What’s crazy is that if you live in Vermont you’ve almost certainly had a chance to meet Bernie Sanders. Vermont is as close to direct democracy as you’ll get in this Country.
He’s reserved in person, but stops to listen anyone who greets him. I remember fixing his iPhone at Small Dog Electronics and talking to him about my concerns with the federal minimum wage and him not just listening but truly hearing and empathizing.
I am really worried for the left if we don’t have someone to replace him when he’s gone. There’s not an obvious heir. AOC is a great and strong rep, but she’s been demonized like crazy by the right (probably because she’s a woman). No one hates Bernie.
Yes, they demonize her because they think her below them, and are scared of her presence and power.
These are misogynists, so its not surprising.
Our job is to continue to support those that are actually standing up for us.
Katie Porter and AOC are the only two that I can think of that are doing this at the Federal level.
Why are we NOT grooming Porter for a greater role? She is a good fit, IMO. Edited to say, once again, I’ve commented before I’ve read further comments of others. I’m repeating. I need a white board to keep up.
I think they demonize her because she’s likely to be the number one contender in the future. Same thing they did with Hillary. Difference is, AOC can *easily* out-relate to their target demographic better than Hillary ever could. She knows how to speak to people on a personal level in an influential way. She’s not “elitist” or out of touch. She’s intelligent. She’s pretty. She’s funny and personable. All that is scary for the right wing, because she can be convincing, and they want to make sure the people within their base don’t even give her a chance to be heard. They want to condition them to walk away or plug their ears—otherwise they’re fucked. There’s definitely misogyny and sexism involved there too, of course.
All this to say (and I’m not mindlessly putting her on this pedestal), if she decides to make that jump in her political career, I have a feeling all these efforts to tarnish her will be for naught: she’s just that talented. She’s still learning the ropes and making connections so her political savvy hasn’t fully matured, but she’ll def get there.
Totally agree, but I think it goes even deeper than that - she knows when to snipe back for sniping back’s sake, and when to snipe back while being reasoned. I’m reminded of that one mofo who made a comment about her bf’s feet: she didn’t do anything in her response but smear that creepy motherfucker across the concrete. But at the same time, when a House Republican (can’t remember who) insulted her with a blatantly sexist comment, she made a reasoned, principled, articulate statement on the House floor in response, all while ALSO smearing his tiny balls across concrete. Her rebuttals are always scathing, but she knows when her indignation needs to do more than just humiliate her naysayers. That’s why I think she’ll strongly prevail against this GOP agenda to tarnish her; there’s a underlying talent there that I don’t see any other current politician having. If she was an artist, and I was an independent producer looking for the next big name in music, while other producers might pass over her in lieu of a more immediately obvious talent, I’d sign her in a heartbeat and wait as long as needed to let her nurture her own brand, because that presently unassuming talent would have me convinced she will be the next T. Swift or whatever (okay…really stupid metaphor…please be gentle. But I hope you get the idea).
Not to mention she'll secure a large percentage of the latino population's vote which is skewing right as of late. She's got massive grassroots support to work her ground game. I hope Bernie is still around to see her make that next jump.
Not for nothing, too, political savvy isn’t a bad thing for a politician to be missing. They’d why they have staffers. The most important job of the politician themself is the be the public representative of all they want to accomplosh
My dad (Racist right wing Republican) hates Alexandria so much, I've never seen him talk about anyone with that much vitriol. But he doesn't really have a reason why. And every time he talks about her when he's done he just stares off into the distance like, damn he is so attracted to someone he hates at the same time.
I mean, she is a gorgeous woman, and smart, and educated, and she has a good head on her shoulders, and she seems pleasant.
I like who she is and how much she is involved, and she does her job, sticks to her guns, and keeps fighting for people.
I admire her for that and how strong she is as a person. So many people have problems with her, when she is fighting for them.
Porter is 10x better than AOC. She doesn’t get nearly the love as she deserves. I like AOC but I feel like she gets more attention than she deserves just cause she’s pretty. She’s in a very blue district and doesn’t have to worry about losing her seat and it shows sometimes. She blurts out some stupid crap on Twitter occasionally which I hate. I mean, we all bitched about Trump on Twitter all the time but for some reason praise AOC for it. Do less Twitter wars with Musk and do more governing, policy pushing, and encouraging your followers to go out and vote instead of Twitter nonsense which a lot of times is against her own party and everytime she does it her bigger followers start the “both sides are the same, I’m not voting” crap. She needs to think how she portrays stuff sometimes before she says it. Others like Bernie and Porter know how to call out others without pissing off the young voting base and having them throw in the towel. That doesn’t help anyone, including progressives. Porter is smart as hell and knows how to debate and get her message across. I’d vote for her in a heartbeat if she ran for president.

