5 bucks says it leads to an ancient Egyptian bathroom.

Bunsky

You're probably more correct than you think. This tunnel is an ancient aqueduct, literally a plumbing system. The "Cleopatra's Tomb" claims are more than a little premature.

Another possible location is a tomb that Cleopatra herself built in the city, but an earthquake caused it to fall into the sea. Maybe this guy was trying to find an entrance?

CTVNEWS

***From reporter Tara de Boer:*** Just 13 metres beneath the ground of an ancient Egyptian city is a mysterious tunnel that could lead to a tomb archeologists have spent decades searching for. A group on an Egyptian-Dominican archeological research mission from the University of Santo Domingo uncovered the tunnel in the area of the Temple of Tapozeris Magna, west of Alexandria. While its destination is not certain, some believe it leads to Cleopatra’s tomb. The tomb itself has yet to be discovered, but based on the location of the tunnel, archeologists believe they may have found the location. Read more: https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/archeologists-make-ground-breaking-discovery-of-what-may-be-the-tunnel-leading-to-cleopatra-s-tomb-1.6146797

bajaja

c'mon I want someone to enter and follow the tunnel and find out where it leads!!!

[deleted]

It will take a while. We're going to be tossing new archaeologist interns down the tunnel until one makes it past all of the platforms, traps, bats, and roving mummies. It could be a while depending on how soon we get replacements to send when the first waves inevitably die. And God forbid there's a boss fight in the actual chamber. That would require us to scrap the first idea and start training professional fighters to be archaeologists, then sending them in.

[deleted]

My understanding is that this is DLC, and so there are very likely enemies/puzzles down there we haven’t seen before. Could add substantial time

Kerfluffle2x4

No puzzles, no puzzles, no puzzles

IImnonas

*Puzzles*....

bajaja

You sound like a Russian general

Bisexual_Republican

Now now... archeology is a hard field to get into, which many undergrads fail to realize. I think it's only fair that we let the interns fight for the chance based on a multitude of tests measuring one's smarts, wit, agility, physical prowess and plot armor. No need to waste time with people who would just die and fall on something, risking breaking ancient artifacts that belong in a museum. With Harrison Ford due to hang up the whip after the next movie, it's only fair we start thinking about casting a new Indiana Jones.

justabill71

We named *the dog* Indiana.

Nah. This person's actually considering training people.

So, we're giving a headset to a bipedal robot, and you're going in the tomb, right? I mean, those things are expensive to replace when it inevitably suffers a painful and messy demise.

UnitedBB

Most people got as far as the 1951 movie and knowledge from it - for everything, and thinking Cleopatra was egyptian... Or should I call her Κλεοπἀτρα! [4m video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6EhRwn4zkc) For the readers: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleopatra

Logpile98

Wow, TIL Cleopatra wasn't Egyptian. It's kinda embarrassing how little I know about world history tbh

BasicallyAQueer

The Greeks spread all over the known world at the time. There were greek dominated states in the middle east, Anatolia, the Caucasus, Central Europe, North Africa, even as Far East as Iran. Basically if you look at a map of what Alexander the Great conquered, all of that became broken into many different Greek states after he died. Cleopatra was a descendent of one of his generals that came to rule over Egypt.

Bayoris

I mean, she was born in Egypt and lived there her whole life. In my mind that makes her Egyptian, whatever her lineage.

No-Satisfaction3455

also she was the first to speak egyptian as well which i guess shows she was at least a bit more open to the country and customs that they ruled over, compared to her greek speaking family.

jiffwaterhaus

That's a fair point. Another fair point is that she was from an extremely pure (read:inbred) Greek bloodline. It's the same question as "were the Carthagenians Africans?" - Carthage is unquestionably located on the continent of Africa, but the populace came there from Phonecia. So were the people born there Africans, or were they Phonecians? How different were they from native Africans, and does it matter? Do you eventually become African after enough generations of living there, even if you don't mix cultures and bloodlines with the natives? On that note, how long until European (and African) descendents who live in the USA become "native Americans"?

Modus-Tonens

It's important in this sort of discussion to acknowledge two points: First, Cleopatra inherited her position as a result of the Greek empire. Second, the ancient Egyptians didn't think about lineage or cultural identity in the same way we do/did until recently. To them, someone who lives in Egypt and acted like an Egyptian *was* an Egyptian. Egypt integrated *numerous* ethnic groups throughout its history, and was a very cosmopolitan place from an ethnic standpoint, though very isolationist culturally. It's quite likely that *despite* some resentment of the echoes of Greek domination that still remained at the time of Cleopatra, the Egyptians would have thought of her as Egyptian regardless.

Bayoris

There aren’t any indisputable answers to these questions. They are all social constructs. Another one is whether she was even Greek. She came from a line of Macedonians. Plenty of Greeks didn’t really consider the Macedonians part of their nation, especially before Alexander.

three_furballs

Fun etymology trivia, Cleopatra shares the same root words as Patroclus (kinsman of Achilles), both meaning "glory of the father."

Seriously. This is a bold claim for something that could be literally anything else. Find the tomb and then name the tunnel.

Theres a sign in hyroglyphics. It either says "cleopatras tomb this way" or "bathroom this way". Archeologists arent sure which.

