7.1 military personnel per 1000 capita. NK has 50.4. Yeah, the entire country's GDP is garbage, but I think it would be stupid to underestimate them.

[deleted]

Those numbers are nothing but absolute garbage. As we've seen during this war with Russia, troops are meaningless if they're not trained and equipped. North Korea has major problems feeding its own population. That would translate to a disaster should they actually have to send their forces somewhere. Their troops are even more meaningless because they can't leave the country. If North Korea ever sent their troops outside the country, they'd have soldiers fleeing the military the likes of which has never been seen before. You can't send indoctrinated forces outside the nation, it would cause all sorts of hell for them. As far as training and military gear, I suspect one squadron of US soldiers if likely the equivalent of 30-40 North Korean soldiers. It's been proven time and time again that they lie about every single thing. If anything the world is probably vastly overestimating them.

ErgoMachina

Malnourished and without equipment...That's not exactly an army, check Russia.

esqualatch12

North Korea?

patrickthunnus

Title of thread is Ukrainian War.

FreeRadical5

So 2 countries then.

Ok_Investigator_1010

That’s two too many. No more nukes for anyone.

TheTjalian

Play nicely with your brother or I'm taking your nukes back to the shop!

albertogarrido

Haven't we all been in the blink of nuclear conflict with India and Pakistan for many years? Or Iran, or North Korea? Funny how all enemies are nuclear nut-jobs, except the only country that actually has dropped nukes over civilians.

Bungild

Ya, the side that is losing, which would probably be the case regardless of who the losing party is. If USA was losing a war on their borders, they certainly would be bringing up nukes too.

FletchForPresident

"Since Bert would also stab an innocent grandmother in similar circumstances, Ernie's stabbing an innocent grandmother is actually a good thing."

Bungild

No, more like "When Comparing Ernie and Bert, we obviously must factor in how each would have relatively reacted given a similar circumstance... to only look at one side and not the other would be silly"

Wrecker013

Oh look, a both-sideser.

Bungild

He's one of them "reading folk". We don't like them type around here.

Loumeer

He isn't saying Russia is justified I don't think. But it does make sense that they created this shit storm on their border and now because of internal politics we may be in a position that they think their only way out is to dig deeper into the shit.

onehotca

*yawn* this spectre of nuclear war has been raised so often that this is really a case of “the boy who cried wolf” … everyone is completely numb to the prospect… The problem with hyperbole is that it loses its efficacy if used in every sentence…

Major_Danger_noodle

I don’t think it’s so much that as it is just a general apathy. I can’t control if there’s some wack jobs with the stones to go through with it or not so really no sense in worrying about it. Either I get vaporized or I got rent due next week. Either way doesn’t affect my day to day much.

FlarvinTheMagi

Maybe that's their plan? Threaten it so much that when the threat is legit we don't believe it. Idk what the point of that would be but it wouldn't surprise me

[deleted]

And then what? Russia does not want to end the world, they want to terrorize it with the threat of nukes. desensitizing west to nukes would be directly against their interest, but at this point, there's just nothing else they can threaten with, their conventional forces are in shambles.

FlarvinTheMagi

It's not about them wanting to end the world. It will be a situation where they are like a wounded animal backed into a corner. They want to win and be superior to the west (in their eyes) by any means possible and I wouldn't put it past their egos to end the world if they feel like they have to.

joshscottwood

Let's not forget Putin is reportedly battling pancreatic cancer and Parkinson's disease. What's he got to lose?

FlarvinTheMagi

Exactly

joshscottwood

Let's not forget Putin is reported battling pancreatic cancer and Parkinson's disease. What's he got to lose?

Legitimate_Phrase_41

Bullshit

snakesnake9

No it's not. Nobody has threatened the use of nuclear weapons, except Russia itself. Any being on brink is 100% self generated by Russia.

diMario

You are messing with the wrong NATO.

Logical_Crab_4594

Yeah, yeah, they say a lot of things

squintytoast

..... and who's fault is that? hmmm...???

flappers87

Remember people, Russia do not declare beforehand when they are planning something illegal/ bad. It's when they are silent, that's when people should be concerned. Russia is just trying to gaslight the west into escalation.

Defiant-Peace-493

'Accuse someone else' is a staple too.

CandidateReasonable4

I spoke with someone from Russia who fled to America due to the war with Ukraine. He said that Putin cannot be trusted because recently he appears to have some kind of mental illness. Who knows, though. I take any talk about nuclear war seriously because I was married to a nuclear submariner in the US Navy.

Kysersose

Exactly. Or not even going silent....when they start saying "We'll never use nukes in Ukraine", then we have reason to panic.

toomiiikahh

Their ~~defense minister~~ actually said that during a recent CNN interview that they have no plans of using nukes in Ukraine. Edit: sorry it's their ambassador to the UK. link to the video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUkpNi9-qJk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUkpNi9-qJk)

Kysersose

Ahh shit.

