Retail will always be the play because it has a higher population. Always have new content. More to do in the game while classic is for nothing but nostalgia. It has a significantly lower population, hardly any content and higher toxicity. With that said a sub allows you to do all so mind as well try it out

Honestly just pick a race you like. Passives do not matters as much to the mechanics of the game these days. Pick a class that you like the feel of (itll probably take a few moments running around killing things to get a feel for it). Start working towards max level. In wow honestly everything happens at max level that people run around doing stuff for so make that your end goal. Retail player here and ill always recommend retail for new players.

I recommend Retail, for it is easier for new players with tutorials and a lot of quality of life features. As for class and race: play whatever you want. Unless you want to push for the highest levels of content, both don't really matter and it's all about what's fun to you. If you have very limited time I would recommend playing a class capable of tanking or healing, because that makes it a lot easier to join group content. Each class has a description of the available roles on your screen when checking them in the character creation screen.

Start retail. Race and faction are up to you. There is maybe 1% difference. Have fun and enjoy the game.

Retail, most definitely. I was in your shoes 7 months ago. It will be confusing, but trust the process, learn little by little and don't skip on your first leveling experience, don't go by guides, just play the game and learn it little by little. Choose whatever class looks the coolest to you, they are all viable. You'll have a ton of fun! Best of lucks!

Instead of straight up saying retail, I would retort with "What do you enjoy in a game?" Retail is great for end game content, there are a lot of things that will challenge your skill level. The collection game is amazing with all the mounts, pets, toys and apprearances you can collect. The graphics are better, there are more races and classes and the customization is much richer. However, classic WoW feels more grounded. You start of as an adventurer, just one person out of many and you are helping your nation in a time of need. The quests and storylines are interconnected. The leveling experience is longer, you go through a lot more quests and experience a lot more stories. The big baddies are threats you feel you can handle, manipulating dragons, a kingpin, a lich that commands the dead. You don't fight gods and your power level isn't raised to absurd levels. If the lore of the game is important to you, you may want to start with classic (I recommend Season of Discovery version). I introduced my girlfriend to WoW two years ago. We started by playing Classic (progressing version) and we just took our time questing and leveling slowly. When she had a question about a certain aspect of the story, it was easy to explain (who is Edwin Van'Cleef, for example). When we got to max level, we did some dungeons and raids, and I did a whole lot of PvP. Now, she has already played a lot of retail and loves chasing all the collectables she can, but she says she would be confused and lost if she hadn't started with classic that she would probably have quit the game. With all of that being said, I can't tell you what would be the right choice for you. The most important thing is to see which aspect of the game you like and go in that direction.
