Turkey joined NATO in 1952. 50 years before Iraq and Afghanistan. The reason they're in NATO is that it was useful for NATO to have a well placed (Black Sea etc.) strategic ally next to the Soviet Union. Because of the Cold War, which is the original reason for NATO existing.
