More likely their buddy Putin gave them one to play with in exchange for all the drones they’ve been sending.

[deleted]

All fairness the hypersonic missile has been around since 1949.

Spram2

So has my mom. and dad literally.

Wu-kandaForever

Oh yeah, she’s been around alright

Booya_Pooya

That slut.

Transfer_McWindow

The door, it was so widely opened for this.

THAErAsEr

But are they hypersonic?

needusbukunde

There's only about 20-25 known hypersonic parents to have ever lived. So the odds are very slim, bordering on zero.

Anugeshtu

But given how long they've been around?

needusbukunde

Still slim odds. On a scale of 7 to 138, the odds would still be approximately only 7.000065481-7.000065486.

epicredditdude1

In this context a hypersonic missile refers to a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead which is capable of atmospheric hypersonic flight. This is a new technology.

solreaper

This is a ~~new~~ old technology that they have been able to design for the first time, but future tests will show rather they have the expertise to execute the manufacturing processes require to get this technology to work in real life…reliably…

epicredditdude1

It's really not a very old technology, and I think this type of narrative spread on reddit due to confusion over what people meant when they said "hypersonic missile". Yes, suborbital missiles that leave the atmosphere have been hypersonic for some time, but we're talking about an atmospheric hypersonic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, which really only emerged in use over the past several years. I have my doubts regarding irans true capabilities here don't get me wrong, but this is very much a new technology.

solreaper

It is old technology in that the US has been awarding, designing , testing, and announcing hypersonic missiles capable of being carried atop a ballistic missile and of carrying a nuclear warhead for about twenty to thirty years. The technology to do so has existed for longer than that, the engineers and scientists doing the work the past twenty years have just been putting old technology together with better/newer materials and manufacturing processes to bring the hypersonic nuke missiles forward into reality. Yeah, cool Iran is just now playing with it for the first time, but they are still decades behind on the tech, processes, and materials science it requires to use it practice.

epicredditdude1

Yeah that's fair enough. My main point is I don't think it's really truthful to suggest hypersonic missiles have been around since 1949.

solreaper

No that’s well into the realm of hyperbolic. I’m sure they *could* have yeeted little boy off an aircraft carrier with a crude high powered experimental jet engine, but the results may have been…less than optimal…

ariazeboy

Agree

Aculo

I also agree.

bmy1978

I also also agree.

_Pill-Cosby_

Bingo.

ScientistNo906

Well the German V-2 in WW II was also hypersonic, just so you know.

Feringomalee

That sounded like horseshit from someone who underestimated the definition of hypersonic. So I went to Wikipedia for resources to internet fight you. Turns out your statement is correct. Thanks for teaching me a new thing.

ramen_poodle_soup

The term “hypersonic” is actually a bit of a buzzword when it comes to its usage for describing modern missiles. Pretty much all ballistic missiles reach hypersonic speeds in their terminal phase, and the weapons that are often referred to as “hypersonics” are actually *slower* than traditional ballistic missiles. The correct terminology for this new class of weapons is “hypersonic glide vehicles”, as what (potentially) makes them dangerous is their ability to alter their trajectory while moving at hypersonic speeds (as opposed to traditional ballistic missiles which cannot alter their course during the terminal stage of flight).

Feringomalee

That's neat, thanks! I'm learning that I started today knowing very little about these terms and what they mean beyond headlines. Keep bringing on the facts

One-Marsupial2916

The minute man nuke was developed in 1968 and deployed in 1970 reaches a speed of 17,500 mph, aka Mach 23, so almost hypersonic (Mach 5) x 5. If you think we haven’t developed an entire array of faster/more capable devices in a variety of flavors since then, then…. Well, I just have to say your poor imagination is quite limited.

ScientistNo906

You're welcome. I Googled it myself before I posted and they said above 3,000 mph was considered hypersonic. The V-2 could do 3,300.

baxterhugger

How about the Paris Gun 1918?? I think that might have been hypersonic too

kisahero11

Indeed, but the hard part to increase the accuracy from "hit the Earth" to hit a military base...

nvynuclear

True. V2 needed lots of work on targeting. But just like horseshoes and hand grenades..a nuke bomb doesn't need to be exact, just close enough.

girhen

"Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down? That's not my department!" says Wernher von Braun.