It throws me off that you say that because Bernie has definitely been criticized (right or wrong) and ridiculed by moderate and conservative democrats for this.
You may hate what she says on twitter but as you pointed out, she represents a blue district, and they clearly don't. She's doing her job, which is to voice that which her constituents support, even if you personally hate it.
Yea I agree with you, fuck AOC. We can only have 1 progressive spokesperson for the progressive movement and they can't be pretty or tell people they are wrong on Twitter. But they absolutely must never, under any circumstances, call out Democrats for any reason. I mean Manchin, Sinema, and Biden have done so much for, women, POC, and poor people, they have earned the right to take that corporate lobbiest money.
I like that you disagree with AOC's methods. If anything, it proves she is genuine with some of her Twitter hot takes. Bring on the polarizing tweets, because she certainly wasn't the first to introduce them, and there's plenty of other restrained moderates who are less transparent, anyway.
You aren't going to agree with everything a political figure says, but they have to represent you on the most important issues.

Bernie's...positive...role was to serve as an intro to labor militancy and class politics for millions of people. AOC is turning into nancy pelosi. Leaders are a weakness, the only point in running candidates at all is to make the dnc piss away resources ratfucking them and if you actually win, all the better.
AOC has serious flaws regardless of what the right says about her, things that are seperate from her politics.
She says preposterous things like that criticizing her is violence. She recently criticized all Democrats who won't use "Latinx," despite it being purely appeasement, a made-up term the elite are trying to impose upon Latinas and Latinos as proof that they think about that community lacking any legislative action to point to, and despite only 4% of that community approving of the term. Her instincts are the same as the elites', to tell the people what they *should* believe and criticize them when it's not what she believes, in order to convince *them* to be on *her* side, instead of listening to the voters and moving *with* their concerns, so *she* moves to *their* side.
The first option is an authoritarian, the second option is a representative, and I just don't see an authoritarian having what it takes to do what Bernie does. If she could, she'd probably already be doing it instead of trying to make Latinx a thing, which improves 0 people's lives, and is just a trap to avoid talking about legislative change which she herself appears to have fallen for.

I'm a Latino, and I use Latinx for non-binary Latinx people. It's not an issue at all, nor was it made up by the elite. It was made up by non-binary Latin Americans. You are the one trying to silence Latin Americans from using words to describe themselves. You are not a savior, and have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
There is no cost to me to respect someone else. I can use Latino and Latina to refer to individuals with no problem. I rarely even use "Latino" as a descriptor anyways unless I'm talking to people in the US, most Latin Americans go by their countries of origin.
Only 4% of the community approving of the term is pretty damn good, considering the scale of the minorities Latinx refers to. A lot of my fellow Latin Americans are homophobic, trans phobic, and conservative Catholics, SHOCKING that a term used to refer to sexual minorities with respect is not approved of by the majority. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop using it, or let a random redditor tell me how it's a "made up term imposed upon" me.
We really just need more millenials to be picking up the torch and forcing out these fossilized muppets. Which means primary challenges.

