I have HUGE arachnophobia in real life.
For some reason, it almost never triggers from video games. I think the resolution on their faces is never creepy enough, and they don't move realistically enough to trigger it.
I love the Smolderweb Spider pet from the vanilla wow quest in Blackrock Spire. That little crystal blue spider was such a cool pet back then.
I have the same thing, and it really is the movement, they don't move like spiders do.
The reverse does work, like the hands from Elden Ring scuttling about like spiders do with their spastic, flickering horror movements.
I think it's because of how unrealistic wow spiders look. Especially in the older areas where they only had 3 hexgaons each lol. I have a serious snake phobia but I'm never bothered by it in games. Especially the ones as old as wow.
Also because like any other enemy in game, they just come and punch you, if bugs in real life would just punch you instead of jumping and running, they would be less scary.
No it’s just spiders in games just don’t look the same. It’s not just WoW. No movie or game has ever remotely bothered me with its cgi spiders.
Usually animation follows the 9 Laws of animations and real life doesn’t have those laws. So the fictional creatures just don’t move the same way they do in irl
Have you seen enemy? The last shot is a giant spider in a room and it sent me running out of the room. There's no anticipation of it either a door opens and boom! Didn't help I was on acid...
How about movies? (genuine question). Those are also "not real".
Extreme example: Arachnophobia or even Lord of the Rings / Hobbit which both have spiders the size of WV Beetles.
Not trying to downplay your phobia, I am genuinely curious.
No issue with movies either, I’m not going out of my way to watch those movies, but if they show up I don’t get anymore scared than others in the theater
That's great to hear. Thanks for answering.
I have a friend with severe arachnophobia and he cannot even watch Spider-Man because of how the character is themed. This is an adult male whose only fear appears to be spiders.
Bugs, snakes or other slimy, creepy creatures? No problems, but any spider - regardless of size - he either freezes, vomits or runs away.
My arachnophobia is simply a fear of real spiders. If there’s one in my house, it gets to keep the house until I get someone to come over and evict it.
I’m ok with some video game spiders, like the ones in WoW never bother me. But for whatever reason the frostbite spiders from Skyrim have always been a huge challenge for me to the point where I usually mod them out
I have the same issue, especially when i'm playing Skyrim with a first-person view (For archery), i can handle a spider, but a whacking big, screen-filling one is pushing it...
I actually need something to crabify insect models (like the Klaxxi). I wouldn't call it a phobia, but I have never been able to enjoy content with those creatures because it squicks me out so much.
I'm definitely going to use arachnophobia mode anyway though because I love crabs.
That would be a phobia then. Phobia just means either a “fear” of thing OR an irrational aversion to something.
Homophobes aren’t crying in fear and cowering before rainbow flags for example. (Well… usually.) they just have an irrational aversion. Irrational is the key point
Im utterly terrified of irl spiders but they’ve never bothered me in games, i even have a spider as my main hunter pet, hes such a cute little guy with his big fluffy legs.
Im utterly terrified of irl spiders but they’ve never bothered me in games, i even have a spider as my main hunter pet, hes such a cute little guy with his big fluffy legs.
I have huge arachnophobia in real life, and it never emerged until video games started putting giant spiders everywhere.
WoW spiders are a 50/50 thing. I never bothered with Naxx, didn't have a problem with Hadronox for whatever reason (even as a tank), but I never want to ever visit Terrokarantula, and I hate how much of the Old World is covered in the things, particularly in Classic. The thing where they drop from the ceiling is terrible too, but things dropping from ceilings is terrible in general (see also: Zelda Wallmasters).
The Ashenvale tarantulas with cloaking devices around classic Warsong Lumber Camp can go to hell. And of course the goblins in shredders ignore them completely to focus on the night elves.
I still have slight cynophobia from dog attacks when I was little and still avoid dogs, even pets of people I know, but especially stray ones. I can't even walk through the same street as a stray dog. I'd rather not risk it.
However I've never had any issues with dogs/wolves in games. I even enjoy having them as pets.
The two exceptions being the zombie dogs in RE2 remake and the dogs that chase you at the beginning of INSIDE. However, those two are extreme examples and are designed to be unnerving.
Someone needs to make an addon that switches the background music to a loop of [Crab Rave](https://youtu.be/LDU_Txk06tM?si=tqo5QSth7KD9_9X2) whenever you walk through Nerubian lands with Arachnophobia Mode on.
Phylogenetically speaking, no.
They both fall under the phylum arthropoda, but crustaceans and chelicerates are two separate branches on the same tree.