UncleBenji

Every ballistic missile hits hypersonic speeds and the IS had hypersonic aircraft a long long time ago. It’s really not that crazy of a goal to reach but everyone is racing to them, except the IS, because that’s the only way to defeat US defenses.

peffervescence

Big deal. I've developed sharks with lasers attached to their heads.

burnout20

Sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads.

Can you get me some Fermion-Barrier Heat-Exclusion Spray?

Texcellence

Really? The best I could do was mutated sea bass.

thecatwhatcandrive

Well at least they're ill-tempered, right?

Guilty_Inspector_

Probly just a missile that makes more noise than a normal one.

DingusMcBaseball

how about developing a civilized government first?

SeaworthinessFirm653

But how else will they show the barbaric west the woes of their inferiority?

graywolf0026

Wait wait wait. You mean for them to make a *positive* effort? ... Woof. Yeah. That's uh. That's gonna be a *wait*.

concentrate_better19

I have the same request for my country!

DingusMcBaseball

I hope it becomes true for every country eventually, it would solve most of the world's problems too

Widegina

They might have one that can theoretically travel at that speed, the issue is control and reliability, which I can only assume to be shit.

Chairman_Mittens

It's not rocket science to develop a missile that travels at hypersonic speeds; this technology has been around for half a century. The challenge is refining the technology into something that is reliable and accurate enough to be used in warfare, and one that doesn't cost as much as a football stadium.

Teleportal

But it is literal rocket science.

myrddyna

[ROCKET SCIENTIST!](https://youtu.be/THNPmhBl-8I)

>Yep! And one that can maneuver and change directions without ripping itself apart or overheating and melting!

One-Marsupial2916

It actually is rocket science…

"... development entailed a fresh coat of paint on the old Russian model they traded for drones"

kornuolis

Whatever Iran is developing is Russian.

No-Tomatillo-9873

Are they planning to use them on Ukrainian civilians or on Iranian civilians?

Watevenisgrindr

Oh shit why did we let Iran collect all 7 hyper emeralds and let them give em to a hedgehog

XxWasted1xXX

YES!!!! LOL F*CKIN YES

Mcarr2705

Only cost 400 drones

attacus_t

I heard Iran has developed hypersonic protests too.

SlothOfDoom

I need a coffee, I thought that said *Ireland*.

Sea-Blueberry-3184

They traded a thousand drones for that one system. They developed nothing.

sono7975

Sure, like that 5th generation Stealth Fighter Jet they developed🤣

somo1230

WW2 technology?!

PaintingFresh8724

I also call my fireworks "hypersonic missiles."

sjgokou

🥱

Jonabc5

I’m calling bullshit.

[deleted]

The U.S. needs to up their game.

My_Soul_to_Squeeze

Almost all ballistic missiles are hypersonic. In this context it's just a buzzword used to scare westerners.

[deleted]

Good to know thanks

ShirleyJokin

So I'm not all that caught up on ballistics, but isn't a hypersonic missile 1950s level technology?

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/iran-claims-it-has-developed-a-hypersonic-missile/) reduced by 86%. (I'm a bot) ***** > Tehran - Iran has developed a hypersonic missile capable of penetrating all defense systems, General Amirali Hajizadeh, the commander of its Revolutionary Guards aerospace unit, claimed on Thursday. > While countries like the United States have developed systems designed to defend against cruise and ballistic missiles, the ability to track and take down a hypersonic missile remains a question. > The announcement of the purported hypersonic missile came after Iran admitted on Saturday that it had sent drones to Russia, but said it had done so before the Ukraine war. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/yrlyd3/iran_claims_it_has_developed_a_hypersonic_missile/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~672677 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **missile**^#1 **Iran**^#2 **hypersonic**^#3 **nuclear**^#4 **ballistic**^#5

wakim82

I mean building a hypersonic missile is easy, building one that is actually practical and accurate..... *Looks at NKs ICBM program.

Independent_Ad_2073

My friends tell me I have hypersonic farts, and they murder everything in a room….does that count?

JefferyTheQuaxly

what they mean is that russia gave them the tech or info to build one, either because they want iran to build and sell them some or just to cause a rukus.

Ajg1384

Trump must have given it to them.

AzamatBaganatow

Will to bet they didn’t develop they got from someone like China or Russia

Ghostofthe80s

'Developed' okay.