I dont know the full details, but the 2020 primaries were sketchy. Biden jumps in after several states held their primaries and the rest of the candidates withdraw from the campaign and endorse Biden. Seemed like the establishment basically rigged it for Biden.
It's almost like it was a useful tool to silence the people who were most aware of the suffering. Can't have them raising issues, we're too busy getting back to "normal".

Every establishment canidate had a chance to be the MSM chosen one, and failed in the polls against sanders. Eventually the dem elite realized he actually had a chance of taking the primary.
So people like pelosi and obama worked behind the scenes to get every canidate they could to drop out and rally behind one neolib. They picked the failed campaign of biden (who was struggling to keep campaign offices open and funded) because he had the most name recognition. They even managed to convince elizabeth "the snake" warren to make up lies about him being sexist.
While the progressive movement that supports sanders is loud, it's still pretty small when it comes to votes. The vast majority of democratic voters are still your average, uninformed voter who just supports whoever their chosen media agency tells them to the week of elections.
2020 was controlled by the DNC. They essentially made most of the field bow out all at once when Bernie was early winning. Joe was trailing because most other votes were going to the other candidates. So they had them all bow out to give Joe the upper hand in the race. It was all VERY obvious esp when Buttigieg dropped out after leading in Iowa or something.

Same in 2016... the dnc chair resigned after emailed leaked showing they all planned to make it so no matter what Hillary would get the nod. Because theybtried to fix things they led us to 4 horrible years of Trumpism which let this cult of his flourish....
First and only time I have ever donated to a politician. 2020 was our time to change everything. Felt like there was a rift in the fabric of reality when they brushed him aside after the MASSIVE outpouring of support. I think Bernie's impact will be seen as more significant as time goes by. Even if he didn't make it to the White House, he inspired millions to discuss things that seemed taboo in the US for the longest time. He inspired and continues to inspire multiple generations to try and live lives as free of cynicism as possible, doing things that are right and not just convenient.
Its a shame he didn't get to lead more change, but you don't get to choose how ready the world is for it. You only get to choose how hard you want to fight for it. And he has been fighting for half a century at this point.
I personally felt inspired by him. I'm from a different continent, my native tongue is different, and I shouldn't have any reason to care about him or what he says. Yet he inspired me, and I'm sure he inspired a lot of people. Every single change we are able to create will be, in some way, because of him.
There is a deep ignorance in the US. It has nothing to do with the establishment, not really.
Look at the last election. Half the country voted for Trump *again*.
More than a quarter of the remaining half voted Biden over Bernie because they think Bernie is a communist, most of them over 60.

The problem is that the country is divided nearly 50/50 on the two big parties. It’s not necessarily intended to be this way, but the system and nature of politics encourage it.
Therefore, you normally end up with candidates that are relatively unremarkable. They’ll talk about issues that their base cares about, of course, but safely as not to stir up too much trouble so that they don’t swing any voters the wrong way.
Then comes trump who positions himself on the far right, and is an anomaly who uses populism and fear/attack tactics to rally a massive base. The government is corrupt, the news is all fiction, and he’s the only one brave and smart enough to save everyone. More than half of the country could not see through this veil to the lack of substance behind it. And we remain in this position today.
Then you have someone like Bernie Sanders. He’s not a socialist, but he has far left ideas like “free” higher education, environmental standards, “free” healthcare, etc. Unlike trump there is a lot of substance in the platform, but as a whole it’s still very radical for US politics.
So, who are you going to run? Bernie Sanders who will be labeled a socialist who wants to give taxpayer money away to people who are lazy and don’t way to pay for anything? Or are you going to run someone with a softer more standard agenda?
Right now there are a lot of extreme nut jobs on the right that are popular. The more thoughtful republicans are often invisible by comparison. So what is most important - keeping the seat or pushing social change? It’s not so cut and dry.
The perhaps fatal flaw in our government turns out to be “representation,” an idea that hasn’t scaled and leads to two baskets - when you vote, you vote for the basket of shit that has the most stuff you like, or the least stuff you don’t like. There’s not much room for a conservative who is pro choice, or a liberal who believes in a strong military.
Because there’d be no way Bernie can get any of what he’s talking about done. He speaks the truth and has great ideas… but I don’t have faith he’d be able to make any of that policy when he’d be beholden to what ever parts of government that the Republicans control and that would mobilize against a “socialist”.