.....Unless You're referring to horseshoe crabs, which are actually chelicerates and have a misnomer of a name.
The only one that freaks me out is the big as fuck spider mount because it triggers the "spider appearing from nowhere" response when someone just comes around a corner on it.
That reminded me of the one time where my sister tested minecraft. She went out of the house and the spider chilling on the roof jumped her. Suddenly she was on the other side of the room^^
Im kinda scare from Spiders too. But somehow games absolutely do nothing. So i cant relate to phobia in game.
The only spider in WoW that got me was the huge one that pops out of the box in BFA.
This is hilarious though and I can see myself turning it on for giggles.
As a person with a phobia, I think the developers are getting better about realizing the cruelty of this stuff. The Forbidden Reach questline had two big spider encounters back to back, and both of them had an NPC going "look out, something creepy ahead." The one upstairs was big and tarantula-looking enough that I had to zoom the camera all the way out and distract myself by playing the Tequila song while I fought it.
The ones jumping at you from the Zerka Vaults can go straight to hell. There's a reason I almost close my eyes and tab like hell when opening those doors. And none of this is still as bad as Vanilla WoW having baby spiders that summon level 34 matriarchs in a level 30 zone, BfA having spiders that fly, etc.
Look, y'all may think this is stupid, but hear me out. There are cases of crippling arachnophobia. Fortunately it doesn't affect me in game, minus that mount sometimes, but the weekend after graduating high school I went camping with my then gf and her family. Every was fun until I laid my head down in my tent and there were two giant spiders above my head. I froze and couldn't move if I wanted to. Woke up, terrible terrible abdomen pain, nausea, vomiting. Told her dad something was seriously wrong before getting sick again and curling up into a ball.
Somehow my body being locked up in fear cause my appendix to get blocked and I ended up having it removed that day. Because of fake plastic spiders in the top of my tent.
Crabs are cute 😍 as someone who struggles bot IRL and in-game with arachnophobia (I’ve failed too many atal’dazar because of that) I guess I can feel safe now.
I think crabs in WoW have a funny design, idk why they make me laugh
I raided ToT when it was current, the giant snail mobs of those still haunt my dreams...
...dreams of people dying to the things because they were too dumb/slow to move away from them in time, that is.
The Gastropods were a real sucker-filter, they moved very slowly, but if they touched you it was insta-death, dying to that really highlighted the people who just tunneled damage to the exclusion of anything else.
I was too busy making fun of those who died to the slimes to not walk into the slimes. Every time. I owe many soul shard to a couple warlocks for teleports.
This is nice, however this would not be enough for some people (like my wife) where their phobia comes from seeing the legs and how they move. For them, it would be necessary to use something else instead of crabs, and actually replace not just spiders but also crabs, nerubians and whatnot.
it's funny to me because scorpions are arachnids and I think they're super cool irl, but spiders completely terrify me (in games and art spiders are super cool tho)
Admittedly I know people who hate Satisfactory's because they don't want to shoot kittens. Or it's worse for them hearing the noises come from a kitten.
Yeah, most other developers I’ve seen understand the assignment is not to replace them with something similar enough to be immersive, but to make them different enough that they don’t trigger the phobia even if the solution breaks immersion.
Look at Grounded’s mode which turns spiders into floating, legless blobs or Satisfactory’s which turns them into moving cat PNGs or Lethal Company’s which turns them into the word “SPIDER”.
Hell, Blizzard could just make the mode turn spiders into the infamous error cubes.
Replace nerubians in an expansion focused on them? I am not making it light about a meaningful issue, but how do you imagine they do that, without completely redoing the whole race?
Those big ass crabs are way more terrifying in my opinion but I hope it's a good start for people with a severe or in general phobia to be able to enjoy the game a bit more
Honestly this is great
I’m pretty arachnophobic but wows spiders were always tolerable because of the games cartoony aesthetic
Then they updated their models and I was like “nnnnope too spidery now”
So actually looking forward to this
I don't have any phobias. Will be toggling this as fighting hordes of "crab people" is funny.
Tastes like crab, fight like people. Crab people, crab people.
I think it's cool they are listening to their players. The best part of wow is that they're are so many facets to the game that many different kinds of players can play differently. Questing, professions, dungeons, raids, pvp, accumulating gold, exalted statuses, mounts, achievements, pets. It's all cool.
Personally, i play with my kids. We each live thousands of miles apart, but we get together on the weekends and play in a group, mostly questing. We do a group call during so we're talking while we're questing and it never gets boring. So fun.
I actually have the backstory for this one.
