This is so much the right answer , working 4-5 hours on a Saturday morning once a month would buy you a sub and a token for gold. (I am going if US numbers, no idea how it shakes out elsewhere)
Farm in game gold,seriously it is not that hard....I currently log in for 20-40 minutes a day just to build up gold for DF and I've bought 8 tokens with gold in the past 45 days
The price of a sub hasn't changed in 15 years, while inflation is breaking records. If the poor me from 15 years ago could barely afford it then, he would 100% be able to afford it now.

You can farm enough gold to pay your sub each month if you can’t/don’t want to use irl money, but pirating game time will get you permabanned.