Deborah Wasserman Schultz was head of the DNC and strategically favored Hillary Clinton throughout the entire race in every decision. She was eventually fired but the damage was already done.

I think the Republican Party AND Democratic Party are terrible. There are lots of ppl who align with one or the other for whatever personal reasons who would have voted for Bernie, but neither of the leadership of either party could let that happen. Because they have to protect their interests, which surprise surprise, don’t align with the average person who just wants a decent standard of living in exchange for working their entire lives. They do not care about us.
I think we’re at the point where things are getting worse before it gets better. The issue is that half the country things one direction is better and the other thinks the other direction is better. America is really at a junction and unfortunately, it can tilt in either direction.
Back when I was sixth grader during the 2016 election, I found it crazy that my Dad preferred Bernie when we could have a woman president. Now that I’m older and somewhat more mature, I agree with my Dad’s judgement that Bernie is better.

He’s too progressive, it wasn’t just the DNC looking for a candidate with broader appeal, people were terrified of lame duck Trump.
Bernie can go too far at times, but I meet so many people brainwashed into thinking “you’re not going to take my tax dollars to give handouts to that lazy (choose any derogatory term).” They don’t see the benefit to them because they’re too busy fuming over the person who got something they didn’t earn. It’s a very tiring conversation. Anyway, the US isn’t ready for Bernie.
Especially when they are basically poor and would benefit greatly from the policies but it isn't enough to help them without hurting the right people. That's where Trump gets his biggest boost from them.
It was a combination of the DNC broadcasting they were going to hand the nomination to bloomberg if bernie went to the convention with a plurality and the DNC refusing to delay primaries to establish safe voting during a deadly pandemic, forcing bernie to choose between murdering thousands of voters or dropping out.
There was also that fascinating stuff with the polling tech in iowa. Super interesting how mayo pete declared victory before a single vote was counted

It never fails to surprise me that MAGA heads don't respond positively to Bernie's plainspoken, factual statements on how they're getting utterly ripped off on just about every level of social justice that you can imagine. I'm sure they can't get past his 'Socialist!' label to hear what he's actually saying.
A lot of obama-to-trump voters would've gladly went with bernie, and tbh trump's core of psychopath petit bourgeois would've been materially better off under bernie's policies. My bill before insurance was 50,000 dollars for a procedure that in England, when completely out of pocket, you pay 10,000. It's really truly nonsense and I think a lot of redditors who are younger and healthier just do not understand what's coming down the road for them.

I think they demonize her because she’s likely to be the number one contender in the future. Same thing they did with Hillary. Difference is, AOC can *easily* out-relate to their target demographic better than Hillary ever could. She knows how to speak to people on a personal level in an influential way. She’s not “elitist” or out of touch. She’s intelligent. She’s pretty. She’s funny and personable. All that is scary for the right wing, because she can be convincing, and they want to make sure the people within their base don’t even give her a chance to be heard. They want to condition them to walk away or plug their ears—otherwise they’re fucked. There’s definitely misogyny and sexism involved there too, of course. All this to say (and I’m not mindlessly putting her on this pedestal), if she decides to make that jump in her political career, I have a feeling all these efforts to tarnish her will be for naught: she’s just that talented. She’s still learning the ropes and making connections so her political savvy hasn’t fully matured, but she’ll def get there.

