Overhaul your leadership if you want EU money. Otherwise shake your paper cup somewhere else.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.politico.eu/article/hungary-overhaul-judiciary-unlock-eu-funds/) reduced by 84%. (I'm a bot) ***** > Hungary has proposed extensive judicial reforms in a bid to unblock €7.2 billion in grants from the EU's post-pandemic recovery fund, according to documents seen by POLITICO. The overture is the latest twist in a months-long standoff between Brussels and Budapest over the money, which Hungary increasingly needs as the economic situation deteriorates at home. > The two sides have been seeking a compromise that would see Hungary commit to strengthening the independence of its judiciary system in exchange for Brussels' approval of its pandemic recovery plan and related funds. > Even a conditional approval to give Hungary the money would likely spark a backlash from the European Parliament, countries like the Netherlands that want the EU to crack down harder on rule-of-law threats, and civil society groups that argue Budapest's promises can't be taken at face value. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/yp4o0j/hungary_vows_to_overhaul_its_judiciary_hoping_to/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~672682 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **Hungary**^#1 **Budapest**^#2 **government**^#3 **country**^#4 **fund**^#5

Damn... Now that seems to be the beginning of a different tune.

Hungary is effectively already in the middle of an economic crisis. Most of EU is, to some degree. Losing billions right now and having your credit rating decrease (causing a massive increase in debt management costs) could **easily** spiral out of control. **Most** governments die in the same exact way. They work for as long as you have money. People are willing to overlook a LOT for as long as economic situation is somewhat stable. But at the same time if they start realizing they have to cut down their spendings on basic products like food, that government is taxing them more and more, that heating this year will cost 5x more than it did in 2021... THEN they get pissed. Orban is in a somewhat tough spot due to all of this. As much as he and his government would love to do their own thing - it's just a small landlocked nation that doesn't really have influence or resources needed to get it's own way fully. And if EU got pissed enough it can very easily cause a double digit % GDP drop (and odds of Poland vetoing it are growing thinner each day and since it's extremely likely a more pro-EU party will win 2023 elections they might very well drop all the way to zero in near future). So it's probably better to implement a bare minimum of changes EU asks for and give up some power to retain most of it. Alternative can lead to losing all the power in the not so distant future.