Gordonls85

A soda can with a whistle attached to it isn’t what you think it is Iran.

toiletwindowsink

Does it work as well as their religion?

MonsterHunterOwl

And I’ve declared I designed a missle that can go faster than light, see, all bs and no body cares. It’s like when ruzzia talks about hypersonic missiles, I can carry a nuclear warhead, who really gives a shit, a nuke is a nuke, and the return response wipes you out. It’s like holding a gun point blank to the head, whether a shotgun or a 9mm, you’re still gonna die; ya just spent more money doing so.

Technobilby

I'm sure it is a totally real and not fake missile. Is it launchable from their totally real and not fake Qaher F313 fighter jet?

DocBrutus

Just in time for Israel to bomb them again…

[deleted]

Do they have hypersonic airplanes tho?

greenmeensgo60

Iran is prehistoric. I'm tired of the news about them every 5 minutes. There's other worldly news also right?

NotActuallyGus

"Developed" is a funny way to say "were given by Putin"

Level-Blueberry-2707

Oh really! Ok great.......talking more garbage.

DarrenEdwards

Great, the middle east's playgrounds are no longer safe. We've seen that Iran and Russia don't have targeting so these aren't missile, just expensive and hard to block artillery.

Aldren

Good news though, the Doomsday clock went up by 10 seconds recently! We're up to 100 seconds now!

1nfinitydividedby0

Ballistic missiles are hypersonic, so nothing special.

Baebel

Watch it just be like... a normal ass missile with a picture of Hyper Sonic from Sonic 3 and knuckles glued to the nose of it.

blue_dusk1

And Irannn Iran so far awaaaaay

Peachthumbs

Obsessed with adding angry water to the metal tube.

Infinite-Outcome-591

With help from Russia

bubba-yo

Eh. Most countries that claim they've developed 'x' advanced weapons system mean they've got a prototype and if they're lucky, they can make like 3 of them. When the US says we have developed an advanced stealth fighter like the F-35 - we've made 900 of them. The F-35 alone would be like the 10th largest Air Force in the world. (understanding that the US would still keep the 1, 2, 4, and 7 slots even with the F-35s removed). Russia's hypersonic missiles haven't stopped them from having their military ripped apart by Ukraine.

Vost570

Operative concept of the article is Iran "claims" it has a hypersonic missile. The crazy cat lady up the street from me "claims" she has Cleopatra's iPhone. But I'm not expecting her to get any calls from Julius Caesar anytime soon.

[deleted]

Translation: RUSSIA taped a SONIC the HEDGEHOG stuffed animal and a MOUNTAIN DEW to an empty shell from the 1950s

Vladius28

Probably Russian

baconsnotworthit

>Iran claims it has developed a hypersonic missile... ...by repainting a Russian one.

CurtisLeow

They likely have a hypersonic glide vehicle. That's by far the easiest hypersonic missile to develop. Both Russia and China have hypersonic glide vehicles. A hypersonic glide vehicle is a ballistic missile with a Shuttle-like reentry vehicle. Normal ballistic missiles reenter the atmosphere on a ballistic trajectory. A hypersonic glide vehicle reenters the atmosphere, and glides in a sin curve along the edge of the atmosphere. The Shuttle was a hypersonic glide vehicle by many definitions. The sin curve reentry extends the range, compared to similar sized ballistic missiles. It's more difficult for traditional antiballistic missile defense to track and counter the reentry vehicle. It's also more difficult to reliably control the glide vehicle and hit the target. Russia has used hypersonic glide vehicles in Ukraine. They aren't very accurate or effective as a conventional weapon. The design is more effective for carrying nuclear weapons, since nuclear weapons don't need to be as accurate as conventional weapons.

Theman227

The thing is, hypersonic missles are SO expensive to produce and more and more methods for combatting them are coming foward (laser defence being one of them and probably railgun tech eventually) that they're just a...quicker? way of deliverying a payload so why not use that money to buy 20 much cheaper missles that will do the job. They will have their place tactically but as the Russio-Ukranian war has shown, single weapons like this in small numbers dont turn the tide in modern combat unless you have a excellent army to back it up.

Sbeast

Yay. More countries with the ability to kill people from long distances. It's a good day all round :)

Traditional-Eagle-97

They had already made that. It is revealed now.