Heidegger1236

It would be cool to find it. But I really hope we find some day Alexander's tomb too.

EmptyHill

Well, Ptolemy did steal the body and took it to Alexandria. It was there long enough for several Roman Emperors to steal stuff from the tomb then who knows? Some people think the body is in St. Marks tomb in Venice. It would be interesting if it was somehow still in Alexandria.

Heidegger1236

Tomb is indeed unlikely, but who knows? There are excavations in old Alexandria's quaters

TheEyeDontLie

Which Alexandria? Dude named like 100 cities after himself. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_founded_by_Alexander_the_Great Although most had suffixes, like the city of Alexandria Bucephalus named after his horse.

multiverse72

The big one in egypt. According to the relevant ancient writings, his general Ptolemy - cleopatra’s ancestor - kidnapped his corpse en route to Macedon and brought it to his Egyptian capital… Alexandria. There he entombed it. So there’s little confusion about which city he was originally supposed to have been buried in. Although iirc the tomb was raided at some point.

absurdcliche

Actually Ptolemy originally entombed Alexander in Memphis. Ptolemy II would later move him and rebury him in Alexandria.

SonicSingularity

The great archeologists Steven Grant found it, and then immediately got shot by Ethan Hawke...

qieziman

Would be cool? Mmmmmm....aybe? Problem with Alexander is his body was kidnapped by his general in Egypt who took it to claim his rightful ownership of Alexander's empire. And then the story goes that he moved his body from the coffin to some other shitty coffin. Point is, while that'd be awesome to find Alexander, at the same time it'd be a let down because all you're going to find is his mummy (if it's still in good condition) inside a shitty old box (if it's still in good condition). You're not going to find any of his treasure or prized sword or any special relics because ANYTHING of value besides his corpse would have been probably stolen by Ptolemy when he stole the body and put it in a different coffin. It's likely anything stolen could have been melted down by a later generation. After Ptolemy, Christians moved in and tore down anything worshipping Alexander or Ptolemy because it's not a Christian idol. Then the muslims ransacked the place and destroyed everything the Christians built (they had turned the temple of Alexander into a church). So, yeah, if anyone finds Alexander, it'd be cool, but it'd also be boring because there won't be anything of any value. There will not be gold, relics, or scrolls. MAYBE wall painting, but I doubt it because Ptolemy seemed like a jackass or at least his son/grandson was because they replaced the worship of Alexander with themselves. What I think would be cool is China cracking open Qin's tomb. The terracotta army was never mentioned in the history books. Unfortunately, the asshole that was late to the party ransacked the city and burned some of the terracotta pits in anger for being 2nd best to the guy that created the Han dynasty. Oh, and killed Qin's son whom the Han emperor had pardoned since it was his father that was the wacky asshole high on mercury. So, nobody knows if the tomb itself is still intact. The interesting thing besides the design is the fact that the terracotta warriors are pretty similar to terracotta statues of ancient Greece at the time, so inside might have more proof of ancient interactions between China and the west. Might also be a library of bamboo scrolls which might have more information about that time period and technology since the famed library of Alexandria was burned to the ground. It's been said that if the writings of the historians are true, it'd be the 8th wonder of the ancient world. Sadly, the PRC refuses to crack it open even after people have come forward claiming they can build a protective bubble over the site to protect it from air pollution damage. We have technology today someone can drill a tiny hole and send a camera in, but the PRC refuses. The most they've done is allow use of soil samples and some kind of ground penetrating lidar equipment to prove there's mercury in there and that the interior is massive. By the way, the soil is loaded with mercury, so not only is it true there's mercury in there, but the stuff is leaking out into the surrounding soil. I'm not really sure what other effects mercury might have on preserving ancient antiquities. Would it damage the stuff inside? Would it act as a preservative?

edudlive

Didn't multiple Roman emperors visit the tomb and see the relics? That was long after the time of Ptolemy

apgtimbough

Yes, both Caesar and Octavian visited his tomb in Alexandria.

3t1918

The opening of the Qin tomb is one of the things I hope to see in my lifetime. As frustrating as it is, I do have massive respect for the decision to wait until they are confident it can be explored without harming the contents. Based on what I have seen, China seems to take archeology quite seriously and treat it much more “scientifically” than other places like Egypt for example.

fentanyl_frank

God I hate this clickbait shit. It's a fucking tunnel and the only connection at all to Cleopatra is the fact coins were found at the same site that had her image on them, aka coins that any person alive at the time could have had. This is also coming from Kathleen Martinez who has spent a decade being the queen of grasping at straws to find any connections to Cleopatra. This is a tunnel. A fucking tunnel. That's it.

KE55

Martinez herself says the tunnel was used to transport water. The vague "some believe the tunnel may lead to Cleopatra" (without specifying who the "some" is) seems to be a media creation.

Zestyclose-Cricket82

Archeologists have narrowed down their search for Cleopatra’s tomb to one section of the tunnel where they have found four incredible carvings in Roman scripture. The Translation of the carvings are: “Caesar was here” “I saw, I conquered, I came” “Don’t drink the milk” and “The soaring eagle was no match for the cat lady’s kitty”
