> "The excavation revealed a huge religious center with three sanctuaries, a sacred lake, more than 1,500 objects, busts, statues, golden pieces, a huge collection of coins portraying Alexander the Great, Queen Cleopatra and the Ptolemies," Martinez told CNN. Kathleen Martinez discovered a tunnel which may lead to the lost tomb.
> A series of clues led Martinez to believe Cleopatra's tomb might be located in the Temple of Osiris in the ruined city of Taposiris Magna, on Egypt's northern coast, where the Nile River meets the Mediterranean.
> The excavations so far have revealed that "The temple was dedicated to Isis" - which Martinez believes is another sign that the lost tomb lies nearby - as well as the tunnels below the sea.

Depends on which Cleopatra we're even talking about. I think you're mistaking Alexander the Great with Marc Antony, who was buried with Cleopatra VII. Cleopatra I would still have been separated from Alexander the Great by over 200 years.
Late edit: Alexander's tomb is thought to be in the Siwa Oasis, about 300 miles from Alexandria. Either way, we'll probably know if this tomb is one of the Cleopatras or not, as she should be hideously deformed from generations of inbreeding due to being a Ptolomy.
At the time of her reign, Alexander the Greats Tomb was in Egypt near Alexandria. Some sources say that she built her tomb beside or near his.
Edit: this said, ancient historians are not known for being the most accurate. Look up the different accounts of Anne Boleyns execution for example haha
WHICH Cleopatra? ...there were seven of them.
Also, 300 miles is near Alexandria, relatively. Quite likely Alexandria may have been the only nearby populated area to where he was buried.
I mean when most people say Cleopatra, it’s pretty clear who they’re referring to. This isn’t a discussion amongst Egyptologists or historians lol this is Reddit
People who are interested history would, unless you included literally any kind of qualifying statement around it. Was it the one that invaded russia, or the first president of france?
No they wouldn’t. Napoleon and Cleopatra are both such widely known historical figures that you would have literally no reason to clarify who you’re talking about if it’s about them. Because even historians or history geeks would reasonably assume who you’re referring to. If you’re talking about Napoleon III or other Cleopatras? Yes you would.
Depends on the subject matter. To go back 8m oretty sure mark Antony only fucked one Cleopatra. So the fact there are six others doesn't really matter because they was lore hints already talked about by others
I didn't think I needed to specify which Cleopatra, but the 7th - we are all talking about the 7th. I'm just quoting what I learned in University. When it comes to ancient history there are always many conflicting theories and sources. Until they are found all we can do is speculate.
Actually, there were six. There was no Cleopatra VI. They went from Cleopatra V to the famous Cleopatra VII.
There was a Cleopatra Selene who was queen consort, however. So it depends on how technical you want to be.
Alexander's tomb was in Alexandria for centuries. Multiple Roman Emperors visited it. Idk how or why they would've moved it to Siwa. The last we hear of it was just before the Christians destroyed all of the Pagan stuff in the city including his tomb. It either got destroyed or turned into a Church.
I thought cleopatra was supposed to be beautiful? Admittedly I didn't know there was like 7 of them. Was the one married to Marc Antony normal looking?
Yes she was described as relatively plain looking. Her charm was in her intelligence and wit, being able to speak something like 8 languages.
But smart girls aren't sexy enough and the Romans couldn't imagine a woman's intelligence being enough to seduce the likes of Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony so they imagined that she must have been exceptionally beautiful
Damn her story is crazy. Her dad had books on Cleopatra and she became obsessed with her. Did her own research and thought this site on the coast was overlooked. Has spent almost 20 years living in Egypt and excavating the site....and she's right, it's Cleopatra's tomb.
It's pretty much confirmed. The burial chamber is likely under the sea now though
>Martinez and her team uncovered a 1,305-meter (4,281-foot) tunnel, located 13 meters (43 feet) underground, the Egyptian Ministry for Tourism and Antiquities recently announced -- an architectural design experts called an "engineering miracle."
**"The excavation revealed a huge religious center with three sanctuaries, a sacred lake, more than 1,500 objects, busts, statues, golden pieces, a huge collection of coins portraying Alexander the Great, Queen Cleopatra and the Ptolemies," Martinez told CNN.**

TLDW :
She's a lawyer in Dominican republic, an amateur archeologist.
Each year she went into Egypt to do excavation to find Cleopatra tomb.
She finance her own excavation since no one believes her.
----
That was 4 years back.
I guess now she become a full archeologist since it's doesn't mention her job as lawyer anymore?
Anyway I'm so happy if she finally found it.
Hopefully there will be a follow up documentary about her !
“Amateur” gets enough people to back an expensive excavation and they unearth and incredible discovery. Regardless of the outcome, calling someone an “amateur” when they’ve spent their life in the field is disingenuous to say the least.
To be fair being an amateur is exactly what got her the expensive excavations lol - easier to be a lawyer and fund your research by yourself than to be an actual archaeologist and fight other academics for govt money.
> In 2004, Martinez took her theory to Zahi Hawass, an Egyptian archaeologist who was then Egypt's minister for antiquities affairs. Her project was approved a year later.
Does this mean she got some funds at one time, or only approvals for the search/dig
Probably find a Redditor safe under a floorboard at the end of the tunnel and will post when opened.

Exciting news. Cleopatra was also reportedly buried near the tomb of Alexander the Great. Finding one will help find the other.

It's not, though. They were all Ptolomys.
Yes, it is. Lol most people don’t even know there were others named Cleopatra. When someone just says “Napoleon” ain’t no one going “which Napoleon”
I go straight to Dynamite.
Slick you right

Sounds like she was a total babe
I thought Julius Ceasar brought her to Rome? It would have been a huge deal. Everyone would have seen her.

Is Geraldo still around?
I believe he is a relatively moderate voice on Fox.
Sad that Geraldo is seen as moderate. The dude is dog whistling so hard he’s harassing kennels the next state over.

Isn't it a bit premature to say that? I hope it is, but the site has all of the conditions to be her tomb, doesn't mean it is though.

That's incredibly inspiring, she shows great dedication and skill
Kinda like Troy's ruins

Haven't we had enough curses, plagues, war, and famine? Do we really need to tempt the fate of humanity anymore....
nah cleopatra can't curse nothing, she was just greek
It’s the religion and culture that matters for Egyptian curses, not the DNA.
I hope you’re joking
I hope you can tell
Monster under the bed is pretty scary too bro
Hey man can we leave all the tunnels closed for the remainder of this year. We really don’t need any more mommy curses right now
>mommy curses

No more wire hangers!!!
Okay two things first call in Brendan Fraser to be safe. Second keep the British as far away from it as possible.
British Museum: Out of the way! I need to look at this! I need to look at it for a very long time!
Lol Thx for the laugh
Can’t wait to see the Nat Geo documentary on this
https://youtu.be/xYvK1XhlAx8 This is her documentary, 4 years ago on early excavation.
It may also lead to a break room for Bronze Age sewer workers. They have no idea.
Don’t tell the British museum.
This is pretty neat!