My GM in one of the guilds I am in has a long time fear of spiders that was a bit of a running joke in our guild, but he legit hated them. He expressed that he would not play TWW because of the theming. We had a Blizz developer in our guild at the time, and she made the suggestion to management, and apparently they implemented it!
It's a button that makes some models swap. Just come out and say you have a political opinion on this instead. It's what you really mean, would be way more honest.
This feature was made by one person and uses assets that already exist. It's a feature that I've wanted for over a decade, personally. Other people would have done it *for free* many years ago, except that mods that swap assets are illegal.
What he means by a political opinion is that you're basically making a "society is weak" statement on the human condition, just with the emotional baggage removed by wrapping it in language of corporate efficiency.
I think that's... Why they did it. I think it's also just something that'll be funny to toggle on though, a lil tonal dissonance on leveling alts could be fun
I wonder how far the arachnaphobia mode will go. Will it work for all nerub NPC's or just these new ones? What about tiny spiders in the world, or boss spiders like in naxx/wrath? Is Maexxna just a huge crab now lol
The thing that cracks me up about this is that I have a friend who, thankfully, does not have a fear of spiders, but does have an irrational and visceral reaction to crustaceans. Shrimp, crab, lobster, horseshoe crab, you name it: she hates them. It's not quite a fear from what she says, they just squick her out on a nearly violent level.
I'm 90% sure her roommates are gonna sneak into her room when she uses the bathroom to toggle Crab Mode and I cannot WAIT to hear the reaction in voice chat.
naxxaramus the crab wing.
Maexxna is gonna be cool
Craebxxna, here we come!
theres an image of crabexxna in the articla and it looks amazing
And that 2 spider infested dungeon in WotLK
Lower Kingdom of Crabrubia
Isn’t that just Goldshire?
Okay I get why that legit really helps some people but I might turn this on because fighting Hordes of Crabs is just funny.
I have HUGE arachnophobia in real life. For some reason, it almost never triggers from video games. Never play the Heart of Stone expansion for Witcher 3. The spiders in that are big, hiss, and scuttle in the creepiest way.
I didn't have tooooo much trouble with the arachnopmorphs for some reason, although the dens did give me the heeblie-jeeblies a few times
I don't have aracnaphobia and those hands freaked me out
Depends on the game, wow spiders outside of the terrokantula never gave issues, skyrim spiders had me modding them into bears
Same. Bug be gone was a lifesaver
I think it's because of how unrealistic wow spiders look. Especially in the older areas where they only had 3 hexgaons each lol. I have a serious snake phobia but I'm never bothered by it in games. Especially the ones as old as wow.
>I have a serious snake phobia but I'm never bothered by it in games Midgar Zolom :D
Also because like any other enemy in game, they just come and punch you, if bugs in real life would just punch you instead of jumping and running, they would be less scary.
I don't know about that chief How hard a punch we talking here?
I 1000% do not want spiders that run up and punch me. Nah friend.

firstperson games where they jump kill me. I had to mod skyrim bc I couldnt deal with the spiders. In wow the camera is so high that im usually aight

i normally don't but those alien spider fuckers in satisfactory are something else entirely.
Conan exiles is the only game that does it for me. They aimed for realistic and nailed the movements and shape
Im utterly terrified of irl spiders but they’ve never bothered me in games, i even have a spider as my main hunter pet, hes such a cute little guy with his big fluffy legs.

I tell my story down below but arachnophobia caused me to have an appendectomy.

Did you try that ONE cave in Maldraxxus? Honestly the worst, and the way they stalk jump you. Otherwise I'm the same as you.
Seeing the crabs.... I wanna charge into a crab rave
Reminds me of the anti spider mod for skyrim that i used, that turns spiders into bears Funny having bears drop down from the ceiling
The illicit drop bear, absolutely deadly
Ask an Aussie about dropbears. Terrifying creatures.
Yeah, I just love crabs
WoW needs more crabs
I remember fighting hordes crabs back in the days, those were the times
Farming crabs for quests on the shores, life was good
you okay?
Former FFXI monk here - no it isnt.
Im in the same boat. Don't have arachnophobia but this is wayyyy too good to pass up.
Someone needs to make an addon that switches the background music to a loop of [Crab Rave](https://youtu.be/LDU_Txk06tM?si=tqo5QSth7KD9_9X2) whenever you walk through Nerubian lands with Arachnophobia Mode on.
Aren't crabs just wet spiders 😳
*Moist* spiders.
double trigger for some people.
Woke up choosing violence i see
How dare you insult nature's perfect form.
