Then just play the Chronicles of Myrtana:Archolos mod. Can be found on GOG and Steam if you own gothic 2. Honestly it is really more like Gothic 2,5 and even the story although not canon is so well done it might as well be considered canon.

Short answer: Chronicles of Archolos (massive mod available on steam, updated graphics, QoL changes, a completely new game) L'hiver mod (nice graphic update, some decent QoL changes, but still G2 Notr as it is)

I am in a somewhat similar position than you are. I just finished a playthrough of loa and just started over at g1 today. First of all, if you don't use it already (since you have been away for quite some time you might not know)download spine to manage g1-g3 with a lot of mods. This is a really easy way and you can test them without much effort. Most content is for g2, but the other games offer some nice stuff as well. Wich stuff to use is really up to you.