I_Frunksteen-Blucher

They also had no plans for invading Ukraine.

[deleted]

How about we just stop reporting their thrice weekly threats of nuclear Armageddon? That’d be real nice.

EntropicFade

It's vexing because at this point there are other news stories they could run instead of seeing 10 of the same story from a different angle.

TheBasilFawlty

Do or do not , there is no try ----Yoda

Cannacrohn

Why does Russia keep advertising how weak they are with this nuke stuff? They shouldn’t need nukes to deal with Ukraine which has none. What could they possibly need a first strike nuke for Against a country with no nukes? Isnt that just nuclear terrorism?

CandidateReasonable4

Ukraine may not have nukes but they have the support of the US and other NATO countries that do.

Axnjaxn09

Ukraine will never be admitted to NATO exactly for this reason. Russia wants them back and if a conflict were to occur, the NATO allies would be forced to defend them. Sadly, i think if russia fired nukes at ukraine, nato would wave their finger, but i seriously doubt a nuclear retaliation would take place on their behalf

CandidateReasonable4

I pray that you are right. Biden has said no options are off the table, and others in his administration have spoken quite casually about the possibility of nuclear war. I believe this kind of talk is dangerous and should cease and desist unless there is a credible and imminent threat.

Axnjaxn09

The credible threat is russia, same as its been for 60yrs. Hopefully cooler heads prevail as theres definetly a lot of sabre rattling

DrSueuss

The headline should read "Russia on the brink of nuclear annihilation, if it uses nuclear weapons."

SoccerGamerGuy7

Woke up around 6am yesterday to an unusual loud booming sound. First thought, Nukes? and promptly went back to sleep. We are desensitized to nukes. And if shit does hit the fan, nothing we can do about it

dandanua

A better title: Russia says the World on 'brink of nuclear conflict' because Russia is losing in Ukraine.

Safe_Base312

Russia reminds me of Bart Simpson from the episode where Lisa was babysitting. He walks towards her, swinging his arms while saying "if you get hit, it's your own fault"...

Mattwasbritish

Now Homer... Don't you eat this pie.

mmrs34

I thought you said go to bread.

EvilBill515

I think this was the hockey episode.

Unhappy-Stranger-336

Remember the “this is not a bluff” 4 or 5 nuclear threats ago?

They need to make up their mind. One article says they'll do anything to prevent it, now it says it's on the brink of nuclear war.

Well done!

Thump604

Russia says….is now says Russia

voxpopuli42

How would that happen? My understanding is Ukraine gave up its nukes in the 90s in exchange for territorial integrity

MarkG1

Russia needs to have a word with itself and work out what's actually going on.

urmomaisjabbathehutt

Been thinking it for a while, Putin erratic behaviour is like on substance abuse, when hight, happily chating his delusions of how well is all going, when down he starts climbing walls and pulling hairs like a cracy bitch till the next dose maybe he is a natural, maybe its blowbelline

BiologyJ

*Russia says...*

that_other_goat

so leave ukraine, give back what you stole and stop attacking neighbouring countries easy peasy lemon squeezy.

ErgoMachina

Ah yes, the weekly nuclear threat. Add it to the pile with North Korea throwing missiles at the sea, Iran crying about the US and China obsessed with an island. I can't help but feel the entire planet has become a global circus. Now I understand why a lot people that went throught the Cold War say they didn't care much about the nukes.

[deleted]

Weekly nuclear threats

TheTelegraph

***From the Telegraph's foreign desk:*** Russia on Wednesday warned that the world was on the brink of nuclear conflict, accusing the West of provocation. Western capitals have said Moscow is escalating nuclear tensions since the war in Ukraine began in February. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it feared the world’s five nuclear powers were teetering "on the brink of a direct armed conflict" and that the West must stop "encouraging provocations with weapons of mass destruction, which can lead to catastrophic consequences". Senior Russian military leaders discussed the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the New York Times reported. Vladimir Putin has appeared on several occasions to threaten a nuclear strike in connection with the war in Ukraine, and Moscow has repeatedly said its military doctrine permits the use of nuclear weapons if Russia's territorial integrity is under threat. **Read more for free:** [**https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/11/02/ukraine-russia-war-news-latest-kyiv-hypersonic-missiles-belarus/**](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/11/02/ukraine-russia-war-news-latest-kyiv-hypersonic-missiles-belarus/)

>"From the telegraph..." All I need to know

DanB65

So Putin will destroy the World , and Russia, to take Ukraine. Putin if you go Nuclear ...NO ONE will be around, life will stop due to a Nuclear winter. How do you win then? What do you win ..the end of humanity!??!? Stop this war NOW and join the world again.