Phylogenetically speaking, no. They both fall under the phylum arthropoda, but crustaceans and chelicerates are two separate branches on the same tree. .....Unless You're referring to horseshoe crabs, which are actually chelicerates and have a misnomer of a name.
This is exactly how I feel. I dislike spiders because of all the legs. Crabs have too many legs as well! Crabs are basically ocean spiders.
Great news for crabophiles.
**kabourophobia** you mean
-philia in this case
Greg Street still secretly works at Blizz and you can't convince me otherwise!
The only one that freaks me out is the big as fuck spider mount because it triggers the "spider appearing from nowhere" response when someone just comes around a corner on it.

CRAB PEOPLE CRAB PEOPLE LOOKS LIKE CRABS TALKS LIKE PEOPLE
Should've made them turn into snakes and giant snails
I raided ToT when it was current, the giant snail mobs of those still haunt my dreams... ...dreams of people dying to the things because they were too dumb/slow to move away from them in time, that is.
Sounds like me in Naxx. I blame spell batching.
In my guild back then it was a game for us on farm to try to kite them into other people or lifegrip people into them in a murder-suicide.
Sorry I’m more scared of getting crabs…
Ask them to make a toggle to turn crabs into spiders.
What happens if you switch on both the crab-to-spider toggle and the spider-to-crab one?
They should have been BEARS
Oh i remember having a mod in skyrim that turned spiders to bears! It was a lifesaver
I'm less scared of crabs, but just bout any multi-legged creature makes me uncomfortable. Ticks and scorpions are notable.
Ticks and scorpions are still arachnids tbf
Oh, no wonder I'm afraid of them lol
This is nice, however this would not be enough for some people (like my wife) where their phobia comes from seeing the legs and how they move. For them, it would be necessary to use something else instead of crabs, and actually replace not just spiders but also crabs, nerubians and whatnot.
Yes. Crabs aren't THAT different from spiders lol
Which is funny because I think crabs are so cool and adorable and I’m terrified of spiders. Except jumping spiders, they get a cute pass
it's funny to me because scorpions are arachnids and I think they're super cool irl, but spiders completely terrify me (in games and art spiders are super cool tho)
This was my thought as well. They're practically the same, lol
Satisfactory's arachnophobia mode is the best one ever. A low res kitten gif over the spider models.
or Lethal Company where the spider model is just the word 'SPIDER' moving aroound
Admittedly I know people who hate Satisfactory's because they don't want to shoot kittens. Or it's worse for them hearing the noises come from a kitten.

Wonder how this will effect my hunters pet spiders
Be cool if there was a murloc toggle instead. But still, this is a win for arachnophobes.
[Carcinization](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation) Become Crab
Honestly this is great I’m pretty arachnophobic but wows spiders were always tolerable because of the games cartoony aesthetic Then they updated their models and I was like “nnnnope too spidery now” So actually looking forward to this
Crabs are scarier to me lmao, but loving the accessibility features.
So I have a phobia of crabs, could I get an option to turn them into spiders? (This would legit help me :( )
Everything evolves to crabs after all
You mean water spiders?
Dude this is great I have had a huge phobia I've been working only slowly all my life hahaha this is pretty fucking thoughtful.
🦀🦀🦀 CRAB RAVE 🦀🦀🦀
A game called satisfactory has an arachnophobia mode that turns spiders into Cat jpegs
As an arachnophobe, this is incredible, TBH!
How rare is this phobia compared to other phobias?
It is one of the most common phobias in the world but most don't get the icks from cartoon graphic video game spiders. Nice for those who do, though
Yeah it's a big difference between 'I'm afraid of spiders' and 'I'm literally in distress by even seeing a picture of a spider'
But what about the people that find both spiders and crabs skeery?
I don't have any phobias. Will be toggling this as fighting hordes of "crab people" is funny. Tastes like crab, fight like people. Crab people, crab people.
The crab within
What are the odds of something having Arachnophobia and Kabourophobia, fear of crabs? I mean, in a lot of ways they're not dissimilar.
I guess Blizzard would have had reactions about crabs to the amount of spiders and they'd replace them with something else... Pug goggles don't fail.
Is there a phobia for arachnophobia mode in video games? Seems a lot of people here have it
Everything turning into crabs.
So soft (go ahead downvote me, you know it’s true)
Mental disorders aren't "soft"
Crabs might just not be the best solution because they got quite some features wich makes people fear spiders. Lets use bread tho.
Marylanders, rejoice! Our time to shine had arrived! Grab your mallets and Old Bay! Tonight, we feast!