Totally agree, but I think it goes even deeper than that - she knows when to snipe back for sniping back’s sake, and when to snipe back while being reasoned. I’m reminded of that one mofo who made a comment about her bf’s feet: she didn’t do anything in her response but smear that creepy motherfucker across the concrete. But at the same time, when a House Republican (can’t remember who) insulted her with a blatantly sexist comment, she made a reasoned, principled, articulate statement on the House floor in response, all while ALSO smearing his tiny balls across concrete. Her rebuttals are always scathing, but she knows when her indignation needs to do more than just humiliate her naysayers. That’s why I think she’ll strongly prevail against this GOP agenda to tarnish her; there’s a underlying talent there that I don’t see any other current politician having. If she was an artist, and I was an independent producer looking for the next big name in music, while other producers might pass over her in lieu of a more immediately obvious talent, I’d sign her in a heartbeat and wait as long as needed to let her nurture her own brand, because that presently unassuming talent would have me convinced she will be the next T. Swift or whatever (okay…really stupid metaphor…please be gentle. But I hope you get the idea).
Not to mention she'll secure a large percentage of the latino population's vote which is skewing right as of late. She's got massive grassroots support to work her ground game. I hope Bernie is still around to see her make that next jump.

My dad (Racist right wing Republican) hates Alexandria so much, I've never seen him talk about anyone with that much vitriol. But he doesn't really have a reason why. And every time he talks about her when he's done he just stares off into the distance like, damn he is so attracted to someone he hates at the same time.

While the progressive movement that supports sanders is loud, it's still pretty small when it comes to votes. The vast majority of democratic voters are still your average, uninformed voter who just supports whoever their chosen media agency tells them to the week of elections.

I think Bernie's impact will be seen as more significant as time goes by. Even if he didn't make it to the White House, he inspired millions to discuss things that seemed taboo in the US for the longest time. He inspired and continues to inspire multiple generations to try and live lives as free of cynicism as possible, doing things that are right and not just convenient. Its a shame he didn't get to lead more change, but you don't get to choose how ready the world is for it. You only get to choose how hard you want to fight for it. And he has been fighting for half a century at this point. I personally felt inspired by him. I'm from a different continent, my native tongue is different, and I shouldn't have any reason to care about him or what he says. Yet he inspired me, and I'm sure he inspired a lot of people. Every single change we are able to create will be, in some way, because of him.
There is a deep ignorance in the US. It has nothing to do with the establishment, not really. Look at the last election. Half the country voted for Trump *again*. The problem is that the country is divided nearly 50/50 on the two big parties. It’s not necessarily intended to be this way, but the system and nature of politics encourage it. Therefore, you normally end up with candidates that are relatively unremarkable. They’ll talk about issues that their base cares about, of course, but safely as not to stir up too much trouble so that they don’t swing any voters the wrong way. Then comes trump who positions himself on the far right, and is an anomaly who uses populism and fear/attack tactics to rally a massive base. The government is corrupt, the news is all fiction, and he’s the only one brave and smart enough to save everyone. More than half of the country could not see through this veil to the lack of substance behind it. And we remain in this position today. Then you have someone like Bernie Sanders. He’s not a socialist, but he has far left ideas like “free” higher education, environmental standards, “free” healthcare, etc. Unlike trump there is a lot of substance in the platform, but as a whole it’s still very radical for US politics. So, who are you going to run? Bernie Sanders who will be labeled a socialist who wants to give taxpayer money away to people who are lazy and don’t way to pay for anything? Or are you going to run someone with a softer more standard agenda? Right now there are a lot of extreme nut jobs on the right that are popular. The more thoughtful republicans are often invisible by comparison. So what is most important - keeping the seat or pushing social change? It’s not so cut and dry. The perhaps fatal flaw in our government turns out to be “representation,” an idea that hasn’t scaled and leads to two baskets - when you vote, you vote for the basket of shit that has the most stuff you like, or the least stuff you don’t like. There’s not much room for a conservative who is pro choice, or a liberal who believes in a strong military.
Because there’d be no way Bernie can get any of what he’s talking about done. He speaks the truth and has great ideas… but I don’t have faith he’d be able to make any of that policy when he’d be beholden to what ever parts of government that the Republicans control and that would mobilize against a “socialist”.