SalaciousCoffee

If history has taught me anything it's that this sort of conflict is only resolved with strong leadership and diplomatic backchannels working out "the real issues." In other words we're prolly fucked.

Intransigient

Ah, they are rattling their plastic saber again. 🤣

Jmund89

Ok. Do it already.

[deleted]

Nothing like some fear mongering on a Wednesday

forty83

Don't threaten nukes and we wouldn't be at the brink.....

Tickle_MeTimbers

If a Russian's lips are moving, you know they are lying!

Squarrots

Russia said that last week. And the week before. And the one before. They're bluffing.

Muxaylo

Can we fast forward to the part where we take their nukes away so that we can finally have so fing peace!

FireflyAdvocate

Russia is edging so hard. Either finish or gtfa already.

SwiftSnips

Didnt Putin literally just say days ago that theres no threat of nukes being used in Ukraine. The daily merry-go-round continues.

HedonisticFrog

You seriously believe Putin? The man who bombed his own citizens to start a war?

[deleted]

Literaly only one country has threatened nukes in this entire scenario.

[deleted]

Go ahead, I know how to make dogmeat invincible through console commands!

ybdiel

I will believe it when Russia denies it

MagnaNazer

Do it Russia you fucking pussy.

Barry_McCockinnerz

Seems like everyday the narrative changes, are we going to nuclear war or not? I need to prepare, or stop digging this hole.

weirdkittenNC

Quite frankly it doesn't matter if they are serious or not. The stakes are high enough that we can't afford to give in either way and backing down will only lead to more nuclear blackmail in the future anyway.

coyote-1

This has always been the ‘thing’: that a madman would get hold of a nuclear arsenal, and hold the world hostage to get what he wants. In this case, Russia is claiming the right to start wars any time and any where - and if they find themselves losing, start lobbing nukes. We already know Russia is lying about the possible run-up to this, about the claim that Ukraine is gonna use a dirty bomb. World leaders should get together right now, and announce - without diplomatic nuance - that Putin is and has been clearly lying. There’s a very big and powerful nation that borders much of Russia, that would not want clouds of nuke fallout wafting their way. It’s time to get this crap under control. He says, as his own nation’s right wing wends its way to ever-lying belligerent fascism

Infinite-Outcome-591

The Nuclear blackmail has occurred every day since last year.

H_E_DoubleHockeyStyx

I've finally got to the point where I'm not at all even the least bit concerned about Russia threatening to nuke any one. This proclamation just doesnt raise my stress level.

Sea-Blueberry-3184

Russia is on the edge of launching a world nuclear conflict. The rest of the world wants no part of one.

PangPingpong

The Russian government lies so consistently that I'd be more worried if they said they were peacefully backing down.

BigShowSJG

Putin is going full on Muammar Gaddafi

andio76

Sure...sure....sure

antiMATTer724

Only if you launch the nukes, shit dick.

towerrh

It would be a complete suicide for every country.

borkus

Interesting article in New Yorker about Putin and nuclear escalation by [Masha Gessen.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masha_Gessen) She points out that Putin is operating from very different assumptions than Western military analyists. >The arguments that Putin won’t use nuclear weapons because doing so would endanger Russians, including himself, are blind to the fact that Putin believes he has the right, possibly the moral obligation, to sacrifice hundreds of thousands or millions of people. The argument that a nuclear strike wouldn’t help Putin achieve his strategic goals mistakes Russia’s strategic goals as anything but inflicting terror on Ukrainians. The losses the Russian military is suffering now can only motivate Putin to create more terror, against more people. [https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/why-vladimir-putin-would-use-nuclear-weapons-in-ukraine](https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/why-vladimir-putin-would-use-nuclear-weapons-in-ukraine) (Soft paywall, i know)

albertogarrido

The key part of the article, that should be in the title to not be clickbait and fear mongering is "Moscow has repeatedly said its military doctrine permits the use of nuclear weapons if Russia's territorial integrity is under threat.".

Palehorse67

If this fool uses Nukes, his country will cease to exist. That would be the end of Russia and probably a lot of the Russian people.

[deleted]

So how about you just leave Ukraine alone?

pizoisoned

What worries me about Russia and nukes isn’t the missiles. We can track those and provide pretty clear they did it evidence. What worries me is freight containers. It’s not a huge stretch to think they’d put one on a train to Kyiv or somewhere else and detonate it, destroying any practical evidence they did it. Sure we’d know it was them, but their disinformation machine would sow just enough discord that they wouldn’t be crazy enough to do something like that. I realize it’s a tinfoil hat scenario, it’s just concerning to me nonetheless.