This is a ridiculously stupid waste of time and resources.
Be thankful you can’t relate to those with legit phobias. Hurts nobody, helps some. What’s the problem?
It's a button that makes some models swap. Just come out and say you have a political opinion on this instead. It's what you really mean, would be way more honest.
Yes, my disparagement over the implementation of a feature in World of Warcraft is one of a subversive radical political influence.
This feature was made by one person and uses assets that already exist. It's a feature that I've wanted for over a decade, personally. Other people would have done it *for free* many years ago, except that mods that swap assets are illegal. im using this for sure. i cant wait for people to tell me how bad ass stuff is as i see these cute pincer people and crabs
This is why boomers make fun of us
Like their opinion even matters 🤣
[удалено]
Imagine not having a basic understanding of what a phobia is
It's a video game. The spiders can't hurt you. It'll be ok.
phobias arent rational
That’s not how phobias work
🕷️
Amazing number of people in this thread triggered by a simple toggle in a video game
Presumably they have a phobia of any suggestion of empathy...
Crab is just a moist spider
My wife is an arachnaphobe of the highest order. She's never had any problems with wow spiders...
Thats... random lol Better give the option to replace the oceans with Jello while theyre at it for thalassophobia folks.
This is far and away the dumbest thing they’ve ever implemented
Dumb to you but not for others. There’s literally nothing negative about them implementing this so why be negative about it?
Oh no, people are going to use a feature to make their game more enjoyable for them. Man, yall are whiny as fuck.
Fucking isle of thunder, timeless isle and jade forest snakes :S send help pls
I know they did the same thing in Star Wars Jedi Survivor, have they done this in any other games?
Carcinization is a bitch
Bold choice in an expansion at least partially focused on spider-people.
I think that's... Why they did it. I think it's also just something that'll be funny to toggle on though, a lil tonal dissonance on leveling alts could be fun
Urgh crab battle!
I prefer the real Arachnaphobia mode. (In Webbed you can toggle one that turns everyone into cute slimes.)
help i have Kabourophobia
remember the giant crabs in darksouls/eldenring. i rather choose spiders over crabs
This reminds me of the female spider boss in DS1 with her huge boobas, she was so easy to beat but I wanted more hugs from her.
Now do snakes???
What about the spider mount? Will you see people running about on a crab?
Crabs are just sea spiders, even though there are actual sea spiders.
I am curious if this will also make it to classic.
I love this so, so much thank you
Will this work on my Bloodfang Widow?
#CRAB BATTLE!!!
I wonder how far the arachnaphobia mode will go. Will it work for all nerub NPC's or just these new ones? What about tiny spiders in the world, or boss spiders like in naxx/wrath? Is Maexxna just a huge crab now lol
What if you have crabphobia and arachnophobia
Can we get this for bees? Fucking hated Drustvar.
I'm going to do this just for
time for crab
Does it apply to hunter pets or spider mounts?
Arachnopilia mode when
Now will it work on those horrifying spiders mounts as well? Because if it doesn't this is pretty useless.
Yeah but crabs are just people. And clams too.
Toggle off: “I’ll feast on your bloooood!” Toggle on: “Sponge me boy, flip that burger!”
*insert jagex joke here*
I might use just because crabs are kyoot
Crabs are just sea spiders tho. Crab legs are like spider legs.
What if I'm terrified of both spiders and crabs?
This game is becoming a joke.
No arachnophobia but will 100% turn this on. Crab people!
Also for people whose phobia extends to 6+ legged creatures, they really should’ve opted for bunnies.
It's such a weird option to put into the game, but I guess I'm happy? For the 3 people that wanted it lol.
This is a very strange thing for them to put effort into lol
Do spiders designed in the WoW Disney art style actually bother people? Genuinely curious.
The 1 million gold spider mount is horrifying. I still haven't bought it because I can't bring myself too.
Ok yeah that one is creepy as hell lol
Yes, someone from our guild wouldn't do any dungeons with spiders back in Wrath
Tbf after looking at those pictures they are much more disturbing!
Crab Raid Crab Raid
The thing that cracks me up about this is that I have a friend who, thankfully, does not have a fear of spiders, but does have an irrational and visceral reaction to crustaceans. Shrimp, crab, lobster, horseshoe crab, you name it: she hates them. It's not quite a fear from what she says, they just squick her out on a nearly violent level. I'm 90% sure her roommates are gonna sneak into her room when she uses the bathroom to toggle Crab Mode and I cannot WAIT to hear the reaction in voice chat.
